Draco could only make out various shapes and sounds. The explosions going off in spectacular colors kept illuminating the room otherwise filled with darkness. He felt a warm body pressed over his. "Hermione?" He croaked.
"Draco, just hold on. I sent the patronus. But I can't make anything out." Hermione whispered. "I don't know where Serpens is." She admitted in a shaking voice.
Draco made to sit up, and felt Hermione push him back down. "No, no! Don't move, it'll just make things worse."
"Make what worse? We need to get out of here. Where's Potter? That patronus should have led him right to us." Draco whipped his head around, realizing the room was slowly breaking down.
"Draco, you've lost a lot of blood, and I don't know what spell Serpens hit you with, but it's not good." It occurred to Draco that Hermione might be laying on him for more than protection. Like, trying to keep pressure on his wounds so he didn't bleed out.
Draco looked up and saw a brief glimpse of Hermione's face as another fake window collapsed and burst into nothingness. He lifted his hand to brush her cheek; trying to ignore how much effort it took him. "Look at me." Hermione was fidgeting with his shirt, ripping off pieces to stanch the blood coming off the wound. " Draco, I don't know if we can disapparate out of here..."
"Look at me." He said firmly. Another streak of color illuminated her face as her eyes connected with his. "This is not the way I had this planned, but I feel I should say it."
Hermione's jaw set. " Don't you dare give me the goodbye speech! We are getting out of here, alive."
"Herm-"
Hermione leaned forward and gave him a hard kiss. "I said no."
Hermione's head jerked to the side when she noticed flashes of light. But it wasn't like the rest of the room. These were spells. Someone was dueling. Help was here. "You just need to hold on a little while longer, Draco. Harry is here. Just a little longer." Draco felt her brushing his hair away from his face.
Slowly Hermione watched as the duel came closer to her and Draco. She sat up, her wand extended.
"Hermione..." she heard whispered.
"It's ok, just being careful. Don't move." Hermione ran her wand in a series of wiggles down his torso, tracing his wounds it felt like, murmuring. Draco felt marginally better. Hermione ran a hand across his forehead. "Just a little patchwork until we get out of here. We're going to have to apparate."
As the duel came even closer, Hermione could feel the room shaking, not vibrating. There was too much magic.
"Mione, you need to get out. It's too dangerous."
"I'm not leaving here without you. And we can't apparate without Harry and the other aurors. I'm not sure the room could take it." The blood was still seeping through his shirt. Hermione made a quick decision, gave Draco a quick kiss, and cast an altered version of pertificulous totalas on him. Effectively freezing his body until they could leave.
He was going to hate her for that.
Hermione cast a flare spell. Illuminating the area around her, she then froze the flare mid-flight to gauge what was going on. Just those two spells collapsed a wall to their left. It was a huge risk, but Hermione could now see what was going on. Harry and two other aurors were dueling...Oliver Stanely? But then where was Serpens?
At first, Hermione's mind seemed incapable of connecting the information in front of her. Did Stanely apparate in? Or was that Henry with polyjuice again? Feeling Draco's fingers twine in her hair, she looked down questioningly, only to realize he was frozen. So that hand wasn't his...
Wrenched upright, she felt Serpens left arm secure her around her waist. "Kitten, I was worried they took you away without our goodbye."
Hermione might have felt powerless before, but certainly not now. Casting a burning hex, she felt her clothes heat up, but it didn't touch her. Serpens let out a yelp and dropped her. Her ankle wasn't too happy, but she managed to catch her balance. Turning to stand in front of Draco's body, she leveled her wand at him. "Henry, please, just think. I know you're not this person! Look at me! Open your eyes and see what you’ve done! You don't kill or kidnap or hurt innocent people! What in the hell has gotten into you?!" Non-verbally, Hermione unfroze Draco. If she was taken, Draco was going to need to be able to call for help.
Serpens glared at her. Hermione lowered her wand a little. "Please, Henry, think! What is going on? You can tell me, we can figure you a way out of this."
Henry for a moment looked confused, his gaze darting right and left. He locked his sight on Hermione and she saw a flicker of disbelief, followed quickly by mortification. It appeared to Hermione that she may have gotten through to him. Eagerly she moved backwards until she felt Draco with her foot. She felt his hand grab her ankle. Watching Henry, Hermione saw him cringe, and with a twitch of the head, he raised his wand, madness showing plainly on his features. Whatever normal response she had briefly witnessed wasn't strong enough to stay.
Unbeknownst to Serpens, Draco also had his wand, and though weak, he was still able to muster a sizable amount of anger to perform a disarming spell.
As Serpens wand crashed to the ground, the dueling group came upon them full force. Absolute pandemonium reigned. Hermione crouched down by Draco, firing spells and protecting the both of them from unseen opponents. In the midst of it all, Harry found her. Leaning down, he told her in thirty seconds to disapparate. Looking at Draco, Harry grabbed his shoulder. "Did you hear what I said? Twenty-five seconds! I'll shoot up a purple flare and then everyone needs to leave at the same time, otherwise no one is going to leave here alive!"
Draco felt a warm hand sneak into his. Hermione raised their intertwined hands to her lips and held it against her cheek. The purple flare went up behind her, casting a colored halo behind her head. Draco knew it was the one image of her he would never forget.
"Now, nice and easy." Hermione heard vaguely. Struggling, Hermione started to freak out. She felt the pain radiating from her body. Her wrists were bound. Oh, no, where was Draco? Where was she? Was Serpens holding her down?
"Let go of me! DRACO!" Hermione screamed, her eyes opening to see blackness.
