Hermione used Lou’s shower at the same time and was unable to avoid seeing the scars that covered Lou’s upper back and the swell of her breasts.
“I hope he got put away, the one who did that to you.” She told Lou.
“The one who carved me you mean? Yeah, he got put in prison, but they never told me, it was years before I found out.”
“Was he the one who did that to your back too?”
“Yeah, but that was before this.”
Lou heard Hermione mutter under her breath. It sounded like ‘Bastard’ to Lou and she snorted and started to giggle. “I heard that.” She said.
“You weren’t supposed to. Come on, I want to do something with your hair before I start on the impossible task of mine.”
“Pegnose can do hairs miss. I is good at hairs.”
At six fifty, both girls were dressed and Pegnose had worked miracles on both their hair.
Hermione’s was smooth and sleek, hanging down her back in soft waves. She wore a royal blue gown that fitted snugly to just below her breasts, then hung in soft folds to her feet.
Lou thought Hermione looked sophisticated and very grown up and she told her so.
“Lou, I think it’s time you looked at yourself in the mirror. You look beautiful and it’s about time you realised that.”
She dragged a reluctant Lou over to the mirror and made her look at herself.
Lou didn’t believe it was her, her hair, now grown well passed her shoulders, was fastened on top of her head in a mass of curls. Tiny silver flowers sparkled amongst the dark locks. Her normally pale skin looked fresh and clean. She’d always had clear skin but now it seemed to glow, her cheeks pink and her lips full and rosy.
Her collar, normally black and unsightly to Lou, was now a silver chocker in the style of a serpent that exactly matched her ring. Her gown, a deep forest green, hung in soft folds, just covering the swell of her now ample breasts. It covered her shoulders to the tops of her arms, which were bare, but for a fine silver serpent wrapped round her upper arm. It too had dark green stones for eyes, just like the choker and ring.
Beneath the soft folds of the neckline, the gown fitted snugly over her breasts, ribcage, and her tiny waist, then flared out gently over her hips to the floor. There was a fine silver chain around her waist, and silver pumps to match.
“Is that me?” she asked Hermione. “Is that really me?”
“Of course it is silly, see how beautiful you look. Ron’s eyes are going to pop out of his head when he sees you.”
“I hope not.” Lou told her seriously. “If he falls over, he’ll drag me with him.”
Hermione looked at her startled for a moment, then they both went into fits of giggles.
They headed into the common room to wait for their dates and Lou turned a glorious shade of red when the fifth, sixth and seventh year Slytherin boys started whistling at them both.
“Damn, I knew I should have asked the new girl.” One of them said quietly.
Lou stayed close to Hermione, keeping her eyes to the floor.
Some of her friends stood with them, none wanting to sit down and wrinkle their gowns.
“You look fantastic Lou.” Stacy told her. “So do you Miss Granger.” She said shyly.
“Thank you Stacy, and my names Hermione, you don‘t have to call me miss.”
There was a knock at the door and Stacy ran forward to answer it.
“Don’t you dare.” Hermione told her. “Wait until they knock again, then take your time before answering.”
“But they’ll think we’re not going.” Stacy whined.
“Good, that’s what we want them to think.”
Lou and Hermione smiled, but Stacy looked panic stricken.
At the second knock, Hermione counted to ten, then nodded to Stacy who flew to the door and yanked it open.
She invited the boys inside and they took in the sight of the three young women.
Lou seemed to attract the most stares and she lowered her eyes again until Hermione nudged her.
“Hold your head up Lou. Show them all that you are proud and beautiful.” She told her.
Lou was nervous and felt very self conscious, but she did as Hermione said as Ron stepped forward and offered his arm.
“Why do I suddenly not feel good enough? You look stunning.” He told Lou as she took his arm.
“Ron, you don’t have to pretend, but thanks anyway.”
“Believe me, I am not pretending, you look bloody gorgeous. Come on, I can’t wait to show you off.”
