James led Umbridge deeper and deeper into the woods. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do
exactly, but he had to do something. He
wasn’t worried about the kids; Severus would take care of them and find out
what in the world was going on.
Umbridge was trying to stay close behind James, but was
having trouble keeping up. She tripped
several times and James made no move to help her up or even slow down. “Are we nearly there?” she asked, becoming
agitated.
James paused for a moment to glance up at the dark forest
canopy. “Nearly,” he answered. “It had to be somewhere a student couldn’t
find it accidentally.”
Umbridge stood behind James and looked up into the trees to
see what he was looking at. James took
advantage of her diverted attention and snatched her wand. She lunged to grab it back, but he snapped it
in half and tossed it to the forest floor.
Umbridge backed away, fear in her eyes. “I’m a very important Ministry official Mr.
Potter. If I don’t return-”
“The entire school will throw a party,” James finished her
sentence.
“Severus-”
“Is on my side,” James laughed, “as is Lucius Malfoy
actually. You see, Lucius is the one
I’ve been sleeping with. I’m sure Harry
and his friends are back in class, and Severus will go along with whatever
story I come up with.”
“Do you have anything else to say to me?” Umbridge asked,
obviously trying to stall.
“Yeah,” James said with a Cheshire
grin. “This’ll be more fun for me if you
run.”
Umbridge watched as James transferred into a large black
panther right before her eyes. “You’re-
you’re not registered!” she stammered.
James rolled his eyes and advanced on her, digging his long
sharp claws into the dirt. He was right
in front of her when she finally screamed and ran. He waited for a few minutes before giving
chase.
Severus burst into his classroom grumbling under his
breath. “What’s wrong?” Sirius asked as
he stood from the desk. “Where’s
James? What happened?”
“What happened is that I left your fool of a godson alone
for five minutes and he went rushing off to the Department of Mysteries with
his friends right into a trap.”
“Are you sure?” Sirius asked, panic in his voice.
Severus nodded.
“Harry seems to have a hero complex, and he received a message from the
Dark Lord that you were being tortured.”
“I… I need to rescue him!” Sirius cried.
“You need to alert the order,” Severus said as he grabbed a
hand of Floo powder and threw it into the fireplace. “Grimmauld Place,”
he called out and put his hand on Sirius’ shoulder. “Go, I’ll stay here.”
Sirius rushed through the fireplace and frantically contacted
everyone he could get hold of. They
rushed to the Ministry as fast as they could, and arrived just in time to find
Harry and Neville trying to fight off a group of Death Eaters.
Sirius had to admit he was impressed and very proud. Neville had been hit with some kind of jinx
that was making his legs wobble and his nose was gushing blood. Harry was trying to carry him out.
Lucius was shooting curses at Harry, deliberately missing
and shouting to the others to be careful not to break the prophecy. It was then that Sirius noticed the dusty
glass sphere in Harry’s hand. He had a
sudden appreciation for the kind of situation Lucius was in.
Severus waited until James returned, which was sooner than
he had expected. There were a few
streaks of mud on James’ robes, but other than that nothing looked out of
place. “Everything all right?” James
asked.
“No,” Severus answered.
“You need to have a chat with your son about not running off into a trap
to save the day. Oh, and he needs to
work on his Occlumency.”
“Why? What happened?”
James asked nervously.
Severus sighed and repeated the whole episode. “But don’t worry, Sirius went to alert the
Order. They’ll save his hide.”
James rushed out of the room. “James, wait!” Severus called after him,
knowing full well where he was going.
“You shouldn’t-”
When James was out of ear shot Severus shook his head and
returned to his potions. “Why does no
one ever listen to me?” he mumbled under his breath.
James frantically searched through the Department of
Mysteries. The noises of a battle led
him to the Death Chamber where he found Harry being choked by a masked Death Eater. Neville Longbottom was trying to help him, but
couldn’t because the blood pouring from his nose kept him from speaking
clearly. James swung hard at the masked
man’s head, hitting him in the temple and stunning him. As soon as Harry was clear he reached into
his boot to grab the dagger he always kept there, and in one swift fluid motion
slashed the Death Eater’s throat. The
man who turned out to be McNair grabbed at his throat as blood sprayed through
the air and he fell.
James only paused long enough to lift the hex off Neville
and then he joined the battle. All the
anger and frustration he felt over the past year poured out of him. The others might have been trying to stun and
incapacitate, but James was out for blood, and he was going to paint the walls
with it. He slashed and stabbed with the
dagger in one hand, and flung deadly curses with his wand in the other.
