The next morning, he tells her that he’s going to take a little time off work, and he’ll go see Ted and Andromeda today. Asking Kreacher to keep an eye on the children, she goes to see Ron and Hermione. Ron isn’t home, and Evie and Hermione sit and talk about unrelated things, mostly Hermione’s pregnancy; Evie gives her a few tips. Eventually Hermione asks how things are for her, and she tells Hermione that she thinks that she and Remus should get married.
Hermione looks at her in surprise first, then studies her, and finally asks, “Are you in love with each other?”
Evie looks somewhat chagrined and says, “Yes…well…sort of. Yes.”
Hermione looks confused and Evie brings her up to date; about how they’ve all forged themselves into a family even without realizing it, and how she can’t imagine being without him now, or Teddy either. Hermione nods, and Evie goes on, telling her about the conversation she had with Remus some time back; about how she is still committed to Severus and he to Tonks, but at the same time they each still care for one another deeply and understand each other, having both gone through the same loss together. She also tells Hermione that he is at Tonks’ parents house right now himself, having this same conversation; that he actually hasn’t decided yet himself.
Hermione says, “I think you’re right, and I think it would be a good thing. All your children have lost a parent, and while nobody can or will ever replace them, still – Teddy needs a mother, and James, Lily and Albus need a father. And I just don’t think you’d ever find anyone better than Remus Lupin to fill that role. He was a great teacher, I can’t imagine he’d be anything less than a great stepfather as well.” Evie nods, glad that Hermione sees it too.
Just then, Molly and Arthur arrive, having brought a crib with them for the nursery; and when they find Evie is there, she has the same conversation over again with them. Arthur says, “I’ve watched Remus a lot over the years; he joined the Order right after graduating from Hogwarts. He struggled so much, Evie – nobody would give him a job, and few wanted him around them. Especially nobody wanted him dating their daughter. He was so alone and so lonely, until he met Tonks and she finally convinced him that he was worthy of her.”
“He came and stayed with us for a few days when they were estranged over her pregnancy, and we talked a lot. I knew how much he loved her, and I was really afraid for him when she was killed. Afraid that he’d go back to being alone and lonely, and would isolate himself from everyone. I was glad to see him take the Ministry job; it meant that I got to see him on a daily basis at work, but more importantly, it gave him a real purpose and allowed him to make use of his considerable talents as well. And I was also glad to see him move in with you. It helped both of you so much, and while nothing could have taken the pain away, each of you trying to bear it alone would have been much worse.”
“I wouldn’t want to see him go back to being alone, Evie. Nor would I want to see you go back to being alone either. I think you’re doing the right thing.”
Evie tears up and Arthur and Molly hug her, Molly fussing over her like she always has. Grateful for their support, Evie says she’d best get back, and gives them all a hug again before leaving.
Remus arrives back at the house a few hours later, and, taking her hand, he takes her into the study and they both sit down. He tells her that he was completely surprised by Ted and Andromeda’s reaction; that they had immediately looked relieved and told him that they had very much hoped the two of them would stay together, for a lot of reasons. One because they themselves are very attached to all of the children by this point; and while they were fairly certain that Evie wouldn’t stop them from seeing the children even without Remus in her life (Evie nods at this, she wouldn’t have), still it wouldn’t be the same seeing them without Teddy, and vice versa. And they recognize how much the children already consider themselves brother and sister, and know how rough it would be on them to be split up, now.
But, more than that; they had come to love Remus like their own son long before they lost Nymphadora, and they want him to be happy. They know how much he loved and still loves their daughter; but they also know that living the rest of his life alone, with nothing but his memories for company, wouldn’t be good for him or Teddy either. And they know that Evie knows and respects that love as well (he had nodded, telling them that she actually suggested he talk to them first, and they smile), and they know that she cared about their daughter too, for her own sake. So, the idea is much more comfortable than it might be if he met someone later on, who had never known their daughter and who might even resent him continuing to visit them with the children.
He doesn’t tell Evie, but they all cried a lot during and after the conversation; he was deeply touched by their regard for him, and by their understanding and acceptance. He and Evie are both silent for a long moment, looking into one another’s eyes, and finally he says, “Evie…I can’t imagine living without you now, either. I can’t imagine taking Teddy away from James, Lily and Albus; nor can I imagine not being part of their lives. I don’t even want to imagine anything happening to you, but as you said…I definitely don’t want to imagine being prevented from being by your side, if something did. And you’re right; if that isn’t love, even if it’s not to the same degree we felt with our lost loves, I don’t know what is. I’m glad that you saw it, and made me see it, too.”
His eyes grow a bit concerned and he asks delicately whether she feels she should discuss it with Severus’s portrait. She considers for a moment and tells him what Severus had said, about him being a good man and being sure he’d watch over her and their son.
Remus recalls that day in the kitchen, when Severus walked in and accused him of trying to take Evie; and then the deep understanding that had passed wordlessly between them later, of what each of them had in their lives, and why Remus was no threat. Remus closes his eyes, again struck by how much Severus had changed, because of Evie’s love – and he knows that Severus was also sending him an underlying message with the words Evie has just related to him as well. He knew that Remus would understand the deeper implications of what he’d said, because of the understanding they’d had between them.
Evie tells Remus that he’s probably right though, Severus should hear it from her; plus she’d like to tell Minerva anyway. She knows that the danger has passed, Phineas had told her that he and Dumbledore both had also warned him early on about too much investment of himself in his portrait; and she knows that seeing him now won’t be a danger to either of them.
