His great plan
Albus Dumbledore was pacing his office with an irritated frown on his face. He tried to contemplate what the hell was going on. How had every attempt to feed the boy the potion failed? He knew the hero of the wizarding world wasn´t stupid in any sense, except when it came to potions, so how? How was it possible that he wasn´t under his control by now? But that was not the only thing that bothered him as of late. He had completely lost his grasp on the boy. He was never able to find him around the castle. The only times he got to see him was at breakfast though he was told that he never missed a class. It was like he wasn´t staying at the school outside of them at all.
“But where did the little nuisance and his little followers disappear to?” He spoke the thought out loudly frustrated to no end. Other than the obvious, there were no other reports from any of his sources inside the castle. He made it a habit to have at least one student in each house report back to him anything they might hear or see in the common rooms but nothing suspicious had been reported. He looked at his clock and sighed before relaxing his face into his normal mask. He wore it well and he knew it. The small, kind smile, his signature twinkle in the eye, he played this character for a long time and at one time he thought that he may actually be able to become the man he pretended to be. But that was a long time ago. Now a days he couldn´t wait until the time finally came for him to take over the wizarding world. He would have to tell the boy about the horcruxes so that he can go looking for them.
I only hope he doesn´t kill himself while he looks for them. Dumbledore thought while he made his way to the great hall for lunch. His plan depended on the final battle. It needed to take place here, so that he could create chaos after the boy killed Riddle. It would be simple. Get near a death eater and sent the killing curse at the next best person. As soon as another spell was fired the battle would resume and he could sneak around to take out Potter and this annoying best friend of his. With the hero and the girl gone he would step up again as the symbol of light and this time he would accept the post of minister of magic. The Weasley boy would be no trouble. With his best friend and girlfriend gone, he was sure that the idiot would kill himself like a stupid Gryffindor would do.
No one will be standing in my way when I am done with them. I will remain the greatest wizard of all time. I will be unstoppable. He looked around the room after he sat down at the head of the table. His eyes scattered the Gryffindor table and he sighed heavily when he saw that the golden trio was ones again absent.
“Is everything alright Albus?” Minerva asked.
“Yes and no, my dear friend. I am most worried about our young Harry. Did you notice that he´s never really around?”
“No, I haven´t Albus. What do you mean? He´s in class every day and I just saw him a few hours ago at breakfast.” Minerva said nonchalantly although she cringed at the inside. They all knew that Albus would start asking questions at some point.
“Yes, I recall him being here this morning, as he is every morning, but I haven´t seen him at any other meal in months. I´m quite worried about his mental state at this point.”
“Oh, come on Albus.” Severus spat after listening to his colleagues.
“Surly you’re not stupid enough to fall for such an obvious way of attention seeking. The boy is fine, this is just another one of his attempts to have the whole school talking about him. It´s what his father always used to do as well. But we all know by now that he´s just like him.”
“You should really stop insulting him all the time Severus. You are the only person here who thinks that Harry is a fame seeking bully. He isn´t his father, he never was and even if he was a little bit like him when he first came here, he changed a lot over the past few years. He is polite and humble, he does well in his classes… Don´t you look at me like that Severus Snape. I always check the progress of my students in any class, so I know that he hasn´t failed an assignment in your class for weeks.”
“That is because he teamed up with Granger in every single class. Everyone knows that the easiest way for an O is partnering up with that annoying little piece of…”
“Severus! That is quite enough.” Dumbledore scolded him and Severus had to suppress his laugh.
“What if you´re wrong? What if Harry really is unstable. He has so much on his shoulders, would you really blame him?”
“He looked fine this morning.”
“He could wear a glamour.” As Dumbledore said it, Severus breath caught in his throat. If Dumbledore would try to check Harry for glamours… No that was not a risk he was willing to take. He didn´t even want to think what could happen if the old man were to discover that Harry is pregnant.
“Do you really think Potter is smart enough to think of something like that? I highly doubt that that kid had one logical thought in his life.”
“He has been wearing a glamour every year when he came back to school since his third year, I think… Severus did something happen between you and the boy? Something I should know about? You seem to be even more hostile towards him today. You know that at some point I need you two to work together and I really think you should try to get over all that unfounded animosity you bear inside you.”
“No, nothing happened. I´m just sick of having to deal with his antics and little problems. And what the hell do you mean? Why would Potter wear a glamour every year?”
