A/N: Regarless of the title, THIS IS NOT THE END! It's the end of multiple things, not the least of which is Year 2... Year 3 will see other things that will be ending. I'm sure a lot of people will understand this.
(43) Endings...
After his time in the chamber, returning to class was a bit anti-climatic. The school seemed painfully unaware of what had happened the night they were sent to their common rooms. Only a few knew what had happened, and while Corvus had no problem keeping it that way, it was disturbing how no one asked questions.
The people involved had their own reactions. The idiot duo seemed quite subdued- Corvus didn't know if it was because of Madam Bones' reaction to their lies or something else, but it was nice to have some peace and quiet for a change.
Ginevra Weasley could be seen glaring at the two Gryffindors quite often and Corvus wondered how much the girl knew about the events of the night. Did she know they stood there instead of helping? That they endangered her life by doing so?
As far as the Professors, it almost felt like they were seeing Corvus for the first time. They would stare at him in class, befuddled looks crossing their faces. When he would catch their stares, Corvus would raise a brow and watch confused as they would smile slightly and nod at him.
Severus was of course the only one who did not act like this. He had known the boy for far too long.
The worst reaction, unsurprisingly, was that of Dumbledore. The old man had come to studying Corvus constantly, his every move being evaluated and recorded for later review. There was a near constant pressure on his Occlumency shields whenever he was around the man. He had told his godfather about this, but the two could do nothing since there was no proof- unless they got the man under veritaserum.
While Dumbledore was the worst, he wasn't the only one studying the young Ravenclaw. It seemed as if the elder Potters also decided to look further into his life.
Corvus did not like all of this attention and couldn't wait for the end of the year. He was used to flying under the radar, even with his stellar grades, but now he was the center of attention.
It was only a week past the chamber incident that the Mandrake drought was finished and those who were petrified were awoken.
Upon her release, Mandy was in tears while being hugged by Morag and Luna. Corvus stood on the side, uncomfortably and waited. He gave the girl a brief hug and smile, knowing that she would soon be asking questions he didn't want to answer.
Sure enough, once they were all settled around Corvus' room, the questions started.
()
Corvus waved his wand at the door and watched as it glowed blue, yellow then red. "How is your Occlumency?" he asked the three girls sitting on the floor in his room.
"What was that?" Morag asked instead.
Corvus raised a brow at his friend and waited for her to figure it out. Luna was looking around the room, a serene look on her face, like always. Mandy was fighting to answer Morag's question, but Corvus shook his head and she continued to fidget.
Not long after the question was asked, Morag smacked her hand into her forehead. "Wards!" The three others let out snorts of laughter. "Yeah, yeah." She muttered at them. "As far as Occlumency, I'm pretty good. I felt the old man testing me while you were away."
"Did he see anything?"
"No. Soon as I felt pressure, I looked away."
"Well done," Corvus replied with a smile.
"Luna how about you?"
"I would need to say hidden, wouldn't I? I know too much. Don't worry Corvus, nothing may be gleaned from my mind."
The three looked at the blonde in shock. It was probably the longest she had spoken at one time. Corvus was probably the only one who understood the undertone of what she was truly saying. Before he could ask if it was okay to let the other two in on their secrets, Luna simply nodded her head and said "You may."
The dark haired boy looked over at his three friends. "Morag knows this already, because Mandy was petrified at the time, and Luna knows some for reason I will let you in on in a minute," he began. "I'm a parselmouth."
Mandy's jaw dropped open, but she didn't look scared or ready to run. "You're afraid people will think you are dark," she whispered softly.
Corvus nodded. "Not only am I a Lestrange, but add on the fact that I'm a parselmouth? They never would have let me out." He watched the girls nod and turned to Luna. "What did you say to me when we first met?" he asked her.
Luna smiled at him, "You are not who you seem to be, Corvus Lestrange." She said in a dreamy voice, head slightly tilted to the side. "First light, then dark, but now gray." Corvus went to open his mouth, but she continued. "I also told you to eat chocolate if you got cold."
