43.
Draco woke up fit to be tied. Literally and figuratively. Awareness came on fast, and with it a fine case of rage. The first thing he registered when he woke up was the freedom the restraints Henry had tied him up with. Yes, he was tied to the ceiling fan. But he could hold his arms out straight, could reach, and partially kick, his feet finding purchase on the floor. Realizing this he stood up and relieved the straining pain from his arms which were holding him up.
Not being the tiniest person in the world, it was a miracle his arms weren't pulled straight out of his sockets.
This freedom of movement confused him. If you’re holding a hostage, you tie them down firmly. These restraints gave him room to move. Situating himself, he saw a broken lamp under his feet. He smelled dried blood. Panic froze him for a second before he found the kitchen table was propped straight up, and on it tied to the four legs of the table was Hermione. Apparently unconscious.
But alive.
Relief was so strong he felt lightheaded. After the initial rush, other things came into focus. Draco ran his eyes frantically over her, cataloguing every hurt and wound inflicted and feeling his temper mounting with each new discovery. It was the ring of red fingerprints around her neck, that really bothered him. Her wrists were tightly bound, but he could tell the rope had nothing to do with their current coloring and swelling. Her hair covered her face, but from he could tell, she was in bad shape. Her breathing was labored, as if she took a good hit and was in pain.
Just then Serpens appeared from behind the table, watching him with a smirk on his face.
“Glad to see you could make it. I’m sorry for the commotion when you arrived, “ Henry gestured to the broken lamp, Hermione bound in front of him, to the bloody cuts on the side of his face. “She likes to get a little rough.” Draco started shaking, furious, and also quite proud that Hermione managed to get in a hit or two.
“Let her go. You have me to do whatever you want with.” Draco ground out.
"But she's the one I want. " He replied simply, running a hand through Hermione's hair. "Not you. You're just in the way."
Draco gritted between his teeth. "Then why am I here?" He wanted to yell at him to stop touching her, but it didn't seem wise while he was trying to bargain with him, or to make him angry while in such close proximity with Hermione.
"Because you’re what she wants. And while you’re alive, I don't have a chance."
Draco snorted. "And you think killing me is going to make her want you instead? Just how far off your rocker did you fall?" He didn't really think that was going to work? Then again, the man had a knife in his one hand. Draco knew that was for him.
Henry sneered back. "Don't worry about that part. She'll be upset, but not for too long. I can be very persuasive."
"Oh, yes. That's how you got her here, persuasion." Draco rolled his eyes, allowing himself a brief second to search for potential weapons. He knew he could release himself with a fair bit of concentration without a wand, but any amount of magic could upset the situation more than help and he didn't know where their wands were.
"Enough of this. Ennervate." Henry woke up Hermione.
Draco could almost hear her mind working furiously on how to respond. Unable to help herself, she met his stare. Bile burned his throat as he evaluated her face. The swelling distorted her features, the dried blood darkening her skin tone. Draco could get lost in the flit of emotion across her face. The dominant feature being relief. She was such a class act. Didn't want to tell him she was in trouble, and then, when he offers to come in and save the day, she worries about him being there. Doesn't she know him better than that? That no matter what trouble she got into, he would always come running?
Hermione came back into reality rather unwillingly. Being knocked out might not have much to recommend it, but it allows for the pain to be locked away. For that, Hermione was grateful. But now she was awake, alert, and in major trouble.
Pulling at the rope, she quickly realized Henry was next to her and she flinched away.
"Now, now dear." Henry murmured, stroking her cheek. Hermione shuddered." Play nice, we have company." Hermione froze. Darting a look in front of her, she locked eyes with Draco. A very alive Draco.
She let out a very choked sob of gratitude. He was alive, it was going to be ok. They’d get out of here somehow. They just needed to get the upper hand for just a spilt second and Henry wouldn't stand a chance.
Then to crush the illusion, Serpens jabbed his wand at Draco. “CRUCIO!”
Draco just managed not to scream as his body was racked with crippling pain. He felt his body spasm and jerk around, but he refused to acknowledge the pain by yelling out. He would not give Serpens the pleasure. The spell, while no means ineffective, had little effect on Draco for the majority. He had had enough experience with that curse. After what seemed to be an extremely long time he realized the curse was over, his body was just convulsing with aftershocks.
The sound came back to his ears and he heard Hermione screaming an amazing assortment of curses at Serpens. Quite a few of them manifested into wandless magic, which Serpens had to dodge, but for the most part Henry was alight with happiness.
“She’s such a spitfire, isn’t she?” He asked Draco while looking at Hermione fondly.
Draco snapped. “Get the fuck away from her.”
Henry looked at Draco, positively giddy, grinning indulgently. He stroked Hermione's cheek, thereby bringing her attention back to him.
Draco had had enough. "If you don't take that hand off of her, you are going to pull back a bloody fucking stump."
