“Come on,” Draco urged, grabbing Hermione’s hand and hauling her out of the cage. “We’ve got four more to go. You okay?”
“Yeah,” she said, finally able to speak. “Yeah.”
Each step eased some of the fear and released adrenaline. She went from being pulled to almost dragging Draco to the next cage. Before he could react, she took the mirroring spell off and froze. There was no snake. At least, she didn’t see one. The tape was still playing the recording of Harry’s parseltongue but nothing stirred.
“Where is it?” she breathed.
“Check the next one,” he said, taking the spell off of the third cage.
The mirroring disappeared to see a tiny five foot snake slithering along the glass. She nodded and held the sword aloft, waiting for Draco to shield her so she could open the cage. As soon as the door opened, she barged inside and stabbed the small creature. A pang of sadness shot through her as it twitched and died. It was just a baby.
“Hey.”
She started and spun, almost slicing Draco’s sternum. She’d been zoned out thinking about the life she’d snuffed out. “It was a baby.”
He nodded grimly. “But living in a lab is no place for any animal and Basilisks were created from Dark magic, not a natural species. They can’t be domesticated. They have no natural habitat. What exactly were we supposed to do with it?
She nodded. “You’re right. I just…”
“I know,” he sighed. “Still Gryffindor beneath all that cynicism.”
She rolled her eyes. “Come on. Let’s check the last cage before we go searching around in the other.”
The fourth cage contained a fine specimen around fifteen feet in length. It tasted the glass and the air around the door, trying to find some way to get to the person who could speak with it. Hermione steeled herself to take it on. Draco took the spell down and shielded her as she stepped inside. The snake immediately recoiled, striking a mere moment later. She ducked and its fangs hit the shield in front of her. She couldn’t get a good angle on it though and side stepped to try and draw it back.
“What do you need?” Draco yelled as he threw another shield to block the snake from lashing him with its giant tail.
“A clear shot,” she yelled back, swiftly jumping over the middle of the snake. “I couldn’t get under its jaw and I don’t exactly want to dive inside its mouth.”
In the next few moments, Hermione silently thanked Snape for pushing them to start physical training. She still needed more but she would have been spent after the third jump. Adrenaline was starting to pump again but she was thankful for the stamina. She’d push Draco for two a day workouts after this.
She slid under a coil of snake and rolled to a crouch, thrusting the sword up above her head. Draco had managed to throw enough distracting spells to get the snake looking up. The sword pierced the bottom of the snake’s jaw and popped through the scales. Its head came slamming down with a force that was shocking. She felt the sword poke through the top of the snake just as a piercing pain struck her arm. The heft of the snake fell on her, pinning her underneath.
“Son of a bitch,” Draco snapped as the snake collapsed. “It got you.”
Hermione was gritting her teeth against the pain to keep from crying out. The combination of the weight of the snake combined with the intense feeling of lava flowing through her veins was enough to make her want to faint but she couldn’t do that. She’d had worse. Much worse. She kept chanting it over and over as she tried to struggle out from under the beast. Suddenly, the weight was gone and her arm extended all the way, causing a spark of pain so sharp her vision went black.
“Easy,” Draco cooed, pulling her to a sitting position. “Let’s heal that.”
She held still while he carefully administered a few drops of phoenix tears into the gash in her forearm. It didn’t look bad at all, especially compared to the damage the vipertooth inflicted. Still, it hurt like hell. They both watched in silence as the wound healed itself and neither moved for several minutes afterwards, giving the tears a chance to repair the damage to her veins. Draco finally put the vial away and helped her to her feet.
“That was close,” he said softly.
“There has got to be a better way,” she murmured.
“Too bad we couldn’t find a rooster,” he growled as he walked with her back to the second cage.
“It has to be a live crow,” she said despondently. “Recordings wouldn’t work and you can’t exactly train one to crow on demand. Besides, it would probably die of a heart attack if it saw one of these bastards.”
He sighed and nodded. “Still. I don’t like you having to wield that thing.”
“You can try.”
“I’m not taking any chances of that sword disappearing.”
