“Should we postpone the wedding?” Hermione whispered as she and Draco tiptoed to the ROR.
“No,” Draco said quietly. “Snape said that they would both be there.”
“You think he’ll tell Harry?”
“Tell me what?”
Hermione yelped and jumped into Draco’s arms. She hadn’t expected Harry to be hiding out under his cloak. Harry gave her a sheepish grin and ushered them in the ROR, still hidden behind glamours.
“Tell me what Hermione?” He asked again when the room closed.
“Nothing,” Hermione said quickly, looking around at the room. It looked as it had when they first entered weeks ago but she knew it could shift now. “Where is everyone?”
“Well, Dumbledore is still having a chat with Ron. He sent Fawkes with a message that they’d be along shortly. Ginny and Luna ran off somewhere, something about a proper wedding. They dragged Neville along to carry something, poor guy. And I’m here… waiting for the happy couple. You… you are happy aren’t you? This is… a bit sudden.”
“I am,” Hermione said. “I know it seems fast Harry but… just trust me.”
“I’m happy Potter,” Draco said quietly as he held Hermione close to him. “I’m going to have a family, a real one. You ought to know how I feel about family.”
Harry pursed his lips and nodded. “I suppose… but if you harm one hair on her head-“
“Save it Potter,” Draco sighed. “I wouldn’t dream of it. Now, let’s make this place fit for a wedding.”
He walked along, thinking of a wedding fit for a Malfoy and stopped himself. Hermione was better than any Malfoy. He wondered how muggles of her stature did this sort of thing. They’d need to have a magical bonding of course but perhaps they could combine the two. There wouldn’t be huge crowds to witness their exchange but she deserved the best.
Hermione almost cried when an exact replica of the chapel she’d attended as a child materialized. It was a tiny thing, wooden pews and a small white alter, but it was so beautiful. It was decorated in snow white flowers of every shape and size with ribbons and bows and netting and the works. On the alter, there were several hand fasting ribbons she’d recognized from her leisurely readings on wizarding wedding customs. There was also a blood binding cup, which made her insanely curious.
“Wow,” Harry said. “I thought the room was broken.”
“You just have to know how it works now,” Draco said smugly before he placed his hand on the wall and sent his thanks to the room for creating the perfect place.
The door swung open, admitting a squealing Ginny followed by Luna and a teetering Neville. He was buried in a mound of white fabric. Harry took pity on him and released him from some of his burden. Luna danced haphazardly around the room while Ginny yanked Hermione over to the side of the room.
“You and I are going to have a very long talk Hermione,” Ginny chided. “But if you’re going to have a wedding, we’re going to do it properly. It took some doing, but we commandeered you a dress and Malfoy some dress robes. Go get them on.”
“Where did you get them?” Hermione gasped as she raced back across the room and took her dress from Neville.
“They’re actually… well, the dress is mine. I sort of hit Bill up for the robes. I might have agreed to babysit any future children for the use of them.”
“Oh Ginny, you didn’t!”
“It’s my gift to you Hermione. Besides… you deserve to be happy. And if Malfoy is who makes you happy, then who am I to stand in the way?”
“You’re okay with this?”
Ginny grinned and leaned in closer. “Well, he’s a prat, but he’s a damn good looking one.”
Hermione burst out laughing and dragged her friend over to a corner that was obscured with a tri-fold divider so she could change. She was floating on air. Harry and Ginny were okay with this. Luna was okay with everything. Though Neville was shocked, she could hear him congratulating Draco. The only other thing she needed was Ron’s blessing. He was her first and her best friend. It seemed… wrong without him there. Her heart stopped when the doors opened again.
“It’s Ron,” Ginny whispered, holding on to Hermione’s shoulder in a show of support.
“Where’s Mione?” Ron asked quietly.
“In that corner,” Harry answered.
“Um… are you decent?” Ron called.
“Yes,” Hermione managed to squeak out.
Ron cleared his throat and stepped past the divider. His eyes widened in shock when he saw her in the dress. She did have to admit, it was quite lovely. It was a simple halter dress that came to the floor, embellished with lace and pearls. She felt a little bad wearing it but Ginny had insisted.
“Mione, you look… wow.”
She blushed. “Thanks Ron.”
Ron cleared his throat again, going red at his next words. “A-are you happy?”
Hermione nodded. “I will be Ron. He’s so much different than we thought he was.”
Ron nodded with a frown. “I don’t like him.”
She smiled. “You don’t have to like him Ron. I just… I don’t want to lose your friendship.”
Ron gave her a weak smile and pulled her in for a hug. “You’ll never lose that. And… I guess the wanker did save your life once.”
“Twice,” Draco said from the other side of the divider. “And Snape’s just arrived.”
Hermione almost knocked over the divider to see the vampire. She wanted to know if he had brought Venus with him. Draco chuckled and caught her arm as she stumbled past everyone. She breathed a sigh of relief to see Venus standing beside him. She looked beautiful in her deep green velvet dress. Hermione studied her against Harry. They looked so much alike, though Venus was almost as tall as Harry. They had the same eyes, Lily’s eyes.
“No tears before the wedding love,” Draco said quietly as he wiped at her eyes. She laughed nodded.
Snape strolled up, an odd look on his face before he cleared his throat. “I realize that there is no one to give you away Miss Granger and that is partially my fault. I wondered… if you would allow me to do so?”
Hermione’s breath caught in her throat. “I… oh goodness, I, you don’t have to do that sir.”
“I would like to,” he insisted quietly.
Hermione held back more tears and nodded. She couldn’t believe how much softer he was now. She wondered how much of his tough exterior was a wall to protect his family from Voldemort. While everyone took their places, she took the opportunity to speak with him.
“Sir… will you be telling Harry tonight?”
Snape nodded. “Venus is dying to meet him and there is no need to keep them apart any longer. I just… I’m not sure… how.”
Hermione nodded. “You might be surprised sir. Ever since he saw your memories, he’s had quite the different opinion of you. He took your words about me to heart. I wouldn’t be surprised if he listened to your side of the story intently.”
Snape turned to observe Harry, who had decided to stand in as Draco’s best man since he didn’t have one. He was in a rather candid conversation with Draco at the moment and it made his eyes sparkle. She saw a corner of Snape’s mouth twitch up into a smile.
“He really is nothing like James at all.”
“No sir,” she said softly. “He’s very much like his mother, though he does tend to act before thinking. I believe he would do you proud.”
Snape snapped his eyes back on her in shock. “I beg your pardon!”
Hermione smiled. “Don’t look so shocked sir. You and Venus are the closest thing he has to family now, since the Dursleys aren’t in his life anymore. Think of it as… something that should have happened long ago. I know you still think on it.”
Snape glared at her but there was no malic in it and she gazed serenely back. He scoffed and rolled his eyes in a very un-Snape-like fashion. “Fine. I’ll consider it.”
“Where is Naomi?” she asked quietly.
“Venus doesn’t know,” he said, his voice catching. “They were separated a few weeks ago.”
Hermione grabbed his arm and patted it. “She’ll come.”
Snape nodded and raised his head. They had a wedding to attend.
