Eventually, the holiday ended and everyone returned to the castle. Edge had reached out for him to stay with him in the castle but he declined. There was still much he needed to do and time was running short.
He returned to the house to find progress had halted due to snow. That was fine. He simply left the thought of continuing as soon as possible in their minds. There wasn’t much left to do at this point anyway.
He stayed in the house for some time to provide some distance. It was only once work continued on the house that he returned to the castle. Even then he stayed and watched from a distance. He made note of every time the Potions Master left the castle boundaries for meetings and that Edge would always follow close behind. Usually they would return with no harm but occasionally they would return with Edge supporting the Potential as they made their way back to the castle. He felt his chest constrict every time this occurred. It was only a matter of time before Edge would be carrying a body instead of supporting one. He could feel it on the air.
He kept watch, only interacting on occasion. He would watch and follow the group allowing himself to be seen but he stayed at a distance. Edge frequently tried to track him down but he never allowed himself to be caught. It hurt Edge, he could see it clearly on his face and in the glares the others would send his way when they caught his scent, but it was necessary.
Dante left the castle for a short time to check on the house to find it finished and move in ready. Some of the tension released from his body. Edge would have a place for his clan. He was steadily working on getting furniture and such for it when he felt it. It was a pull Dante had never experienced but knew instantly what it was. He dropped what he was doing and rushed out. He followed the pull transforming when he started hearing snarls and growls.
With a snarl of his own, Dante charged into the nearest werewolf he could. The other three immediately turned to help their companion. He was swiped to the side and hit the ground hard. Standing on his paws, he growled deeply as the four large werewolves circled him. He spotted the dark haired Potential lying a short distance away. Blood covered him head to toe. There wasn’t a clean spot visible. The man’s breaths were wet and blood flowed from his mouth steadily. One of the werewolves had crushed his throat. Severus was not long for this world.
Dante felt the moment life ceased in the bleeding form. The pull grew stronger and a mental countdown began. He had so long to get Severus to safety before the transition would start. He could not waste time playing with these abominations.
He shifted from his wolf form. One charged at him. He flitted at the last moment, grabbing the wolf by its neck and tossing it into the other three as they charged at him. They were scrambling to their feet as he released control on his power. It lashed into them. They cried out, grasping at their elongated heads with misshapen paws as they fell to the ground. He held them there, crying and writhing in pain until he was sure they would no longer bother him. He thought briefly of killing them but knew they had no control on their fate. Their alpha would most likely kill them for their failure. He had more important things to get to.
He waited just long enough for the werewolves to get out of sight before turning to Severus. Kneeling beside the man he noticed the numerous wounds already healing over at a rapid pace. He would need to move quickly. Gathering Severus into a fireman carry, he flitted off making sure to leave no sign behind him. It would not do to have anyone, or anything, follow him. He and Severus both would be vulnerable for the next month or so.
Severus had just been laid on a bed at the house, after being thoroughly cleaned, when the convulsions started.
It was as though the man was having an everlasting seizure. He frequently had to hold him down to prevent any harm coming to either of them. The thrashing turned to full body convulsions then stopped as quickly as they started. He sat by Severus whose dark hair was plastered to his forehead and chest heaved with deep, rapid breaths. He was shaking from the exertion and so very, very tired. He had no help this time. The sun had risen hours ago yet he could not sleep. Severus began to shiver violently his face crunching up as though in pain.
He sighed, ran a hand over his tired and ashen face, and went to fetch blankets, towels, and water before quickly returning. He was able to get the shivers stopped for a short time before the convulsing started again. This lasted a week before the screaming started.
It was the screaming that hurt him the most bringing back memories. They were so pain filled even as the man started to claw at his skin. Edge had described the feeling to him long ago as though his very skin was being burnt off from the inside out. The only thing he could offer was cool water when the heat hit and blankets when the cold hit.
He stayed by Severus’ side day and night. He had not fed since the transition started and only slept during the short periods that Severus got a reprieve from the torture. He was growing weaker from hunger but did not feel comfortable leaving the other mans side for even a minute. He had caused this, even if the man drank his blood of his own accord, and he was going to see him through it.
Five weeks passed before Severus finally stabilized. He waited to be sure the worst was over before leaving to find food. He would have to be careful not to kill anyone. It took feeding from six humans to feel close to normal again. Severus was sitting up when he returned. The man looked pale and weak as he stared down at his hands.
“How are you feeling?”
Severus did not react in anyway other than to blink once. “Surprisingly well but hungry I think.”
