When One Shall Become Two
Or, the Plot Thickens … duh duh duhhhhh
Natalie gracefully lifted her arm to allow the swooping owl to land. She stood perfectly balanced on top of the parapets of the Astronomy Tower, as was now her norm, awaiting the first weak rays of the sun. The owl affectionately groomed at her loosely tied hair before extending its leg with the parchment scroll attached. Sliding her eyes to the darkened door way, knowing full well who hid in the shadows watching her, she unfurled the scroll as the owl hopped to her shoulder, waiting for a reply.
Natalie smiled as she read the message, quickly conjured an already inked scroll, and scrawled her answer across the bottom of the page. Re-tying the scroll to the owl’s offered leg, she watched as the wise old bird swooped off into the first weak rays of light.
Natalie, barefoot, clad in long loose gray cotton sweats and a white long sleeved tee, balanced in the center of one upraised square of stone, closed her eyes and lifted her face and hands to the heavens. ‘Time to begin another day.’ She regulated her breathing, feeling each set of muscles open each rib to receive the life giving oxygen focusing solely on herself, ignoring the voyeur spying from the shadows. She spread her arms wide to her sides, face still upturned. Then she dropped her hands, palms flat against the castle stones in front of her toes. Springing with utmost control, she balanced on her hands, thrusting her feet backwards to land on her toes on the next upraised square of the parapet, holding steady, balanced, in an upraised push up. Inhaling deeply, she pushed back, lowering her head between her arms, into what Moody would have recognized as the down dullah, if he had known anything about yoga. Of course, he didn’t, and her sudden movement caused him nearly to choke on his own air.
With another deep breath, and Natalie stretched her left leg forward between her hands, bending her knee, straightening her right leg, and raised her arms into warrior position. She held this pose interminably, at least according to the auror who watched her, stunned at her physical control and balance. She shifted once more, back to her original position, allowing a glorious smile to cross her face as the sun edged fully past the horizon. Turning to face the sun, she spread her arms out to her sides. Without a backward glance, Natalie dove off the parapet, springing from her toes into a tight tucked somersault before extending her full length, hands clasped overhead. She seemed suspended for an instant, before she began to plummet towards the ground. Moody nearly swallowed his tongue in shock, running as fast as his impediment would allow him to the edge of the tower, where he watched her free falling, head first. Mere feet from the ground, Natalie’s body instantly transformed into the glorious form of a golden eagle, wings outspread to catch the wind, which soared back into the air in triumph. A loud indignant call jerked Moody back to reality, and back into breathing.
“That bloody bitch.” He muttered watching her fly away over the trees.

Late in the afternoon, Severus accompanied Natalie companionably to the arranged meeting in the staff room. They instantly ceased their friendly chatter when they both heard Moody shouting from inside the room.
“Unregistered animagus …” He was blustering, presumably at Albus.
Natalie sneered in anger. She glowered at Snape, who was confused at the sudden change in her mood, but opened the door for her nonetheless. She stormed into the room, her pale blue teaching robes billowing around her.
“I assure you, Mr. Moody, that I certainly am not an unregistered animagus.” She coldly interrupted his tirade, swooping quite bird-like to an unoccupied chair. Tonks stared at her in bewilderment as did most of the other occupants, except for Alexei.
“Oh no deary …” The battle scarred auror turned on her. “… You are registered all right …” He curled his lip in disgust. “… As a serpent.”
Nearly everyone in the room caused their own whiplash as they turned to stare at Natalie who was barely controlling her rage.
“Yes, I am.” She took a deep breath, staring into Moody’s one good eye. “And it is completely impossible for someone to have two different alters, isn’t it?” She asked sweetly, an edge of anger sharpened steel just below the softness of her voice.
Albus drew a sharp breath, a hissing sound from between his teeth, his blue eyes grown wide. “When one shall become two …” He stuttered incoherently.
“I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that you know that much, Headmaster.” Natalie’s face had grown hard, her eyes darkened.
“I told him.” Alexei tried to calm Natalie, knowing that her wrath was fearsome. He stood up, trying to make his way to her side, to calm her, hopefully.
Natalie rose to her feet to glare at Alexei. “You’ve betrayed a trust.” She scolded him coldly.
“And I regret doing so.” Alexei lowered his head, afraid to look into her hardened blue eyes.
Natalie seemed to consider something for a few moments before she turned to face the Headmaster once again. The others watched the pair in stunned silence until Natalie adressed Albus in a voice as cold as ice.
“If my means of transformation bothers Mr. Moody, perhaps you could suggest to him not to watch me from the shadows any further.”
Sputtering in outrage, Moody started to speak.
“You’ve nev…” He cut himself off as the enrage witch wheeled on him.
“I’ve never transformed before?” She finished for him. “Or you’ve never seen me transform before, you nasty old spy. I know you watch me every morning. What I don’t know is why.” She hissed at him. Moody harrumphed, and stomped out of the staff room, beating a wise retreat from the wrath of the witch. Natalie laughed softly at his retreating back. “Taught you to spy, didn’t I?” She returned to her seat.
“Rest assured, Headmaster, now that I have perfected my second transformation, and can choose my alter at will, I fully intend to register with your Ministry, for diplomacy’s sake any way.”
“Now, now, Miss Richmond, that is between you and the Ministry, is it not?” The wily old man’s eyes twinkled as he grinned at Natalie over the edges of his half moon glasses. “Now I believe Remus and Nymphadora requested this meeting as an amendment to our little contest.”
“Well, ah, yes, we did.” Remus stuttered a bit, confused by the whole scene they had just witnessed.
“I have no problem with the change, Headmaster.” Natalie offered. “As I am the only one whose list was ‘published’, I believe that was the concern, was it not?”
“Well, yes. It wouldn’t be fair that we all got to read your list.” Tonks added.
“It really matters not one whit to me.” Natalie reinforced.
“Well, then, shall we?” Remus offered, drawing his wand and holding it above the assembled scrolls.
“We will meet on the night after the final task. The scrolls will have a time and date stamp on the outside to indicate when they were completed. We’ll know the winners then.” Alexei dictated. The others all agreed. “So shall it be.”
Minerva eyed Natalie suspiciously. She wanted to know exactly how the young witch managed two animagus forms. Snape was fascinated with the fact that she had a serpent animagus. Alexei was afraid for her. Ana was clueless as to the significance. Albus was more curious than ever about the strange young American witch.
