Harry paced anxiously back and forth in front of Draco’s room. He had been given a private room in the hospital wing the minute Moony had carried him in. Madam Pomfrey had informed Dumbledore, who had in turn asked for Harry’s assistance in translating for Moony. Harry had yet to be allowed in to see his blonde friend but had been assured that he would live. Most of the blood that coated the tawny wolf currently guarding the room was from the bite on Draco’s shoulder. There had been no other wounds that Harry had been informed of. Seemed Greyback had enough of his mind to know he didn’t want Draco torn to shreds.
The blood that covered Moony’s mouth and paws belonged to Greyback who no longer was in one piece. Cobalt had done most of the damage by the time Moony had gotten there but Moony had arrived just in time to finish his old Sire off himself. Harry smelt no guilt coming from his Defense professor. The young vampire sighed using his wand to cast a Scourgify on the wolf. It didn’t get all of it, and Remus would need a shower once he was able to shift back, but at least he didn’t look like something out of a horror film. Moony nodded gratefully.
Cobalt had left Draco with Moony and had gone back to help Edge. The two had not yet returned and Harry was growing anxious. Ron and Hermione had joined him and were currently sitting close together on one of the many hospital beds. They looked to Madam Pomfrey as she stepped out of the room with Dumbledore.
“How is he?” Harry and his friends asked at the same time.
Madam Pomfrey sighed. “Like I said, he will live. Mr. Malfoy has asked to be left alone at the current time.”
“But…” Harry tried to argue but Dumbledore raised a hand to silence him.
“Mr. Malfoy has had quite the ordeal tonight and his life has forever been changed within a few moments.” Dumbledore looked over his spectacles at Harry and his friends. “Allow him time to process in private.”
Harry sighed but nodded. He could remember the first few nights after he had been changed. Vampires and werewolves weren’t the same but it was a huge transition.
Madam Pomfrey and Dumbledore left them to themselves. Moony stood and walked closer to Harry.
*The changes are not immediate. They happen over the course of a month.* He hung his head sadly. *It will be hard on him.*
“He will have us.” Harry said determinedly. “He won’t be alone.”
Ron and Hermione agreed.
*Catch him!*
Everyone looked alarmed toward the infirmary doors as they flew open. Harry had just enough time to register Cobalt skidding to a stop just in the door way before he had to grab Edge to keep him from barreling into Draco’s room. Moony and Cobalt had to jump in to help pin the fighting and struggling vampire to the ground.
“Let me go!” Edge snarled; his eyes bright gold and his teeth were bared in an open hiss. He was covered in blood and white dust. His clothes were torn from obvious bites and scratches. Dark pink lines ran down his face from tears that he was still crying. Edge looked like he had been put through Hell a few times and then a grinder for good measure.
“You can’t just barge in there.” Harry tried to reason with his Sire.
Edge snapped at his face. “He’s my dragon.” He struggled against them temporarily knocking Moony off balance as a foot kicked him harshly in the side of the face. Moony yelped backing off to the side shaking his head in obvious pain.
Harry felt anger at his Guardian being harmed but pushed
it down. Edge was in obvious distress and just trying to get to Draco but he didn’t appear to be in control of anything right now.
“Edge, look at yourself. You can see Draco but at least get cleaned up first.” Oh, how the tables had turned. Now it was Harry having to talk down his Sire from acting crazy in regards to his mate.
Edge growled deep and foreboding. He got an arm loose from Cobalt’s paws, grabbed Harry by the back of his neck, and tossed him to the side. A table and its contents crashed over Harry’s form. Hermione screamed holding back Ron who looked like he wanted to intervene. She pulled on Ron’s arm to get him to move with her.
“Know your place!” Edge roared now turning on Cobalt.
The dark wolf snarled when Edge locked his knees around Cobalt’s throat. Cobalt locked his haunches down and pulled back to prevent Edge from throwing him over. Edge swung an arm and knocked the wolfs front legs out from under him and tried to take the chance to dart away, but Cobalt latched his teeth into his calf. The heel of Edge’s hand was thrusted into Cobalt’s nose which cracked the sound echoing in the room. Cobalt howled jumping back and away from the raging vampire.