The boy's eyes widened and repeated Morag's earlier action of smacking himself in the head. "Well... my memories and emotions were a bit muted as well. You cannot blame me for forgetting." The blonde nodded in agreement. "First off, the reason that sentence means so much. I am a type of Seer. A dream Seer. I often get visions, while I sleep, of events that have yet come to pass. Luna just knows things sometimes. She Sees things that others miss." He looked at his young Ravenclaw friend and smiled at her nod. "First light, then dark, now gray... It's so true, my jaw hit the floor when she said it. You see, I was born into a light family, taken in by the dark Lestrange family, but now consider myself more gray then anything..." He stared into space for a moment, memories flipping through his mind. Mostly James Potter's angry voice and actions.
The three girls looked at one another in worry, so Mandy spoke up. He wanted to tell his story anyway, why not give a push. "Tell us Corvus. What light family were you born into? You look exactly like a Lestrange..."
Corvus cast a silencing bubble around them for extra security. "I was born into the Potter family..."
And he told his story.
()
Hours later, the three friends sat in silence. The three girls processing all the information they were just told.
"So... you were born to the Potters... are a twin to the boy who lived... were neglected and abused and sent away for a brilliant talent they felt was too dark for their family..." Mandy began.
Morag took up the rest, "Taken in by Bellatrix... blood adopted... heir of multiple founders... Geez Cor, it's no wonder you wanted us to know Occlumency!"
"But the old man knows now. After the events in the chamber, he knows I'm a parseltongue. It won't be long now that he will begin digging deeper. He will know and..."
"And what? What can he do? They let you up for adoption and signed all rights away. You were blood adopted which is not possible unless all parties agree. It is unbreakable. Even if you were an infant at the time, if you had disagreed with the adoption at any point, or if your mum changed her mind or became abusive, the magic would fade."
Corvus sat forward, hands clasped in his lap. "Dumbledore is a fearsome wizard," he whispered, unsure of voicing his fears.
"That he is, but so are you. So is your entire family. He cannot touch you Corvus," Morag spoke strongly.
"You must show your memory of the chamber to your Severus," Luna's dreamy voice broke through their conversation. "There is importance in the littlest action."
Corvus nodded and turned back to his friends. They began talking about other things, trying to lift the morose mood that had fallen upon them.
Luna Looked on at her friend sadly. He had lived such a hard life, but there was so much more to go. He was the Prophesied one... even if he didn't know it yet.
()
"Corvus! Corvus Lestrange!" the young Ravenclaw stopped walking and turned to see the youngest Weasley running towards him. It was the last Hogsmeade weekend, so the halls were empty.
"Can I help you?" he asked, not unkindly.
"I... I just wanted," she looked around, unsure of herself. "I just wanted to thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome," he replied and turned to leave again.
"I owe you a life debt." She said to his back.
"I know," he replied, still walking. It was a good thing too, since the smirk on his face would have been worrying.
()
Lucius Malfoy breathed out in relief when he heard about Corvus returning from the chamber. He was upset that Weasley and Potter got off free, but knew there was nothing for it.
It was odd that as the days passed, his head felt like a cloud was being lifted. He was pleasantly surprised when his wife called him to share their bedroom for the first time in 5 months.
"Don't get any ideas," Narcissa told him through narrowed eyes.
Lucius was hurt, but knew he would have to take baby steps. He had messed up, he knew that. He couldn't believe what he had almost said to his nephew!
The boy had yet to speak with him, but with summer coming up the blonde hoped to get back into Harry's good graces.
()
Albus Dumbledore looked on at the leaving feast. He watched the many students, sure to keep the twinkle in his eyes. His eyes scanned over to the Boy Who Lived- or at least the twin he thought was the Boy Who Lived. Lately he was doubting the assessment.
Charlie Potter was less than average in grades and power. Dumbledore knew not to expect too much in the way of grades since the boy was spoiled so much, but it was the child's power he was worried about.
