Draco and Hermione skidded to a stop at the edge of the circle the family was formed in. They were shaking with cold fury, feeling very much betrayed. How dare the Gods make them their little playthings when they had been manipulating the system the whole time. What was the point?
“Not good news then,” Melody sighed as she pulled Harmony to the middle of the circle with her.
“Decidedly not,” Harmony said with a frown. “It’s much worse than we thought.”
“You bet your arse it is,” Draco growled, unable to stop shaking.
“Well, let’s do this then,” Melody said, all too eager to confront the Fates again.
Their summons was answered quickly, but the family was shocked that they had another guest. She wore a long robe, her white hair blending into the material. She looked scared and that was a bit unnerving. There had never been a frightened Goddess before.
“Before you start,” Nemesis said, holding her hand up to stave off a vicious tongue lashing from Melody. “We believe we have discovered the reason you called us.”
“No fucking shit we have,” Draco spat. “Seriously? You want us to battle with fucking HADES?”
Nemesis frowned. “No pure couple, we did not. We had no idea that Hades had broken the commandment Zeus gave… until now.”
“Oh Persephone,” Harmony sighed. “What made you decide to do it?”
The white haired Goddess gave a sad smile. “I am not exactly fond of my husband. I have been waiting eons to catch him at something that will secure my complete freedom.”
“So when Hades struck the bargain with Moira, it didn’t occur to you to stop it?” Draco asked.
Persephone gave a very unladylike snort. “Of course it did. I am the one who cursed the woman’s line to begin with. Generations ago, her family angered the Gods by going against a deal. Each offspring would pledge their service to make reparations, and in return, the Gods would let them keep their magic. Moira’s father refused, thinking he was too powerful for the Gods. When they did not retaliate against him, he became cocky. That was when I took Moira’s magic.”
“And when did Hades decide to undermine you?” Hermione asked, her mind clicking things into place.
“When Moira learned of the previous deal, she agreed to pledge herself. However, Hades can’t undo my ruling. Instead, he gave her the amulet you have seen her wield. What she does not know is that it is also cursed. She will give her soul to Hades at the end of her life.”
“But why the experiments?” Hermione asked.
Persephone sighed heavily. “Hades has grown angry with his lot in life. He wishes to wage war on Olympus. There are not enough Gods to tip the scales in his favor. Each side is perfectly balanced.”
“We can’t make a dent in a fucking God,” Draco growled. “The Fates over there could snap our strings whenever they see fit.”
Persephone nodded. “And they have… at my behest.”
Melody gasped loudly. “You ordered the other pure couples destroyed!”
Persephone nodded again. “They were tainted by Hades’ influence.”
“But what does this have to do with us?” Draco asked.
“Long ago,” Nemesis said, “the Gods manifested on earth, fueled by the beliefs of mortals. They relied on the balance of good and evil as well as the devotion of their followers to live. We have become legends and fables, and therefore have receded from earth. We still depend on the balance of good and evil to exist in some form. We are tied to it. If it were unbalanced, especially by a worshiper, it would be all too easy for a God to descend to the earth to rule it. Whoever rules earth, rules our realm.”
“Where does Zeus fit into this?” Draco asked. “I thought he was the bloody ruler.”
“He is,” Persephone said quietly. “But he is equal to Hades and Poseidon. He only won it in a draw. For the moment, Poseidon is unaware of Hades plans. However, he is greedy. If he learns of Hades plans, he will join, if only to overthrow Zeus.”
“Isn’t Poseidon more powerful than Hades?” Harmony asked.
“He is,” Persephone said. “But if this war spreads, there will be many deaths. Hades strength is fueled by the dead. If those dead are pure… well, you can imagine his power. He will be able to overthrow Poseidon. He is cruel and ruthless. It will become your definition of hell on earth.”
“What was the commandment Zeus gave?” Hermione asked.
“We are to never mettle in the affairs of humans when it tips the balance.”
Draco snorted. “Creating a blood rite with Moira certainly violates that.”
“So what do you propose we do?” Melody sneered. “We can’t fight your fucking war for you.”
“No,” Nemesis said, “and we aren’t asking you to fight it. We are asking you to end the threat on earth.”
“We can’t end it if Hades and his cronies are backing them,” Rhapsody yelled out. She couldn’t stand it anymore. “Hades isn’t acting along. Moira was trying to impress Allecto, Tisiphone, and Megaera with the last battle. I doubt they did it but it leaves to question, who else.”
Melody snorted. “Our bets are on Chaos, Eris, and Ares.”
“You would be correct,” Persephone said sadly. “It spread much more quickly than I imagined it would. Your recent victory has sent much discord through the ranks, but they are gearing up again. You must end this as quickly as possible.”