Edge had just got turned around when he got a face full of Moony and Harry. Moony head butted him knocking his back off his feet while Harry grabbed and pinned his arms tightly behind Edge’s back. Edge snarled and growled but Harry had his arms locked tightly. His Sire kicked out trying to get Moony but the tawny wolf lay fully down on his legs not allowing Edge any room or ability to move them. Edge roared in anger before breaking down in harsh sobs that rocked his entire body.
“Dragon!” He called out desperately. “I need to see my dragon. Please!”
“Edge, I’m here.”
Draco stood anchored between Ron and Hermione just in front of the door to his room. His face was so pale, eyes bloodshot, and a large bandage covered the upper half of his body covering the large werewolf bite underneath. He had been patched up and cleaned by Madam Pomfrey but still looked worn. Edge stilled, blinking wide eyes as he took in Draco’s form before he started struggling anew.
“Let him come.” Draco ordered softly.
Harry and Moony barely had time to shift before Edge flited to Draco. The vampire stood for a minute before slowly reaching a hand out to caress Draco’s face. His gold eyes bled back into blue even as more tears cascaded down his face.
“Dragon.” Edge whimpered.
“I’m okay, Edge, honest.” Draco whispered.
Edge wrapped his arms around Draco taking him fully away from Ron and Hermione who back off a couple steps. The pair slid to the floor where Draco held Edge close as he cried into the unharmed shoulder.
Harry watched the pair solemnly before turning to Cobalt and Moony. “You okay?”
Cobalt whined. *Yeah, I’m healing already, still hurts like a bitch though.*
*What happened?* Moony asked softly.
Cobalt shook his head. *Nothing good. He was ambushed I know that. There were dead werewolves all over, but there wasn’t a mark on them.*
Harry narrowed his eyes in confusion. “Then how did they die?”
*No idea but whatever happened left Edge in a state.* Cobalt said sadly pointing his nose toward Edge who was still holding onto Draco tightly.
Harry turned back around to the others. Ron and Hermione had sat back down on the bed they had been occupying previously watching them all with mixed expressions of sadness, worry and mild fear. Draco was rubbing a hand softly over Edge’s back and through his hair.
“Edge.” Draco whispered softly. “Why don’t you get cleaned up?” Edge tightened his hold. “Come on, we will still be here when you get done. You can cuddle with me during the day if you would like but you have to get clean.”
Edge stayed still a few more moments. Harry wasn’t sure if his Sire was actually going to move but eventually he did, standing slowly and helping Draco back to his feet as well. A hand hovered over Draco’s wounded shoulder but Draco grasp with his hand tightly.
“Not tonight.”
“Draco…”
Draco shook his head. “Maybe tomorrow. You need rest before you try. No arguments.”
Edge sighed. “I can’t take away the curse, I…”
“I know.” Draco stated. He stroked Edge’s face cleaning it of tears the best he could. “Go shower and change.”
Edge slowly nodded. He gave Draco one last sorrowful look over before flitting away. Draco swayed but was able to keep his feet; barely. Harry moved to him and walked with him back to the room staying close in case Draco needed his help. The blonde was able to manage himself climbing slowly back into bed with a groan and tired sigh.
“Stubborn vampire.” Draco fussed closing his eyes. “Trying to heal me when he’s already so bone tired.”
Harry chuckled softly. “Sounds about right. You want me to stay until he gets back?”
Draco shook his head. “No. I just want to sleep. He’s allowed to come in.”
Harry nodded, not saying anything, and left Draco to sleep. His heart felt heavy. Could vampires and werewolves even form mate bonds? Would Draco still be able to feed Edge if he wanted? It never seemed to be an option for him to feed from Remus but was it because he couldn’t or some other reason?
Edge had already returned when Harry shut Draco’s door behind him. Harry blinked at him.
“That was quick.”
Edge shrugged. “I might have flitted through one to get back quickly.” Edge still looked like crap but at least he was washed and clean. The shower had helped that much.
“What happened Edge?” Harry asked sitting next to his friends. Cobalt and Moony had curled up close by.
Edge moved to sit on the bed opposite them staring at the floor. “It was a trap, all of it.”
“A trap for Draco?” Asked Ron, only to be elbowed in the ribs by Hermione.