Then again, he was only twelve... Maybe he will grow?
Icy blue eyes moved over to the Ravenclaw table and the boy that seemed determined to cause the old man problems.
Corvus Lestrange
He knew there was something odd about the boy... something a bit darker than most would believe. He had been furious when the boy was given permission to take the Dark Magic courses through correspondence. He had been thrilled when the boy was taken to Azkaban, sure that the culprit had been found, but then the brat was released.
Dumbledore believed that there was a good bit of information missing from Lestrange's description of the events in the Chamber, but the head of the DMLE was happy and wouldn't let him push the inquiry. He grumbled to himself when he remembered being caught outside the girl's bathroom. He couldn't believe he was being blocked from a place within his school! He was the Headmaster! Chief Warlock of the WIzengamot. How dare they think they can keep something from him!
With his thoughts rambling, Dumbledore finally happened upon the specific piece of information that would help with the puzzle.
The boy was a Parselmouth.
He remembered another young boy many years ago who was a parselmouth. He really should have tried to control Tom sooner. Then the young man would not have caused so many problems.
Then came another young boy. The Potter child. What was his name again? Harvey? Harold? Harry?
Harry. Yes. That was the boy's name. Could the young Lestrange be the Potter child? Parselmouths were so rare as it was... what were the chances of 2 being born in the same year? It was worth looking into.
()
James and Lily Potter contemplated what to do about their son. Both were concerned about his horrible grades and nonchalant attitude. That Lestrange child was intelligent. Maybe he would tutor... no. Not in a million years. The bad blood between them would most likely last generations. Especially after the events in the chamber.
Neither would voice it, but they had the same concerns that Dumbledore had. Charlie was not very strong or smart. How was he going to defeat a Dark Lord?
Neither even considered that they once had another son.
()
Corvus Lestrange returned home to a small party for him and Draco. The two boys were top of their year and had much to celebrate.
Like being alive.
He of course got a tongue lashing from his mother for going into danger, Morag or not. "You're not a dumb Gryffindor," she told him.
"Well... I used to be," he said cheekily, "maybe some stupidity stayed behind?"
"The day you are stupid, Corvus Lestrange, is the day I kiss Dumbledore's robes!"
Once the party was over, Corvus, Draco, Severus, Rodolphus, and Bellatrix headed into the sitting room. They called an elf to bring tea and prepared for a long night of talking.
It was time to tell the tale.
"Alright, Corvus, we need the whole story, don't leave anything out," his mother said.
Corvus nodded and began his explanation. He told them about the beginning of the year and hearing the voice, how Véurr recognized it as parseltongue and went searching for the large serpent, and all of the events leading up to Azkaban.
He explained how he heard Potter and Weasley talking about him and that he decided to play along with the plot since he wanted to be sure Morag would also be rescued. "I don't doubt they would have left her there to die," he said.
No one agreed with his idea to risk his life to save another, so they just went past that. "I went down with the idea that as Potter described it, it would happen. I would save Morag and leave the two Gryffindors to the rest. But instead Lockhart decided to show his true colors. Apparently all of his adventures were embellished tales of the accomplishments of other witches and wizards. No one ever came forth because he was quite talented withobliviate."
The anger emanating from his mother could be felt by all the wizards in the room. "He raised a wand at you?" she hissed angrily. "I will tear him limb from limb. That sorry excuse for a wizard is going to wish he never heard of magic..."
The three males just let her rant until she ran out of steam. When he finally found an opening, Corvus cut in, "He tried to obliviate us, but used Weasley's broken wand which backfired on him."
A sad look came over Bellatrix's face, "I wanted to torture him though," she pouted.
Severus and Rodolphus rolled their eyes while Corvus raised a brow. Okay... "When the obliviate backfired, the cave we were standing in caved in, separating me from the wonder boys. Therefore I had to play hero to save Morag.