“You look nice too.” She told him honestly.
Ron was in formal black dress robes, his shoes highly polished and his long hair pulled back into a pony tail at the nape of his neck. Lou thought he looked very handsome.
Harry, who liked Stacy a lot, had difficulty keeping his eyes off Lou’s backside as she walked with Ron in front of them. Even with her odd gait, he thought they swayed deliciously and felt guilty because he thought it. He tried not to look, but failed.
Fortunately for him, Stacy didn’t notice.
When Severus saw her enter on Weasley’s arm he did a double take. ‘Gods, when did she grow those?’ He wondered, seeing her ample breasts for the first time. Yes he’d seen them before, but she wasn’t so developed then and was still somewhat undernourished. ‘And she had a figure, when did that take shape? Bloody hell.’ He thought. ‘And that dress, it was so …Slytherin, so …sexy? Sensuous? Womanly? What the hell was he thinking? She was a young girl …woman.’ He scowled and checked on the punch, forcing his gaze away from her.
Lou looked round the hall, blushing still as several pairs of eyes seem to catch her.
When she saw Professor Snape, he was scowling and standing close to what looked to Lou like a giant punch bowl. Mrs Smythe had a punch bowl, but it wasn’t as big as this one. Then she met the Headmasters twinkling eyes and he smiled at her and gave a small bow in her direction.
She smiled back, knowing now what a bow was and gave him a small curtsy.
The long house tables were gone and in there place were several round tables.
Ron led her to one and held her chair while she sat down. Harry brought Stacy and Michael brought Hermione to the same table. While the boys went to fetch the drinks, Lou looked round in wonder, she’d never seen anywhere like this before. The ceiling, or sky, was dark, with hundreds of stars twinkling brightly, giant pumpkins set to float way above their heads, silvery cobwebs hung on the walls and Lou shivered when she thought she saw a large spider scuttle along one web and disappear.
The Headmaster welcomed them all, and told them to have a good time. Then food started appearing on peoples plates.
“My plate doesn’t work.” She told Ron, showing him her empty plate.
He laughed as he handed her a menu. “You decide what you want and tell the plate, then your food appears.”
Lou ordered pork medallions, cooked in olive oil with honey, tomato, tarragon and onions, there was salad to go with it and a jacket potato. For afters, she ordered crème caramel.
“Oo that was lovely. I haven’t had crème caramel for ages.” She said.
Ron, who liked the smell of her dessert, ordered one for himself and had to agree it was delicious. “I’ve never had it before, can you make it? You used to make all sorts of nice stuff during the summer.”
“I’ve watched it being made, but I’ve never tried to make it. I miss cooking though, I really enjoy it.”
During the evening, the table filled up with the same crowd that gathered in the Three broomsticks, and for the first time that anyone on staff could remember, the four houses were united as the group got bigger and bigger.
“It would seem what happened at the inn, was not such a fluke Severus. I think our Miss Black has a knack for drawing people together without even realising it.”
“It does look that way Headmaster, though it is beyond me how she managed to do so.”
Soon couples were on the dance floor and Lou watched them with a tinge of envy. She didn’t want to get up herself, she knew how stupid she’d look, besides, Ron said he couldn’t dance either. Still, it would have been nice if they could have had just one dance.
Ron was attentive to her all evening, telling her jokes and constantly asking if she was okay.
“I’m fine Ron honest, just a bit warm, it’s stifling in here.”
The hall was overly warm, all the candles and pumpkins giving off heat, four fireplaces roaring and the body heat of several hundred students all contributing.
“Do you want to go for a walk in the grounds. The bushes are usually lit up with fairy lights and there’s a load more pumpkins and stuff out there.”
“Yeah, I could do with cooling off a bit. You might have to help me with the steps though, I cant climb them on my bum in this gown.”
“My pleasure my lady.” He told her cheekily, helping her to her feet.