He had a point. Only a true Gryffindor could call it, though she didn’t think it would necessarily disappear if a person from a different house wielded it. After all, Snape had kept it for months until he set it at the bottom of a lake for Harry and Ron to find. Then again, it had immediately responded when Neville had need for it. She bit her lip and raised her wand to open the door to the second cage. Hopefully no one would have need of the sword in the next little while.
Draco raised a shield and motioned her forward. “Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”
She squared her shoulders and marched forward, keeping the sword in her hand. When nothing immediately sprang, she slowed her steps. Where could the thing have gone? Was it possible that it had already died? Maybe it was even smaller than the baby she’d killed. If that was the case, they’d have to step carefully. Even a tiny basilisk was deadly.
“Keep a sharp eye,” she instructed. “Not sure how big this one is.”
“Good thinking,” he murmured, casting a light spell overhead to aid them in their search. “Maybe we should blast all the vegetation to make it easier to search.”
“That might bring out an attack. Or it could cause it to go further into hiding.”
“Either way, we need an easier path.”
She nodded and started casting shrinking spells at the vegetation. The scales of the basilisk would protect it against any ordinary spell. Draco uprooted the trees and turned them into stakes to mark the area they’d covered while she shrank the shrubbery. It was slow and grueling work, requiring concentration, large amounts of magic, and patience. Moving too fast could prove deadly but they only had until sundown. What time was it anyway?
“Tempus!” she snapped, displaying a clock.
“Fuck,” Draco muttered. “It’s already three. Sundown is coming a lot quicker than I’d imagined.”
“Haggling with the shopkeeper cost us some time.”
He snorted. “Bloody bastard. We really do need to set up shop next to him and drive him out. Anyway, we’ve got to find this little fucker so we can move on to finding the big one.”
She sighed and shot a spell that burned every shrub and tree within 5 feet of them. “What if this is a big fucker?”
“Then it doesn’t have much more space to hide in,” he said, motioning to the small amount of the cage they hadn’t covered yet.
She had to admit that he was right. There was only a square about thirty feet in the back that they hadn’t leveled. If it was in there, it wasn’t as big as the one that was loose. Still, that didn’t mean that it wasn’t coiled up in there.
“Stand back.”
She jumped when Draco sprang forward and shot a spell that almost singed the hair off of her arms. She hadn’t expected him to throw a white flame. It would consume everything that was left, save for the snake. She hadn’t used it before because it was exceedingly draining but she supposed they really did need to speed things up. There was no telling how long it would take to locate these last two snakes and they were running out of time. After about two minutes, he hit it with a blast of icy cold water, effectively dousing the flame. All that was left was a blackened patch of ground… and a hole wide enough that they could shimmy down.
“Son of a bitch,” Draco muttered. “It burrowed out. How in the hell did it do that?”
She shrugged. “Snakes don’t exactly have arms and I doubt it could have made that with its mouth or tail. Do you think someone else has been in here?”
“Wards were still sealed,” he said, walking over and inspecting the hole. “We’ll need to figure out where this goes.” He lit his wand and stuck it inside. “Can’t see the bottom. We’ll need to be careful.”
“How should we do this?” she asked, digging through her bag for some inspiration. “We might both need our wands.”
He frowned and looked around for a moment before sighing. “Got any rope?”
She looked up in shock. “Beg pardon?”
“You heard me,” he growled. “We need our wands so we can’t use a levitation spell or anything that will require constant concentration. There are a few rocks we could anchor to and I buried those stakes pretty deep if we need extra support. I say we tie the rope to the rocks and stakes to make some sort of pulley and place a sticking charm on it. Then we tie the other end to ourselves and go down.”
She rubbed her chin and studied the layout of the anchors for a moment. “The anchor will work but it’s going to take a lot of work to build a pulley and tension system.”
“Can you transfigure one?”
She nodded. “But animating it is going to be a bitch. I don’t have the proper cogs and springs to make it lower properly.”
“Well, transfigure it first. I’ll see what I can do.”
Hermione took a few odds and ends out of her purse, a set of metal muggle stress balls, some bracelets, and a hook and transfigured them into a rock climbing apparatus. Then she handed it to Draco and explained how it should work and what they were missing. He studied it for a few minutes and began tapping various parts with his wand, listening to the hum of magic for a moment before tapping again. After several minutes, he had cracked the spell and created a mechanism that would magically lower them at a steady pace without needing a counterweight and a second one to control the tension in their ropes. He set about tying the rope in knots.