Dante nodded. “You will need food soon. I can take you or bring food here. Which would you prefer?” He sensed the other man would not want sympathy from him. He remained factual.
The dark eyes closed as he released a resigned sigh. “I will go. Feel the need to stretch my legs.”
Together they traveled to another small town a few miles away. The poor villagers close to the house had fed him plenty for one night. They were silent, only speaking to give instructions and to ask questions.
He allowed Severus a few days to completely recover from his transition. The man hardly spoke more than a couple words but he took instruction well and was soon feeding on his own. He then started sparring and running exercises to increase Severus’ speed, strength, and agility. Severus was a very quick study and he found himself impressed by the others growth. He was surprised that it took two weeks before Severus started to get anxious and fidgety. He had expected it much sooner.
“You wish to return.”
Severus grunted. “That obvious?” Severus flitted away and appeared behind him.
He was able to move before the hands grabbed him, but only just. “It is no surprise that you would wish to return. I do not blame you for your desire.”
They sparred a few more minutes, dodging and deflecting each-others actions and attacks before he called it quits. Severus could have gone longer he was sure, but the night was growing young and they needed to return to the house. It did not help he felt winded though he hid it well. Severus hesitated, looking longingly in the direction of the castle. He absent-mindedly rubbed at the bangle on his wrist.
Dante sighed. “I have one request.”
“What?” Severus did not look at him.
“Remain here and learn for a while longer.” Severus turned to him with a small glare. “You had a remarkable mind as a human, it will be advanced now. I can teach you to use the powers you have undoubtedly gained. Learn your animal form. As far as anyone knows, especially the snake, you are dead.”
“Exactly.” Severus snarled taking a few steps toward him. “Harry will be falling apart mourning me when he does not need to.”
Dante raised his hands in a motion meant to placate the upset man before him. “I understand, Severus, I do, but think about this like chess. You can give the Childe an advantage by waiting. If you know how to use your powers, and have your animal to hide as, you could be the ultimate secret weapon. The snake, believing you to be dead, would never see it coming.”
Severus growled. “One, his name is Harry. Two, I am not willing to play with his feelings like this. He is not a game!”
“I never said he was.” Dante watched Severus as he began to pace agitatedly. “Severus, I will return you to him, I swear, but I cannot stay when I do. Whatever I have to teach you, I must do it now.”
“Cannot or will not.” Severus stopped his pacing to angrily stare at him. “I care not for your issues with Edge…”
“I am dying, Severus.” Severus froze with a confused expression. Dante sighed moving to sit on a fallen log. “My magic is fading and has been for some time.”
“Vampires don’t die.” Severus stated. Everyone knew that. What was Dante playing at?
Dante chuckled sadly. “Everything dies, even vampires, but when you outlive multiple generations, it can appear as though we are immortal. Truth is, our souls get tired, and our magic starts to fade after some time.” Dante looked over to Severus to find him thinking deeply.
Severus shook his head. “That doesn’t…” He looked sharply to Dante as his last words registered. “How come?”
“Multiple reasons.” Dante shrugged as he stood. “I will tell you as we walk.” He motioned for Severus to follow knowing his curiosity would win out. It did. “Everything we do will draw on our magic and energy. Bonds even more so while incomplete bonds pull the worst. Some bonds, such as the Pair bond and the Guardian bond are a one bite deal. The powers are shared across the bond and are evened out. Claims and Mate bonds are slightly different.”
“Okay, I’m following.”
“Claims, depending on the species being claimed, can take a good deal of energy that is not always replaced. Mate bonds, once complete will even out and be shared evenly, once both parties lay their claim. If left incomplete, pulls energy from the one to place the first bite, in a bid to have the bond completed. Bonds that are broken can damage our magic and if left unhealed can cause all kinds of magical drains. It is paramount that you are careful who you form such bonds with.” He paused a brief moment. “Course not feeding properly can cause strain as well.”
They had reached the house. Dante stopped and looked at the house with a sad yet calm expression on his face. Severus stopped beside him and stayed silent waiting for Dante to continue.
“I’ve made many mistakes in my lifetime. All of them have added up.”
“An incomplete bond?”
Dante nodded. “I started it. We started getting hunted again before it could be finished. There was barely time to rest let alone anything else.” Dante’s brown eyes became haunted. “Then hell happened, literally. My Guardian bond was snapped, I lost my mind and went savage, not just on the vampires responsible, but on a neighboring village as well. I could not face what I had done, could not face Edge, and I ran. I ran and could never bring myself to return.”
