Chapter 41
Paula drove for many hours until she reached the high cliff in Cornwall where she had brought Severus. She apparated onto the shore and sat in the sand for the rest of the day. She did not move, eat or drink. Paula did not even shift as the waves came closer and closer, eventually reaching her feet and soaking her skirts, then surrounding her as the sea level rose and reached the rocks behind her.
Severus went back to his office. He paced his rooms and went back to his office again. He was angry, livid in fact. All his old resentments against James Potter and the marauders springing forth and engulfing him. Finding out Paula was a Potter was like James taking Lily from him. It wasn’t the same, but it felt the same. She’d spoken the truth when she reminded him that he accepted her for what she was, and that now he knew of her heritage all he saw was Potter, Potter through a red haze that threatened to overpower him. He wondered if the youngest Potter knew of her relationship to him. It was unlikely, he would have heard about it before now if he did.
He stepped outside, noticing the hearse was still missing as he headed round the castle towards the lake. It was well past sunset and Paula would normally have a fire lit by now, even though it was still cold enough that she stayed in the wagon, she still lit the fire outside before the sun set.
He turned and headed for the stables. He wondered if Riley was alright, if he was missing his mistress. He doubted it, he did not even understand why he cared about the damned animal.
Riley heard him approach and turned in the direction of the stable door, blowing softly down his nostrils when he recognised Paula’s man. He looked over and past the mans shoulder wondering where Paula was, the man never visited him alone before.
Riley sent Severus an image of Paula.
“I don’t know Riley. We had … words, she left in that contraption of hers. She told me things about herself that I did not take kindly to.” He absently stroked Riley as he spoke, I was very angry with her for concealing things from me, yet when she told me everything it seemed worse than when I was kept it the dark.”
Riley lowered his head and gave Severus a gentle nudge. Then sent an image of Severus and Paula bathing in the forest stream.
“I think not Riley. Besides, she would not take the hearse to go into the forest. Perhaps she has gone back to the Romanies.”
“Riley sent him image after image of Paula’s last meeting with those of her kind. He showed how she was chased off, the looks of hatred and malevolence on the faces of her people.
Severus was shocked, appalled. He hadn’t realised the day they collected Riley that she had been sent away in such a manner. She must have hurt something terrible, yet she’d said nothing of it to him.
Paula finally stood, the water sloshing roughly around her. It reached her upper arms and threatened to knock her off her feet and pull her into it’s depths as she stared out over the moonlit water. After quickly dipping herself beneath the waves, she rose quickly and apparated to the cliff top, cast a drying spell on herself and climbed into the hearse.
Severus and Riley had just taken to the skies in search of Paula when the hearse came into view.
The twin beams from the headlights momentarily blinding them both.
Paula swerved when she saw Riley in her headlights, shocked that he would be out at night without her.
As she pulled up beside the wagon, Riley landed softly and waited for Severus to slide from his back.
“Riley where were you going? Severus? I do not understand. Why were you with Riley? Where were you going?”
“Stupid woman, we were on our way to seek you out. You disappeared without a word to anyone. No one knew where you were or when you would be back.” He ranted angrily. “And what happened to you? Your hair is all tangled, your clothes are a mess. Where have you been?” He demanded.
“Sitting. Thinking. I was in Cornwall on the beach. Why, what do you care?”
“I did not say I cared, I … On the beach? Paula it is almost midnight, where did you go after the beach?”
“Here. I stayed until the tide came in and came back.”
“What on earth for? Why did you not stay here and think?”
“Because you were here, because you hate me for my name, because I could not stand the pain inside me that your revulsion caused.”
Severus was still holding onto the bridle and was jolted as Riley moved away from him to nuzzle Paula, taking him by surprise and causing him to move forward until he was standing directly in front of her.
They were millimetres apart, feeling each others breaths on their faces.
His hand slipped from the bridle and Riley wandered back to the stables, leaving Severus and Paula face to face.
Neither could find the ability to speak, neither felt able to move as the minute space between them seemed to crackle with an unfamiliar energy.
Paula was about to turn and head for the wagon when Severus grabbed her arms and pulled her to him, he captured her mouth with his, thrusting his tongue into her depths, not waiting for an invitation as he explored each and every crevice, duelled with her tongue, tasted her, absorbed her warmth and passion. He took it all with a fierce ardour, never wanting the kiss to end, one hand reaching to her lower back, pressing her close so she would feel what could no longer be hidden.
When he finally broke the kiss they were panting breathlessly. Had he let go of Paula right then she would have sunk to the ground.
Her legs were like jelly, a warm feeling in her stomach and her mind was spinning.
“Paula.” He said his voice low and husky with desire.
His voice seemed to bring her back to reality. She opened her mouth to speak but no words would come out. Reaching up she place her hand against his cheek softly, her eyes full of confusion before she turned and ran to the wagon, closing and locking the door behind her. She leaned back against it and sank slowly to the floor, taking great gulping breaths as she tried to calm herself.
Severus stepped closer and waited to see if she would reappear. He could hear her breathing, almost feel her warmth through the door as he held his hand to it. He gave a brief smile and went back to the castle, glad of the late hour so that no one would see the obvious state of his trousers.