Dumbledore arrived not long after James did, and Death
Eaters started falling like flies. James
kept one eye on Harry and the other on whoever he was dueling. Lucius surprised everyone and turned on his
fellow Death Eaters. He threw off his
mask and sent a slashing curse at Dolohov.
James saw someone throw a curse at Lucius’ back, and he dove
to push his lover out of the way. The
curse hit him instead and he flew across the room to land near Harry, landing
funny on his arm with a loud crack and smacking his head on the bench. The room went black for a split second.
“Dad, are you all right?” Harry cried out.
“No,” James groaned and tried to get up. The second he put weight on his arm he hissed
and fell back down. “Big mistake,” he
whimpered.
Across the room Sirius was dueling with his cousin
Bellatrix. Sirius was doing well, but
got a little too cocky. Bellatrix hit him with a flash of red light,
and the wizard crumpled to the ground.
James threw his dagger with his left hand. It soared across the room and buried itself
deep in her shoulder. “Damn it, I
missed!” James growled.
Bellatrix retreated from the fight. Thinking his godfather was dead, Harry
suddenly became enraged and gave chase.
James squirmed around and managed to get to his feet and followed,
Lucius and Dumbledore not far behind.
Harry caught up with Bellatrix in the Atrium and hurled a
Cruciatus at her. She screamed and fell
to the floor, but seemed fine after a minute.
“Little baby Harry’s never tortured before has he?” she taunted. “You’ve got to mean it.”
“You mean like this?” James said as he strode out into the
open. “Crucio!” he shouted and her body started to writhe and contort on
the floor as an animalistic scream ripped from her throat.
“That’s a good girl, scream for me,” James grinned
evilly.
Harry’s eyes went wide when he saw flames start to dance
across Bellatrix’s skin like she was being burned alive from the inside
out. His hands flew to his ears when her
screams grew louder and higher pitched, shattering nearby glass. Then suddenly a spray of blood exploded from
her mouth and she was silent. Her mouth
was still wide open, but nothing was coming out.
“The perfect pitch,” James chuckled. “Never fails.”
“You two have been thorns in my side for far too long,” a
familiar voice echoed through the Atrium.
Voldemort emerged from the darkness, his wand drawn.
He pointed his wand at James and shouted, “Avada Kedavra!”
A golden bubble surrounded James just before the curse hit
him and the force of it sent him flying through the air. He bounced off the wall into the fountain,
hit the figure of the wizard, and then he flew high into the air and fell,
colliding with the hard ground with a loud thud. Harry waited for his dad to get back up, but
James didn’t move.
“It was foolish of you to come tonight Tom,” Dumbledore said
as he stepped forward. “The Aurors are
on their way.”
“And when they arrive I will be gone, and you will be dead,”
Voldemort said before casting the Killing Curse again. Suddenly the figures in the fountain sprang
to life. The wizard jumped in front of
Dumbledore to shield him, and shattered on impact when the curse hit it.
Lucius ran out of the lift and rushed over to kneel by
James’ limp form. He let out a deep sigh
of relief when he felt for a pulse and found one. He gently rolled James over onto his back and
cradled him. The blonde motioned for
Harry to come over by him, and he kept his wand out ready to protect the
younger wizard if need be.
The two of them watched as Voldemort and Dumbledore battled
each other. Harry’s eyes were wide with
awe. He’d only seen the Headmaster as a
kindly grandfather figure before, but he was a formidable opponent. He blocked everything the other wizard sent
at him and responded in kind.
James groaned and opened his eyes. He reached up with his good arm and stroked
Lucius’ hair, then gave Harry’s hand a reassuring squeeze.
As Dumbledore predicted, minutes later a few dozen Aurors
stepped out of the fireplaces along the walls accompanied by Fudge who was
still in his pajamas. Voldemort only
paused a moment to turn and look at them before grabbing Bellatrix and
fleeing.
“That was-” one of the Aurors began with fear in his voice.
“Voldemort,” James finished the sentence from his place on
the floor. “Yep, if we’re making all
this up, there are now at least a dozen of you who are as crazy as we are.”
“I don’t believe it!” Fudge cried, his face very pale.
“I’ve been trying to tell you for a year now,” Dumbledore
said in a very calm tone. “If you’ll
head down to the Death Chamber you’ll find a number of the escaped Death Eaters
unconscious and bound, and a handful of slain ones. I shall give you half an hour of my time to
explain what happened here tonight, as I’m sure you’d very much like to know,
but I wan to make sure my students and friends are taken care of first. Then you will reinstate me as Headmaster, and
you will no longer interfere at Hogwarts.