“I would like to know that to Albus.” Minerva said and she had to push hard not to let her rage show.
“I´m afraid I don´t know.”
“You never asked him?”
“I always thought that he would come talking to me when he was ready to confide in someone but I´m afraid he never did. I didn´t want to intrude on his personal business.” Severus couldn´t supress the snort that slipped from his lips. Dumbledore looked at him disapproving. He just couldn´t believe that Dumbledore had no trouble lying to their faces.
“Do you have anything to say to me Severus?”
“I do actually Albus. All you have done the past six years is meddle in his life and even worse, you let him run around the castle doing what ever he wanted. It wouldn´t even surprise me if you encouraged him. Black couldn´t wait to rub it in my face that you told him and that girl to go back in time to safe that Hippogriff which in turn let to his escape. You didn´t listen to me after I told you that there is something wrong with that kid after he spoke parseltounge in front of the entire school. You even let him compete in that stupid tournament, and you are telling me that the one time even I think you should have meddled in his life your first thought was that you shouldn´t?”
“Really Severus, there wasn´t much need to encourage him to do anything. Sirius Black was an innocent man. You know that by now, and you still think he should have received the kiss? And you of all people should know that there are some things that shouldn´t be forced out of someone because it could cause even more harm to do so.” Severus cringed at the mention of the kiss. No, as much as he had hated Black, he didn´t think he deserved the kiss anymore. Seeing how much pain the dog’s death had caused the man he loved had softened his heart towards his childhood enemy. Harry had told him every little detail about their time together. Had relayed every conversation they´d had and even he had to admit that Black must have changed a lot after his time in Askaban. Still, he wasn´t about to let Dumbledore know about his little revelation.
“He did try to kill me if you remember. And yes, I am still mad that he wasn´t expelled for that one. But then again, the whole group of them should have been expelled at least five time before that ever happened so I should not have been surprised that you would let them get away with attempted murder as well. By your latest comment I assume I am correct that you are worried about the same thing that I was as soon as you mentioned the glamour.”
“I´m afraid so Severus, why else would he wear a glamour. I should have listened to you Minerva. We should never have left him with his relatives.”
“What are you saying Albus?” She asked as she would be expected to do.
“We think that Harry was wearing a glamour so that no one would discover that he was abused at home.” She narrowed her eyes at him.
“You knew about the glamour and not ones thought of telling me about your suspicions? I´m his head of house Albus, I´m supposed to look after my students. I took an oath to serve and protect the students inside of this walls and I can´t do that if I do not know that there is someone in need. What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that Harry deserves to have some sort of control of his own life. He chose to keep his treatment at home secret, could you imagine what the poor boy would have gone through if the daily prophet would have found out about this? By the way, has either of you noticed how much the prophet changed his way of reporting recently? I find it rather curious, especially since I heard that Rita Skeeter is the one in charge now.”
“Don´t you change the subject Albus. We were talking about Harry.”
“When are we not talking about the brat.” Severus said, McGonagall glared at him before looking back at the old man.
“You really are worried about him aren´t you?”
“Yes, I am. What if the whole knowledge of the prophecy his too much for him. He´s only seventeen and has to face the fact that he has to go against the most dangerous wizard of all time.” Severus kept his frown from his face as he saw the gleam in the headmasters’ eyes at his words. Something just didn´t sit right with him. He hadn´t much time to think about it because just after a few seconds Minerva asked Dumbledore what they were going to do.
“I was thinking that maybe you Severus could use your abilities as spy to try and figure out were he and his friends disappear to all of the time. I´m sure if someone can find out what they are up to, it surely is you.”
“You just love this don´t you? It´s not enough that I have to teach him, no you want me to overlook his stupid little club, do my normal spying duties, brew the potions for the hospital wing, take on a student teacher all while grading and preparing for lessons. No, now you want me to also spy on that golden weapon of yours. I do not have the time. I´m barely sleeping as it is, If I take on anymore, I won´t have time to do so at all. What good will I do you when I´m slowly going insane?”
