Chapter 43
Severus strode after her, catching hold of her arm and spinning her to face him. “Paula don’t go.” He said softly, his eyes searching her face for some small expression of forgiveness.
“The tatcho drom to be a jinney-mengro is to dick and rig in zi.”
“Pardon?”
“The true way to be a wise man is to see and bear in mind. Leave me be for a while Severus, let me think, let me breathe.”
“If that is what you want, I will oblige, but only after we are both safely back in the grounds of Hogwarts. Already the centaurs have attempted to attack us on our search through the forest.”
Riley took the pair safely to Paula’s camp and Severus left her there. She was not the only one who needed to think hard on what had happened, what she had told him. As regards what she told him in the field, it would have to wait for another day.
Paula and Severus continued with their classes as normal over the next few weeks. Paula for the most part kept to herself, showing her face in the hall at breakfast and retreating to her camp for lunch and in the evenings. On weekend mornings she took her small group of students into the mountains, teaching them dark magic, how to focus and apply, how to counteract, redirect and control. In the evenings she would take to the skies with Riley.
Severus would look out each evening, only to discover that she no longer danced round the fire, when they passed in the corridors she would acknowledge him with a brief nod and nothing more.
By early march he could stand it no longer. One Friday evening he made his way down the camp as soon as classes were over.
“Sastipe (a greeting) Severus.” She said curtly.
“Paula. I would like it if we dined together this evening.”
“Why?”
He was stumped for a moment. “Because … I would. I think it is time we talked like sensible adults.”
“Ah. You wish the diva'no. To discuss things, settle our disputes.”
“I do, don’t you?”
“Yes. I think it is best. I have groovni and stranglis for supper.”
“Paula the language, I do not understand.”
“Groovni, cow, beef, strangli, onions. We eat at efta. Seven.”
When Severus returned at seven o’clock, Paula had the table set with a white lace tablecloth, gold edged plates, cutlery and goblets. In the centre of the small table was a small gold candelabra with a display of small blue flowers around the base.
“The table looks nice.” He said, passing her a bottle of red wine. “A peace offering.”
Taking the wine and placing it on the counter, Paula reached up and retrieved the black, silver inlaid box she kept on a shelf above the window. The same box he‘d been curious about when he‘d first looked inside her wagon back in September. She placed the flat of her palm against the lid then opened it.
“What is that?” He asked.
“Peace offering.” She repeated his words, removing and offering him a tiny, but ornately inscribed glass casket.
“What is th … Merlin! It can’t be.” Holding it carefully in the palm of his hand, Severus stared in wonder at the pale blue swirls that inhabited the tiny casket. “Is it?”
“Mulésko dud? Yes.”
“But how, where did you get it? How did you get it? I have never been able to get my hands on will-o'-the-wisp, and believe me I have tried. I have never even seen one before.” His voice was no more than a whisper as he stared at it.
“Guyo-mengreskey tem. Pudding-eaters' country, Yorkshire.”
Severus continued to stare at the little box, mesmerised by the movements inside.
“Here, cover it and never watch it for more than a moment lest it swallows your mind.”
Severus took the scrap of black cloth and wrapped the box carefully, putting it to one side. “Paula, I do not know what to say. Will-o'-the-wisp. I am indebted to you, thank you.”
“Remember it can only be used once, set it free and it will bring me to you wherever you are, then it is gone. Keep it with you at all times, even if we are together, no matter where or when, but use it only as a last resort. You will know when the time is right.”
“Paula these things are almost priceless, can you get more of them?”
I take only what I need, when I need it. Mulésko dud is not for selling, it is too precious. The one you have belonged to my grandfather and his grandfather before him. I had no use for them until now.”
“Them, you have more?”
“I have two others, one was my dado‘s, left with baba (grandmother) when he returned me, and is destined for another, the other I caught myself, it too is designated. This however, is worth having.” Bringing the opened red wine to the table and filled the goblets, then retrieved the steak and onions, fried potatoes and cabbage, a bowl of peas and a loaf of bread.
“Xa mansa.”
“What?”
“Break bread. Eat with me.”