Henry merely continued what he was doing. "I do wonder how that is going to be possible. Does this bother you, Malfoy?" Henry taunted, gliding his hand down her cheek, tracing his fingers down her neck. He continued his journey by dusting his fingertips over her collarbone, tracing the outline of her breast, holding her hip intimately.
Henry sighed with pleasure. Hermione did valiantly try to wiggle out of his grasp, but bound as she was, she couldn’t accomplish much. It took a minute for Draco to realize Hermione was mumbling spells under her breath trying to find a weak spot in his constant shielding.
Draco felt his chest heaving with suppressed rage and his powerlessness to stop what was going on. "You have what you wanted. I'm here, leave her the fuck alone and come and get me, you're wasting time!"
“CRUCIO!”
Again, Draco felt the pain laced fire consume his body and he though he was going to chew through his tongue with the effort of not yelling out. It stopped just as suddenly as it began, and Draco clung to his restraints trying to get a decent breath.
Henry sighed. "Manner Malfoy. I know you were raised with them, please remember to use them in our home." Henry leaned in and nuzzled Hermione's ear. Draco couldn't control his emotions enough to focus. All he saw was red, his fury tinting everything in his view. Draco watched as she started panicking. Struggling to free his arms, he pulled at the rope, yelling obscenities. Maybe the plan of hurting him in front of Hermione wasn't the only possibility here. Draco nearly vomited as he thought of Serpens raping Hermione in front of him. "'I'M GOING TO RIP OUT YOUR WORTHLESS SPINE YOU MOTHERFUCKING LUNATIC!"
Henry was reaching for the side zipper on Hermione's dress when Draco snapped. Instantly the bindings fell off his arms and he charged. Hearing the movement behind him, Henry turned in anticipation. That’s when Draco had a flash of intuition. This is what he wanted. Henry wanted Draco so angry he would attack him. The reason why was made painfully clear as the knife flashed in the light. Draco made a split decision and dove to the left.
But he didn't dive fast enough.
Draco felt a slash of pain across his abdomen as he rolled on the floor. Instinctively he flipped onto his back, bracing himself for Henry to follow. Henry gave a swift kick, and Draco felt a whoosh of air leave him as his body recoiled. Another kick left his head snapping back against the floors. Black spots burst in front of his eyes. What felt like a sack of lead sat on his chest. Willing his eyes to focus, Draco realized the knife was no where in sight, but that only meant Henry's fist was. Draco tasted blood sliding down the back of his throat. He felt hands squeezing his throat, depriving him of air.
The only thing running through his mind was Hermione's face.
And air, GET AIR.
Draco put his shoulders and feet firmly against the floor then used all of his strength to bring down his arms against Henry's wrists. It broke Henry's hold and Draco bucked his hips hard enough to dislodge Serpens off of his chest. Draco rolled onto his side, sucking in deep breaths of air that seemed devoid of oxygen, wincing as he found blood coming through his shirt. Draco heard a thud coming from his right and moved just in time to avoid a kick.
Hermione was desperately trying to free herself, and keep track on the fight before her. Dear Merlin, she needed an extra pair of hands...hands. Hermione looked down and the knots in the rope. They were magical knots, to be sure. However, Serpens wasn't in full control at the moment. Taking as deep of a breath as her injured ribs would allow, Hermione focused all her attention on her wrists. Channeling as much magic as she could, the felt the rope give way. Not completely undone, but close enough. Hermione found the table she was tied to was vibrating, and she grabbed it to prevent from falling over.
That was odd.
Reaching for her legs she found, the floor was vibrating. Fleetingly, Hermione knew this wasn't a good sign.
Draco was scrambling to his feet was as Henry came crashing into him, sending him falling into a side table, the pieces of an already broken lamp digging into his back. The pain doubled as his head hit the hardwood. Draco swung wildly, lucky enough to get a solid punch across Henry's jaw. As Henry fell to the side, Draco saw their wands. His thoughts incoherent with relief- he yanked the belt hard, sending them skidding across the floor, landing at the feet of Hermione who was moving towards him to help.
Hermione didn't have time to register the feeling of something hitting her feet. All she saw was Draco, bleeding, pointing at the spot in the living room. She heard him weakly yell ‘Patronus’ before his body started convulsing, a new rush of blood splattering his shirt. Hermione looked around wildly, finally noticing Henry behind a couch, pointing his wand at Draco. "NO!" Hermione took a step in Henry's direction and nearly landed on her ass as her foot rolled over something. Looking down, she spotted two wands.
Then the whole room started shaking. Hermione saw the room take on a gold glimmer, and knew that they were all in trouble. Grabbing both wands, she sent a patronus where Draco had pointed. She prayed Harry got the message. Turning back, she ran full speed at Draco, shooting a disarming jinx at Serpens, who dodged it just in time. Hermione saw the ceiling crack and gold sparks exploding from the windows. Falling to Draco's side, she covered his body with her own.
Then the room erupted in chaos.