“And the rest of it?” Melody asked sharply.
Nemesis motions to the Fates who had been extremely silent on the subject and Fortuna who remained stoic. “We will request council with Zeus. With Persephone’s information and the memories you have gathered, he will have to grant us an audience. I believe he will act immediately. This is not the first time Hades has tried to take over the earth, but it is the first time he has ever created a pact with a human.”
“Where is the Master?” Draco growled. “I’ll take her out right now.”
“She is cloaked by Hades,” Persephone said softly. “But I will be forced to join him soon. I will try to find it for you.”
“If you are stuck in the bleeding underworld, how in the fuck will you get the message to us?”
Persephone gave him a coy smile. “Hermes still has a soft spot for me.”
Nemesis laughed. “I will return when I have the message.”
“What if it is too late by then?” Draco asked.
“We will not let it be,” Fortuna said as fire sparked in her eyes. “You shall have all the good fortune you need. Use it well. Train your children.”
With that declaration, the Goddesses popped out, leaving a stunned family behind.

“Again!” Aiden yelled, encouraging Zandra to kick higher.
“This is pointless,” she snapped, trying and failing yet again to hit the ball he was levitating in the air. “I’m not that bloody flexible… or athletic for that matter.”
“Bollocks,” Aiden said flatly. “You just don’t want to.”
“I want to,” Zandra said, her voice wavering. “I just can’t.”
“Crying won’t solve anything,” Aiden said darkly. “And believing you can’t will only paralyze you. Stop living in the past. You aren’t the girl you once were.”
“How do you bloody know that?” Zandra screeched. “You wouldn’t look twice at me then and you certainly won’t touch me now.”
Aiden’s jaw dropped open in shock. “Is that what this is about?”
“No! Yes! Oh, I don’t bloody well know, but you won’t even fucking kiss me!”
Aiden cleared his throat uncomfortably. “It isn’t because I don’t want to.”
“Then why?”
He sighed and closed his eyes. “I’m not sure you are ready for it.”
“WHAT?” Zandra’s eyes blazed bright yellow and she bared her teeth.
Aiden started backing up, aware he was provoking her, and welcoming it. It was better if she was angry. “You aren’t over your abduction yet and I certainly don’t think hopping into bed with me would be the answer to that. You aren’t ready.”
“How. Do. You. Know. That?” Zandra hissed.
“Because you still think you can’t.” Aiden gestured to the ball. “And until you know you can, I’m not going any further than a comforting hug.”
“You complete arse,” Zandra seethed and reared back, executing a perfect roundhouse kick and knocking the ball across the pasture.
The shocked look on her face was priceless. Aiden couldn’t help himself. He pounced, cradling her head as he placed a fiery kiss on her opened lips. It was… heaven. That was the only way he could describe it. His time with Rhapsody was enjoyable, but this… this was beyond. He felt whole for once in his life. He didn’t have to worry about her crying out in pain from a vision. He didn’t have to worry about hurting her frail body. She was almost as strong as he was and just as fiery without the smart mouth. She was brutally honest, wickedly brilliant, and absolutely beautiful.
“Oh my Goddess,” Zandra breathed when he pulled back.
Her eyes were glowing amber in reaction to the kiss. She’d never experienced that. Never. It felt like everything clicked in place. She could do anything she wanted so long as Aiden stood beside her. He tasted like her favorite desert and she shivered. She didn’t think she’d ever get enough of him. She wanted more… so much more.
“Ah, ah,” Aiden stopped her when she went to kiss him again. “Do it again.”
“What?” She asked, her mind still clouded with the kiss.
“Kick it again,” he clarified, summoning the ball back to him. “I think we’ve just found your motivation.”
Zandra smiled slyly. “You’ll kiss me again if I kick it?”
Aiden nodded, unable to say anything else. She was radiating something that made his trousers tighten uncomfortably. He wasn’t sure if he could hold back much longer. In fact, he almost considered lowering the ball just so he could kiss her again. But no. That would do her no justice and he would be damned if she entered into battle without being completely compared.
“Well that was enjoyable,” Rhapsody chuckled as she watched Zandra kick the ball again and tackle Aiden to the ground.
Deven cocked his head. “They might want to find a room.”
Rhapsody snickered. “No, he’s got the patience of a monk and the will of his father. He’ll wrestle himself away when it gets too intense.”
Deven sighed. “Firsthand experience?”
Rhapsody winced. “Let’s not bring it up. Besides, I’m sure you have a history.”
Deven cleared his throat. “Right. So what will we be learning today oh wise and noble teacher?”
