Draco pulled Hermione into a nearby alcove behind a faded tapestry.
“Miss me?” Hermione asked with a grin.
Draco growled and gave her a hard kiss. “Your cousin is driving me barmy.”
Hermione gave him a look of sympathy. “Julie means well. She’s just happy that I’m alive.”
Draco grunted and nodded. “I understand that but this whole game of twenty questions every time she happens to corner me has got to stop.”
Hermione chuckled. “She just wants to make sure you’re worthy.”
Draco quirked an eyebrow. “Am I?”
She smirked and ran her hands down his cotton clad chest, stopping just above the waistband of his trousers. “I think so.”
Draco hissed and grabbed her wrists, pinning them over her head. “Don’t start something you don’t want to finish right now, pet.”
Hermione smirked. “Who says I don’t want to finish it?”
“I do.” They both spun to see Severus standing over them, his arms crossed over his chest with a frown on his face. “The war might be over. Hermione’s parents might be back. Julie might be terrorizing Draco at every turn, but you both still have school to attend. I will not stand for ignorant children!”
Draco rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Come on. We’ll be taking NEWTS in a few days anyway.”
Severus was not moved. “And you will both study until then.”
They dropped their eyes to the floor, knowing it was pointless to argue. “Yes father.”
Severus smirked and waved them on to their next class.
“This is useless,” Draco groaned. “I don’t need to review.”
Hermione shrugged. “I love reviewing but even I think it is pointless. I don’t forget things anymore.”
“So learn something new,” Severus said from behind them.
Hermione’s eyes lit up and Draco groaned. “Now you’ve done it.”
Severus scoffed. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to learn.”
“There is if you’re Hermione,” Draco grumbled, grunting when his mate smacked him in the stomach. “I just mean that you forget about me when you’re off on a learning tangent.”
Hermione shook her head in amusement and grabbed his hand. “I never forget about you.”
“Fine,” Draco huffed. “You ignore me.”
Hermione giggled and entered their History of Magic class, noticing that everyone else looked just as put out about attending as Draco did. Hogwarts hadn’t changed since the end of the war but its inhabitants had. Even now, five months after the war, she still flinched when she saw empty seats that were once occupied. She liked the new Astronomy professor well enough, but she missed Sinistra. She even felt the loss of Trelawney, though she wasn’t fond of the old teacher.
Somehow through it all, no one had managed to learn that she, Draco, Severus, and Melody were vampires. No one had paid that much attention to their movements during the fight. It made some things much easier and some things worse. McGonagall had taken over for Dumbledore as Headmistress and she refused to let the vampires off the grounds to hunt until they had admitted their true nature. The old woman had nearly had heart failure but Dumbledore’s portrait talked her down. She still went a little pale when their tea cups of blood appeared in front of them at meals.
“Bout time you two showed up,” Harry called as they took their seats.
Hermione winked at him and took her seat. Harry was still Harry but he was so much happier now. She hoped he stayed that way, though now he had to dodge reporters at every turn. Ginny helped him there. Hermione was pretty sure there wasn’t a reporter left in the wizarding world that hadn’t been a victim of Ginny’s bat bogey hex. Ron helped as well, stepping in the way of any photographers before they could get candid shots of his friend. They called him an attention hog, but his concern was keeping Harry out of the limelight and Harry appreciated it greatly.
“Got lost,” Draco said with a smirk.
Several people in class cracked up. It took them a few months to get used to Draco and Hermione being together. Most couldn’t believe it but they’d been caught in plenty of compromising positions to prove it. Now they were the victims of good natured teasing, which was fine with them. They were the most talked about couple at Hogwarts, even more so than Harry and Ginny or even Severus and Melody who had married the day after the war ended. But they didn’t mind. It seemed to pave the way for other unlikely couples. It was a step in the right direction.
