Sitting in the Great Hall at breakfast, Harry was in a deep conversation with Ginny about their Runes project with Hermione listening in and offering advice. So far they didn't have a project but had narrowed down their choices on what to do. That helped. As there was now only a couple to chose from, he was sure they would come up with something in the week then could start working on it. He liked that.
Once that topic was exhausted, they were talking about the new History teacher. It was a being that none of them had heard of, other than Harry; Lennox Crockett. He had already completely junked everything Binns had been teaching and was starting over with the true history of their world. Some of what had already been said in that class had set many in the school on their ear because it showed that Light and Dark were supposed to co-exist. Then there was the fact that Merlin was considered a Dark wizard because of what he descended from. There had, of course, been many protests of that in Gryffindor and people swearing it wasn't true, but the proof was there. To Harry, that meant that he and Tom's plans were working perfectly.
While talking about some of what had been said, the post owls arrived. As he usually didn't get anything, Harry was startled to see an unfamiliar owl land in front of him. Assuming it was from his new solicitor about the upcoming meeting at the castle, he took the letter. After feeding a tidbit of bacon to the bird and allowing it to drink from his cup, the creature took flight and was gone. Opening the letter, he was surprised to see that it was from Remus. Glancing at it, he saw it was nothing but the normal generalities, like asking about his grades. However, as he read through it, he realized the short missive was actually transfigured. To him, that meant there was something the werewolf had to say he didn't want anyone else to see. Figuring that it was now prudent to not look it over at the table or try to figure out the spell on it, he tucked it into his pocket then went on with his conversation, dismissing it as just the werewolf checking up on him. Hermione and Ginny wouldn't think anything of it because of who it was. Later on, when he had some time alone, he would read what was really there.
During his first break of the day, Harry made his way to the Room of Requirement. Once in there and ensuring no one could join him, he sat down on one of the chairs that were there then pulled the letter from Remus out. Frowning at it, he worked on it for a couple minutes before the short letter finally revealed the massive parchment it truly was. Eyes wide, he was startled by just how big it was. Skimming it lightly, brow furrowed, he realized that this was something that was going to take time to get through.
Nodding to himself, he set an alarm to make certain he wasn’t going to be late for his next class then began to read.
By the time he finished the massive letter, Harry was grinning, pleased. Remus was seeing the light! Not only that, he was backing away from Dumbledore. No, he didn't think the werewolf would come to their side of things, but he was certain that he was going to stay with the werewolf pack, something that would be good for him. That Harry liked. Of all the things he didn't want in the world, facing off against his father's old friends was high on the list. If they were out of the war, that was fine with him. He would, of course, be honest with them about what was going on when it came to his end of the whole mess, but he didn't want to fight them over it. And he didn't want them hurt either. Staying with Dumbledore and siding with the old man would end up with them having that happen. Not only that, they would end up used then tossed aside or thrown to the wolves, so to speak. No, he didn't like that idea. As long as they were out, he was fine with the situation.
Casting a Tempus, he nodded when he saw the time. It was close to the time for his next class so he should be going. Gathering his things, he stood then walked out of the room, making a mental note to ensure that he got with Sirius that night so that his godfather knew Remus was worried about him. He was sure that Sirius had a way to get a hold of his old friend to let him know he was fine. If not, he would see what Sirius wanted him to say to Remus so that the werewolf didn't worry about him.
During a lull in the day when he had time in between things he had to do and Harry was busy with something he had him attending to, Tom decided to check on Black. No, there was no love there for the man because of the water under the bridge from the first war, but he was trying to make nice for Harry's sake. After all, his young lover had changed a great deal for him, dealing with things that made him uncomfortable because it was what he wanted, so he saw doing something such as this the same way. Nor did he want all out war between the two of them. That was a position he didn't want Harry put in. So, he was going to try to make something of a peace offering.
Knocking on the door, he waited. When a wary Black answered, he said, “May I step inside? I have something I wish to discuss with you.”
Though uneasy about having Voldemort in his house, Sirius nodded then stepped aside. Once the Dark Lord was inside, he shut the door then asked, “Something wrong? Where is Harry?”
Once inside and the door firmly shut, Tom let the glamour slide off. Facing the man, he said, “Nothing's wrong. I just have a proposal for you is all. Call it something to stave off the boredom without doing something to really aid our cause.”