Lou held onto his arm as he led her from the hall to the main entrance. The doors were thrown wide and Lou could see the fairy lights on the bushes outside. “They look like they’re moving.”
“That’s because they are, they’re real fairies.”
“Honest? Can we go see?” She asked excitedly. Lou had never seen real fairies. Bobby told her about them, but to see them up close, that would be something.
She let out a squeal and giggled when Ron suddenly scooped her up and carried her down the few steps, before putting her down again. “I take it that was better than shuftying on your bum?”
“Definitely, thanks. Come on, I want to see the fairies.”
They walked round the garden that Dumbledore had made especially for this evening. Lou kept trying to catch the fairies, but they were so quick she kept missing them. She tired coaxing them, but that didn’t work either.
They decided if they stood still and quiet, that the fairies might forget they were there and land on them.
After standing still for a few minutes, an occasional giggle from Lou and the odd chuckle from Ron, the bush they were standing behind suddenly exploded and they were thrown to the ground with the force of the blast.
Ron barely managed to grab hold of Lou and pull her on top of him before they landed, to prevent her from hurting herself too much.
“Weasley. Black. Inside now. You both have detention after supper on Monday and fifty points from Gryffindor Weasley.”
“But why? We haven’t done anything.” Lou told him confused.
“Miss Black, you have just increased your detention to one weeks worth of detentions. INSIDE.” He shouted, watching as they got up and headed for the main entrance.
His scowl deepened as Weasley picked her up effortlessly and carried her up the steps. A low growl emitted from his throat before he turned and blasted several more bushes just for the hell of it.
Lou was about to say something else, but Ron put a finger to her lips as he put her back on her feet.
“Why did he do that?” She asked Ron. “I don’t understand.”
“Probably because your with me. He hates Gryffindors, me and Harry especially, you probably got caught in the crossfire, sorry.”
“I’m not so sure, I think he’s probably mad at me for something and you got caught up in it. He’s been scowling at me on and off all night.”
“Come on, lets enjoy what’s left of the evening, your still the most beautiful girl here and I want to show you off.”
Lou blushed shyly. To her, Ron seemed so genuine and she was enjoying his complements, even though she was unused to them.
Ron led her back to the table, told Hermione what happened and went to fetch drinks.
Were you hurt Lou?” Hermione asked.
“No, just shocked. I don’t know why he blasted us for, we were just trying to catch a fairy for goodness sake.”
Harry and Stacy started laughing. “You were what?”
“Catching fairies, the bushes were full of them and I’d never seen one before, so we were trying to catch one.”
“Did Professor Snape know what you were doing?” Hermione asked.
“I dunno, I doubt he could even see us, we were behind this big bush, giggling and standing still, then boom, the bush exploded and we went flying.”
“Then he most likely thought you were up to no good, most couple sneak into the bushes around this time for a snog. Well they do.” Stacy said, at Harry and Hermione’s expressions.
“Oh, but we weren’t, I told you, we were trying to catch …”
“Yeah, we know.” Harry put in, trying to stifle a laugh as Ron returned with the drinks.
The friends chatted and laughed, Lou watched them dance, she sang quietly to herself when she heard muggle songs played that she knew. Another thing she missed a lot was her wireless and being able to sing along with it.
When a song by Judy Collins came on, Lou couldn’t help but sing along to it. The song was an old one, but it was a favourite of hers and she soon lost herself to it, forgetting every one and everything as she sang.
(a/n: Song;) Both Sides Now: Judy Collins.)
Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show, you leave 'em laughin when you go
And if you care don't let them know, don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange they shake their heads, they say
I've changed
But something's lost and something's gained in living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know love at all.
The song finished and Lou was still in a world of her own for several seconds, until she heard someone clapping. The clapping grew louder and she turned to find out what she’d missed, only to discover they were clapping for her. She’d been singing aloud, carried away with the song and not realising that most everyone in the hall had stopped to listen to her.
