The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 43
Lucy had to drag herself from the bed next day, and her first destination was the shower. Luckily she woke before the others and was dressed and ready to go down for breakfast as they were rising from their pits. Grabbing her bag, which fortunately she readied the night before, and timetable, she gave the four sleepy girls a quick wave and hurried out the dorm before they were awake enough to start asking questions.
”Hello, you must be the new sixth year. I’m Adrian Pucey, prefect and chaser for Slytherin. If you need help at any time, let me know. Professor Snape said to watch out for you.”
Lucy turned to the tall boy, no young man, before her. “Right, thanks.” She said, not sure why she needed watching. “I’m going for breakfast, see ya.” She quipped, hurrying through the portal before he could say anything else.
Severus was surprised to see Lucy arrive early for breakfast, his Slytherins were normally last minute, especially on first day of term. He watched as she took a seat at the house table, fill a plate with bacon, egg and sausage, along with some bread and butter with which she made a sandwich, then place her timetable next to her plate so she could study it while she ate. Unable to discern any kind of disquiet or melancholy about her, he concluded she must have settled in and spent a reasonably comfortable night and turned his attention to his own breakfast, looking up occasionally as the rest of his house began making their way to the table.
Her first lesson was magical creatures with Hagrid. She would be joining the second years for that lesson, then she had charms before lunch with Professor Flitwick, whom she liked, but again it would be with second years.
Lucy was so engrossed in her thoughts she was surprised when someone sat next to her, gave her bottom a quick, but firm squeeze, and said good morning.
“Hiya Blaize, sleep well?”
“Like a log, you?”
“Yeah, I went out like a light.” She was also surprised to see the table was almost full. “When did this lot arrive?”
“Probably while you’ve had your nose pressed to that piece of parchment. Is it your timetable?”
“Mm hm. I’ve got a lesson with Professor Hagrid, but I’m with the second years since I’ve… well never mind that. Then it’s charms. What do you have first?”
Ancient runes, then advanced transfiguration.”
“I’ll see you at lunch then, I want to get there a bit early, see what the crack is.”
Not having heard the expression before, Blaize wondered what crack she was talking about, and why she was taking lessons with the younger students.
“Ello young Lucy, yer a bit early, I avent finished preparing for class yet.”
“Sorry Professor, I just wanted time to see what’s happening before the others arrive. It’s going to be embarrassing enough being the only sixteen year old in amongst all those second years. Are we doing dragons?”
“Nay lass, flobberworms.”
“Ugh, they sound disgusting, what are they?”
“Here. Carry this round the side of me hut an ye can ‘elp me set ‘em up before the students arrive.”
Lucy carried the box of worms to a long bench set against the side of Hagrid’s cabin, then placed the individual 10 inch brown creatures at intervals, while Hagrid laid out small amounts of lettuce so the students could feed them.
Lucy held one close to her face so she could study it. “What do they do Professor?”
Hagrid scratched his head. “Not a lot really. Eat lettuce, and they’re good for thickenin’ potions too. Allus ave a good supply in for Professor Snape I do. If yer get a detention wi im, mos’ likely ye’ll fine yerself squeezing the mucus from ‘em.”
“Lovely.” Lucy muttered sarcastically.
The lesson was slow and boring, Lucy slightly annoyed at the constant whispers and curious looks she was getting from the younger students. Then Hagrid told them Lucy was assisting him for care of magical creatures, so she didn’t feel quite so out of place, and for that she was grateful, but she sincerely hoped Hagrid would have something a bit more exciting for the next lesson.
Charms was better, though Professor Flitwick did not introduce her as his assistant. He did however have her seated apart from the second years, giving her a list of charms to execute by will, but suggested she at least try them with her wand first, and if she used her will to implement the charm, to wave her wand anyway so the rest of the class would not grow suspicious.
She managed a druro charm with her wand, along with accio, and an incarcerous, though the last one was not very good until she applied her mind magic to it. The rest of the charms were relatively easy, most of them being covered during the summer when Flitwick gave her one to one instruction. She was given an essay to complete on protective charms, to be handed in next lesson. The rest of the class had to practice the sticking charm they’d been learning that morning.