Nodding, Sirius felt slightly better now that the snake-like glamour was gone. Gesturing into the living room, he sent an elf for tea then flopped onto the sofa. “What kind of proposal?” He asked, wary. He wasn't sure if he was bored enough that he was willing to do anything for Voldemort but he would listen at least.
Taking a cup of tea when it was brought, Tom sipped it then leaned back. Launching in, he said, “I know you are probably already at the end of what you've found to do and boredom is creeping in so what I thought of is this-- I have a group of Death Eaters we're working with to train. It's not really anything that is meant to go into battle with, no, more like take abysmal skills up to a level of at least somewhat competent. They are a joke, to put it bluntly.” Lips quirking, he added, hoping to lighten the mood, “And Wormtail is among them. That should tell you the skill level I'm talking about here.”
Giving a snort, unable to help himself, he then grinned, “Yeah, I get the level.” Sobering up, he looked at Voldemort and asked, “What does this have to do with me?”
“To put it bluntly, you were an Auror. You were also very good at it. I doubt those skills have rusted with being on the run. In fact, they've probably been honed quite well. My proposal is for you to help work with the inept fools. Your godson and I are always there so there is no foolishness. Barty, too, is going to help. He is a very good instructor. However, you could assist as well. I'll ensure Wormtail stays away from you. He knows not to cross Harry or myself and will stay away if he knows what's prudent. It won't be much, of course, as I hold no real hope for most of those in that group becoming better than rotten, but it will give you something to do. I know, as does your godson, that boredom is going to be a factor here. It's also obvious, with what I know of you, that something like research isn't an area you would do well in. That would be something we could use you for and it doesn't relate to what we are doing. However, with what I know of you, it's not your cup of tea, so to speak.”
Nodding, taking that in, Sirius said nothing, looking down as he thought it over.
“You don't have to give me an answer today, Black. I understand such a thing will take time to contemplate. However, it will give you something to do. It'll also allow you to spend time with your godson though you will have to call him Evan, as we've told you.” Shifting around, Tom said, quietly, “Though I don't think Harry realized it when you sent him his birthday gift, I'm aware you knew I would see the address for the Order's headquarters.” Stopping, he waited for the reaction to that.
Looking up, Sirius locked eyes with the man then said, bluntly, “I knew. It wasn't to help you, I’m sure you know that, but I knew. I realized Harry was serious about you and would tell you anyway. It doesn't mean I'm sympathetic to your cause. All it meant was that I was backing away from Dumbledore, nothing more.”
“You don't like how Albus is using or treating your godson,” Tom said plainly.
“No, I don't. I don't like some of what Harry has become now, you realize that I'm sure. It's a damned sight better than what that old man is doing, though. Harry--” trailing off, Sirius looked down again then continued, “adores you. He says you feel the same way. I haven't seen much interaction between the two of you but I will take his word for what he's said about it. He's been dead on with so much else that I will bet he is there as well.”
“There is also your 'gift' to him on his birthday. He wasn’t pleased with that, I’m sure you know, but it was used and proved it,” Tom told him.
Nodding, Sirius said nothing but looked at the Dark Lord.
“It is as he says, Black,” Tom told him straight up. “You find it odd, this I know, but it is that way. In time, you'll see more of it. I admit that it is peculiar or not what I would have done in the past, but things and situations change. In this case, that has happened. My followers know Harry is my consort. I'm certain you know the meaning behind that.”
Nodding slowly, Sirius leaned back then said, “I know what it means, yes. You never, from what I know, had one before. In the first war there was no one. Before that I don't know but I haven't heard anything like it from Albus.”
“There was no one.” Tom told him bluntly. “There never was. Even in school there was no one I allowed close. Harry is the first. That should put your mind at ease.” Stopping for moment, he then said, distractedly, “I'm also certain that you realize the only reason I'm even saying anything is your godson. I don't want to put him into the position where he has to maintain the peace between the two of us. Our lives, especially his, are complicated enough at the moment that we don't need a conflict between you and me to make it worse.”
“Understood,” Sirius told him with a nod. “Look, I'm going to be real honest here. I don't want any part of Dumbledore anymore. Nor do I want any part of your side. The only being whose 'side' I'm on his Harry's. That's it. I'm here because I had no other out at the time and because Harry worries about me. He has enough on his plate that worrying about me isn't something he needs.”
“This I understand,” Tom said with a nod. Thinking that over a moment, he said, tone thoughtful, “There may be something else I can come up with for you to do. You won't be aiding either side, only your godson.”
