Falling into Destiny
Chapter Forty
Snape moved around the dim potions classroom as he inspected the fruits of everyone’s labors. From the look on his face you could tell that the Weasleys had exceeded Snape’s expectations on their potion but he would have been damned before complimenting them. As he moved over towards you there was a moment when you found yourself trying to peer behind his eyes. After forcing yourself to rip your gaze from his, you heard Snape’s sound of approval over your potion.
“5 points to Slytherin as it seems that so far yours is the only potion that was brewed above the standard level,” Snape said in his drawn out way.
You smiled even as you avoided the intense gaze of your teacher. It wasn’t that he was peering at you in any unusual way - he just had an intense stare. There was so much locked behind those black eyes of his that you really wanted to go through but you knew better to make eye contact. As it was even without looking him in the eye you already had the sensation of a flowery scent floating through your head. Something about how well you had done had reminded him strongly of a flower. Which was beyond weird as the potions room was so far away from smelling that nicely. An aging potion wasn’t exactly spring fresh.
“Show off,” One of the girls near your station said under her breath.
You watched as Snape looked at the critical student sharply in reprimand. If that girl hadn’t been in Slytherin she probably would have gotten in trouble. As it was the look she’d received only made the jealousy she displayed silent though it was still present. You ignored her as you worked on cleaning up. One of the last things you wanted to do was stay in the room any longer than was necessary.
It wasn’t that you disliked potions. You merely had other plans for your afternoon. Ones that were far more enjoyable than sweating over a hot cauldron. Luckily for you, the Slytherin common rooms weren’t that far from the potions classroom. So once you were cleaned up it was only a matter of minutes before all your belongings were put up into your dorm. Sadly your exuberance was noticed by a certain second year on your way out.
“And where are you going?”
Draco didn’t exactly sound pleased when he asked you that question. From the way the common room quieted you could tell that more than one person was curious about why a second year, even one such as Draco, spoke so demandingly to a fourth year. After all, you had done your best to avoid him despite the tragic circumstances the school faced which meant that it wasn’t obvious how close you and he had once been. As no one knew your connection to Draco, running from a demanding second year would look like weakness. Despite the fact that you had been keeping your distance on purpose you also knew that you weren’t going to run from him in such a public space. You weren’t exactly fond of the idea of looking weak.
“I thought that was obvious.”
“Well?” He demanded as he finally got within normal conversation range.
“I’m going out,” you said simply.
You took the necessary steps to do just that. Which only seemed to invoke a certain ire from the other blond slytherin. He followed you right out of the common room to continue his interrogation.
“People are being petrified throughout the school,” Draco brought up as though you had somehow missed that fact, grabbing you by the wrist. “And you think now is a good time to go for a stroll?”
“Yes,” you answered easily enough as you started to detach his fingers from around your grip. “Don’t worry, last I checked whatever or whomever is attacking the school is going after muggleborns. So unless you’ve been spreading gossip about me around the castle...I’ll be safe.”
Moving Draco’s fingers from around your wrist meant that you lost that source of heat. Though considering that you still held his hand it wasn’t exactly lost so much as displaced. Either way the fact that he’d latched on to begin with was really spoiling your attempts to keep your distance. Why didn’t he understand that staying away from you was for his own good?
“You never told me where you were going,” Draco said in a sharp tone of voice for a twelve year old.
“I’m going to meet up with Darius,” you relented.
“Why?”
“Aside from the fact that he’s a friend?” You ventured before dropping into a whisper. “With most students going home for the holidays tomorrow, you should know why I’m meeting with him.”
Draco pulled his hand back as he glared at you. Suddenly you were reminded of the hatred in your aunt’s eyes when she first found out your circumstances and that chilled you to the bone. You wanted to stop him to explain that you were taking care not to escalate situations. And that in reality you were doing your best to choose the lesser of two evils. Somehow trying to explain that to him when he had such anger in his eyes made it seem like a bad idea. Besides making him angry at your nature would keep him safe in a roundabout way.

“You’re not exactly shy are you?”
You looked up at the slightly taller Slytherin. Darius was in his sixth year and had grown up with grace, though he hadn’t grown a particular amount in the last few years.
“Not really,” you answered him as you stepped towards the large tub. “Why? Should I be?”