Rhapsody laughed. “Way to change the subject. Anyway, we’ll be working on sharing magic today. Did Melody explain phenoms to you?”
“Why are you asking?” Deven asked in amusement.
Rhapsody huffed. “Because if it involves you, I can’t bloody well see it.”
Deven smirked. “Well, well, little miss know-it-all doesn’t know everything.”
“Watch it vampire. I know where you sleep.”
“I would be worried if you didn’t, since it’s the same place you do.”
“You really want me to smother you with a pillow, don’t you.”
Deven shook his head. “I’d rather be alive to gaze upon your beauty.”
“Quit sucking up and tell me if she explained it already,” Rhapsody snapped.
“Easy, I was only joking. Anyway, yes, she explained it. I’m off balance… but I’m pretty sure I already knew that.”
Rhapsody rolled her eyes. “Let’s just get this started.”
“Shouldn’t the others join us?” Deven asked. “I mean, there are more than just us, aren’t there?”
“They are coming right now. Which is why I want to start.”
“Oh, you want them to feel bad for being late.”
“Shut it.”
Deven’s chuckles turned into guffaws when the twins came strolling up giving Rhapsody dirty looks. They didn’t appreciate Rhapsody making their mates feel bad. They had been through enough as it was. However, it had been a blessing in disguise. Being the strong shoulder to lean on wasn’t all bad. It let them get much closer to their mates than they ever thought possible. They still weren’t sure why they got the mermaid and the fairy, but they weren’t complaining.
Scorpius shook his head as he watched the phenoms work on sharing magic. He wished so badly to do that. Then again, maybe it wouldn’t be such a good idea. He held Lizzy close to him as she shivered again. It had been a week and she was still fighting her infection. Since they’d been able to let all their magic out at the ranch, she’d healed in spades, but it was still difficult. The buildup was still ripping her open. What did the Gods mean, giving them all this power? He could understand his mum and dad, but at least they could bond and balance themselves. He felt on edge all the time. It was worse now that Melody had taken their bands from them.
“This sucks,” Ara sniffed, watching as Deven dipped Rhapsody for a kiss after a successful shield.
“What,” Colton sniffed. “You want the vampire to kiss you instead.”
“Number one,” Ara growled. “He isn’t a vampire, not a full one. Number two, no. I was referring to the magic thing. I want my bloody bracelet back. I feel like I’m going to burn the entire house down without it.”
Colton nodded. “I think we’re all feeling that. Why would they take them?”
“To learn discipline,” Lizzy said softly. “She wants us to control it.”
“Smart girl,” Melody said, zipping up next to them. “We’ve got to figure out your connections. We won’t be able to do that until your magic reacts. So far, it’s just been like having three sets of twins with volatile magic.”
“We’re not related,” Colton sighed.
Melody smirked. “I know that. But you both hate the insinuation and it amuses me.”
Lizzy rubbed the bridge of her nose. “You have no idea how many times some silly girl asked me if I could get her a date with my brother.”
“And vice versa,” Colton said. “Why is that? We look nothing alike.”
“But you gravitate,” Melody said. “You read the same and others can sense that, though they don’t understand that. You must realize how attached to each other you are.”
Colton nodded. “But I’ve never thought about her… like that. I just… had this feeling like I had to protect her.”
“And that’s where we start,” Melody said. “What we’re about to do is highly questionable. We’re going to throw a deadly hex and see if something happens.”
Scorpius paled. “You know we can’t block the killing curse!”
“And I’m not going to throw it,” Melody snorted. “But I will use another unforgivable. I don’t want to, but it worked wonders for your parents.”
Scorpius’s head shot up. “You tortured them?”
Melody nodded. “Trust me, we all had a hard time with it. I threw up the first time I had to do it, but it was necessary. They felt each other’s pain and instinctively tried to fight. Not only could they not let others know of their connection, but standing up for your supposed enemy is a giant no-no. The cruciatis made their magic respond most violently and the extreme nature of it developed them quicker. We… we can’t afford to waste time.”
Scorpius nodded, and stepped in front of Lizzy. “But you can’t hit her. She couldn’t take it.”
Melody nodded. “We weren’t going to. We can’t afford to jeopardize her healing.”
“Wait, you’re going to torture him?”
Melody nodded again. “When Scorp’s parents were your age, they learned to block the curse while dancing. We won’t go that extreme, but I do expect some effort. You can block together.”
Ara cleared her throat. “Can we see the memories of mum and dad’s training?”
“I don’t have a problem with it,” Melody said. “But I’d rather you ask your parents first. They were rather intense.”