"Once I was there, I noticed a sort of... form? I don't know. First he said his name was Tom Riddle," here Corvus looked up to see the looks on the faces of his family. Bellatrix and Rodolphus looked confused, but Severus looked shocked. "Right nutter that one is, let me tell you." Severus' lips twitched and his mother's brows drew down.
"He told me that he wanted to speak with Potter to learn how a mere baby had defeated the greatest wizard. I of course, being me, said there was no way that Potter beat Merlin," Bellatrix let out a gasp of disbelief and Severus chuckled a bit. "Anyway, after a long monologue, it eventually came down to him using a diary of some sort to drain Miss Weasley of life and take it for himself. The longer I was there, the more solid he became. Once he set Shasa, the Basilisk on me, Véurr bit the book and the form of Riddle essentially exploded.
"The odd part was, the book screamed as well. A black cloud formed above it before exploding into dust. Figured it was important to mention."
Severus was again the one with the reaction, "Can I see that memory?"
"Of course," Corvus answered immediately. He was shocked to see all three adults sitting pale before him. Instead of asking questions though, he wanted to get through his story. "After that, I spoke with Shasa who told me he wished for death. He really was mad. He was telling me that he wanted to die, then switching to wanting to kill in the same breath." He took a moment to settle himself, "The rest you know."
Bellatrix called a pensieve to her and Corvus gave the memory. He watched on as the three adults entered, and again as they stumbled out pale.
Teal eyes narrowed, "Why do you react that way?" he asked annoyed that there was something they were hiding from him.
Bellatrix and Rabastan exchanged glances.
"Tell him," Severus said, eyes closed and rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"When you did the ritual to hide your aura, there was a large black cloud that escaped you. It was similar, if not identical to what escaped that book," Rabastan explained. "It came from your scar."
"What does that mean? What was it?" he asked confused and concerned.
"We don't know," his mother whispered. "We don't know, but this is another clue."
"I suspect," Severus began, "That when magic was testing you, it also cleansed you. Magic in essence is neutral. It leans neither light nor dark, white nor black. That black cloud was obviously dark magic... but it was more than that. It couldn't have been just magic."
Corvus paled, "It screamed," he said in a horrified whisper.
The three adults nodded and watched as the boy stood and began pacing.
Corvus thought over all that had happened and didn't know what it all meant.
"I'm going to the library," Severus said, and headed out.
Corvus watched his godfather leave with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity.
He knew that Tom Riddle was Voldemort. He knew that destroying the Diary destroyed a piece that the wizard had left behind. Why was there an identical reaction from his scar?
The only connection was Voldemort... so...
Corvus looked on at his mother who was smiling maniacally. He let a smirk grace his face. While he remembered the stories about the Dark Lord going mad and torturing his followers, the sooner the wizard was back in power, the sooner the Potter's could be eliminated. And Dumbledore too.
The smile didn't last long as he remembered the anger of the form. His mother told him that the Dark Lord was charismatic and only went mad after dark rituals... but from what he saw, the man was power hungry, even as a teenager.
Corvus made his decision. He wouldn't participate in the return of the mad man, but if he returned, Corvus would be more than happy to sit and discuss the goals and approach the man wanted to take. He wouldn't follow blindly as Dumbledore's people did. He would ask. He would get the truth and goals and work towards a better society.
He nodded to himself.
Perhaps they had similar goals in mind? Perhaps it was only the methods of achieving those goals that would need changing...
Only time would tell.
A/N: So this chappie took much longer than I thought it would It was very hard to write since it is the end of year 2 and has a lot of transitions or leads into transitions. But I've read it over and over and can't seem to find anything to change. I've already started year 3 and am in love so far ;) I know i'm a tease, but you love me anyway!
Also, I may not reply to every review, but please know, I read each and every one!
So what did you think about this chapter? It's mostly filler information and doesn't show too much of the characters beyond thought processes. The whole Lucius thing will get discussed soon.
As always, thanks for the notes, reviews, and love!