“Oh, come on Severus. You can let Mr. Malfoy grate all the papers, except for the ones of his year. He should be able to brew most of the potions for the hospital wing as well. If I remember correctly, he was always one of your top students. I know you´re not the potions master anymore, and I know that normally the potions master does the brewing for the school, but you are the best and you know it. You´re the boy´s godfather, I am sure you taught him to the best of your abilities so that he can assist you in the task. That´s why I launched the program at all. We all know that the war has started, and we all knew it would happen as last summer arrived. It was only a matter of time. The fact that Tom waited until Harry was of age before trying to go after him again is astonishing. He knows as good as anyone that Harry would come into his full magical powers the second, he turns seventeen. I knew that all the teachers would need more time for Order related business. I need you to look out for him my boy. You know as well as I do that, he is our only hope. We need him to be alive and ready when the time comes.” Severus sighed in defeat and nodded. It was a well-established routine by now. Dumbledore would tell him some shocking revelation, then ask him to do something that wouldn´t come in a normal job description. He would then make a fuss; Dumbledore would reason with him until he gave in. It was always the same, and he got sick and tired of pretending to be this man’s loyal subject.
“Very good Severus, I expect you to report back to me as soon as you find something.” Dumbledore said while he stood up to leave. He took a few steps before turning around ones more.
“Oh, and Severus, you should really put the whole Sirius thing to rest. He´s dead, and he won´t come back.” Severus waited until he was sure that the old man wouldn´t be able to hear anything they say, before letting out an angry growl.
“Can you believe that man? Sits hear, lying to our faces without blinking and pretending to care what happens to Harry.” He asked looking at Minerva who shook her head disbelievingly.
“This is not good Severus, he´s starting to ask too many questions.”
“I know.”
“What are we going to do?”
“We will bring it up tonight at the meeting. We need a solution, and quickly.”
“Yeah… Well, we better get going too. It´s not much time until class starts.”
“Very well, I will see you tonight, Severus.” Minerva said and he followed her out the hall.
Albus was quite happy when he came back to his office. Yes, he thought that went rather well indeed. Tell them enough to do what you say, but not so much that they start to think about it too much. He had one less thing to worry about for the moment. Severus would handle it and it would probably be a few days, maybe even a week before he would discover something. He was good, Albus knew that, but he also knew that that Granger girl was good as well, maybe even better. One of his other and for the moment even bigger worries was Remus Lupin. He had tried to get in contact with him at Grimauld place a few times and hadn´t reached him ones. He was most curious what the werewolf was up to since he certainly hadn´t given him an assignment. So were would the man go all the time in times like these. He had even written a letter and put a tracking charm on the owl, but she just returned the letter to him after a few days had passed. He sent Fawkes looking for him just this morning with a message to call in and was confident that his most loyal familiar would not fail him. He had thought a lot about his dismissal of that half giant, and he had to admit that it may was a mistake to act so quickly. True, he had no reason to keep him around, but Hagrid had been fiercely loyal before he had left for his assignment and his fury about him failing his task had got the better of him. Dumbledore knew that it was never wise to turn a loyal subject against himself. Betrayal is very good fuel to turn into revenge. But what´s done is done and he was just relieved that he wouldn´t have to listen to the idiot and his stupid pet monster stories anymore. He had been useful for a while. His personal bad history with Riddle had made it easy to convince him to help him out with some manual task ones in a while. He had unknowingly given him more insight into the boy then anyone else. Hagrid the lovable giant who is adored by all was indeed a very good choice of Harry´s first contact into the wizarding world. He knew the man was smitten with the boy as soon as he got him out of the ruin in Godric´s Hollow, if not even before then. James and Lilly really were very popular at Hogwarts. And he knew that Harry would take a liking to him very quickly. Hagrid was the person who rescued the boy from that terrible home. For that fact alone the boy would be grateful to him forever.
“Just like I planned it. Well, nothing left to do but wait until I get more information.” Dumbledore said to himself before he put on a rope and left to visit the one person, he always told everything to.
Severus sat in his last class of today. Luckily it was first years so he didn´t need to pay too much attention. He could handle any misshape in a few seconds. There was one thing Dumbledore said that got him thinking. Black wasn´t coming back, was repeatedly sounding in his head. When Albus said it, it was like a kick in his stomach. Black was dead, he knew that, then why was the thought bothering him so much. It hit him like lightning. The veil, the body went through the veil. Their hadn´t been a body to burry. There wasn´t a funeral either, somehow it made Black´s death unreal until now.
But how can we know if he´s really dead if there is no actual body? That thought bothered him even more. What was that veil thing in the first place? Why had no one bothered to ask someone in the ministry?
