His eyes widen in shock, he definitely didn’t see this coming. As he’s trying to think of what to say, she actually laughs a little, and says, “I know. It actually hit me the same way earlier, you don’t have to try to hide feeling like I’ve just dropped a ton of bricks on you. I felt like I had that same ton dropped on me earlier today too.” He can’t help but grin at the aptness of the analogy, and it breaks the tension; and he gestures for her to go on.
She smiles at him for a moment, and then the smile fades and she takes his hand again. She asks him to close his eyes, and he looks at her quizzically, and she says, “Just trust me, close your eyes.” He does, and she says, “Now…imagine me meeting and falling in love with someone, taking the twins and Albus off to my new life and leaving you and Teddy behind. Or imagine the reverse, you falling in love with someone, and taking Teddy with you to your new life. Imagine what effect that would have on the children, and what effect it would have on whichever one of us was the one left behind. Don’t say anything yet, just imagine it fully.” She can see him frowning as he does, as she waits a bit and then goes on.
“Now, instead imagine someone coming and telling you that I’ve been hurt and I’m in the hospital. Or that the twins or Albus have been, and for some reason I’m not immediately available. Don’t open your eyes or say anything yet, just imagine how you’re feeling when you get that news, and what your first reaction would be.”
She pauses for a bit, and then goes on, “Now, imagine getting to the hospital, I’m in critical condition – but they won’t let you see me, because technically – you’re not ‘family’. Decisions need to be made about my care, but they’re too tied up in trying to find someone who has the authority to make them, and time is ticking away. Meanwhile you’re right there, tearing your hair out because you know what I want or need better than anyone else possibly could, but you can’t do anything because – you aren’t family.”
Remus opens his eyes and looks at her, understanding dawning in his eyes like it did for her earlier. She looks at him and says, “Remus…we’ve become a family, without either of us even noticing it was happening. I think we’ve even fallen at least somewhat in love with each other, to the capacity that we’re able to as you said to me before, without either of us really noticing.”
“The ton of bricks that hit me earlier was the thought that I cannot imagine trying to do this without you, now – raise the children, live my life. I cannot imagine having not having you and Teddy here. I cannot imagine having anyone else to laugh with, and weep with, as I have with you. And equally, I cannot imagine not having someone to laugh and weep with, as I have with you.”
He is watching her very seriously by this point, and she continues, “I cannot imagine trying to explain my heart and my head to someone who hadn’t gone through all that themselves, right along with me, who hadn’t already been traveling down that river in that same boat with me, as you have been. It is extremely unlikely that I’d ever find anyone else who would ever understand, and even more unlikely that I’d ever want to; even without the toll it would take on you or the children. Remus, plain and simple – I cannot, now, imagine a life without you and Teddy in it. I don’t want to imagine it.”
Tears begin to fill Remus’s eyes at the last, and still he just looks at her, still trying to sort through it in his mind and not wanting to say anything too quickly. She caresses his face and smiles, saying, “You don’t need to say anything right now. I’ve had all day to start digging myself out from under this particular load of bricks, without having to talk about it in the process. And I know that there are others we should talk to as well, we aren’t the only ones affected by it. I don’t think we need to ask the children, in fact I suspect we’d basically get a ‘well, duh’ response from them…” (Remus can’t help but chuckle at this, knowing it’s true) “…but I’m sure you’d also want to talk it over with Ted and Andromeda, for example.”
He nods, and smiles at her; gratified that she is still completely sensitive to his love for Tonks, which also naturally extends to her parents. And at the same time filing away in his own mind that just as she’s claimed about him, she also is about the only person who would automatically, and always, be sensitive to that; and also would not be hurt in any way by it because she does understand it so well.
Still not saying anything, he pulls her to him and just holds her, caressing her hair, and she relaxes against him. She knows it’s a lot to come to terms with, but she’s pretty certain he’ll come to the same conclusion that she has; that it’s already a fact anyway, they’re already a family in truth whether they are on paper or not.
Finally she gets up, and tells him that it’s probably best that they don’t sleep together tonight, she doesn’t want to muddy the waters for him. She grins impishly and adds that old man that he is, he probably still needs a bit of time to recover anyway. He laughs out loud at that (and momentarily gives her a look that says he’ll show her as well, and she grins) and gets up, giving her a hug; and then caresses her face with tenderness in his eyes before he goes up to his room.