Hermione charmed her quill to take notes as Professor Binns started droning on about the Goblin Wars… again. Her mind wandered to the aftermath of the war. The Death Eaters that didn’t die were now locked up in Azkaban. Narcissa had been pardoned but was under house arrest. She hadn’t taken kindly to Draco’s status of vampire and even less to his choice of Hermione as a mate. Things were strained but Draco took it in stride. He had another family, even if his mother wasn’t in his life.
Hermione’s own parents had their charm reversed and while they were leery of her, they accepted her. They even accepted Draco. However, they loved their new life. Hermione gave them her blessing to liquidate everything in London and move back to Australia with Julie’s parents. They were almost done in London and were about to leave. Draco would be glad. Julie was notoriously overprotective of her Mine. Then again, Draco hadn’t met Beth yet!
Remus and Tonks were doing well. Tonks was expecting a baby in the fall and Remus was beside himself with worry. He didn’t want his child to have lycanthropy too, though that was rare. She noticed Severus and Melody talking him down more than once. Sirius did his part in calming the werewolf down too, surprisingly enough. He’d found a woman, another auror, and had started to think about settling down. He was still jumpy around Melody, but he’d found remorse and he and Melody had both discovered peace. Well, as long as he kept his mouth shut anyway.
Bill and Fleur were to be married during the summer. Bill had pulled through just as Melody said he would. His face would forever bare the marks of Greyback and he liked his meat a little rarer than usual, but Fleur took it in stride, much to everyone’s surprise. In fact, she seemed to be even more deeply in love with him. Hermione couldn’t be happier for them.
Charlie had pulled through as well, though he was definitely different. He preferred his meat as rare as Bill did. He also had sharper reflexes and more keen senses. It took a few weeks for his eyes to stop glowing and his teeth to lose their points but now that the blood had worked its way out of his body, he was getting better. He had decided to forgo dragons for a while and had even struck up a tentative friendship with a dressmaker at Madam Maulkins. She wished him well.
“Earth to Hermione!” Ron shouted, making Hermione squeak and jump backwards. “There you are.”
“Sorry,” she said, blinking in surprise. Was class over already?
“Where did you drift off to?” Ron asked.
Hermione shrugged. “Just thinking about things.”
“Things?” Ron asked incredulously.
“How everyone’s doing,” Hermione clarified.
“And here I thought you were daydreaming about our coming trip to Egypt,” Draco said.
Hermione smiled. “Alex and Nancy have to get back from their trip first.”
“Where did they go again?” Harry asked.
Draco snorted. “Somewhere as far away from Aberforth as possible. They both have their wands now. They wanted to test them out.”
“When did you last see them?” Harry asked.
Hermione frowned. “A couple of months ago? Melody got a letter from them a few weeks ago. Alex took Nancy to meet his old coven and appoint a new leader. He said it was going well.”
“Vampires,” Ron sighed and shook his head.
“Hey now,” Harry nudged him. “They’ve saved your arse a time or two.”
Ron blushed. “I just… I never thought I’d get on with a pair of them, did I?”
Hermione giggled. “Stranger things have happened.”
“Yeah,” Harry snorted. “Like Ron’s sudden interest in Hannah Abbot.”
“Hey,” Ron snapped. “She’s a great cook.”
Draco chuckled. “And she doesn’t call you by a ridiculous nickname or make you wear jewelry with sickening terms of endearment engraved on them.”
Ron shuddered. “That too.”
“I think she’s quite happy with Cormac anyway,” Hermione mused as she spotted them walking arm and arm out of the class.
“I’m glad,” Ron said. “I mean, I hope their happy. She deserves it.”
“Awww,” Hermione cooed. “Is that an emotion I hear?”
Ron snorted. “Don’t get used to it. Lavender is still my friend. I just couldn’t stand dating her anymore.”
“Looks like our Ronniekins is growing up,” Harry said, wiping a fake tear from his eye.
“Gryffindors,” Draco said, making a gagging noise.
The quartet laughed as they left the room. Yes, things were much better now. Hermione had a brief flash of her friends growing old and dying and leaving her behind but she quickly shook the thought from her mind. She had years before that came to pass. Right now, she was going to enjoy it.