“No, for me.” Edge sighed running his hands through his hair gripping it tightly. “I ended up outnumbered and pinned, about to be staked, but…Dante saved me.”
Cobalt whined standing. *Edge…*
“They staked him instead.” Edge choked out.
Hermione gasped turning into Ron when he wrapped an arm around her. Harry bowed his head. When were they going to catch a break? First Severus and now Draco was bitten by a werewolf and Edge has lost Dante. Cobalt nosed Edge’s shoulder giving his face a small lick. Edge huffed a short laugh pushing the black wolf away.
“You need to brush, Cobalt.”
Cobalt snorted in his face. *You cracked my nose. Deal.*
Edge winced using both hands to scratch Cobalt’s ears. “I’m sorry.” He rested his head against the wolfs. “I had to see Draco for myself. I was just so afraid I had lost him too.” Edge looked at all of them with sorrow filled eyes. “I apologize for losing myself back there.”
Harry was the first to shake his head. “No need. We understand.” How many times had he lost it on Edge about Severus? Harry couldn’t blame Edge considering he had basically done the same.
Edge nodded barely able to manage a hint of a smile before standing. “The sun is rising. You should get some rest.”
They all agreed, everyone choosing to stay in the Infirmary for now, and started to move but a fox jumped up on the bed closest to the door. It sat daintily with its tail crossed over its front feet and head held high. Its markings were like nothing Harry had seen before.
Black fur covered its face tapering off into a bright red that went around its ears. Black fur covered the back of them. The black became saturated with white as it traveled along the animals back to its tail. The tail was black with just a small amount of white on the tip. Its legs and chest were coated in black fur while its sides and hips where the same bright red that made up its ears. A roll of parchment was tied around its neck.
Cobalt and Moony stood growling at the little fox but the only movement it made was to twist an ear backward as though in agitation. Edge froze narrowing his eyes at the creature. Ron and Hermione stared in awe.
“A cross fox.” Hermione breathed in awe.
Ron looked at her. “What’s that?”
“It’s a semi-rare melanistic variation of the red fox. I never thought I’d actually get to see one.” Hermione stared at the fox as though she wanted nothing more than to scoop it up and squeeze it.
The other ear twisted back.
Edge stepped around the bed to move closer to the fox signaling for Cobalt and Moony to stay put. They did but stayed tense and watched the fox with eagle intensity. The fox watched the vampire approach still sitting calmly as though it had not a worry in the world.
“Is that for me?” Edge asked.
The fox simply nodded before lifting its head to allow Edge to untie the parchment from around its neck. Edge unrolled it, read maybe two lines, before his eyes grew pained and he rolled it back up.
“Thank you.” Edge said simply before turning and walking away.
*The hell?* Cobalt questioned looking from Edge to the fox still sitting silently on the bed. *Who the fuck are you?*
The fox didn’t answer or even look at the black wolf. Its golden eyes stayed pinned on Harry. Harry felt his heart begin to race for a reason unknown to him. Two ears moved slowly forward. The fox then stood, shook, and jumped down to trot out of the room.
Harry stood, frozen, staring in the direction the fox had gone. He felt like he couldn’t breathe. Had he really seen what he thought he had? Without fully thinking, Harry dashed out of the room after it.
*Harry!* Cobalt and Moony went to follow but Edge called them back.
“Let him go. He is in no danger.” Edge said softly holding the parchment tight to his chest. He entered Draco’s room without looking at them.
The two wolves shifted trading confused looks with each other and with Ron and Hermione as well.
Behind the closed door, Edge leaned against it, a sad smile gracing his features and more tears tracked down his face, as he read the first few lines written again.
Edge,
Two things first:
One, Severus will be the one delivering this to you should the need arise.
Two, if he does deliver this, then my time has run out.

Harry chased the fox following it closely.
It had been standing at the end of the corridor when Harry had left the Infirmary. They had stared at one another before the fox darted off toward the stair well. Harry cursed and followed. The stairs had moved away from that particular landing so Harry had thought he had the little creature cornered but it had simply leaped through the air to land on the other landing with ease. Harry followed without hesitation. He had gotten close enough to make a grab twice but it had twisted just out of his reach both times much to Harry’s frustration. It had made a barking sound, almost like a laugh each time, before it would dart off again. The fox acted as though it was leading him somewhere and was not willing to be caught until they got there.
