Things didn’t go as Lucius planned when he popped the
question either. He sat James down on
the bed and told him that he loved him and wanted to get married.
James was quiet for a few minutes. “Is this just because of the baby?”
Lucius frowned. “No,
not entirely anyway. James, I’ve been
thinking about this a lot these past few weeks.
I hated having to be separated from you.
I hate having to sneak around. If
you’ll recall, I publicly switched sides last night before I knew about the
baby. I won’t be able to spy for you any
more, but I just couldn’t.”
James let out a deep sigh.
“I hated being apart too. And
honestly, it’s a bit of a relief that you switched sides. We won’t have your good information any more,
but now I won’t have to worry every time you go to a Death Eater meeting. I just…
I need to think about this. I’m
going to go visit Sirius.”
Lucius tried to be patient, but James was taking a long time
to think about it. But whether they were
getting married or not it was agreed that Lucius and his family needed to be
moved for their own protection.
Lucius moved ahead with the divorce. Draco was given the choice of which parent he
wanted to live with, and while he loved his mother, he chose to be moved to Grimmauld
Place with his father. The day after the last day of term they
headed back to Malfoy Manor to pack their things.
Narcissa was leaving too.
Even though Lucius was divorcing her, she was still in danger. So she was moving to a small cottage in the
South of France. She and Lucius sat down
and discussed the matter, and that was the house she wanted.
Draco sat in the dining room having lunch with his
mother. Packing up his things and
leaving was harder than he’d thought it would be. “Mother, are you really okay with this?” he
asked.
Narcissa gave her son a soft smile. “Yes, I am.
I care for your father, but Draco, our marriage was arranged by our
parents. I want him to be happy, and if
this makes him happy then so be it.
Don’t worry, he’s not shafting me.
This is going to be a civil and fair divorce.”
Her words made Draco feel a little better. “Will I still get to se you?”
Narcissa nodded. “Of
course you will sweetheart, although we may have to settle for writing back and
forth for a little while… Don’t worry,
it’ll all work out.”
Draco nodded and finished his sandwich. Then he went back to putting his entire life
into trunks and bags. He’d wanted
change, but now that he’d gotten it, it didn’t seem all that great.
Harry didn’t go back to Privet Drive,
and he couldn’t possibly be more thrilled.
It had been agreed that it would be better for him to stay at Grimmauld
Place with his father and potential step family.
He wasn’t getting a vacation though. After what had happened at the Ministry, it
was also decided that Harry needed to be properly trained. He’d proved that no matter how much they
tried to protect him, he was determined to fight.
The first step was for Harry to learn Occlumency. James and Severus decided to work together on
that project. James had a very short
temper, and Severus was being kept busy.
Ever since Voldemort had been discovered at the Ministry he’d been much
more active.
James tried to keep his patience with Harry, but it wasn’t
easy. All of a sudden he was being treated
like a porcelain doll on top of being miserable. He did eventually accept Lucius’ proposal.
Since James was the one stuck in the house instead of Sirius
he spent a lot of time making things the way he wanted them. Sirius didn’t mind. Keeping James happy meant keeping the
peace. The only bad part was that James
was always hot and kept the place very cool.
Sirius and Severus also spent the summer working on their
friendship. Everyone but James was
surprised at how well they were getting along.
Sirius spent quite a lot of time at Severus’ home at Spinner’s End.
“So, when did you become so interested in potions?” Severus
asked one afternoon while Sirius was there assisting him.
“Since an angry pregnant man moved into my house,” Sirius
grinned. “There are too many objects lying
around that can be turned into weapons.”
Severus chuckled. “I
see… Well, I certainly don’t mind the
assistance. Actually, I’m in the mood
for a cup of tea if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all,” Sirius said as he headed to the kitchen.
Severus was currently working on a male fertility
potion. Ever since he’d found out James
was pregnant the idea fascinated him. He
went with James to see a midwife who specialized in male pregnancy and he asked
a lot of questions about how it worked.
Then he put his vast knowledge to use to create a potion that would allow
any wizard to conceive who wanted to. He
wasn’t sure why it was so important to him.
He worked quietly until Sirius came back and set the tea
tray on the edge of the table. “Thank
you Sirius,” he said as he stirred the potion counterclockwise seven times.
“Welcome,” Sirius said.
He took his cup and put a few sugar cubes into the hot liquid and went
to take a seat. “Do you think you got it
right this time?”
Severus nodded. “I’m
fairly certain I have it right.” He put
his stirring soon down on the tray next to the tea spoon and took one cube of
sugar for his tea.
“So how are you going to test it?” Sirius asked, taking a
sip from his cup.
“I haven’t figured that out yet,” Severus admitted. He found himself watching Sirius while he
reached for a spoon to stir his tea.
Then he went to join Sirius by the fireplace. “Would you like to be a
guinea pig?”
Sirius shook his head.
“No, I think not. I’d like to
have an heir, but I don’t want to be a single parent, especially not now.”
Severus shrugged and continued to sip his tea. He couldn’t blame Sirius. He didn’t want to test it on himself for the
same reason. He was destined to be alone
and unloved.
The two men sat in silence for a while. Severus could tell Sirius wanted to say
something, but he remained quiet for a long time.
Sirius did want to say something, but he wasn’t sure how to
approach the subject. He and Severus
might have become friends, but it was new territory for both of them. He didn’t want to ruin it.
“If you want to ask me something, just come out with it,”
Severus said bluntly at last.
Sirius bit his lip.
“I was just thinking about something.
We’re two bachelors who haven’t had any companionship in a long time…”
“So you want to have sex?” Severus raised his eyebrow.
Sirius blushed a deep crimson. “Something along those lines, yes. You are direct aren’t you?”
Severus shrugged. “I
don’t see any reason to dance around the subject. You’re correct, we are both single adults,
and we should be discussing this as such.”
Sirius sighed. “I was
afraid that you’d be upset with me.”
“I don’t see why.
You’re not the only one with needs.
I’ve been thinking about it myself, but didn’t know if you’d be
attracted to me. Attraction is part of
it you know.”
Sirius shrugged. “I
know I used to tease you a lot, but that was me being childish. James had a long talk with me about
that. You’re really not all that bad
looking.”
“Thanks….” Severus sighed.
“No- I didn’t mean…”
Sirius growled softly. “Why does
this have to be so hard? James and
Lucius didn’t sit and discuss things.
They just… you know…”
“I do know….” Severus nodded. “I walked in on it. Though they did discuss things afterwards
quite extensively. But we’re not them.”
Sirius frowned. “No,
we’re not. We have a long, volatile
history. I’m sorry, this was a bad
idea.”
Severus reached out and gently took the other wizard’s
hand. “No, it wasn’t. I think it’s a good idea, as long as we don’t
lose our heads. I still have a job to
do.”
“Of course,” Sirius nodded.
“I think we can handle it.”
“All right then,” Severus said as he downed the rest of his
tea. He got up and headed to the stairs,
turning around at the bottom. “Are you coming?”

to happen though. The clues are all
