"Please, please, please tell me you still have that fucking letter opener." Adrien immediately assaulted his father as soon as he walked through the door to his study.
Severus looked up at him with a peeved expression.
"Yes. I do. Why?" he asked.
Adrien smiled wide. "Hagrid's given us a good idea."
"Oh? And what sort of idea would that be?" Severus asked, half uninterested.
"He said to try to mix an Elixir with the Seraphim's blood. If it works... Hermione gets her memories back." Adrien beamed.
Severus perked up at this. "Rubeus... Hagrid gave you this idea?" he asked, genuinely shocked, as it wasn't really Hagrid's area of expertise. He almost felt annoyed with himself that he hadn't thought about it first, but he couldn't be too hard on himself. The man had been sinking in his own misery after all. Yet, this idea sparked a whole new hope for life for the dark wizard.
Opening a drawer on his desk, he pulled out the golden letter opener, and laid it on the desk top to examine it. It was still coated with the black substance. Dried, but still there none the less.
"So what do we need to do with it?" Adrien asked, peering over at the blade, but not getting too close.
"Well... I suppose I have to brew a new Elixir, don't I? A very strong rememberance Elixir, and this...-" Severus held up the golden blade on end, and grabbed for a scalpal to gently chip the dried black blood off of the blade. "-will be the main ingredient."
"How long?" Adrien asked.
"Hard telling... I've never used a Seraphim's blood as an ingredient before... It will probably take a week or so... Give or take." Severus replied softly, tone heavy with concentration as he removed every bit of the precious life source from the blade that he could. He knew his mind had screamed at him not to give the blade back to Albus right away for a reason.
"Can I help you?" Adrien asked. "I mean... I could use the experience..."
"I don't see why not." Severus replied, still scraping at the blade.
"If it doesn't work, do you think you could use my blood? I mean... It isn't pure Seraphim, but it's... Close enough." Adrien supplied.
Severus nodded sadly.
"Hey... It'll work... Let's just have some faith, shall we?" Adrien asked, desperate to see his father happy again. "Has she come to see you lately? She's been coveting over that journal of yours for the past week or so."
"Really?" Severus asked with a raised brow.
"Yeah. If you ask me, she's fallen for you all over again. But she's still desperate to remember everything." Adrien said. "She says the feeling is still.. Confusing... She doesn't remember uh... Giving you her innocence, either."
"I suppose I'll live for another week or two." Severus said with a slight smile, inwardly hoping with every fiber of his being that this plan did work.
"Have you got it all then? Shall we get started?" Adrien asked.
Severus nodded again. "Yes, I believe so..."
----
"It's under way, Hermione... Never fear. Though it is quite extraordinary that you have been able to regain some feelings back. That has never really been the case when a group of emotions has been wiped as a whole." Adrien told his Gryffindor friend after his father had dismissed him for the night.
Hermione felt relieved. Perhaps this might be a special case.
"What if Salia didn't want me to forget my memories as a whole, but... What if she just wanted to make things more diffcult for him?" she mused
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it's been a few weeks and I've been able to regain back a semblance of some of my memories... Even though I don't entirely recall everything. Maybe she just wanted to make him hurt for a little while longer? As horrible as that sounds..." Hermione said.
"Maybe... I guess we'll see won't we? In the mean time, I really do believe you should go talk to him, Hermione. He could use your comfort in a time like this. You're really the only one who can comfort him. I've tried but it's awkward, you know?"
Hermione nodded and stood to leave the Common room.
"Just... Don't be shy, Hermione. Let him know that there is still some hope. Even without an Elixir." Adrien winked at her.
"Okay... Thanks Adrien." she smiled.
Hermione's heart was heavy as she walked toward the dark wizard's study. Maybe if they let it go for a little while longer, she would get everything back. Yet, she knew she didn't want to wait that long, and neither did Severus. She felt so nervous at this moment, as her feet willed themselves to move. She couldn't help but feel that he was still the snarky Potions Master, and he would turn her away in an instant. Even though his writing had clearly stated he had no intention of giving up on her, it was still a lingering thought. Arriving at the door, she was surprised to find it cracked open; a thin sliver of light pouring out into the hall onto the floor.
She gently pushed the door open and found the man in question bent over a cauldron staring scrutinizingly into it.
"Adrien, I thought I told you you could go." he said sadly, not turning around.
"It's... It's me..." Hermione said softly.
The wizard's heart jumped into his throat as he abruptly straigtened himself back up, and whirled around to look at her. His expression softened, seeing his heart's desire standing in his midst.
"Hello.." he greeted, surprised. "I was beginning to think I'd scared you off with my journal entries."
Hermione smiled sadly and shook her head. She couldn't help but feel surprised at herself that she had the strongest urge to reach out and touch him, but in light of everything, she knew it wasn't that odd. Not odd at all in fact.
Taking a bold move, despite her inner alarm at her own feelings, she stepped forward. To his surprise, the girl placed her arms around his midsection, and pulled him into a tight embrace.
"I'm so sorry, Severus..." she whispered. "I want to remember everything, but... I can't."
Severus let his eyes flutter to a close as her scent enveloped his senses while he held tight to her; his heart giving way to the same familiar feeling that he always got when she was around.
"What do you feel right now?" he whispered, nuzzling his face into her hair.
"I feel like I've woken from a coma, and all I can remember is things that people have only told me. It's confusing really. Very confusing." she drew away from him to look into his dark eyes, filled with pain and distress. "But I know that I love you. That's all that should matter, but I can't remember why. I hope you understand... It's like... I woke up, and someone told me I was in love with you. One day to the next. It's.. hard to explain."
"You love me?" he asked.
Hermione smiled sadly. "I think anyone would fall right in love with you if they ever read what I've read." she told him, pulling the charmed-to-fit journal from her jeans pocket.
"This feeling of being lost, is comparable to wandering through the dark. Someone reaches out, and grasps my hand, and when I turn to greet whoever so bold to want to hold it, no one is there." She quoted a verse from his journal.
Severus took a deep breath, basking in her soapy scent. "I'm here." he told her.