18 years later
“Hurry up, we’ll miss the train!” Little Scarlet cried. Her bouncy red curls flew all over the place as she ran down the station to platform 9 ¾.
“Oh, shut it. Mum and dad are faster than that bleeding train,” Scorpius snapped. He was lugging a trolley behind him, muttering about having to carry his sister’s things as well. Every now and then, he’d blew a stray strand of light brown hair out of his eyes.
“And they can hear you two make idiots of yourselves,” Sophia scoffed. She haughtily flung her waist length black locks behind her shoulder and marched down the platform, wheeled luggage plunking along behind.
“Listen to you three,” Ethan snorted. “You sound like a bunch of ninnies.” He stopped his cart long enough to sweep his long blond hair into a pony tail and then high tailed it to catch up.
“That’s quite enough,” Severus said darkly as he came up behind them.
“Yes father,” Sophia and Ethan said quietly.
“Yes grandfather,” Scarlet and Scorpius whispered.
“Does everyone have their things?” Hermione called.
“Yes,” the four children answered.
“Tickets?” Draco asked.
“Yes.”
“Owls?” Melody asked.
“Shit,” Scorpius muttered.
“Scorpius!” Hermione snapped. “Language!”
“Sorry mum,” he said, blushing scarlet. “I just… I forgot my owl.”
“Never fear,” Alex called, holding out a cage with an elegant eagle owl inside. “I got him for you.”
Scorpius visibly sagged. “Thank you great grandfather.”
Alex grinned. “Can’t go anywhere without Bobo, now can you?”
“Definitely not,” Scorpius said as he took the cage from Alex. “Where’s great grandmum?”
“She has a surprise for you all,” Alex said.
“Surprise?” Scarlet perked up. “What surprise?”
“Load your things on the train and we’ll show you.”
The four ran through the barrier at top speed, eager to see what Nancy had for them.
“Neat trick,” Draco snorted.
“Well,” Alex said, “had to give them some reason to get the lead out.”
“So you got them?” Hermione asked hopefully.
“We did!” Nancy called. She was carrying two bundles, one pale pink and one pale blue.
“Oh!” Melody squealed and ran over, grabbing the little blue bundle. “He’s a doll.”
Nancy beamed. “They both are.”
“And their names?” Severus drawled, peaking over Melody’s shoulder at the tiny little boy.
“We were thinking Jasmine and Chase,” Nancy said softly.
“I think that’s lovely,” Melody sighed.
Hermione and Draco leaned against each other and watched their family appreciate the new members. They were so glad they decided to adopt. They hadn’t realized what they were missing until Melody insisted on adopting Ethan, a war orphan. After seeing her so enthralled, Hermione and Draco adopted Scarlet, another war orphan.
Melody found Sophia in an orphanage in New Delhi. No one wanted her because she was so pale but Melody thought she looked like Severus’s twin and adopted her immediately. Soon after, Scorpius’s biological mother collapsed outside a pyramid in Egypt. Before she died, she confessed that Scorpius’s father was an American wizard she’d met on holiday. Her family wouldn’t accept the child and they should keep him safe. They obliged and Hermione and Draco ended up with a son.
Nancy and Alex were immediately enthralled with the new children but had only recently decided to try adoption. They found a place to help unwed and teenage mothers and discovered a tiny squib who’d been abandoned by her family and forced to live on the streets. They took her in, helped her get a steady job, and found her room and board. She decided to move to America after she had her twins. She’d already agreed to give them to Alex and Nancy.
“Will Arabeth be coming to visit them?” Melody asked.
Nancy closed her eyes in pain. “No. I just received word that… her plane crashed. No survivors.”
“Oh Gods,” Hermione cried in horror.
Nancy sniffed. “We’ll worry about her burial after we see the children off but I wanted them to see their new family members.”
“They’ll love that,” Melody said, blinking back pink tears.