“What's that? If it's to help Harry, I'm willing to do that,” Sirius told him.
“No one, other than Albus, is going to be foolish enough to take me on in a fight or try an assassination. We all know that. Not only that, I have 'Evan' with me at all times to watch my back. With what is going on and what that old man knows, Evan now has a target painted on his back. It's my understanding that the DMLE is now looking into finding Evan Harris to see what he may know. Also, there are some of my followers, despite the power that Evan shows, who are less than pleased with him. As is always the case in positions of power, there are ones that want to topple those above them to gain favor. I tend to quell such foolishness before it starts but there is always someone willing to try. In this case, I'm certain a few think they can manage to take Evan on and win then will try to do so. The proposal is this; he needs a bodyguard. Though there are problems between you and me, I trust you with your godson's welfare and know you would protect him. It would mean, of course, you have to be seen by my Death Eaters and your name will be out there, but you would be able to look out for your godson's welfare and protect him just as you promised.”
Scratching his goatee, Sirius looked down, thinking that over. Really, it did sound like a good idea to him. He also liked it. Yes, he was sure that Voldemort was more than capable of protecting his godson at most times. When it came to certain areas, though, help would be needed. After all, you couldn't keep an eye on everyone when the room was packed with bodies. Yes, he did like it but was reluctant because of the Death Eater angle.
“This won't be all the time,” Tom pressed on. “Just at meetings, training sessions and the like. I will make it clear that you are not a Death Eater, ensuring you have a mask of a different color to wear that makes it clear you aren't, if you wish to wear one, and that you are there for Evan, nothing more. It was him that recruited you. You will also only answer to him unless there is a serious problem, such as a battle situation, where I need you to do something to keep him safe. Other than that, I don't expect you to answer to me nor will I give you orders.”
Nodding, Sirius said, “Alright, I do like that idea but there is one spanner tossed in. Dumbledore is going to find out then everyone is going to be after my head.”
Smirking, Tom gave a snort then said, waving a dismissive hand, “I'm well aware of his spy, Black. Severus is firmly in my camp.”
Looking up, he said, sighing, “Why am I not surprised.”
“It's not as you expect on that matter,” Tom told him firmly. “I won't give you the details on it, but it's not something to concern yourself with.”
Though curious, Sirius decided that asking for details, something that probably wouldn't be given anyway, were things he didn't need to know. Instead, he said, “Give me until tomorrow to think it over and talk to Harry about it. I like the idea, but want to get with him and ponder it overnight. Then I'll give you an answer.”
“That's fine,” Tom nodded. He was pleased with that. At least it wasn't an outright no. Plus, Harry would like it. Standing, Tom said, “I will take your leave now. There are things to do. As Harry told you, you are welcome to come into the main house to find something to entertain yourself or if you need anything. The elves are at your disposal as well.” Seeing the man nod, Tom then made the same gesture. Letting the glamour slip back on, he then left to go get ready for the meeting that was coming up.
Sitting up on the Astronomy tower about an hour before prefect rounds, Draco and Harry were smoking as normal. They had been meeting up earlier now to give Harry time away from the tower to give him a break. Besides, the two of them liked talking. They had decided that, though there were issues in the past, they got along now, sharing a great deal of mutual interests, so they were going to let it grow. It worked for both of them.
Talking over what Harry knew of Hermione and her link to a pureblood line, Draco, tossing his cigarette aside said, “I was wondering where she descended from. She's too powerful for her to come from a more obscure line. It makes sense now, especially with what you said about her being good at the more Dark spells.”
“I thought so too,” Harry nodded. “Works out well, if you ask me. I mean, no offense, but if she was descended from the Malfoy line, she would be leery of talking to you about it. She knows the girl and likes her so she's willing to let herself get close.”
“Very true!” Draco said with a grin, leaning back. “Same with some of the others in Slytherin. She's too leery of us to want to talk. That works out well and she'll learn what she needs. After all, the Ravenclaws are more apt to explain it to her in a way she'll understand and it'll be logical.”
“That's my hope,” Harry said, chucking his own butt aside. Leaning back, he crossed his legs and sighed. “It's one faction working the way I want them to. There are just so many others that I still have to deal with on top of whatever Dumbledore is cooking up.”