She turned white then grey when she realised and didn’t know what to do. She grabbed Ron and tried to hide her face in his robes. He held her gently but told her not to hide, that even the Professors were clapping for her, that she had an amazing voice and should not be embarrassed.
Eventually, Ron and Hermione persuaded Lou to face everyone and accept the applause. She even managed a shy smile, but when students started asking her to sing some more, she steadfastly refused.
A half hour later, and Ron had persuaded Lou to have a slow dance with him, promising her that he was a lousy dancer and would surely make her look good.
After what he said, she was surprised to find that Ron was actually a very good dancer. He moved smoothly, holding her firmly so she didn’t stumble, even though they didn’t move far. Lou had never danced with anyone before and after a few minutes, she started to relax into him, resting her head against his shoulder.
“Thank you.” she told him softly.
“What for?” Ron asked.
“For this, asking me, dancing with me, being nice.” She chuckled. ”Trying to catch those stupid fairies.”
Her chin was raised by one of Ron’s fingers, forcing her to look at him.
“Lou, I should be thanking you. I’ve never enjoyed this kind of thing before, until tonight that is. You made tonight special for me, so much so that I don’t want it to end. Even worth getting blasted from behind that bush was special, because I was with you.” He told her, his ears and cheeks as red as her face.
She stared into those startling blue eyes of his, unable to speak. No one ever said anything like this to her before and she didn’t know how to answer him. So she did what she always did when someone made her feel happy, she hugged him tight.
Ron was about to place a gentle kiss on top of her head when a pair of hands grabbed their shoulders and roughly pulled them apart.
“Mr Weasley.” Snapped a deep voice. “What do you think you are doing?”
“Miss Black, do you not think it is time you retired for the night?” Professor Snape asked her, his voice hard, the question sounding more like a command.
Severus was infuriated when he saw Lou and Weasley on the dance floor. The fact the red head was holding her close to him was bad enough, but when she wrapped her arms around the little weasel and held him tight, Severus was fit to explode. Hadn’t he already caught them behind a rose bush canoodling? Wasn’t it bad enough that they were in each others arms when he blasted away the stupid bush? Especially after what happened to her so recently. What the hell did she think she was playing at?
“What? Why Professor?” Lou asked, once again puzzled at his attitude.”
“Is it not enough that you have already earned yourself a weeks detention Miss Black? Or would you care to make it two?”
“No, but I don’t understand what we’ve done. I don’t want to go to bed yet, no one else is leaving.” Lou said, really not understanding what was happening.
“Very well, two weeks it is, and another fifty points from Gryffindor Mr Weasley, for dancing too close. Now off, the pair of you.” He told them, giving his darkest glare at them both.
Again, Lou was about to complain, and again, Ron gave her a pleading look, telling her to keep quiet.
She did, but she glared back at the Potions Master.
She grumbled about him as they made their way from the dancefloor to tell their friends they were leaving.
“It’s not fair, we didn’t do anything. Why does he keep picking on us?” She wanted to know.
“Because he’s Snape that’s why. You should know as well as anyone what he’s like.” Ron told her.
“Yeah, but this is just downright victimisation. He blasted us, and we got into trouble. We danced the same as everyone else did, and we still got into trouble. You’ve lost a hundred points and got a detention, and I’ve got two weeks detention. For what?”
“Since when did Snape need a reason?” Harry asked when they told the others what happened.
“Anyway I’d better go, otherwise he’ll find something else to have a go at us for.”
They said their goodnights and Lou put her arm in Ron’s as he led her from the hall.
“I feel like this is my fault you know.” She told him.
“Well don’t. Neither of us did anything wrong, and couples are always getting told off for dancing too close, we were just unlucky that it was Snape who caught us and not one of the other Professors.”
“Precisely Mr Weasley. Where do you think you are going?” Snape asked them as he emerged from the shadows near the entrance to the dungeons corridor.