Hermione fiddled with another knot until she couldn’t stand the silence any longer. “Where did you learn how to create items using magical theory and wavelength tones?”
Draco smirked and tied a few more knots. “Dark Arts. Most dark magic is based on will, magical strength and purity, and the like.”
“Why is that, I wonder?”
“My guess is that while regular magic can transfigure and conjure from particles and elements already in use, Dark Arts manipulate space and nothingness into being. It’s true creation. But since true creation doesn’t follow Gamp’s laws, the magic becomes twisted… dark. But even light magic creates wavelength tones. Have you ever noticed the hum in Hogwarts on a particularly quiet day?”
She tilted her head and snorted at her revelation. “I dismissed it.”
“Not many people notice them. Most magical children are so used to it they don’t take any heed. I noticed more than one muggleborn stopping and tilting their head trying to figure out what the sounds were. But not you…”
She shrugged. “I noticed it but I just figured that it was unique to Hogwarts and didn’t concern myself with it. And I might have not wanted to look like an idiot in case it was something everyone else knew.”
He shook his head and gave rope a final tug. “When we graduate, I’ll have to take you to some of the more ancient magical sites. Egyptian tombs are so loud that you might want earplugs.”
“Look forward to it,” she said earnestly as she tested the rope and started backing towards the hole so Draco could set the tension.
The thought of traveling was rather appealing. Draco would be a great companion. While she still loved her friends dearly, they just weren’t on her level intellectually… or emotionally. Draco was just as fucked up as she was and she took comfort in the fact that she wasn’t the only broken one after the war. Traveling with him would be an adventure, one she was looking forward to.
“Ready?” Draco called.
She jumped and forced herself to focus before nodding and leaning backwards. He made a few adjustments and had her try again. This time, she felt the rope hold her but give slightly as well. She should be able to repel nicely.
“That should do it,” she called.
“On three then,” he said. “One. Two. Three.”
Hermione took a deep breath, stuck her wand in her mouth, and jumped into the hole backwards. She keep her knees tucked and her feet up so she could make contact with the wall every four or five feet down. It was difficult to see with the light so close to her face so she stopped her decent and stuffed her wand into her side pocket, muttering a small sticking charm to make sure she didn’t lose it. It would be too hard to summon it back to her if the hole was very deep.
“How does it look?” he called.
“Bottomless,” she yelled back and leaned to the side to examine the walls. “The walls are smooth though, almost like this was a magically made hole.”
“You don’t think that the partner did this, do you?”
“Not sure,” she called back, still examining the walls. “There are a few marks though, maybe scales?”
“I’m going to start in behind you. Let me know if you touch ground.”
“Okay. Just go slow,” she warned.
She repelled down further, trying to estimate how far she’d gone. Twenty, maybe thirty feet? The air felt thinner but there was still no end in sight. Another ten feet or so and she could hear an echo of dripping water. Had they hit some sort of well? She worried that she should have brought her swimsuit when she heard a snap and a curse.
“Draco?” she called.
“My rope is fraying,” he called in between muttered spells. “Must have gotten into a sharp rock or something.”
“Can you hold it?” she called worriedly. “I think I’m getting close to the bottom. I hear water.”
“I’m try-“
Her heart leapt into her throat when she heard him cry out in shock. Boot scuffles echoed through the space and then a heavy weight fell on top of her. Her rope slid so quickly she could smell it burning but she managed to maneuver Draco around to hold on with her. He had one arm locked around her waist, his legs twined with hers, and his other arm grabbing onto the rope. They hung precariously a few minutes, breathing heavily.
“Fuck,” Draco shouted just as her rope snapped.
Draco made a desperate grab for the rope but it was no use. They went plummeting down the hole. He shouted a dozen different levitating charms but nothing seemed to be working. It didn’t even make a dent. Finally, he locked his arms around her and spun them around to take the brunt of the fall. They landed with a bone jolting thud and a wet splash. Hermione’s vision blurred and the dimly lit cavern they’d just landed in went dark.
AN: Well, I finally got this chapter wrestled out. Sorry this is taking forever. My schedule just keeps piling up and my muse decided it was a perfect time for a vacation.