“That reminds me,” Draco said, looking at Potter. “Fill me in on that mess.” Stopping, he grinned then said, “And I want a copy of that bloody map!”
Laughing, Harry snorted, “Not sure if it'll let me copy it, to be honest. I'll try, though. I think you having one will be an assist. And if I need you to share it with someone, you can. Well, as long as you promise not to make more or pass it around.”
“Like always, I won't,” Draco said. “Now, what's up with that vision or whatever it was.”
“It was a vision alright, but it was fake,” Harry told him, tone distracted. Then he quickly laid out what happened. After he was done, he said, “We know what it is now, we just don't know the why behind it. We rather suspect it's the old goats way of trying to toss us together again but can't be sure of that.”
“Rotten arsed old man just needs to drop dead,” Draco spat, shaking his head. “Would make a whole lot of our lives much easier if he did.”
“No argument from me there,” Harry snorted. “I don't think he's going to go that easily though. No, manipulative arseholes like him tend to hang on for a while to see how badly they can muck up your life. His time is coming though, no doubt there. If the curse doesn't get him, we're going to.”
“Oh, I want to see that,” Draco grinned. “Payback is a right bitch and getting to watch it is always fun.”
“I'll see what I can do but no promises there,” was the response from a chuckling Harry. “It's coming, no doubt, just when I don't know. There are a lot of balls in the air right now and things that have to be put into play yet before we deal with him.”
“Yeah, I know. Still, something to look forward to,” Draco grinned.
“There is that,” Harry laughed.
Looking at his friend, Draco shook his head then said, “I don't know how you do it, Harry. I mean, I'm busy enough with all we're getting chucked at us when it comes to school work. There's also what I have to do with the club and that. You-- shite, it's got to be exhausting! How do you manage.”
With a shrug, Harry said, “I just do. Used to it by now, I guess. It helps to have a goal you believe in to manage. Tom helps. I mean, he does his share so it's not like all of its dumped on my shoulders. Besides, I'm young. I have energy. Though I do admit there are days I’m so tired I don't want to get out of bed and that I want to dump a whole lot of the shite that I'm just not interested in anymore. Can't do that, though, it'd raise suspicions if I did.” Stopping, he said, “Though I have to admit I’m looking forward to Yule break! Less to worry about then and I can relax a little. Not so much jumping back and forth to do!”
Snorting, unable to help himself, Draco grinned, “Yeah, it's called a break for a reason, Potter!”
Laughing, Harry said, “Well, yeah, it is. It'll be the first year I don't stay here either. Nor do I have to go to my loving home. It'll be great.”
Sobering up a little, Draco said, voice softer than normal, “I guess I didn't think about it that way.”
“Nothing to worry about,” Harry said with a shrug then went quiet.
Looking at Harry, Draco wasn't sure what to say. He had made mistakes when he was younger, he would admit that to himself. Now, well, he could also admit that he liked things the way they were. Trying to lighten the mood, he said, grinning a little again, “Tell the Dark Lord he needs to hurry up and win this thing so you and I can show we're friends. This sneaking around to meet up is rather bothersome!”
Snorting again, Harry looked at him, grinning, “Somehow I don't think he's going to move his plans any faster just so we don't have to hide. Besides, think of the fun it could be if those in the castle think you and I are sneaking off somewhere together for something illicit. The looks would be worth it, Malfoy!”
Unable to help himself, Draco laughed, shaking his head, “Oh, bloody hell, that would be rich! It would be worth it! My house alone would have heart attacks, let alone the girls that would want to watch!”
“And Gryffindor would be any better?” Harry chuckled.
“Well, there is that!” Draco said, continuing to chuckle. “Shite, if it wouldn't throw a spanner into things, I would say we do it just to tweak the perverts and get a good laugh.”
Shaking his head, Harry just lit another cigarette and took a drag but continued to grin. Oh, that was a wicked thought and could be fun but it just wasn't feasible. It didn't mean he didn't like it though!
Please review!
Additional AN; As I've heard this a couple times, I'm going to say that I know there isn't a lot of suspense and action right now. I'm getting there, I promise. I had to do some foundation laying to play something out the way I want it. That's been done so I am now headed there. Two very small parts in the last several chapters were laid down that's leading to something big. No, I'm not telling you what and since no one but me is privy to my notes, you won't guess. :P So, yes, something big is coming, other than what is certain and been mentioned. And I do promise more Tom/Harry sex when the scene lends to the story.