But Harry had had enough of its taunting and staying just out of reach. It always slowed when turning into different corridors as though to make sure Harry was following correctly, so when it turned down into the dungeons, instead of reaching to grab it, Harry dived around the corner to pin the fox with his body. It yelped, its tiny claws scratching against the stone floor as it struggled to escape Harry’s grasp. Harry kept his hands firmly clenched in its fur. If it wanted lose, it would have to leave fur behind.
Harry stood to his feet barely removing a hand from its reach when it tried to bite him. His other hand held it firmly by the back of its neck. The fox growled at him but ceased its struggle hanging limping in his grasp. Harry growled back at it the little bangle catching his eye again.
“Where did you get that?”
The fox stopped growling. *You gave it to me.* It replied softly. *Christmas, at Grimmauld.*
Harry felt his heart and breathing stop. That voice. No, it couldn’t be but he would know it anywhere; deep and rich it flowed over Harry like liquid heat.
The fox lifted a paw, the one with the bangle, and tapped Harry’s nose prompting him to breathe again. *Did you know it can’t be removed except by the one wearing it?*
Harry nodded shakily. “I had Edge put it on there so it couldn’t be stolen or lost.” Harry started trembling.
The fox twitched its ears and made a grumbling noise. *Put me down, Harry.*
Harry lowered the fox to the ground not daring to blink. The fox shook again, scratched where Harry had held him with a back foot, before turning further into the dungeons.
*Come.*
Harry followed numbly not taking his eyes off the fox for one second. It led him straight to Harry’s rooms and placed a tiny paw on the door. The door opened immediately. Harry swayed on his feet as the fox trotted in like it owned the place. Harry stood blinking dumbly not sure he was able to keep up with what was happening.
“Come in, Harry.” The deep voice called to him.
Harry closed his eyes tight, took one deep breath, before opening them and entering the rooms. He shut the door by leaning against it staring at Severus standing in front of him. The man looked unchanged, except maybe a bit paler than normal. The dark strands of hair still fell around his face but looked freshly washed and groomed. Instead of his teaching robes he wore a dark shirt with long sleeves and dark trousers and boots. That silver bangle had changed its size to still fit around his wrist. It glinted in the light, the emerald and onyx sparkled from their places in the snakes mouths.
Severus looked at him solemnly. He slowly reached out a hand. “You can scent me if that helps. Dante assured me my scent wouldn’t change too significantly.”
Scent? Change? Dante? Harry couldn’t make the sentence make any sense. Severus was standing in front of him. How? Edge had said he had looked. Cobalt had not been able to find anything. What was happening?
Harry stepped forward jerkily still not daring to blink in case the image disappeared. He kept his eyes locked on the dark ones silently watching him. They were sad, fearful, and yet patient. Harry ignored the hand held out for him, instead reaching out his own hand to touch the broad chest. Severus let his arm drop back to his side. His chest was cool to the touch, even through the shirt, and it rose with a single breath. A heart beat underneath slow and steady. Harry registered the exact slowness of the beat and how no human would be standing.
Harry leaned closer, still watching Severus’s eyes watch him, and breathed in the mans scent. Sandalwood coated his senses but instead of being warm it was filtered with a sweet coldness that Harry had come to associate with Edge’s scent as well as his own.
“Severus?” Harry breathed leaning back just slightly to look the man more full on. Severus watched him silently. “What did you do?”
Severus took an unneeded breath. “I transitioned.”
Harry blinked. He pulled back the hand resting on Severus’ chest and slammed it into him. Severus flew back into a book shelf before landing on the floor with a thump. Books fell and toppled over him one even hitting him on the head. Severus pushed them away shaking his head before glaring up at Harry across the room. Harry wore his own heated glare.
“What the hell was that for?” Severus growled standing to his feet.
“What did you do?!” Harry yelled tears falling rapidly from his eyes even in his anger.
“I told you…”
Harry flitted, grabbed Severus, and threw him over the couch. “Why would you do this?!”