Probably because no one would have answered the question. He thought and added that now that they were in an alliance with Scrimgeour that fact might have changed. Maybe he would even allow him to have a look at that bloody thing. Perhaps he could come up with a way for Black to cheat death. The thought oddly thrilled him. He was astounded to see that it seemed like he finally got over his hatred for the man. His heart started beating excitedly when he thought about Harry´s reaction should he succeed. In that moment he made a vow to himself.
I really would do anything for you Harry. If only I could show you just how much I love you. I will do anything I can to get him back to you. I don´t know if I can, but I will bloody try.
That evening the entire DA gathered at headquarters for the meeting. In the last few days, they had gained a huge number of people for their cause. Angelina Johnson had made contact with her cousin over seas and the girl had worked the last two weeks to gather anyone and everyone she knew had lost someone to the dark lord. Severus was sickened to see just how many people were there. There were three girls, sisters, and one boy who had lost their entire families. The youngest was only nine. He knew she wouldn´t join the order but Angelina´s cousin, who was only twenty-six herself, had adopted all four children and wouldn´t leave them alone at home while she went away. Severus thought she looked familiar and when he asked, he discovered that she had spent her last year at school in Hogwarts. He thought to remember her to be quite brilliant, although she too was sorted into Gryffindor. Luna volunteered to watch the kids while the meeting took place and Ginny joined her as well. After they had gone the whole contract thing out of the way, Hermione and Harry took a few minutes to roughly explain what they knew but asked them to stay behind after a meeting for further details. They had decided that it would take well too much time to always have to explain the whole story, so they sat down one evening and talked about all off it in detail, then extracted the memory and put it into another pensive at headquarters. That would spare them to have the same conversation over and over again.
“Before I ask for any new business, I have a task for every single one of you. I need all of you to become proficient in occlumency. We made sure that you cannot tell anyone about our organisation as you know, you all read the contract before you signed it. That won’t stop Voldemort from ripping the information from your mind if you don´t protect it. We have a book copy for every one of you. Severus here, has written it himself, since he is the most skilled occlumence there is. We need you to read it and practice with each other. Choose a friend, someone you don´t mind to much being in your head and start practicing. There is everything you need to know about legemancy in the book as well. Now to business. Minister, do you have something that needs addressing to?”
“Yes, thank you Harry. We have made a good amount of process with the warding in London since the weekend. Thanks to the help of the DA, we have a quarter of the muggle population done in only two days. There is the problem, that yes, we can ward the individual houses, but we cannot ward public places. At some point Riddle will figure out that he won´t get to them at their houses anymore and will attack in the open. I would rather not have another incident like the bridge that came down last year.”
“That sounds like progress. About the other matter, there is nothing we can do about that. We all know that there will be many casualties to this war. The most horrible part is, that most of them will be muggles. They don´t have the means to defend themselves against us. It´s horrible, but there is nothing we can do about it. After the first public attack, Major will make the recommendation to stay safe at home, but it is up to the people to listen to him. Do you have anything else?”
“No, not at this moment.”
“Very well, anyone else?”
“Yes Harry, Minerva and I had an unnerving conversation with Albus today. He has started asking questions and has ordered me to find out what´s wrong with you and where you, Ron and Hermione disappear to.”
“Bloody perfect! That´s just what we need right now.”
“What should we do?”
“I don´t know…” Harry rubbed at his eyes.
“Sooner or later, I have to tell him something. Has anyone an idea?”
“Tell him that you discovered that we use a portkey to go somewhere. He knows that there is no way to track them without getting your hands on it.” Ron suggested.
“I can´t do that, it´s against the school rules to leave the castle without permission of the headmaster.”
“What about moaning myrtles bathroom. Did he tell you that the entrance is there?”
“No, he didn´t. I don´t think he told any of the teachers. Only Minerva was with him when Harry and Ron came back and told him what had happened.”
“Then you can tell him that you saw us going into the bathroom a few times. He will figure that we´re down there. He will surely want to talk to us about it, and if he does, we just tell him that we three train down there were no one can walk in on us.”
“That could work, but he wants me to find out if Harry is mentally stable. He says he´s worried because he only sees him at breakfast, so he thinks he´s not eating. When I told him that he looked fine, he suggested that he might wear a glamour.” Severus didn´t need to say anything else. To the people who knew about Harry´s pregnancy, the threat was clear enough. Dumbledore knew Harry wears a glamour and was determined to find out why. Severus watched Harry who went a little pale at his words and Harry met his eyes.