“And that torture scene with the Dark Lord wasn’t?” Ara squeaked.
“It was,” Melody said. “I didn’t say I didn’t think they would let you. I just said to ask for permission. I won’t be privy to one of their hexes. They aren’t very damned pleasant you know.”
“Yeah, guess not,” Ara said sheepishly.
“Glad you agree,” Melody said dryly. “Let’s begin.
Alex raced across the pasture to stand at her side. They joined hands and took their stances. Concentrating on trying not to vomit at the thought of once again casting an unforgivable on a pair of innocent teenagers, they took aim and let it fly. Scorpius fell to the ground, moaning softly against the pain. They’d thrown a shield, but it wasn’t strong enough to stop the curse. Lizzy was horrified, frozen in place as Scorpius writhed around.
“Don’t just stand there!” Ara shrieked. “Throw the shield! You can throw off the curse with it. I heard mum and dad talk about it.”
Scorpius thought his whole body was on fire and being crushed by a ten ton boulder. He’d never experienced pain like this before. He felt Lizzy’s presence immediately. She’d knelt behind him, holding his head in her lap as she took his hand. They weren’t allowed wands, too risky.
“Come on Scorp,” she sniffled. “I can’t do this alone.”
Scorpius summoned everything he had, willing his magic to fight back against the torture and wrap around Lizzy at the same time. She was all he really cared about. He couldn’t lose her. She was the most genuine person he’d ever met. Under her meek presence and understated appearance, there was a warrior there. She’d been tested by fire and came out stronger for it. He felt the magic thrum through him and give a pulse.
Lizzy gasped as she felt the extra magic. It felt like swallowing lightning. The gash in her side ripped open, blood flowing freely. She didn’t pay it any mind. She’d suffered that kind of pain her whole life. In fact, she’d been the victim of the cruciatis more than once in her life. Scorpius didn’t deserve that, especially not in lieu of her punishment. She pushed back, uttering the shielding spell.
The entire pasture lit up like a muggle atomic bomb, throwing Melody and Alex into the air. They landed with a thud against the side of a barn, caving the side in. The entire family stood in shock, unable to believe their eyes. Lizzy was covered in blood from her side, but when Scorpius yanked her shirt up to try and mend it, there was no gash. It was healed with little more than a thin jagged line in its place.
“Holy fuck,” Melody whined, trying not to move too much. She knew she’d just broken her back. “Remind me to ask Draco and Hermione to hold a shield next time.”
“Done,” Alex panted, trying to move his arms. He’d dislocated both shoulders and probably both knees if the pain in his legs was anything to go by.
“Gods I’m sorry!” Scorpius shouted as he ran over to the fallen daywalkers. “We didn’t mean it.”
“Yes you did,” Melody said with a weak smirk. “And I’ve never been more proud. Now we know what you can do.”
“What did we do?” Lizzy asked as she caught up.
Melody smiled. “You combined your magic. It’s a perfect storm. Completely pure magic, just like Hermione and Draco. You won’t be burdened with negating between Dark and Light spells like they are. You won’t be quite as powerful, but we’re talking about wiping out countries verses continents here. No one will be able to fight it, not even created beings.”
Draco and Hermione were running as fast as they could. They’d seen what happened from across the pasture where they were speaking with their youngest set of twins and their mates. They still hadn’t figured out how they worked together yet, but after Scorpius and Lizzy’s display, they had high hopes. They quickly righted the two daywalkers, administered pain potions, and turned to their son.
Scorpius paled. “We didn’t mean it. Honest!”
Draco couldn’t keep the serious look on his face. It gave way to a huge smile. “That was brilliant son! I’ve never been more proud of you.”
Scorpius’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
“He’s right dear,” Hermione said, pulling her son in for a hug. She frowned when she realized he towered over her now, almost as tall as his father. “That was amazing. You and Lizzy will be amazing together.”
Scorpius gave her a pat and pulled back, his face a mask of confusion. “But we hurt them?”
Melody chuckled. “Did they ever tell you about the time they got pissed off and blew up? Threw Draco right through the castle wall, it did. We fixed him up and brought them together to wake them up. They knocked everyone except Alex out, well, because it’s really damned difficult to knock out a vampire.”
“Really?” Scorpius asked in a small voice as he hugged Lizzy to him. It had really freaked him out.
“Really,” Hermione said. “We broke through three shields.”
“Damn,” Scorpius breathed. “We really will be like you?”
Draco nodded. “You’ll be brilliant.”
Ara cleared her throat. “Do you think we’ll be the same way?”
Draco gave his eldest daughter a soft smile. “Only one way to find out.”