Apparently Darius didn’t have an answer for that. He watched as you stepped down into the tub as though entranced. The fact that you were wearing a swimsuit seemed to do very little to calm him down. Which was funny considering that this had mostly been his idea. He was the one that had gotten the password to the Prefects’ bathroom from Robert Hawking after all. And he was the one that had invited you to soak in the pool sized bath to help slake off the cold of the castle during the winter.
“Aren’t you going to get in?” You asked as you turned around to rest your arms on the side.
The water itself was so very warm which meant that you didn’t really want to get out. At this point you might have just been happy to wade around in the oversized tub with or without Darius joining you. The fact that you couldn’t swim didn’t really matter in the oversized tub. No matter where you walked you could still touch the bottom. Which meant that you were in no danger of drowning.
“Of course,” Darius said with a slight hitch in his voice, poorly hidden underneath a false confident look on his face.
You rolled your head on your arm as you looked up at him. He was quite nervous. You could practically feel his fear from where you were. Which seemed odd to you. He had stared at you as you transfigured your clothing into swimwear. He had even watched you get into the tub. And seeing as he didn’t know you were a cambion, you had no idea why he would be afraid. At least not until you realized he seemed to fumble a bit with taking off his own clothes. He wasn’t afraid, he was nervous. Odd but at least it made more sense.
You turned around slowly so that he knew you weren’t watching him get undressed. Apparently he hadn’t practiced transfiguring his clothes in his spare time as you had. Or if he had the results may have been poor. You moved away from the edge of the pool and just enjoyed the hot water seeping into your bones.
“Was Malinda going to join us?” You asked despite the fact that you already knew the answer.
“No. Why? Did you think she was going to be here?”
You smiled and chuckled. “No. Just thought I’d break the ice so it could melt before you ruined the bath.”
He finally made his way in. You turned around on the opposite side and took a seat, swinging your feet back and forth under the water. Despite the fact that you were mostly submerged it still seemed like Darius was distracted.
“Are you just using me to soak in the prefects’ tub?” He asked as he tried to get comfortable on the other side.
“If that’s what I wanted, I’d have tried getting to know Hawking. Plus Malinda would never let me live it down if I was that mean to you. She’d probably jinx me all around the castle when I least expected it.”
Darius finally cracked a smile. “Younger sisters can be annoying like that.”
“Is she the same at home as she is here?” You asked the older student across from you.
“Worse. She’s afraid of getting into trouble here because of Professor Snape. Not so at our house. You’re lucky you’re an only child.”
“If you say so.”
Then again you wouldn’t wish the struggle you’d gone through on anyone you actually cared about. Nor the multiple brushes with death that you have had. Then again who was to say that a younger sibling would have had your father as theirs?
“Then again, you practically grew up with Malfoy, right?”
“Pretty much,” you answered.
“How was that? The couple times I visited it seemed pretty different from how I’ve pictured you living.”
“And how have you pictured me living Hmm?”
“Curled up on a really soft couch with a blanket. With plenty of company and books to keep you busy.”
“Blankets, yes,” you answered as you moved towards him. “And I had plenty of books. But a lot of company? No, not really. Most days it was just Draco and I.”
“So Draco is like your younger brother.”
You shrugged before leaning your head back onto the stone. With how his friend Adrian had reacted to the idea of an arranged marriage the year before, you didn’t really want to see if Darius felt the same. There was also the fact that even if he did take it well, knowing that you were married would be counterproductive.
“Will you be excited to go home tomorrow?” You asked as you shifted the subject without bothering to lift your head.
“Maybe. You going to miss me?” He lobbied back at you.
“Maybe,” you teased. “At least you come up with creative dates.”
Finally you moved your head so that you could look him in the eyes. What you felt from him wasn’t all that surprising. You were alone with him in nothing more than your swimsuit after all. And despite the fact that you were fourteen and he sixteen, your physical development was misleading. Your hips had already curved out to the same level as some adults while your chest had grown to fill a large hand already; even your face had less of a baby look to it compared to most other kids your own age. So his thoughts were generally the ones you expected him to entertain. And while it was in your nature to fulfill them, you set certain limits. After all you hadn’t made time to learn or to make a contraceptive potion yet.
But that didn’t mean you couldn’t have some fun with your boyfriend before the holidays.