“That is indeed a problem. One I don´t know how to fix just yet. We will think about it in the coming days. Someone else?”
“I want to go and try to recruit some of my kind.” Remus said to Harry.
“I´m afraid if I don´t they will either fall prey to you know who or will join his ranks in fear to never finding another place they can go to. We can provide them with Wolfbane and maybe we could find housing for them as well. I know most would choose to be on the good site. Most of us were created by dark creatures. Dangerous man and woman who forced their life on innocent people. Getting infected, the pain, it´s worse then the crutiatus, and I should now, I was under the curse a few times, ones you know who himself cast it on me so I can tell you, it´s bad. They wouldn´t want to follow someone as dark as him.” Harry, Severus and Remus cringed when they all remembered just how painful it is to get hit with it by the dark lord himself.
“I have no problem with that, but I will not allow you to go alone. I need at least one other volunteer to go with you. The times are to dark for single missions.” Harry said glancing at Severus who only rolled his eyes at him.
“So… you just let me do it? I must have asked Dumbledore a hundred times and he was never…” At Harry´s outraged look on his face he quickly changed course.
“But of course, I know you´re not him. Thank you. Anyone interested?” He asked into the room.
“I could go.” Bill Weasley said without hesitation. Fleur glared at him.
“What? You heard Harry, he can´t go alone and we should try to get as many of them on our site as we can. You know Voldemort will order them to do horrible things.”
“And why do you have to go? It is so dangerous Bill.”
“Because me and Remus worked together before and we´re a good team. Also, who would you sent in. You said it yourself, it´s very dangerous so who would you want to take the danger?”
“No one, of course no one. I know it has to be done, that doesn´t mean that I am happy about it. You better come back to me in one-piece Billius Wealsey.”
“I will do my best honey, I promise.” He threw her his most brilliant smile, and she rolled her eyes but took his hand smiling softly.
“One moment Bill, I really don´t think this is a good idea.” Mrs. Weasley said crossing her arms in front of her chest.
“Mum… Not you too.” Bill whined and Ron grinned.
“Bill, your fiancé is right. For ones I am in agreement with her. It´s too dangerous.”
“I´m an adult mum. I do not need your permission. You know Remus will take care of me as good as he can, and we are at war. No one is safe, not really.”
“But…”
“Enough please. I can and am able to make my own decisions. Remus I´m in. Let´s get your fellow´s.” Lupin nodded and thanked him.
“Very good. The auror program starts soon and we need volunteers to take a special course in the evenings. That is for all six and seventh´s year students in the DA. We need at least three, I would like it if it were more like ten or twelve. It is not official auror training, but you will learn most of the techniques they use. There will also be new ones that will be incorporating muggle techniques as well. You will have till the start of next week to tell me Ron or Hermione if you want to do it. When your training is complete, you will be in charge of teaching all the other students in the DA. Some you will even teach to the younger ones. You will not teach them anything that will do too much harm. They’re not mature enough to have such knowledge yet. We do not want someone to kill his friend because they had a little disagreement. The more serious stuff is only for fifth year and up.”
“Draco, Harry and I need at least two people to help us with research. There are some things we need to do to end this war and you should know, in order to be privy to that information, we will require an unbreakable vow, to not EVER talk to ANYONE about what you learned and to NEVER attempt to try making something like it your own. You should know, this is not dark staff, it´s the worst of the worst. Only knowing about it, reading about it can and will disturb you to no end. I know it doesn´t sound very tempting, but it is most important that we learn everything about it that we can. If we do not know what we are fighting, we stand no chance in winning.” Hermione said making sure to put enough force behind the important words.
“I will do it.” Cho offered immediately.
“But I will talk to Ron about it.”
“That´s okay, he already knows about it.”
