Malfoy manor was still as beautiful as it had been the last time she had visited, which had been before her daughter had been born. She knocked on the door and waited while the little elf that had answered went to get Lucius. She smiled when he walked down the stairs to greet her, she hugged him and then followed him back to his office on the second floor. While he got them drinks she made herself comfortable in front of his desk and waiting for him to join her which he did a moment or so later.
“So to what do I owe the pleasure, Mrs. Snape?” He asked after handing her the drink he’d made.
“Well” She took a sip “I need your help. I took a ‘What if’ potion a couple of nights ago and what I saw was truly horrendous”
“How horrendous?” He asked, curious.
“I was married to Ronald Weasley who was cheating on me and not even trying to hide it” She told him “I was cheating on him with Harry Potter and working at the ministry”
“Oh” His eyebrows nearly disappeared in to his hairline “So, you want me to take all of your memories and scratch out your eyes for you?”
“No” She laughed “Nothing quite that dramatic” She shook her head “I need to know what to do next”
“What do you mean?” He asked, looking confused “You’re married to Severus, you have a beautiful daughter and you are happy…right?”
“Yes!” She said quickly “What I meant was that I want others to see how happy this law has made me. Being truthful will look good to those who are voting and if they see that I am willing let them in on a secret world that I would usually be too afraid to talk about then they would feel that I am the minister that they deserve”
“Then do a mass showing of the memory” Lucius said simply.
“That’s the problem…and what makes seeing Harry so awkward” Hermione said “I read the instructions on this potion and all the warnings that come with taking it. The stuff with Harry was shown because there is a small part of truthfulness in what is shown”
“So you are sleeping with Potter?” He asked, confused.
“No” She shook her head exasperatedly “The truth in the matter is that Ronald really would cheat on his wife if there wasn’t some sort of mutual attraction there and Harry…well…”
“It means that Potter is attracted to you a little” Lucius guessed “And that he would be willing to cheat on his wife to be with you”
“Exactly” She sighed again.
“Then this is what you do” Lucius said pulling some parchment closer to him and started to write a few things down “Do an interview with Rita Skeeter. Make sure that you check over the story before you give it straight to her editor to make sure that Skeeter doesn’t change anything after you’re okay with it”
“Alright” Hermione nodded in agreement.
“When doing the story” He advised “Tell her about using the potion along with the warnings of the potion and then tell them what you saw. Make sure that you keep names out of it, saying that you married someone else and he was cheating on you and how you were horrified that you were so lonely you were cheating on him too” He made another note “Make sure that you get emotional. Cry if you can, she won’t be able to help but make a note about that and it will be in the story. It will show that you truly are human with human emotions and how, even though this law is insane, you are happy that you got placed with Severus and you want to help others be just as happy as you are”
“But won’t that work against me?” She demanded, worried that maybe she was helping Percy with his own argument.
“No” He answered “It will show that you are ever the Gryffindor and being kind and generous with your thoughts and feelings towards Percy. You are saying thank you, even if not aloud, to him for allowing this law to make you marry Severus. Then you hit them with why you want to take over and how you want to make sure that the law is fixed and formed perfectly to properly mold to the new couples in the future and how they think and feel about the subject”
“But I want to end the law” Hermione said “I don’t want to “make it work” or fit anyone, new couple or not”
“That is all for after you are minister” Lucius said dismissively “Once you have the position you can end it and I swear Hermione, no one is going to hate you for ending it” She looked at him for a moment “All the lying is just to keep up a good face for the public. Then you can come up with a reason for ending the marriage law when the time comes to save face”
“Okay” She smiled and nodded “Thank you, Lucius”

Severus was correcting papers and watching Aibhlinn when Remus walked in to the sitting room and snorted. Severus raised his eyes to the werewolf and raised his eyebrow at him for a moment before heading back to his work. Remus sat down and watched the little girl play with her toys and noted how Severus’s black eyes would lift momentarily to look at her as well before looking back down. Finally, after a few more moments of silence he put down his red tipped quill and leaned back.
“So, what are you doing here?” Severus asked his friend.
“I find it amusing that you are a house-wizard” Remus snorted “Not even I am a house-wizard”
“Blow me” Severus snarled “Hermione’s having a meeting with Lucius and we’re not just going to hand Aibhlinn over to the house-elves to be raised”
“Got it” Remus said “Love it. Anyway, what’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?” Severus asked.
“You said that Hermione was pretty freaked out about that ‘what if’ potion…so what happened?” Remus asked.
Severus went in to the whole story about what Hermione had told him she had seen in the potion-induced-trance. Remus listened quietly and agreed with certain parts before he offered his small advice and then sat back with a drink. This was what Severus liked about being friends with Remus, he didn’t force his thoughts and feelings down ones throat but merely offered them up to take or not. When Hermione came in she gave Remus a hug, talked about the babies and Tonks and then nicely asked if she could speak with Severus alone. When Remus was gone she turned and looked at him with tear filled eyes and told him what Lucius suggested, he agreed with the blonde man and didn’t understand what was wrong.
“I just don’t know” She answered “What if Ginny figures it out…she’s not stupid, you know?”
“I know” He asked softly “I know but you aren’t going to be using Potter’s name…”
“I know” Hermione said, shaking her head “I should just…calm down and go through with it but…”
“But…?” He led.
“Aibhlinn is almost one” Hermione said “In ten years she will be going to Hogwarts and meeting boys and dating and then getting married and what if…what if he cheats on her?”
“I’ll castrate him” Severus offered with a dark look.
“Severus” She looked torn and in pain “What if…she marries someone like that Ronald I saw in that vision?”
“What are you saying?” He asked.
“What if…” She bit her lip and looked as if what she was about to say was enough to get her checked in to the mental hospital “What if, once I’m minister, I didn’t get rid of the marriage law…but made it better, then we’ll know that she, and others like her, will be happy in the future?”
