When he comes back downstairs, he touches her face again and then says, “There is something else you need to think about, that both of us will need to decide fairly soon. If we are going to share a bed while the children are at home, they’ll have to know to expect both of us in the same room at night (else be panicked if they come to one of our rooms in the middle of the night and we’re not there). If we decide not to share a bed for now but instead go between rooms only after they’re asleep, we still need to be prepared for them to discover us in bed together at some point; it’s something that happens to nearly all parents at one point or another no matter how careful they are.”
“And there will of course be questions if they do; obviously they’re not old enough yet to understand even the most basic of explanations, but because we aren’t married we also aren’t really in a position to use some of the easier ones such as that it’s just what mommies and daddies do. I don’t actually have a solution in mind yet myself, we can talk about it and come up with one together; but I wanted to give you a chance to get a head start on considering it yourself if you hadn’t already.”
He gives her a quick peck and leaves to go get the children, and once again she is amused by him being two steps ahead of her; of course she hadn’t even begun to consider such things, she’d never had to because the twins were away for the whole of her time with Severus (she feels a small pang in her heart at this thought, that Severus never got to meet them as he’d wanted to, and that they never got to meet their half-brother Albus’s father either. Nor even to meet Albus until he was basically a toddler for that matter; but, as they were still so young themselves, they had just accepted his appearance about the same way they accepted Teddy’s when he’d also come to stay with Ted and Andromeda – as just another built-in playmate. The adaptability of young children never ceases to amaze her).
And, Remus is right; they probably do need to think about it. Obviously it’s not going to cause lasting harm to their children even if they did catch them in bed together, there are plenty of single parents in the world that have to deal with this.
But as usual, what he’s actually doing is solving a problem before it happens, making sure they’ll be on the same page with it if it does, and not throwing even more potential confusion on top of it by not reacting the same way to it. He really surprises her constantly; and he definitely makes for an amazing parent as well. Of course, he’d already been a really awesome teacher in her book, her third year at Hogwarts; she isn’t all that surprised that he’s taken to parenthood (of four children, no less) like a duck to water as well.
*****************
Remus comes back with the children and their clamor fills the house; and Evie just listens to it for a while, thinking how empty her life would be without them. And how hard it would be, without Remus there to help her.
Even completely aside from the more recent (and wonderful) physical part, he has given her so much over these past couple of years; help with the children, an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on, wise council to keep her from doing something foolish. Someone to laugh with, and someone to weep with; and they’ve done plenty of both. She’s just not sure how she could possibly manage without him, now.
And that last thought stops her dead in her tracks, feeling like she’s just been run over by the Knight Bus. She’s thought it many times before, but the real significance of the thought has never hit her until now. She imagines what it would be like, if he found someone else; imagines him moving out to start a new life, taking Teddy with him. Imagines how lost she would feel, and how hurt the children would feel at losing both him and Teddy. Or the same in reverse, if she found someone else.
It would be just like…getting a divorce. And would have been even before last night happened as well. Somehow, without any of them even realizing it, they’ve quite strongly knitted themselves into a real family; one that would be very painful to ever split apart again. For once, she thinks that maybe she has come to a realization of something even before Remus has, she’s not sure that even he realizes what a sense of permanence they and their children have already forged between them collectively.
It leaves her rather sober for the rest of the day and into the evening; and, after the kids are in bed and she and Remus are settled on the couch, he asks her why so quiet – he hopes that she’s not having regrets about what they’ve done? She looks up at him quickly and smiles, saying “Oh, no – no, not at all, not even a little.”
He smiles back and asks, “Do you want to talk about what’s on your mind?”
She frowns a bit and replies, “I’m not sure, Remus. But…given what you said earlier, about being honest, maybe I’d better, even though I’m not sure.”
He squeezes her shoulder and just waits, letting her know that he’s listening.
She turns so that she’s facing him, and takes his free hand in both of hers, while his other arm is still on the back of the couch behind her. She looks at him and he looks back, waiting for what she has to say, and she looks down again, not having any idea where to start. She says, “Remus, I…” and then falters, and can’t continue.
He frees his hand from hers, putting it under her chin and tilting her head back up, searching her eyes; but for once he can’t divine what’s on her mind. She can see the concern in his eyes, that something is wrong; and that finally gives her the courage to start again. Still looking into his eyes, she says, still haltingly; “Remus, I…I think we ought to consider getting married.”