“I´m in too.” Collin Creevy said and smiled at Harry who was glad that Collin had overcome his star strugged phase. Harry had watched him at DA meetings and Collin had become quite the capable wizard since they started training back in fifth year. He was quick on his feet and Harry saw time and again that he threw up shields to help his brother while fighting himself. They had overcome the spell learning phase rather quickly and were now actually duelling. They had them train one on one and in groups. The first thing Harry had taught them while paring them up in groups mixed with students from every house, was that they should trust an instinct to find a leader within the group. Then to come up with a plan, to try and overcome your opponent. He told them to ask every single member of the group to repeat the plan ones before they started the fight. Harry was extremely satisfied that every single group stated firmly that the plan was to disarm and bind rather than attack and injure. He was very proud indeed. Just a few weeks before had he told the story of his fight in the graveyard. He hadn´t talked about Cedric, still after three years, the pain too great. But he had told them about the duel himself. He admitted that the only reason why he used expelliarmus was that he really didn´t know a much more useful spell at the time, but also told them that in the end, that was what saved his life. He made it clear to every single person in the room, that they wouldn´t be a way out of this war without them doing harm as well, but made it perfectly clear, that the goal should always be capture not kill. He knew he had impressed the students and saw a proud look on Severus´s face.
“Thank you, Collin. That is great. I have two more things and then I think we should call it a night. Stefan, I would like you to start more training at Durmstrang as well. You have to be very careful though, not to mention the DA at all. I know that you learn different stuff then we do here, you will have to continue teaching the dark arts to everyone. When you announce extra training, students will come and ask what for. Just tell them that you are getting ready for a fight. Read from their reactions. The death eaters would probably think that you mean their fight and will lower their guard when you talk to them. Others might state that they will fight against Voldemort. Reserve the really advanced stuff for these students. For everyone else, teach the normal stuff with a little extra stuff so they don´t get suspicious. Minister, if you have the time, I would like you to contact the American minister and recommend building blood wards there as well. You said that your good friends with two others as well so tell them as well. The sooner they start the better.” Scrimgeour nodded and Harry dissolved the meeting. The minister left rather quickly, and Severus had to hurry to catch him in time.
“Minister!” He called after him and Scrimgeour turned to look at him.
“Professor Snape.”
“I was wondering if I could ask a favour of you.”
“That depends on the favour I guess.”
“Please, if you could come back in, I would rather no one overhears us speaking.” Scrimgeour nodded and followed him back inside. Harry gave him a curious look but stayed seated on the couch. Severus called Hermione over and together the three of them disappeared into the basement. Severus let them into the sitting room and conjured two glasses of fire whiskey and a butterbeer for Hermione.
“Severus what is this about?”
“I have brought you here because I need to ask the minister a favour and I will need your help later on. Minister, do you remember the battle in the ministry two years ago?”
“Yes, I do. Fudge was still in charge then. A handful of students was injured, and Sirius Black was killed.”
“Yes, of course you know that Harry was there. The other students that were there with him were the original members of the DA. Harry and Hermione started the group when Umbridge was here, and Harry taught him what she wouldn´t. That night, everyone found out that Harry had told the truth all along and Black was exonerated of his crimes. Do you know what happened when he was killed?”
“No, Fudge never told me the details.”
“When Bellatrix Lestrange hit her cousin with the killing course, he stood in front of a veil which he fell through and disappeared. I was wondering if you know what that veil is exactly.”
“I do actually. It´s the ministries biggest kept secret. Legend says that Merlin found the veil when he was traveling through south America when he was around sixty years old. The whole world knew his name by then and the locals allowed him to take it with him so he could study it. They were afraid of it. There were people who could hear voices coming from the veil. Some said they heard gentle whispers, some stated that they heard angry or sad screaming. They were glad to get rid of it really. Merlin studied the veil for over fifty years. His notes are buried in the deepest and darkest place in the ministry. Apparently, the veil is the door to the place people end up who went to soon. Who´s life´s were taken by another. But not all murder victims end up there. Fate is an unpredictable thing. Some peoples fate is getting murdered. To die was their purpose and that is that. But there are the ones who´s purpose wasn´t served before they were ripped from life and Merlin believes that these are the people who are behind the veil.”
“So, does that mean what I think it does? There could be a way to bring those back?” Hermione whispered astonished.
“Theoretically yes.”
“But?” Severus asked.
“The different voices Merlin mentioned. He believes that the only people who can hear them are the people who have lost someone by another´s hands. The whispers he believes are good souls, who want their left behind loved ones two know that there is no threat. The angry voices though, he believes that they are very dangerous and dark souls. Psychopaths who aren´t able to feel emotion or empathy at all. A fourteen-year-old girl came across the veil ones. It was located near a local village and one day they heard screams like nothing they´d every heard before. They ran towards the noise and came to the veil. The girl was screaming her lungs out, she lay on the floor, shaking and crying and before anyone could stop her, she took a knife she was carrying and slit her throat. The villagers were shaken badly. They had people telling them that they heard terrible screams before, but nothing to this extent. Can you imagine what that little girl must have heard? That she would rather slit her throat then to listen to it any longer?” Hermione was horrified, but her curious mind couldn´t help but wander.