“Well that was interesting,” James sighed. He’d been viewing the goings on from his bedroom. He still hadn’t been able to last more than a few hours without having to lie down. He knew everyone was worried about him, Annabel probably more than anyone.
Annabel giggled. “Scorpius looks like he swallowed a bogey flavored bean.”
“What is this bean you speak on?” Nahuatl said from her bed beside them. She too had been feeling horrible. At first, she feared she was pregnant but further tests revealed that she’d been flooded with Dark Magic and the only thing they could do was let it work itself out.
“Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans,” Annabel gushed. “Some are amazing. Others are…” she wrinkled her nose. “Well, if you get a bad one, it’s hilarious for everyone else.”
Nahuatl chuckled as she stroked Martin’s gold plumage. The phoenixes had decided to perch on her bedpost. “I imagine Scorpius was quite shocked.”
James barked a laugh. “Good old Scorpius. He’s got the potential to be dangerous, but deep down he has a heart of gold. He hates seeing anyone suffer.”
“A noble quality indeed,” Nahuatl said softly.
“Aye,” James said, pulling Annabel further into him when he felt a twinge of pain race up his back. “Gods this sucks. I mean… I love you Annable but this is driving me crazy.”
Annabel sighed. “I know.”
“Have you thought about just fucking and getting it over with?” Nahuatl asked.
“What are you on about?” James growled.
“You know what they say about making love? They call it La Petite Morte, little death. It is said that one dies when they reach climax, their souls raise from their bodies. It is the greatest feeling on earth to have a partner to catch your soul. Perhaps when your souls rise, they will sort themselves out.”
“Sounds like a bunch of romantic bullshit,” James snorted.
“I think it’s beautiful,” Annabel whispered, pulling away.
James winced and pulled her closer. “You really believe it?”
Annabel shrugged. “Doesn’t seem that far-fetched. I mean, I saw your soul rising from your body. I didn’t think about anything but stuffing it back in. I… I couldn’t stand the thought of being without you.”
James sighed. “You’d allow me to… to have you… for a story?”
Annabel chuckled. “James Potter, you already had me.”
James could scarcely breathe as she leaned over and kissed him. He couldn’t believe it. Nahuatl’s rich laughter brought him out of his haze. “Wait, what about you?”
Nahuatl gave him a sad smile. “That’s the thing about the elements. They are gifted at random and cursed to be forever alone. Probably another cruel twist of fate. They are often found with a phoenix, as they are the guardians of resurrection.”
“That’s horrible!” Annabel cried.
Nahuatl shrugged. “Perhaps, but I made my peace with it when my mother told me the heavy burden I bared. I am content to have a pack, to watch them grow. Look at Andra and Lazarus, how happy they are. They will have lots of children and I’m looking forward to being an aunt.”
The couple looked out the window and spotted the wolf couple learning about kicking stances from Severus. They were completely absorbed, yet they seemed to radiate around each other, never truly separated. Their eyes caught Serena and Jonah streak across the field behind them.
“And Jonah?” James asked.
Nahuatl chuckled. “I dare say that Serena was the perfect thing for his tremendously large head. They will have epic battles, but the beginnings are there. I am looking forward to what comes.”
“So you’re staying with the family then?” James asked.
Nahuatl nodded. “For as long as you’ll have me. I have no family any longer. They slaughtered my mother to get to me.”
“I’m sorry,” James croaked. “I didn’t know.”
Nahuatl shrugged again. “I’d rather not talk about it. She’s in my heart… and that’s all that matters.”
“Well, we’ll bring them to justice,” James growled.
Nahuatl sighed. “Perhaps. But there is a fine line between justice and revenge James. Albus is content in his new life. Do not let your hate guide you. Instead, think of what would happen should you focus on the wrong foe. Cygnus might have sentenced Albus and Martin to their first death, but he is not who we need to shut down. We focus on the Master.”
James looked at the opposite side of the pasture where Lily and Cecil were talking to his parents. They looked focused as they flourished their wands in different ways. No doubt, they were learning to fight in tandem. He wished he could let it go, but he couldn’t help but feel that Albus and Martin should have gotten that chance too. A mournful song burst from Albus’s beak, filling him with remorse and sadness. It changed to a song of hope and eventually happiness.
James swiped a tear from his eye. “Yeah Al, I understand.”
Nahuatl got up and walked to the door. “I’ll leave you to discuss it. Remember, love is the most important thing, not hate, and not power. Love.”
“Love,” James whispered into the sudden silence in Nahuatl’s wake. “I think I have that.”
Annabel nodded. “You have more love than anyone I know James. You just have to find it.”
James gave her a small smile. “I think I already have.”
