Evie wonders how she can get Minerva away from her office without letting Severus know she’s coming. She goes to Phineas and tells him what she wants to do, and asks him if he can help. He grins and says he’ll try, wait here.
She waits as he goes back to his portrait at Hogwarts, where Minerva is sitting at her desk, writing. He starts coughing loudly until she looks up at him, and then he mouths silently “Evie. Evie is coming”, and he looks over towards Snape’s portrait. McGonagall nods to him and gets up, going down to the entrance to the Hogwarts grounds.
Phineas goes back and tells Evie that he was successful, and she Apparates to just outside Hogwarts. McGonagall is waiting for her, and they hug; it’s been a long time. Minerva asks her if she’s here to see Snape, a worried look on her face; and she says yes, but she’s also here to see her, too. She smiles reassuringly at McGonagall, who is at least less worried that she’s here in desperation to see Severus.
As they walk, Evie relates her news, that she and Remus are thinking of marrying, and how that came about; and that she wanted to tell Severus herself. McGonagall nods, not sure how that’s going to go; but hoping it will go well. She actually hasn’t had a lot of conversations with Severus herself, as he’s actually not that active a lot of the time. But, she’s sure that hearing Evie’s voice will activate him.
She leaves Evie outside the door to the office, saying the password and then telling her to take as long as she likes, she’ll be in the Great Hall and hopes Evie will come find her there, after. Evie gives her a quick hug and says that she will, and then goes up the stairs into the office.
She sees Phineas’s and Dumbledore’s portraits first (looking quickly at them since she had already known where they were) and both of them wink at her. She then finds Severus’s, and it looks just like she’d imagined it; stern and commanding. She looks at it for a long moment and then softly says his name…and he blinks, and then sees her, and a slow smile spreads across his face as he breathes, “…Evie…”. She smiles back at him and they just look at one another for a long time, love shining in their eyes.
He says, “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too, Severus; you can’t imagine how much. I love you.”
“I know, dearest. And I love you, too.”
They talk about Albus for a moment and she tells him what a sweet-tempered child he is, and Severus laughs and says obviously, he got that from her. Finally he says that he’s pretty sure she’s not just here to give him updates, and she lowers her eyes and nods, and then looks up and tells him that Remus and Teddy have been living at the house since the last battle, and that now they are thinking of getting married.
He smiles down at her and says nothing for a moment, just letting her see that he loves her. Finally he says, “I can’t say that it’s completely unexpected. Nor can I say that the thought of you being with anyone else is particularly a happy one. But – I meant what I said to you, he is a good man. And besides that, you left me in no doubt of where your heart was, and would always be. The fact that you’re here now is just more proof of that.” At this she tears up, and he smiles gently at her, in recognition that he can see that nothing has changed, that she still loves him deeply and completely.
He goes on after a moment, saying, “I know, dearest. You still have a life to live, and I cannot give you the things you need, nor the things that our son needs. Much as I might wish to…” and he trails off with a raised eyebrow and an echo of the wicked grin that he gave her the night he used the partial immobility spell on her; she blushes and smiles through her tears.
His smile turns gentle again and he says, “Until we are together again, if there has to be someone else in your life - and it would be no life at all for you if there is never anyone else in it - I cannot think of anyone I’d rather it be, than Remus. He knows what we had and he respects it, and I know what he had as well; that understanding passed without any question between us, that day in the kitchen.” She nods, relieved, and looks her gratitude back at him, while he looks at her lovingly.
Finally, as much as she’d like to stay there all day and talk with him, she says she should go, and he nods; but she turns back after a moment, with a quizzical look, and says, “I do have one other question. Where did you get that photo of me?”
He laughs and actually looks a bit embarrassed, and says, “I think it’s one that Colin Creavey took.” She nods, remembering Colin being photo-mad, carrying his camera everywhere and taking pictures of everything and everyone.
He says that after Potions class one day, he’d found a stack of photos (of various things and people, he didn’t actually look at more than just the top few of them and hadn’t seen the one of her) at the desk where Colin had been sitting, and he’d put them in his podium to return to him at the next class. He had given the stack back to him, and only discovered a few weeks later (when searching for a new ink pot) that the photo of Evie had somehow slipped out of the stack.
He says, “Apparently Colin hadn’t noticed it was missing either, or else he was just too afraid to come ask me for it back, I’m not sure which. So I just…kept it. I liked the look he’d captured on your face, like you were looking into the future, confident and unafraid. And then later…I liked having a picture of you when we couldn’t be together. I could imagine that the future you were looking into was our future, together.”
She smiles and says, “I wish I had been. I wish I’d seen it much earlier than I did. I still regret the time we could have spent together, if I had.”
He smiles back and says, “It doesn’t matter. It’s a shame that we didn’t have more time, but the real tragedy would have been if we’d never had it at all.”
She is touched and agrees, and then reluctantly moves to go, and he tells her softly, again, that he’ll be waiting for her when her time comes; and she touches her fingers to her lips and then towards him, and says that she will be glad when their lips can finally meet again.
As she’s going, she turns back at the door with a smile and tells him not to be too hard on Albus when he comes to school here, if he gets sent to the Headmaster’s office; bad enough to face the disapproval of the Headmaster, but he’ll of course know his father is there watching as well. He smiles and nods, and with a final exchange of love with him, she goes off to the Great Hall to find McGonagall.
Minerva looks worried when Evie finds her, but with one look at Evie’s face she is relieved. Evie nods and says that it’s fine, and she hopes that Minerva will come to the wedding; provided there is one of course, they haven’t even gotten that far yet. McGonagall smiles and says she wouldn’t miss it.
Evie returns to Grimmauld Place, and Remus is waiting, more than a little anxious and trying to hide it. Now that he’s come to the same realization that Evie had, he knows that he doesn’t want to lose her; and he’s afraid that seeing Severus might have changed her mind.
But he is relieved as she smiles when she finds him, touching his face and telling him what Severus said. He holds her, and then says they’re only lacking one thing, now. He drops to one knee and says, “Evie Potter – will you marry me?” She pulls him back up and tells him of course she will, and he laughs and hugs her again. When he lets go, he tilts her face up and looks into her eyes very seriously, and tells her that he loves her, and she tells him that she loves him, too.
He bends to kiss her; and as always, she just melts into him. They’re both aroused by the kiss, but they’ve agreed to wait to be together until it’s official; not because they think there’s any particular reason they need to wait (other than that it does make things somewhat less awkward as far as the children are concerned), but because they know it will make it just that much better.
[Author's Note: will probably stop here for a bit, there's still some things I want to revise a bit before moving forward. Not sure how much farther I plan to take the story, there's a few more chapters written but it could pretty easily end with them. I guess it'll let me know itself when it's done.]
