Since the fifth year students were taking their exams,
Severus took the opportunity to work on potions. Poppy was running out of calming draught, and
of course Remus needed his Wolfsbane potion.
Sirius’ head suddenly peaked through the fireplace. “Psst….” he whispered.
Severus jumped, nearly spilling the jar of salamander
eyes. “Yes, can I help you?”
“Is the psycho with the stick around?” Sirius asked,
glancing around the room.
Severus couldn’t help but chuckle softly and run his finger
over the little red mark on his cheek.
“No, it’s safe. I assume you’ve
come for Remus’ potion?”
Sirius popped out of the fireplace and dusted himself
off. “Yeah, Remus said he was busy and
asked me to come for it.”
Severus motioned to a bubbling cauldron in the corner of the
room. “It isn’t ready yet, but soon.”
“Oh, all right,” Sirius nodded. “Do you mind if I wait then?”
“Not at all,” Severus said as he started stirring the potion
he was working on in a figure eight pattern.
Sirius quietly sat down at one of the desks and started
drumming his fingers on the table top.
“Would you please stop doing that?” Severus grumbled. “I need to concentrate.”
“Sorry,” Sirius mumbled and laid his head down. He’d been thinking about both James and
Severus quite a bit the past few days.
The message of the stick had not been lost on him. James had said a number of times that the
past should remain in the past. They
were adults now, and they needed to stop acting like children.
Severus finished the calming draught and started to bottle
it. “How did you and James become so
friendly?” Sirius asked.
Severus shrugged. “He
apologized and started being friendly.
You’d be surprised to discover how far a kind word can go.”
Sirius was starting to see the other man in a whole new light. He started to see Severus as human, and not
some evil git. The man had managed to
put everything aside and become friends with his former enemy. That was something to be respected.
“You know, it really was decent of you to start making that
potion for Remus two years ago, even with the way things were,” Sirius said
without looking up from the desk.
“Was that your attempt at an apology?” Severus asked with an
amused expression.
Sirius nodded. “Sort
of…” he frowned.
Severus’ lips curled into a friendly smile. “Well then, apology accepted.”
Just then the classroom door burst open and James strode in
looking very flustered. “Severus, I have
a problem!” he cried. “My robes don’t
fit anymore!”
James lifted his arms and turned around to demonstrate. His custom fit robes were indeed rather tight
around his hips and belly.
“Wow,” Sirius commented, “You’re gaining weight like a
normal person.”
“I’m pregnant you idiot!” James snapped.
Sirius’ eyes went wide.
“You’re what? Seriously? And Severus knew and I didn’t?”
“Don’t worry, he didn’t tell me,” Severus said quickly to
avoid a scene. “I figured it out. James, calm down and breathe. Go see if my robes fit you; you might have to
shorten them a little though.”
James closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It was only then that his brain registered
Sirius’ presence. “I’m sorry, Siri; I’ve
just been a bit…”
“Hormonal?” Severus finished the sentence.
James glared at the Potions Master. “Watch it,” he growled and went to dig through
Severus’ closet.
He came back a few minutes later wearing a high-necked,
conservative black robe. “All right,
yours fit, and I didn’t have to shorten it that much thank you…”
“Well then, that’s one crisis averted,” Severus smiled as he
returned his attention to the Wolfsbane potion.
James hopped up to sit on top of the desk beside
Sirius. “So you’re really pregnant?”
Sirius asked in awe. “Does Lucius
know? It is his right?”
“Yes, and not yet,” James answered. “I don’t want to drop this on him in a letter
or something. Today is the last day of
testing, so I’ll tell him soon.”
There was a knock at the door and Draco poked his head
in. “Uncle Sev, Umbridge wants you in
her office.”
Severus groaned.
“What does she want now?”
Draco frowned and glanced at James. “Harry was caught using her fire place.”
“WHAT?” James shouted and started rambling very fast in
Elfish.
Severus sighed and shook his head. “Sirius, you stay here. James, remember to breathe. We’ll go sort this out.”
The two men made their way up to Umbridge’s office. When Severus opened the door, the scene they
saw before them was indescribable. Ron,
Hermione, Ginny, Luna, and Neville were being held by Slytherin students, and
Harry was in a chair with Umbridge hovering over him, her wand pointed at his
forehead.
“What’s going on?” James demanded.
Umbridge looked up at him.
