“Shall we?” Draco asked as he set a pair of glasses on his nose.
“No time like the present,” Hermione answered, donning her own. “Did you happen to come up with a way to stop peripheral sightings?”
He reached in his pocket for a piece of parchment. “Not particularly. The only way to stop it until the twins can add a shield to the sides is to block it.”
“That’s going to be hell trying to run without being able to see out of the corner of our eyes.”
“Would you rather be dead?”
She cleared her throat and ripped off a few pieces of paper to put inside the earpieces of the glasses. “Not particularly. Let’s go.”
He smirked, fixed his own glasses, and then flicked his wand to lower the wards. He studied them for a few minutes and then frowned. “What is that?”
She cocked her head and swished her wand, trying to figure out what remnant of magic Draco was feeling that he couldn’t put his finger on. “It’s a blood ward of sorts. An old one. But it isn’t the old man’s. I don’t really recognize it.”
Draco sniffed. “Of course you wouldn’t. I remember now. It’s an old Wiccan spell, muggle. Annoying but effective against muggles.”
“Should we worry about it?”
“No.” He flicked his wand and muttered a few words in Latin. “There. Ready for the key.”
Hermione reached in her bag and grabbed a silver flask. She took a quick swig before handing it to Draco. He chuckled and knocked back a shot. She stowed it away and stuck the key in the lock. It turned immediately, the tumblers clicking so loud she could have sworn the walls in the house clicked with it.
“Well, there goes the element of surprise,” he mumbled.
She sighed and opened the door, casting a quick glance around before sliding inside and letting Draco in behind her. She closed the door and locked it shut, warding it against anyone who would try to get in now that the wards were down. She didn’t think anyone would actually try it, but one never knew.
“I’m glad there’s enough light,” she said, studying the front entrance. “We won’t have to worry about fumbling with torches.”
“Still wouldn’t be a bad idea,” he murmured, whispering a spell to light all of the sconces on the walls. “They can see better than us in the dark anyway.”
“True. Shall we?”
He stopped her progress with an arm. “We should reveal all the enchantments first. No telling what we’d walk into otherwise.”
She smirked and recited the spell with a quarter twist of her wand and a flick. The entryway, at least, was completely non-reactive. Draco nodded and made his way into the first sitting room. Surprisingly, all of the furniture was still in pristine condition. Then again, the place hadn’t been vacated that long. Still, she had expected some dust. There couldn’t be house elves about, could there?
“Too clean,” Draco murmured, flicking his wand and then scoffing. “Everlasting clean charms.”
“Why the disdain?”
“They ruin the furniture over time,” he explained. “But I suppose they weren’t really concerned with preserving the integrity of priceless antiques, were they?”
“Suppose not,” she murmured, inspecting the fireplace. “There is no blue glow.”
“Perhaps the spell only works in the room you’re in?”
“Worth a shot.”
Draco cast the spell and once again, nothing. “Fuck.”
“Maybe there just aren’t any hidden spaces here,” she said softly, looking around. “Of these glasses are preventing us from seeing it.”
“I’m not going to take them off,” he said with a snort. “So we’ll just have to hope that we don’t miss anything.”
“Where should we go from here?”
“Well, if you were a thirty foot snake, where would you go?”
“Out,” she snapped. “But it can’t get out.”
“So you try every way you know to get out.”
She rubbed her forehead. “The basement then. I guess we can grab that bottle of phoenix tears while we’re down there.”
They cautiously crept down stairs, wands at the ready to blast anything that dared slither in their direction. Their hands touched the entire way down, having learned their lesson about splitting up with the dragons. Basilisks were a different beast and they’d need their combined senses to combat them. Every time one of the old wooden steps creaked, they’d tense and look around even though the snakes probably wouldn’t make such a racket. In fact, the only person who had heard them before was Harry.
They reached the lab without any run-ins, which only made them more nervous. Underestimating the dragons even a little bit had gotten them in a bind. Hermione had made it her job to study Harry’s memories of fighting in the Chamber of Secrets until she knew the entire account like the back of her hand. Of course, Harry had nearly had a heart attack when she finally revealed what they would be doing, especially after how they’d come back from the dragons. But he’d given her the memories freely in hopes that she could gain some upper hand from it. She had one more trick up her sleeve, but she was not keen on using it until they had those extra phoenix tears.