Severus flipped over the couch hitting the floor again with a thump. He got to his hands and knees growling under his breath. “I did this for you.”
“For me?!”
Severus felt hands grab the back of his shirt. He used an arm to sweep Harry’s legs from under him causing Harry to land heavily on the floor.
“Yes for you, you impertinent brat.” Severus drawled getting to his feet standing over Harry.
Harry snarled using both feet to kick Severus in the stomach once again sending him back into the wall. The wall in question cracked and groaned in protest of the harsh treatment.
“I never asked this of you!” Harry yelled standing back to his feet. “I never wanted this!”
Severus stepped away from the wall. “It wasn’t your choice.”
Harry growled before charging at Severus. The old Potions professor grabbed Harry’s wrists and pinned him to the fireplace. The stone chipped in places but neither cared. Severus had planted his mouth firmly over Harry’s and was proceeding to snog the living daylights out of him. Harry struggle but only for a moment. A high pitched whine left him before he forcibly pulled his hands away from Severus’ grip to grab hold of him tightly burying his fingers in dark strands. Severus wrapped his arms tight around Harry’s waist pulling him flush to his body and away from the wall.
The kiss was all fang and tongue both of them losing themselves to base instincts. Harry stepped forward and Severus let himself be pushed back onto the sofa while Harry wasted no time climbing into his lap straddling his hips. Severus groaned into the kiss nipping at Harry’s bottom lip. Blood welled from the bite; Severus lapped it up before Harry could.
“I wondered what you would taste like.” Severus moaned holding Harry’s hips as the younger rocked against him.
Harry opened his eyes to look at Severus. Those dark eyes had bled into a bright gold that was still black around the edges. They glowed as Severus arched up underneath him. “And?”
Severus hummed. “Like autumn, crisp and a little chilly.”
Harry laughed. “Cold comes with the territory. Your scent has gone slightly chilly.”
Severus shrugged twisting Harry around to pin him against the sofa, Harry’s head resting pressed against the arm. “You smell mouthwatering.” Severus ground out leaning down to lick a line along Harry’s throat. “Haven’t smelled anything like you.”
Harry wrapped arms and legs around Severus tightly not willing to let him go anytime soon. “Same to you. I…I missed you.”
Severus smelt Harry’s tears before he heard the strangled whimper. He nuzzled Harry, shifting until he was pressed between Harry and the back of the sofa. “I know. I missed you too.” He ran his fingers through the messy locks of hair tickling his chin.
“What took you so long?”
“I had to transition for one. Took five weeks total.” Severus sighed. “Or at least that’s what Dante told me.”
Harry shook his head trying to mask a small sniffle. “I don’t understand. How did…”
“He left some of his blood for me. I started taking it the night Draco was called to see the Dark Lord.”
Harry pressed close. That explained why Severus had been so sick and why Harry always felt like something was off. “Did you know what was going to happen?”
“Not then.” Severus buried his nose in Harry’s hair. “I did when he called me back during the day. It was too strange of a time. I took an extra dose before leaving just in case. Good thing I did.”
“But why?” Harry grumbled into Severus’ chest.
“Silly brat.” Severus pulled back and used a hand to pull Harry’s face up to look at him. “Do I really have to say it?”
Harry eyed him. “Can you?” He remembered how hard Severus would hide his feelings.
Severus smiled a bit mischievously, but more Slytherin like and less fun mischief. “Oh, no Dark Lords are getting into my mind now. If anything, I’ll be getting into his. Another reason I didn’t return immediately. Dante wanted to train my mind.”
“Did he?” Harry asked.
“Yes, he did. I tried talking to you but not completely sure I got through.”
Harry’s eyes widened. “It was you!”
Severus looked shocked. “I actually reached you?”
“I thought I was going crazy.” Harry laughed shortly in disbelief. “I would have tried to answer but my mind abilities are honestly shit.”
Severus laughed. Harry stared in awe at him having never seen Severus laugh so carefree before. Just how powerful had his mind magic become that he felt this comfortable?
“I love you, Sev.” Harry stated not realizing he had even said it until Severus looked at him with a soft smile. A hand gently stroked his cheek as Severus leaned closer to him.
“I love you. Harry.” Severus whispered against his lips just before pressing their lips together.