“Merlin determined that it was way to dangerous to ever try and get someone back. The risk to big that they would bring back a monster that would try to destroy the world. He stopped his research and all his notes were buried. Not many people know about it. Merlin only told the minister of magic and he in turn told the one after him. That went on for a few hundred years until one decided to tell the head of the auror department should know as well. Since then, it stayed that way, until today that is. I don´t think I have to tell you that I wouldn´t appreciate it becoming common knowledge.”
“Of course, minister, this information will be strictly `must know`.” Hermione assured him.
“I assume you want to study the veil. That is the favour you want to ask for?”
“Indeed.” Scrimgeour looked anxious.
“Did you not hear the story I just told you?”
“I did.”
“Then why would you want to go there?”
“Because I have a theory, but I have to see it, study it if I want to confirm it.”
“Can I ask what your theory is?”
“You can, after everything you told us, I think that only the people who lost someone and can hear the voices or a family member of that person, since they are directly and strongly connected, will be able to pull someone from the veil. The different voices, some friendly some not, should tell you who would be safe to pull out. Merlin knew many a wizard. And were close friends with many who were murdered as well. It would be only logical that he would hear all of them who were there. I´m sure he knew a few quite dark ones as well, which is why it would be only logical that it scared him. If someone who lost only one person would stand before the veil, I think he would only hear that one voice. The one who he or she lost.”
“That makes a disturbingly amount of sense. And it would certainly explain why Merlin wouldn´t want to try it at all. It was too dangerous for him to try, but that doesn´t mean that it is for everyone.” Hermione concluded.
“Exactly. Will you allow us to have a closer look at it?”
“Fine, research only, for now. We see what you find out and go from there. This is most intriguing I must say. We lost many good people to Voldemort. Some have still relatives that are left behind. If it would be safe to bring them back, we could have a few very powerful allies.”
“Thank you minister.”
“I want you to come in tomorrow. I want you to start as soon as possible. I will make sure that no one will be disturbing you and I will try my best to find Merlin´s notes.”
“Don´t bother. If Merlin worked under the premiss that it would be too dangerous the notes will reflect just that. They won´t be of help. We will have to do the research ourselves. At what time should we be there?”
“You can arrive anytime after six. That should go with your timetable.”
“Very well, Harry will come as well. I know he will not give in until I tell him what we talked about. He lost the last argument; he will not lose this one.”
“You know him well Severus. But I think it´s for the best. Harry doesn´t do very well with life changing surprises. If you are right and we are able to get him back, he will need time to prepare for it. You can´t just walk in with him. Not if you don´t want to give him a heart attack.”
“Your right.”
“I´m surprised that you are willing to try it at all. I thought you hate Sirius.”
“I did, but Harry changed me. I am not that spiteful, bitter man anymore. If Black is willing to try, I have no objections to do the same. I however will not let him verbally abuse me without shooting back.”
“Right, I should really be going. I have to stop by my office before I can go home. I will see myself out.” And with that Scrimgeour left.
“Have I told you how glad I am how everything played out. I am so happy that Harry found someone who loves him so much, who would be willing to bring back his childhood enemies.” Hermione smiled at him waiting for her words to sink in.
“I have to admit that I am glad as well and… wait a minute, did you just say enemieS like in plural?”
“Oh, you caught that did you?”
“Explain!”
“I really thought you would catch it faster you know…”
“GRANGER!”
“Alright, alright! Harry could hear voices, multiple voices and that was even before Sirius died. We all know that Sirius is behind the veil because we saw him disappear in there, but it was when we came in, before the order even arrived, that Harry and Luna were drawn to the veil because of the voices. Then all hell broke loose, and no one paid attention to them anymore I guess.”