"Hermione, I love you. You are like a sister to me. But please for the love of Morgana, shut the hell up." said in a sickly sweet voice in the darkness.
Hermione abruptly stopped moving. "Ginny?"
"The one and only." Hermione heard murmured. Suddenly, a wand tip full of light stole through the darkness. Ginny walked closer and sat on the edge of the bed. "About time you woke up. I was getting rather bored hearing Draco moan your name in his sleep."
Hermione grabbed her hand. "He's ok, right? Where is he?"
Ginny gave a tiny smile. "He'll be ok. He's lying on the other side of the curtain. They had to sedate him. He thought you weren't receiving a proper amount of attention, all while refusing healers to help him and the massive amount of blood dripping onto the floor. "
Hermione let out a sigh of relief, ignoring her protesting ribs. She was quite for a moment, trying to process that she was safe. Collecting the last memories before she had ended up here. Draco was safe. Serpens...
Hermione spoke so fast the words tripped up coming out of her mouth. "And what happened to Harry? Is he ok? The other aurors? Henry? Where is he? Did they get him? I can't remember..."
Ginny gave her hand a squeeze. "Calm down. Everyone is ok. Draco will heal, Serpens is in custody, and the main concern is you."
"Me? I feel -ouch." Hermione had tried to sit up.
Ginny gently pushed her shoulders back down. "You have quite a road to travel until you're better." Ginny gestured to the restraints. "You weren't very compliant initially. They needed to keep you down."
Hermione looked at her grimly. "Alright. I promise to hold still. Go ahead. Give me the run down."
Ginny sighed. "The magic used in the apartment is what is causing all the issues. The magic in that room was more serious than anyone had realized. Drum roll please, you have: Broken ribs, wrist, and ankle, some ugly bruising on your neck and face, a nasty concussion. Some cuts and abrasions are going to take longer to heal. Everything created in that room was tainted with that dark magic, and by being cut by objects infected with it therefore made your cuts infected with it. The healers, fortunately, realized this before they treated you. Some healing spells would make the situation worse, rather than better.”
Hermione nodded her head. She would heal. It was over. Hermione felt her throat close up. She was really safe and sound. “Ginny, later, I want to speak more about how everything went down, and just how in the hell you found me. But right now, I just want to say thank you. For everything you’ve done.”
Ginny smiled. “Like I would have done anything differently? Please, you can’t get away from me that easily.” Ginny patted her shoulder, the one small part of her not in a lot a pain. “ Besides, unless I’m very much mistaken, Draco and Harry deserve most of the credit. I just supervised.” They sat there a while, Hermione asking questions about how long she was knocked out, what was going on with Henry. Ginny refused all questions. “Harry can explain it better than I can, preferably when you’re not high on potions and when there is sun outside your window. Let’s just say that the people responsible for the attack are in jail. The trial will be in a couple months, it will be confidential as far as Harry can get it. Right now, not many people know what has happened. You just need to relax and get better.”
Hermione opened her mouth to explain she couldn’t relax until she had all the details, but Ginny diverted her attention. “I need your help in doing something rather sneaky.”
Hermione cocked her head to the side, confused by the abrupt change of subject. “What do you mean?”
Ginny sat on the edge of the bed. “As soon as you’re healed, we need to have my wedding, in secret.”
Hermione struggled to follow. “ But you’re wedding is already set for the spring.” It was about three months from now.
Ginny looked at her intensely. “Yes, we’re going to keep the public wedding. There are too many high profile people already invited. But I need a small, secret ceremony as soon as possible. Kind of like an elopement.”
Hermione was beginning to suspect she was missing something incredibly obvious. “But why?”
Finally surpassing her limit on patience, Ginny threw up her hands. “Because by the time my public wedding rolls around I’ll already be showing.” And just in case Hermione still couldn’t figure it out, Ginny put two hands on her stomach.
Forgetting her recent promise to not move, Hermione struggled to sit up. “YOU’RE PREGNANT! SHIT- OW!” Gasping in pain, Hermione fell back into her bed.
“I told you not to move! And could you scream it any louder?” Ginny reprimanded her, checking her bandages for blood.
“Well, hell Gin, you couldn’t have thought of a better way to tell me?” Hermione grumbled, still grinding her teeth as the pain ebbed away. Finally composing herself, she opened her eyes to Ginny, still fussing over her.
“Gin, really? I’m going to be an aunt?”
Ginny smiled. “Yes.”
“Is it Harry's?” she asked sternly.
She surprised a giggle out of Ginny. “Very funny. Yes, Harry is the father. And yes, he knows.”
Hermione didn’t think her smile could get any bigger. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?! How far along are you?”
Ginny looked down at her hands covering her belly. “It’s early, yet. I wanted to tell you so much, but then you had to go get kidnapped and ruin all of my plans. Not to mention your life got so complicated and I just felt like it wasn’t the time. Then there was the shock. This took me quite by surprise.”
“Well, I’ll plan your second, er, first wedding as soon as I can. But people can count Ginny.”
Ginny snorted. “I couldn’t care less about the public. We all know Bill was born seven months after mum’s wedding. But a small wedding is what I want…and of course the confidentiality clause can stop the release of our actual ‘elopement’ date.”
Hermione nodded, and felt her head throb. Ginny noticed. “I’m going to send in the healers to give you a check up and more potions for the pain, and I have a couple owls to send to let everyone know you’re ok. Get some sleep. I shouldn’t have put all of this on your shoulders so soon. Harry told me not to.”
Hermione grinned. “Like that ever stopped you.”
Ginny gave her a kiss on her cheek and squeezed her hand. “Exactly.”
