Snorting at what he was seeing in the yard, Lucius shook his head then began to peruse the papers Black brought over again. “I don't think Black realizes that as big as Harry is now, despite him being thin, he's not going win at wrestling around with him. Harry now has too much height and leverage on him. Not to mention youth on his side.” He observed, tone completely amused.
“Oh, yes,” Severus told him, looking smug. “He's used to the smaller Harry he could get the better of, not the one with the arm reach that he now has.” Shaking his head, he looked over the copies of what Albus gave up. Rubbing his chin, he said, “It's going to take time to suss out what is here and figure what leads we might be able to find.”
“Indeed,” Lucius sighed. “It's good we have it, though. Mayhaps Nagini can give us some help with it. I don't know. Let's see what else they have or can come up with as this goes on. I don't know. We'll start hunting, though. Well—after a fashion.”
“That might end up a bigger help than what we realize, Lucius,” Severus told him, setting one sheet aside and going on to the next. “Not only is there what we know about the madman, but we have a neutral perspective that those in the middle don't. We may be able to see something they can't. I doubt we'll be much help now, but we can keep an eye on what they get and meld it with what we can find. Let's see what we can manage with this. If nothing else, we can point them towards places to look as we're more acquainted with the Dark Lord than they are. Albus may think he knows more about the maniac than anyone else, but he doesn't. We've had to deal with him in a way the old goat hasn't. That'll help, plenty.”
“Another very true statement,” Lucius conceded. “We'll come up with something, never fear.” Snorting as Harry ended up pinning Sirius to the ground for the first time ever, he smirked then added, tone laced with amusement, “I think the days of Black getting the better of Harry all the time are now over. He may achieve that here and there, but he's in for meeting the ground more often than not.”
“He is,” Severus agreed with a nod, smirking himself as he looked up at the two. “Which means he'll resort to sneaky and underhanded. I don't fancy his chances with that either as Harry has to expect that's coming. So, he'll learn that, in this case, youth and size will win out.” Lowering his voice, he added, “Both will enjoy it, though, so it doesn't matter. That's all that counts.”
“Very true, Severus,” Lucius said, snorting as Black found out that Harry's long arms had him tied up in a position that wasn't something he could get out of. That was ever so amusing!
“There is one other thing before I go,” Sirius said, looking around the dining room table. It was just after lunch, so he was going to head back as he had covered everything he needed. Hand on Harry's back, he said, “We decided to set off one object before school starts. It's going to turn up tomorrow in Godric's Hollow.”
Brow furrowed, Severus asked, “Is there a reason for that? Or just to keep it going?”
“There's a reason,” Sirius told him with an evil grin, chuckling as he clapped Harry on the shoulder.
“I can't wait to hear this,” Lucius said with a snort of amusement. “What have you two concocted for this one?”
“We've been thinking of the issues with you two when it comes to this nightmare ending. That's normal, what with me getting cleared and that. So, what we did is we've left some of Harry's school books right outside the house in Godric's Hollow. Inside one is a note in Harry's handwriting that says he's alive and safe. And not to look for him. Of course, we left some evidence of our patsies, but that's more to run everyone in circles about it as it looks like it's contradicting everything else we've done. It can only help and will drive everyone mad.” Grinning again, he added, “Of course, we decorated it with blood as well.”
“Oh, this should be good,” Harry laughed, shaking his head.
“I never thought to do that, but it's perfect,” Lucius told him, impressed.
“Good plan,” Severus nodded, pleased with that idea. “It's enough time to get Albus looking into it, but not enough opportunity that he can do what he normally could as he's within days of going back to school.”
“It is,” Lucius admitted. “Good plan. Yes, it can help. And will increase keeping him off kilter. That's something you should both plan on. It can only help us and give all of us the time we need to figure the pieces of this puzzle out.”
“That's what we thought,” Sirius nodded. “Anything to give us time. The war is coming, we get that, and Albus isn't going to step up, something we know as well. We just need time to figure this out then see what we can manage to end it ourselves or push someone else to do it. The Ministry—not sure there. That's going to depend, so we thought to toss some more spanners out there that can only give us what we need.” Looking between the three, he added, “Those drawers, baskets, whatever, you were talking about—I really think you need to press on with those and get them done if you can manage it. With what we're doing now, they can only help. I'm sure we're going to have a shiteload we need to get in your hands, fast. And if we keep popping over here every day, the chance of someone catching on to something off is there.”
“We'll get on them,” Severus assured him in a firm tone. “We've got part of the spells deciphered and instructions for other areas, so we'll see what we can do.”
“Yes, we now need to exercise more caution than normal,” Lucius sighed, shaking his head. “Give the three of us a little time to see what we can come up with. Instead of some areas we planned to press on with, we'll focus here to get it done. Never fear, we'll come up with something.”
Ruffling Harry's hair, Sirius grinned then added, “And I'm going to have to figure out some way to beat you at wrestling now. You're much bigger than you used to be so what I previously did won’t work well now.”
Seeing Harry grin and hearing him chuckle, Lucius shook his head then said, tone of one completely amused, “I don't fancy your chances there, Sirius. He might be thin, but he's got a longer reach than you, not to mention leverage you don't. I think your days of winning are long over.”
“I'll come up with something, trust me!” Sirius laughed, shaking his head. Though, honestly, he didn't mind losing. It was fun to muck about with Harry.