Send word to Dolores Umbridge that her presence is no longer required.
When James snorted Dumbledore sighed and shook his
head. “Never mind that last part then.”
“What happened to Dolores?” Fudge demanded.
“Don’t look at me,” James said innocently. “Before I arrived here I was with Severus
Snape and Sirius Black all afternoon.”
“And they weren’t at each others’ throats?” Lucius asked in
a disbelieving tone.
“Nope,” James shook his head. “They were civil with one another. I told you my stick method works.”
Lucius laughed and hugged James, being careful not to
squeeze too tightly.
“Did I miss something?” Fudged interrupted.
“Yeah,” James grinned.
“Lucius likes me better than you because I sleep with him.”
“There’s a little more to it than that,” Lucius sighed. “Though I do have to admit I’ve been
manipulating you on his behalf.”
“I knew something fishy was going on!” Fudge shouted.
“No you didn’t, moron,” James said as he rolled his eyes.
“Gentleman, that’s enough chit-chat,” Dumbledore
interrupted. “Lucius, would you kindly
take James back to the school and take him to the Hospital Wing.” He picked up a piece of broken statue and
tapped it with his wand. It glowed blue
for a second and he handed it to Harry.
“I want you to take this and go to my office. I’ll be there to talk to you in half an
hour.”
Harry nodded and disappeared. Lucius scooped James up in his arms and
headed to the Hospital Wing through the Floo.
A lot was going through his mind, including the fact that he’d just
turned on the other Death Eaters. There
was no going back now, but he’d decided he couldn’t keep up the façade
anymore.
The others started arriving one by one, and Madame Pomfrey,
who was still in her night clothes, was beside herself. She directed Lucius to put James in a bed and
she started assessing his injuries.
“Before you do anything, I should probably tell you I’m
pregnant,” James told her.
“You’re what?” Lucius asked, suddenly feeling a little
lightheaded.
“Pregnant,” James repeated.
“I should’ve told you sooner, but it didn’t seem like something one should
write in a letter.
Lucius was speechless.
“I… you… how…”
James bit his lip.
“I’m sorry Luci…. I took three
pregnancy tests after I stopped being in denial and all three came out
positive, so I’m sure. Yes, it’s yours;
I’m nearly eleven weeks along. And you
probably hate me now…” James sniffed and started to cry a little.
“No, I don’t hate you,” Lucius quickly assured him. “I’m a little angry with you right now, but
we both know that won’t last long. How
could you rush right into danger like that knowing you were pregnant? You could’ve been killed! You nearly were…”
James shrugged and wiped his eyes. “I don’t know… I heard Harry was in trouble and I reacted on
instinct. Running away from danger isn’t
in my nature, you know that.”
“Yes, well, you’d better change your nature then.”
“So you’re not mad about the baby?”
“No, of course not,” Lucius smiled softly and kissed James’
forehead. “This is certainly unexpected,
but it’s wonderful news.”
“What about your wife and the son you have already?”
“I’m allowed to have more than one child,” Lucius
chuckled. “And you let me worry about
Narcissa. You worry about taking care of
yourself and our baby.”
James smiled and relaxed a little. It was a relief to have his little secret out
in the open. It was even more of a
relief that Lucius wasn’t upset.
Madame Pomfrey finished her examination. “Lucky for you, your baby is perfectly fine
as far as I can tell. You’re fine too
except for a broken arm, sprained knee, and mild concussion. Since you’re pregnant the only potion I can
give you is a mild pain killer. The rest
I’ll have to mend with my wand, and you’ll need to take it easy for a while.”
James nodded and held still while the mediwitch did her best
to mend his arm and knee. His knee felt
much better, but his arm still throbbed a little. He downed the pale blue potion that was
handed to him, and it still hurt, but the pain was dulled.
Madame Pomfrey hurried off to tend to the others. Lucius pulled up a chair and sat beside
James’ bed. “So I’m really going to be a
father again?” Lucius said, trying to get used to the idea.
“Uh huh…” James nodded as he closed his eyes and tried to
relax.
Fortunately, no one else was seriously hurt. Madame Pomfrey was able to patch up
everyone’s cuts and bruises. Sirius and
Tonks had to be taken to St. Mungo’s, but the healers there were confident that
both would make a full recovery.