The lab was unlike anything she’d seen in the wizarding world. It looked more like an animal testing facility, though there weren’t any harsh cages or wonky looking needles. There were merely huge glass terrariums and lots of glass lab equipment, mostly smashed on the ground. Metal tables were littered with glass and dried blood. Several residue potions which were too far gone to identify were pooled in globs all over the floor.
“Damn,” Draco muttered as he lit his wand and studied the room. “Place is trashed.”
She pointed to a metal cabinet in the back. “That isn’t. I bet that’s where the tears are.”
Draco quickly broke into the cabinet and held up three vials with a grin. “Looks like our lucky day. There is an extra vial of mandrake juice, too. Looks like the right color but we don’t have time to crack it and smell it.”
“We’ll have to use it last,” Hermione said, quickly opening her bag so Draco could stuff the vials in. “Do you see anything?”
“Not really. Then again, those tanks are really hard to look into aren’t they?”
She studied the glass on the walls and let out a soft laugh. They were extra thick and mirrored, no doubt in an effort to stop an accidental death. There were five of them, their fronts forming an half decagon on the side of the room. Each was paned in the thick mirrored glass and edged in what looked like reinforced steel. One of the doors was shattered and knocked off its hinges. The others looked in tact but she wasn’t taking any chances and put up a barrier just in case.
“We should call them,” she said softly.
Draco frowned and sealed the door to the lab. “I hope, for our sakes, they’re in there.”
“Maybe our luck will hold.”
“What luck?”
She smiled at his incredulous snort and took out a muggle tape recorder. Harry had recorded a few commands on it in hopes that it could help them track down the snake. She turned it on and held her wand aloft. Hissing filled the air and she reached out a hand to comfort Draco, who was shuttering slightly. The snake language reminded him too much of Voldemort.
“Can’t kill what you can’t see,” Draco muttered as he flicked is wand.
The mirror spell on the glass cleared, revealing exotic plants, artificial light, and a waterfall. It was beautiful. But as the hissing wore on, it was apparent a snake was inside. It was at least 10 feet long, quite a bit larger around than an Anaconda, but still a baby by basilisk standards. Hermione took out the Sword of Gryffindor and took a deep breath.
“Let’s hope this thing sticks around.”
Draco threw up a shield as she unlocked the door to the cage, careful to stay out of the way but close enough to assist if needed. The yellow eyes of the snake looked like a kaleidoscope through the twins’ glasses. Hermione cursed the lack of peripheral vision as the snake shifted at the last minute, twisting to curl around her. If she didn’t get the sword through its skull, they were both done for. In all of their studies, they’d only found one way to kill the snake. Its skull had a soft spot just on the top of its head. There was also a section under its bottom jaw that was thin enough to pierce up through the skull. That was how Harry had killed Voldemort’s basilisk. She just hoped she was quick enough.
The snake brushed against her ankle, pressing the shield far enough against her that it tingled. Its head slithered around, open for a strike. Draco didn’t give her a chance to think about her next action. He stunned the devil and she struck, knowing the spell wouldn’t last very long. Basilisks were almost as magically resilient as dragons. The blade of the sword went straight through the top of the snake’s skull, making a sickening crunchy pop as it went through the brain and out the bottom jaw. The snake shuddered for a moment and then went still.
Draco wiped his brow and whistled through his teeth. “One down.”
Hermione nodded, unable to choke out words at the moment. The sheer terror that had lanced through her when Draco had thrown the stunner left her breathless. And the most horrifying thing about the entire ordeal… she wanted to do it again.
AN: I'm back guys. Thanks to Kimbovet for checking up on me. I'm so sorry to keep you guys waiting. In my defense, I had to put this damned computer in the shop and it took FOREVER to get it back. Stupid motherboard parts. Anyway, as you can see, this chapter is lame. It's really hard to get back into the swing of things after being away from my precious (aka laptop) so long and since this chapter has taken me two friggen weeks, I decided to just post it. I'll work on Basilisk part two as fast as I can. As always, thanks to everyone for your reviews. I hope that I haven't lost everyone. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys!