“This is a manner of Ministry security.
I will not have you
interfering this time!” she cried out.
“Severus, Potter here was trying to contact someone. I need more Veritaserum to question him.”
“I gave you the only bottle I had to question him the last
time. You haven’t used it all have
you? I told you three drops would
suffice.”
Umbridge started turning purple again and shaking. “And to think, Lucius Malfoy said all those
wonderful things about you! Since you’re
being of no help, leave me.”
James and Severus stood and stared at each other. The woman clearly wasn’t right in the head,
and James found himself in a sticky situation.
This unstable woman had her wand pointed at his son. He tried to think of a way out, but with all
the recent stress and his hormones being so crazy his mind was one big ball of
fuzz.
“All right, we’ll tell you!” Hermione blurted out, a few
fake tears welling up in her eyes.
Everyone in the room turned their attention to her. “I’m sorry guys, but we can’t keep this
up. She’ll hurt Harry.”
Umbridge motioned for Hermione to sit down at her desk. “It’s all right dear, tell me everything,”
she said trying to sound motherly, but coming from her it was just disturbing.
Hermione looked at James as if trying to silently
communicate with him. Oddly enough,
James understood what she was doing.
“We were trying to contact Dumbledore,” Hermione
started. “He put the three of us in
charge of his weapon, and we were trying to tell him it’s ready.”
A triumphant smile appeared on Umbridge’s face. “I knew it!” she cried. “And of course you were planted here to stop
the Ministry from finding out anything weren’t you?” she said to James.
James let out a deep sigh.
“What can I say… I’m caught.”
“All this nonsense is going to stop right now. Mr. Potter, you’re going to hand over your
wand and take me to this weapon,” Umbridge said as she held out her hand. “Professor Snape, you’ll stay here with the
children.”
“I don’t have my wand on me, but you’re welcome to search
me,” James said truthfully. He didn’t
really use his wand much; and he didn’t even know where it was half the
time. He almost always used wandless
magic, finding it much easier.
Umbridge searched him quickly, and upon finding no wand
hidden anywhere ushered him out the door.
James couldn’t believe the woman was really that stupid. She actually believed Albus Dumbledore had
entrusted a weapon to three students rather than adults, and now she was
following blindly James out into the Dark
Forest. She had threatened Harry, and now James’ mind
was planning what to do with her. Until
now he had only been playing with her, but threatening his child was a
dangerous line to cross.
Meanwhile, back in Umbridge’s office, Severus had sent the
Slytherin students back to their classes.
They were hesitant, but he threatened them with detention if they didn’t
obey. As soon as the door closed behind
Crabbe, Harry confessed what he was really doing. “I saw Sirius being tortured in the
Department of Mysteries!” he blurted out.
“I was fire-calling Grimmauld Place
to check and see if Sirius was there, but he wasn’t. Kreacher said-”
Severus interrupted him.
“And you trust what that house elf says now?” He probably should have told Harry that
Sirius was safe and sound in the dungeon, but his mind was too busy trying to
figure out what was going on.
“Stay here until I return,” Severus ordered and went over to
the fireplace. He grabbed a handful of
Floo powder and threw it into the flames.
“Malfoy Manor,” he called out and stepped in. If anyone could tell him anything it would be
Lucius.
When he stepped out into the parlor of Malfoy Manor he was
met by a house elf. “Tell your Master I
need to see him. It’s an emergency,” he
ordered.
“Master isn’t here,” the house elf squeaked.
Severus swore under his breath. “What about your Mistress?”
“Mistress is here!
Twinkle will bring her right away sir!”
Severus paced the room while he waited. “Is something wrong Severus?” he heard
Narcissa’s voice say moments later.
“Do you know where Lucius went?” Severus asked.
Narcissa frowned.
“The Dark Lord ordered him to go to the Department of Mysteries at the
Ministry. He wanted to contact someone,
but he thought it might be too dangerous.
Is something wrong?”
“Only a fool brat who doesn’t use his head,” Severus
grumbled. “Thank you, Narcissa. I need to get back to the school.”
Severus stepped through the Floo again to return to
Umbridge’s Office and found that Harry and his friends were no longer
there. The Potions Master grumbled under
his breath and went in search of them, hoping that Harry hadn’t rushed off into
a trap in the name of saving the day; though something told him that was
exactly what had happened.