By the time they walked through the barrier, their children had already loaded their things up and were having animated discussions with their friends. Hermione walked over and gave Harry a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey,” Harry greeted. “Good of you to join us.”
“Wanted to share the news,” Alex said, looking over at his mate.
“WE GOT THEM?” Scarlet screeched.
Nancy nodded. “This is Jasmine and your grandmum is holding Chase.”
Scarlet squealed and demanded to hold Jasmine. Scorpius and Ethan were watching over her shoulder as she cooed and grinned at the tiny little bundle. Sophia grabbed little Chase’s fingers and inspected each one. They’d been dying to meet them ever since they learned Arabeth would be giving them up for adoption. The children always wanted more additions to the family. Perhaps it was strange, but they all knew they were adopted and they wanted other children without parents to experience what they had.
“So is Arabeth going to come home and see them from time to time?” Sophia asked.
Nancy took a sharp breath. “Oh Sophia.”
“What happened to her?” Ethan asked quietly.
“She’s dead,” Scorpius whispered. “She crashed.”
Nancy nodded, not at all startled that Scorpius knew. He’d been showing signs of being a seer since he was little and his magic first manifested. He predicted when Nancy and Alex would find Arabeth, what house he’d be in, and more.
“What about her funeral?” Scarlet asked quietly. “I want to go.”
“We’ll get everything settled and send word to Neville when we have a time,” Hermione said. “Don’t worry. You’ll get to say your goodbyes.”
The four children nodded and reluctantly gave little Jasmine back before climbing on the train. Hermione had to hold back a giggle when she heard Harry’s oldest, James, complaining about Teddy and Victoraire snogging. Hugo, Ron’s oldest was complaining he was hungry. His sister Rose was scolding him since he’d just eaten an hour earlier. Among the hustle and bustle, Hermione noticed that little Albus was clinging to Harry for dear life.
“What’s wrong Al?” Hermione asked.
Harry smiled and ruffled his son’s hair. “He’s worried he’ll end up in Slytherin.”
“What’s wrong with Slytherin?” Draco asked.
Al shank back further into Harry. “I just… I heard.”
Draco crouched down to get eye level with the little boy. “Don’t believe everything you hear Al. And for Merlin’s sake, just ignore Scorpius. Everything will be just fine.”
“Besides,” Harry said. “Uncle Draco and Severus were in Slytherin, and they turned out just fine.”
Al turned pale and whispered, “but they have fangs.”
All the adults burst out laughing. Harry finally managed to regain control and knelt down beside his son. “Just because they have fangs doesn’t mean they were in Slytherin. Remember, Aunt Hermione was a Gryffindor. Besides, if it bothers you that much, you have a choice.”
“I do?” Al said in a meek voice.
“Yes. The hat takes your choices into consideration,” Harry explained. “It did for me anyway.”
“Besides,” Draco added. “You’ve got enough family on that train that if anyone doesn’t like it, they’ll take care of it.”
“Really?” Albus asked, perking up.
Draco grinned. “Really. Remember buddy, being part of a vampire family is special. We stick together.”
“Right,” Al said and then grinned. “I’ll write you all a letter when I get there. Bye Dad!”
Harry laughed and watched his middle child run full tilt onto the train.
“Well, mate,” Ron said as he walked up. “That did the trick.”
“He just needed a little encouragement,” Hermione chided.
“My kids didn’t,” Ron defended.
“Oh please,” Hannah said softly. “We had to talk Rose down the whole way over here.”
The vampires all cracked up as Ron turned blood red. Some things really never changed and Hermione found that thought comforting. As she grabbed Draco’s hand and walked out of the train station, she thought one more time about the night she’d made the decision to turn. Maybe she’d made the right choice after all.
AN: THE END. It's been amazing doing this story. I hope everyone loved it as much as I did. I'll go back here in the next few weeks and beta it again, in case you all caught what a horrible speller I was. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. Kiss, hugs, huge chocolate bunnies and a naked Draco or Snape of your choice (or Hermione if you swing that way) to everyone. Until the next story... Love you guys!!!
