LEECH
Chapter 44
Severus swallowed hard as he mulled over what he’d read, and when Kathy returned with a tray of tea his eyes never left her.
Even as she passed him his cup and offered the plate of biscuits and he accepted them, his eyes remained on her.
After watching her squirm uncomfortably for a short while, he spoke.
I find your annotations most interesting. You have gone into great detail, at the same time keeping you observations detached, precise, and concise. I am err… particularly interested in your theory as regards me. It seems I was remiss in not giving you my full attention before supper this evening. Shall we make our first attempt on Friday evening, providing I am not otherwise engaged that is.”
Severus was still waiting for the Dark Lord to summon him, he’d been expecting it since the night of the ball and was surprised he had not been summoned before now.
Kathy knew what he was referring to and nodded. She hated to think of him putting on that mask and cloak and going to see that… she couldn’t think of what she’d witnessed in the pensive as Tomtom. Not after what he’d done, after he’d taken away her babies in such a cruel way. She was still coming to terms that Tomtom and that… thing, were one and the same.
“Friday’s fine.” She said softly.
Severus decided not to comment at the moment to the more… revealing aspects of her notes. Instead he made a suggestion. “Albus wishes us to be seen in public on occasion, I wonder if you would like to accompany me to Hogsmead on Saturday afternoon.”
“Hogsmead, that’s the wizarding town isn’t it, where the students go?”
“It is, though they will not be in attendance this weekend. It will be just you and I.”
“I’d love to go Severus. I’ve read about it in some of the books you and Albus gave me and it sounds an interesting place.”
“It is, though I admit much of it’s appeal has been lost to me over the years. Still, introducing you to something so unique will definitely increase it’s charm. Perhaps we could share lunch at the Three Broomsticks, if that does not get us noticed, I don’t know what will.”
“Such a touching invitation.” She said dryly. The she smiled. “Lunch out sounds good. After what, six months? Of being holed up here it’ll be nice to get out and see something other than stone walls.”
“Such a touching acceptance, I will look forward to it.” He replied, equally dryly, but with a grin.
Kathy could hardly wait for the weekend. She was beginning to wonder if ’outside’ still existed. First though, there was Friday’s experiment to get through.
Severus was uniformly enthusiastic, curious, and slightly intimidated about the outcome of the approaching Leech of his magic. If something went wrong he didn’t know if he would survive life as a squib. At the same time he was keen to know how it felt to have his magic enhanced, if only for the short term. It would be just his luck to be summoned once he was drained and then discover she couldn’t replace his power. Hell, the thought of it was enough to almost make him want to back out of the experiment.
As soon as Supper was over on Friday, Severus escorted Kathy up the main stairwells, much to the intense interest of the many students on their way to the common rooms. They had just entered the ROR, and this time it was Kathy who walked the corridor and made the door appear after Severus told her to concentrate on what she required the room to be. Albus arrived ten minutes later, surprised to find himself in a replica of Kathy’s rooms. Clearly it was where she felt most comfortable.
As with the others, Kathy stroked Severus’ hand, then laid her hand on his, concentrating on the Leeching.
“Nothings happening.” She stated a minute later.
“Perhaps if you concentrate more.” Severus suggested.
“I am concentrating.”
“Then try harder, you’ve had enough practice.”
Kathy tried again, and again nothing happened.
“So much for your dissertation.” He snarked, more from disappointment that he wasn’t going to have his powers enhanced.
“Oh shut your gob. You didn’t say that when you read it.” Kathy was getting angry with him.
Albus watched interestedly as they continued to snipe at each other.
“Face it, it is not going to happen.” Severus finally said. “This whole exercise was a waste of my time.”
“Your time? You aren’t the only one in this room you know. Of all the arrogant, stuffed up selfish prats I’ve ever met, you take the bloody biscuit you do.”
“How dare you? And I am none of those things, just face it, you cannot Leech me and that’s and end to it.”
“Who says I can’t? Bloody well sit back down.” She commanded, her eyes flashing angrily.
Severus was about to retort and tell her where to go, but a look from Albus made him decide to give it one last go. “This is your final attempt, I will not waste any more time on this ridiculous… can you feel that?”
Kathy’s anger was at such a peak that she’d simply grabbed his hand and wished with everything she possessed that she could Leech his magic away. Now she could feel it entering her, filling her veins, making her stronger.
Suddenly she realised that Severus was slumped in the chair and pulled her hand away sharply.
“Oh God Severus. Severus wake up.” She cried, taking hold of his shoulders and shaking him. His head flopped about lifelessly on his shoulders. “No. Don’t be dead Severus. You can’t be dead. Please.”
“He’s not dead Kathy, simply exhausted. It seems my theory that you need a good deal of emotion behind you before being able to Leech from someone you care for very deeply.”
“What? Albus look at him, of course he’s dead. Are you sure he’s not dead? Oh hell, I went too far.”
“Nonsense, watch.” Albus produced the usual bottle of Pepper-Up potion from his pocket and trickled it into the Potion Masters mouth.
“Am I meant to feel as though I’ve been hit by several bludgers?” He asked on opening his eyes. “The bottle Albus.”
After taking a good swig from the bottle Severus felt almost human again.
“What the hell did you take from me?” He asked. “I thought you could not… “
“It would seem Severus, that Kathy must feel emotionally charged before her power has any affect on you.”
Severus eyed the old wizard, then turned his gaze to Kathy, amazed to see wet cheeks and teary eyes. “Why are you crying? Did something go badly wrong?”
“I thought you were dead, you wouldn’t wake up.” She sobbed.
“Well I am awake now, so tell me, what do you feel?”
“Do you really want me to tell you that Severus?”
“Perhaps not.” He removed his wand and tried to cast a spell. “I feel most uncomfortable about this. I feel nothing, no surge of magic, no rush of energy as I try to cast. Absolutely nothing, and I do not like it.” He said, frowning. “Give it back. Will it be necessary to make you angry again before it will work?”
Kathy wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her jumper. He anger dissolved as soon as she thought she’d killed him and she didn’t ever want to feel that way again. “I hope not. Give me your hand Severus.” She said softly, a small hitch in her breath every so often when she spoke. “I was… you scared me when you wouldn’t wake up.”
Severus felt an odd sense of satisfaction that she cared so much about whether he lived or died. He took her hand gently and waited.
The rush of his magic pouring back into him was the most amazing thing he’d ever experienced. No wonder the others all volunteered to be used again, it was almost akin to an orgasm. But only almost. “Gods! I didn’t realise, does it affect you this way when you take it?” He asked her.
“It depends on what you feel Severus, tell me.”
“I ah… erm… no.” He finished adamantly. “But I will tell you that I feel much more powerful than I did before I was Leeched. Amazingly so.” Severus looked at Albus from the corner of his eye. The old codger was smiling.
“I felt it also when she returned my magic that night on the grounds. Incredible is it not.”
“Is one of you gonna tell me what you’re talking about?”
“No.” They replied in unison.