“So… So, you think that…”
“Yes, I think that Lily and James are behind the veil. I could imagine maybe even Cedric. Voldemort said kill the spare. He was completely irrelevant to his plan. His death had no purpose at all. No one really knows but in the last few moments in the maze, when Harry and Cedric fought site by site and then decided to share their win, their bond became very strong. Harry told Cedric about the dragons when he found out before the first task. When Hagrid brought him with him to warn him about what was coming, he met with Madame Maxim who found out then as well. When Harry left, he bumped into Karkaroff so he knew about them beforehand too. He thought it was only fair that he tells Cedric so that they all start from the same advantage. There were a few days left before the first task so they all could prepare. Cedric in turn helped Harry with the golden egg. Although he just told him where to take the egg too. Myrtle was the one who told Harry to open the egg under water. He really could have been more specific. Harry told him exactly what was coming but that´s not the point. They build a kind of friendship that deepened a lot when they had only each other to fight for their life. I really think in the moment Cedric died, Harry considered him to be his brother, so it could be possible for him to pull him out as well.”
“I had no idea there was so much going on behind the scenes. Who helped him cheat on the third task?”
“No one. Ron and I trained with him day and night. We looked for useful jinxes. Even some you learn in seventh year and practiced until he could master them all. It helped us a lot too, though Ron did complain a lot about hitting the floor. As if it´s my fault that he kept falling next to the cushions.” Hermione said with a fond smile when she remembered Ron´s face after the fiftieth time he fell right next to them.
“He should be happy that he has you as friends.”
“Oh, believe me, he is. It wasn´t easy to crack him. You know that he only confided in us about his time at the Dursleys this year. But most kids have at least friends who keep them sane. Even when they are abused at home. Harry had no one. For ten years he had no one. I knew I liked him the moment I saw him. Even before I figured out that he is Harry Potter. There was something in his eyes back then and there still is. He was so grateful that we talked to him, just talked to him. It´s infuriating really. He still looks at as that way, not every minute of every day like he used to, but if I help him with hard homework. Ron always got offended when I wouldn´t let him copy, by not Harry. He always looked at me with his puppy eyes, just thankful that I believed that he could do it himself. I just pointed him to different sections of the text for reference and explained a word or technique he didn´t understand and he did the rest. I never had friends before Hogwarts either, but at least I know that my parents loved me very much.”
“If you wouldn´t have erased their memory they still would.”
“Don´t start with me on that.”
“No, I actually am serenely proud of you. I know you did it a long time ago and that back then, I would have called you stupid and too noble for your own good, but… You realized that with no fault of your own, you put your parents in terrible danger. Even after you found out how dangerous it would be to be close to Harry you never left his site. You are an extraordinary friend. Harry told me that you were the only person who believed that he didn´t volunteer to compete in the tournament and he told me how much it meant to him. It would have been easy to turn your back on him, follow peer pressure, Ron did. But you didn´t. That is very honourable. I understand that kind of commitment. It is how I felt about Lilly. It takes strength to make the right choices. And you certainly did right by your parents. You put your hurt and happiness aside and did what you have to do to keep them safe and I commend you for that. You are one hell of a strong young witch.” Hermione looked at him and one tear rolled down her cheek.
“Thank you, Severus, I had no idea how much I needed to hear that. You´re a good friend.”
“Come on, we have been down here for quite some time. Harry will be still waiting for us.” Hermione nodded and to his surprise she came over and pulled him into a hug before they made their way upstairs. They quickly left for Hogwarts and said good night. It was well after midnight and Severus was very tired.
“So, are you going to tell me what all that was about?” Harry asked while taking of his jumper.
“I will Harry, I have a free period before lunch, and I know that you have potions so Dudley will be in class for you. I promise I will tell you then. I am too tired to do it tonight. Is that alright?”
“Okay… Can you at least tell me, should I be worried?”
“No, not this time. If I´m right, I think you will be shocked but overjoyed. Just, try not to have too many expectations so you won’t be too disappointed should we not succeed.”
“Alright Sev, I can wait till tomorrow.”
“Good, now come to bed. I have to get up in four and a half hours and I really need some sleep.” Harry hurried to bed and settled down next to him and Severus looked at him disapproving. He grabbed his wand and removed Harry´s glamour and then turned the light down. The last few days, he had slept with his arm around Harry´s slightly swollen belly and he quite liked the feelings that rushed through him when he placed his hand upon it. Harry chuckled quietly at his antics, but it warmed his heart. He wondered for a while what the conversation the next day would be about but not too long after sleep crept upon him and pulled him into peaceful sleep.