“Hey, how was your first morning?” Blaize asked when he saw her enter the common room to drop her bag off.
“The flobberworms were boring, but charms was good. I’ve got homework though. What about you?”
“Pretty good, I’ve got three feet of parchment to write on Gebo for runes, and another foot for transfiguration.”
“Ahem.” Both turned at the slight clearing of someone’s throat, and Lucy moved to stand slightly behind Blaize when she discovered Malfoy and two other boys looking at them.
“Alright Draco, what can I do for you?” Blaize asked, greeting his friend, at the same time noting Lucy’s reaction.
“Nothing, I was hoping to have a word with the new girl, that’s all.”
“I don’t want to talk to you.” Lucy told him.
“Come on, I’m sorry about before.” Draco said. “I was wrong about you.”
“No kidding? Would you still be apologising if what you called me was true? I doubt it.”
“Possibly not, I admit that, but you’re a Slytherin now, and we all stick together no matter what. We have to, the rest of the school all avoid us like the plague. All we have is each other. I’m willing to try again, why can’t you?”
“Because the only reason you’re making friends now is because… “ Lucy’s throat started to close as she almost revealed what Severus told her at Grimauld Place.
“Lucy what’s wrong?” Blaize asked concerned.
“Nothing, I’m fine. I’m going for lunch, maybe I’ll see you later okay.” She left the common room as fast as she could without actually running. She couldn’t believe Malfoy even dared to approach her, let alone pretend to apologise.
That was how Harry, Hermione and Ron found her. They had just reached the main hall when she came flying round the corner from the dungeons.
“Lucy, over here.” Hermione called. “What’s wrong, you look like a deer caught in headlights.”
“Malfoy.” She spat.
“What did he do to you?” Ron asked, his face set and wand drawn.
“Nothing, put that away.” Lucy said. “ But he tried to apologise and I suppose I overreacted a bit. Then… well I kind of made a run for it and I probably sound like a complete idiot. How are you lot?”
“We’re fine.” Harry told her. “And you don’t sound like an idiot. We looked out for you at breakfast but by the time we came down you were on your way out. “What classes did you have?”
“Magical creatures and charms, both with second years. How embarrassing is that? I’ve go transfigiwhatsit after lunch, then a free period.”
“Do you want to come and sit with us, the others won’t mind. Have you managed to make any friends in Slytherin yet?” Hermione wanted to know.
“Yeah, he’s called Blaize something or other. And I think I better sit at my table, Professor Snape said I have to, maybe once I’m settled yeah?”
“Okay, we’ll see you later, maybe we can talk properly after supper tonight.”
Lucy walked off to sit with the Slytherins, while her friends headed for the Gryffindor table.
It wasn’t long before she felt someone slide onto the bench beside her and automatically turned to smile at Blaize. Only it wasn’t Blaize, it was Malfoy and his two bodyguards. Not that Lucy knew what they were.
“Go away, leave me alone Malfoy.”
Draco smirked at her. “Not until you say you forgive me. I’ll only keep pestering you until you do.”
“Well don’t, I’m not interested. And why did you tell all those people on the train we were ’acquainted’ I think was the term you used?”
“Because we are, even if it wasn’t the most affable of encounters. We both said some unpleasant things to each other. I’m willing to forgive and forget, why can’t you?”
“Because you started it that’s why and I know you only want to make friends for one reason.” She hissed. “And it’s not because you like the colour of my eyes.”
“I think you have lovely eyes, green is my favourite colour after all.”
“Get lost.” “Blaize.” She called, patting the empty space at her other side when the dark boy entered the hall.
Lucy sat and ate her lunch in silence, a permanent scowl on her face while Malfoy, Blaize and the others chatted over her head. She refused to join in the conversation while Malfoy was involved. She knew it was a rather childish way to behave, but at the moment she didn’t know how else to react.