Severus narrowed his eyes. “But you did.”
Dante nodded continuing to the house. The sun would be rising soon. “I felt my magic begin to dim and could barely feel our bond though it is still there. I knew then my time was short and I wanted, no, needed to see Edge one more time, if nothing else than to make sure he was okay. He was never supposed to know I had been anywhere around.”
Severus snorted and rolled his eyes as he settled on the couch as Dante worked to start a fire. “Well that went amazingly to plan.” The sarcasm dripped off his words.
Dante gave a self-depreciating snort. “That it did.” Fire crackling merrily, he turned to settle in one of the chairs opposite Severus. A small center table sat between them. “My curiosity got the better of me and I got in too deep before I realized it. By that time I had invested myself into making sure that Edge would have his clan and have a safe space for it when the time came. It was the least I could do.”
“The least you could have done was telling Edge the truth.” Severus snapped. “Instead you install false hope then avoid him at all costs.”
“Edge has his own worries. I could not add his dying Sire to that list.”
“He deserves to know!”
Dante glared finding himself getting frustrated. “Like you told the Childe what you were planning?” Severus growled low and deep. If glares could finish him off, Dante would have dropped. “It is no different.”
“It is entirely different!” Severus stood to his feet. “There was no guarantee it would have even worked. All I had was your blasted note saying it would and I wasn’t going to place all my bets on that. I could not give him false hope. Even worse I couldn’t have him falling into a panic attack at the very thought. He would have gone ballistic if I had told him.” Severus stabbed a finger in Dante’s direction. “You are actually dying. I am assuming nothing can be done or you would have done it already. Edge deserves to know!”
Dante remained silent for a few moments watching Severus as he breathed deeply to calm down. “You’re right. There is nothing that can be done once it starts. You are also right that Edge needs to know, and yet, I remain ever the coward.” Brown eyes watched Severus intently as the man settled back down on the couch still angry and glaring. “The truth remains that even as we speak my magic and energy are steadily failing. The only magic left to me untouched is my mind magic which I strongly desire to pass to you.”
“Mind magic?” Severus’ expression was intrigued.
Dante nodded. “Your mind and your control over it were quite impressive as a human. You are an astounding Legimens and Occlumens. Ability like yours is rare and will only be enhanced since your transition.” Dante leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees. “I want to help you hone that ability while I still can. Train you to use your mind in ways you could have only dreamed of before. Sadly, training you will be the last thing I will be able to do.”
Severus looked at him with narrowed eyes. “Fine, on one condition, you tell Edge the truth and stop running.”
Dante sighed and agreed. Edge would find out eventually anyway when the claim faded. Maybe it would be better to tell him first.
They focused on strengthening Severus’ mind abilities after that. The man truly was a natural at it. He barely had to put in any effort. Dante had him use the villagers nearby. They did nothing big or controlling, just to practice reaching out to touch another’s mind without eye contact. He had Severus place mild suggestions, such as going to one shop over another, or taking a different route than normal. It was all simple things that would truly harm no one. It was almost scary how well Severus excelled.
In between their sessions, Severus frequently sat outside, staring into the direction of the castle, or with eyes closed obviously deep in thought, as his fingers ghosted over the silver bangle he never removed. Dante never spoke to Severus during these moments but watched over him silently from inside the house. Dante wondered if he was trying to reach out to the Childe mentally. He wondered if he ever succeeded.
Dante also began to notice a change with the half bond he shared with Edge. It would flare occasionally and pull on him as though in warning. He knew it meant Edge was growing fond and close with someone else. He ignored it knowing there was no use in acting on it. Then he felt Edge’s frustration and confusion. Dante was not completely sure that Edge knew he was sending his feelings to him but he answered him anyway. He answered him in the only way he knew to get Edge past the marks pull. If it was faded before he died it would only hurt Edge less when it broke completely. He was growing weaker and more tired by the day. Training Severus was really taking it out of him. This really would be the last thing he would be able to do.
A month and a half passed before Severus finished learning what Dante could teach him and managed his animal form. It happened quicker than Dante had truly expected but he should probably not be surprised by anything at this point. The rarity of the animal form did take him by surprise and he could not help but stare in awe at it.
The next day they started their return to Hogwarts. Severus clearly would have flitted the entire way but stayed back with Dante who could only manage a few miles at best. Dante tried to get Severus to go ahead but the dark haired Childe was stubborn and clearly did not trust that he would keep his word. Severus was probably right to do so.
They were severely unprepared for what awaited them.