For the next ten minutes they ate in silence, neither knowing what to say.
“Groovni, cow.” Paula told him holding up a piece of steak. “Strangli, onion.”
“Groovni and strangli. It does not have quite the same ring to it as steak and onions.”
“Lon, salt. Pan’i, water. Boobi’s, peas.”
The last one caused Severus to laugh. “Boobi’s? Not a term I have heard applied to a vegetable before.”
Paula blushed slightly. “Charo.” Paula pointed at her plate.
“Enough, I will never remember all of these words anyway. Paula I am not here for a lesson in Romane.”
“I know.”
“Paula it is true that I have never been able to see past the name of Potter, until you. Now … I find I am at odds with myself. Does the younger Potter know of your relationship to him?”
“Not yet. I will tell him when the time is right. I do not want it to get in the way of his school work and whatever else he must do, his soul is troubled enough already. He also has more inside him than is right. He holds … another’s soul, you already know this, as does kak, but the boy does not. Harry’s soul must be protected at all costs, this other tries hard to invade him, control him, even though this alien soul does not realise where it is. Harry has lost someone close to him I think, it was recent because he still mourns. ”
“His Godfather, Sirius Black. It happened during his fifth year and he blames himself for the mans demise.”
“Sirius Black? I know that name, but where from I cannot remember.”
Severus told her what there was to know about Sirius and his wrongful imprisonment. He gave no indication of caring that the man was dead, only the bare facts. Severus still resented him.
“He was the one on all the posters last year, now I remember. So he was Harry’s Godparent.”
Severus went on to tell her a little about the Marauders, how they made his life hell when he was a child and how their hatred of each other had never abated.
“There is more to it than that though Severus, something you keep locked inside of you. That is what eats at your soul. You deny camo, or had it taken from you.”
“Camo?”
“Love.”
“I… loved someone who loved another.”
“Do you still love… her?”
“Yes. Though it is different now.”
“How so?”
“Because you have entered my life. Turned it upside down and … I don’t know what I feel any longer. You infuriate me as no one ever has, yet I find I cannot move forward without you.”
Paula knew it had taken a great deal for him to admit that. “The last time we spoke I told you; Dinneleskoenoes I give you my camo. You duke me, cause my heart to dukker mi-dubble-eskey. Never have I hokkan you.“
He nodded.
“It means; like a fool I give you my love. You hurt me, caused my heart to ache for Gods sake. You are not the only one who’s world is upside down Severus, I did not come here expecting this. My life has always been one of solitude, I have never searched for camo, love. Now it fills my heart and … I find it difficult, painful, too painful.” Paula turned away, unable to face him after revealing her own innermost thoughts and feelings.
Severus stood and walked round the table, standing behind her and drawing her into his arms. “I think, no I know, that we have said things that should not have been said. No I do not mean tonight, tonight we have opened ourselves to a truth that I for one was reluctant to accept. It is true the name of Potter holds some stigma in my mind and my heart, but you are a Potter so now I must revise that stigma, because I cannot in all honesty place you in the same category as the Marauders. You say you love me, like you I did not seek it, in fact this is a most dangerous time for us to find one another, to feel as we do. But love has a way of creeping up and taking hold of ones soul without ones knowledge, until it is too late. After Lily died I became bitter, twisted. I turned against the Dark Lord but did not allow myself to admit others into my life. At least until you arrived and forced your way inside.”
Paula turned and looked at him, her eyes seeking the truth of his words from deep within his own black ones. “I think, I think perhaps you should be jilling Severus. Before … please jill.”
Severus looked crestfallen. “You want me to go?” He asked rather stiffly. After he’d bared his soul to her she wanted him gone and he could not understand why.
“Yes. Go now. Otherwise … my promise, I cannot break my promise.”
“What promise? Paula tell me, what promise?”
“I told you already. I promised my grandparents I would not … please go.”
A look of dawning crossed his face and for a moment, just a moment, he was tempted to refuse her request, to pull her back into his arms and kiss her with all the passion and emotion he was feeling. Letting go of her and giving a small bow before leaving was one of the hardest things he had ever done.
