Lyra swallowed hard. The mere sound of Lucius’s low and smooth voice was enough to smash through the nerves she thought herself now possessed of, wiping them away entirely. Lucius’s voice was like velvet coated steel. As she twisted around to mutely look up at him, a twist of such forceful longing shot through her that it stole her breath away, bringing forth the memories of all they had shared back to the forefront of her mind once more. The effect he had on her was impossible to disguise, and so she allowed him to read it in her wide eyes as he drew a sharp breath and lifted his hand away from her shoulder.
“Mine?” he said, gesturing to the other coffee on the table in front of her.
She nodded, still without speaking.
“Thank you, pet.”
Lyra was powerless to look away from him as he dropped into the seat opposite her, for she was thrilling in the flash of possessiveness that intimate term was still laden with. Italy seemed to be serving him well; he was clearly in the height of health once more, his blond hair still worn long and loose around his shoulders, and the cut of his suit as fine as any of the robes he had worn in their old life. Finally breathing freely once more with that evidence before her, she eased back in her chair and waited for him to speak.
“I did not expect to see you when I came here, Lyra,” Lucius eventually said. “I hoped it would be you, but in truth after waiting so long I was beginning to think you would never come to me.”
She bit on her lower lip, not missing the effect that simple move had on him as his eyes instantly darkened. “Then Draco didn’t tell you it was me who would be here?” she said.
“No. He told me only that a face from the past wanted to see me; no more, no less. On your request, I presume?”
“Yes.”
He slowly nodded, still not tearing his eyes away from hers all the while. “Did you think I wouldn’t want to see you, pet?”
“I...I wondered.”
He lifted one brow in surprise. “I admit that after so long, I was beginning to feel a little resentment towards you; but then, I presume you must have a good reason for not coming to me before after all that passed between us,” he said.
It was time. Lyra laid a photograph of Leo down on the table, one he had sent to her only last week. Her lanky son grinned out of the frame, his long hair falling around his face with a casual elegance that never failed to remind her of the father he had lost. “My son,” she said unnecessarily, gazing down at him with a fresh burst of pride as he adjusted the house badge on his robes then winked up at her.
“A Gryffindor, Lyra? How utterly predictable.”
Despite the drawled words, there was a spark in Lucius’s grey eyes that brought a slow, reluctant smile to her face when she dared to look back up at him. “Not so, Lucius; I was a Ravenclaw, you know.”
“I did not know,” he said quietly. “It seems that despite all our shared history, there is much we still do not know about each other; for my part, I am aware there is much you need to learn about me. But for now, we are speaking of your son. He is the very image of his father at that age, Lyra; and most importantly, he seems to be happy and well. You must be proud of him.”
Lyra’s smile faded away, her eyes still fixed intently upon the wizard who had haunted her for so long. “Very much so. I know Sirius is lost to me now, but having our son is as if I still have a part of him with me.
Lucius nodded. “We had our differences, as well you know, but Sirius was a good man.”
“Yes. Yes, he was. I loved him, you know – I still do.”
“I do not seek to tarnish that memory or detract from it any way, Lyra. Once I would have gladly stolen you out of his arms, but now...”
Her stomach lurched. “Now?”
To her dizzying relief, he leaned forward and cupped her face in the palm of his hand. “Now I am both older and wiser, Lyra. I was a fool back then, and I have learned many painful lessons since. “
His thumb stroked across the bow of her lips and she closed her eyes, allowing him to draw her back into the world where there was no one but the two of them. It was something he always had been able to do all too well, but now she wanted nothing more. Mutely revelling in his touch, she gave up the softest of moans to encourage him on, but he drew a shallow breath and pulled back.
“Devilish witch,” he said under his breath, but she sensed there was no malice in his words. “You always could distract me to the extent I forgot all else, pet, but I won’t allow you to do so today – not yet. There is much we still need to say before we move onto the inevitable, isn’t there?”
Lyra knew precisely what Lucius meant by that, and a sharp, painful twist of desire shot through her body with just that brief thought of all that was surely to come. He was right, though, and so she glanced up at him again and reluctantly nodded. “You want answers.”
“More than that; I think I deserve answers.” Lucius captured her hand in his. “Lyra, it has been nine long years since I last saw you, but not a day has passed that the memory of you has not haunted me. I thought you would come to me once everything had settled, pet.”
The pain in his voice wrenched at something deep inside her, something she had kept locked away for far too long. Tears filled her eyes, but she didn’t look away from him as she finally gave him the words she knew he needed to hear. “I had my son to think of, and you...you had a wife, Lucius. I know you loved her too in your own way, and whilst she lived you couldn’t give me what I need from you.”
“And what do you need from me?”
She closed her eyes as a simple confession fell from her lips, one she had denied to them both for far too long. “Everything.”
Lucius’s hand tightened on hers. “Everything?”
Lyra didn’t even know if he was capable of giving her what she needed – but she had to find out. It was time to throw caution to the wind. “Yes,” she said quietly, not bothering to mask the waver of her voice. “I don’t want to be nothing more than a conquest to you, Lucius, a distraction to use at your will. I want – and need – far more from you than that. If we’re going to do this, then those are the terms I set. If you can’t give me that, then let me walk away from you now -”
“Walk away?” he interrupted hoarsely. “Lyra, I don’t intend to ever let you walk away from me again, and do you know why?”
Her heart leapt against her chest. “Why?”
“Because I have loved you from the first moment I saw you. The years since I saw you last have been a never-ending agony, imagining you in the arms of another man and still denying me all I need from you!”
Lyra stilled, barely daring to believe the words she heard him so passionately declare. “You...you love me?”
“More than I should ever have allowed myself to. Come, pet, surely you must realise the extent to which you have obsessed me since the moment we met!” Letting loose her hand, he ran his hands through his hair and groaned deeply. “This is no mere spell of lust between us, Lyra, and I am convinced that if only you would allow yourself to, you would see it too!”
“That choice was taken out of my hands a long time ago.” She drew a deep breath, but she had come too far to hold back on him now. “The truth of it became clear to me a long time ago, Lucius. Why else do you think I’d be here now? I need this just as much as you do, and there’s no reason to fight it any longer.”
Lucius’ eyes softened as he rose to his feet, pulled her up from the table and into his arms before dipping his head towards hers, meeting her lips for a brief kiss that stirred her more than any other they had shared before. “Then come with me, Lyra,” he said softly.
She did.
The End.