Reading through the book Sirius gave them on Animagus transformations, Harry looked up to see what Severus and Lucius were doing. From what he could see, they were going through all the bits and bobs they had on those cabinets, trying to figure out where to start putting something together to pass along what they needed. That was good and something he would let them take on as they knew what they were looking for. All he knew about Vanishing Cabinets was what they told him about them.
Leaning back and stretching out his legs with a soft groan, he gave a contented sigh. They had just finished their first foray into the transformation earlier; a meditation session. Though he had issues, as would be expected his first time doing that, it was quite relaxing. Quieting his mind was the issue as he hadn't really done much with that other than when he worked on his shields with Severus. Even then, that wasn't the same. Once they all could master this part, they would press on. Severus and Lucius thought it wouldn't take them that much to do this as they were all powerful enough to deal with the harder parts later. That was good and something he wanted to master.
Watching the two, he asked, “How's it going?”
“Not bad,” Severus told him in a distracted tone as he compared his notes to what was written in the book he was holding. “I think, maybe, we might have the most basic charms we need to start. And none of them are that complex. This though—it's going to take a layering process for it to work right. And time, as the layers have to settle so they don't intermingle with what comes after them.”
“It's just going to end up a trial and error process,” Lucius chimed in, shifting his notes around then scrawling a few more as he looked at the book by his elbow. “We have the most basic ones it takes to build a Vanishing Cabinet. That will help. It's just—they are secretive on what they use to get it all functional. Nothing more. We'll get it sussed out and working.”
“Sounds complicated,” Harry chuckled, picking up his drink and taking a sip.
“It is,” Lucius admitted, putting the book aside when he finished taking notes on what was there. Leaning back with a sigh, he took a sip of his own drink then said, “We'll manage. After all, we have nothing but time to work on it. Though it's pressing, I do admit that. We'll get it figured out or come up with another means to deliver what we need.”
Nodding to that, Harry finished the last of his butterbeer and sat the empty on the table then asked, “What else are we pressing on with, aside from the normal? I get we're changing up some bits here and there, so I just want prepared.”
“We're going give you some more intensive dueling lessons,” Severus told him, leaning back and crossing his legs. “Nothing hard, I assure you. We just want to work with some areas, nothing more, then press on from what you know. It's our thought that we can get you to a place where you won't have problems defending yourself. Nothing more than that.”
“That I like,” Harry admitted with a grin and nod.
“You already have the basics, and some beyond, in place, so we're going to work with the rest,” Lucius told him. “I'm also going to take on Runes and Arithmancy with you for an hour a day. Those—we'll see how you feel about them before we set up anything formal. Even if I can get you through the most basic of them, it'll help you in other areas.”
“Those are the two I'm not sure about,” Harry admitted with a shake of his head. “Let's see what they're like.”
“In the next day or so, we're going to sit down with you and hammer out a more formal schedule with you for classes. Some—they aren't important and we'll just do here and there. Others we need to ensure you can pass your OWLS when we turn back up.” Severus explained, relaxing. “Your input is something we want on it. As we've got your magic channeling better, it shouldn't be the struggle it was before and you'll find everything easier.”
“Easier is good, too,” Harry grinned, chuckling, petting Kaliya's head as he slithered into his lap. “I like easier. Frustration—I don't need any more of that.”
“Completely understood and something we appreciate,” Lucius admitted with an amused smirk. “We'll get you through it, never fear. The schedule may look intimidating, but you need to consider that you're the only one we're working with. So, it'll move along faster. Other than potions, we're not doing the standard allotted time with the classes. Instead, we're cutting it in half. Plus, we can do bits outside lounging by the pool or on the patio. That'll be nice to take in while the weather is still good.”
“Those in school would kill for that,” Harry chuckled. “And I'll like it!”
“Oh, indeed,” Severus snorted. “We'll make it somewhat more entertaining than you're used to. That's needed, for all of us, so we don't go a bit barmy. Never fear, Harry, we'll manage.”
“We will and will have fun while we do,” Harry told him, happy with this. It was—he was looking forward to working with the two on plenty. They not only knew what they were doing and could get it across, but took into account plenty of the issues he was having. That was good. Besides, despite what most would think, they were fun to work with, coming up with ways to go about dull lessons that were a riot. Like the bit with the duck. It helped to do it that way and what he learned stuck better. And no one, anywhere, that had Severus as a teacher would have thought that, but it was true. That was nice.
“I think we're going to have you help with this as well. Once we figure out what we're doing that is,” Lucius snorted. “From what I can tell, it's just basic charms you should know to start with. It then builds from there. You can easily manage.”
“That way we all learn together,” Severus told him.
“I like doing that,” Harry admitted softly. And he did, for more than one reason. Some of those, though, he would keep to himself.
“I can safely speak for Lucius when I say it's the same for us,” Severus told him.
“So, how hard are the basic charms on the bit you're looking up anyway?” Harry asked, curious.
“Not difficult at all,” Lucius told him. “It's just the layering.” Then he went on to explain what they found so far and how it had to be done.
Looking up at the imposing prison while standing on the rocks around it, Voldemort was pleased. So far, they hadn't been detected. Good. That meant that it wouldn't be until he started dismantling the wards around it that their presence would finally be revealed.
After a glance at those with him, he said, tone hard, “Keep watch. Our presence is about to become known. Once I get the wards down, we break in. Let everyone loose you can. I'll concentrate on getting my followers. The Dementors know we're coming and won't bother you. Toss them the Aurors or let them take them, either one. That's their payment for allowing this.” Hearing confirmation that everyone heard him, Voldemort went to work on the wards. The ones with him were the least incompetent followers that he had. They weren't the best, of course, but ones he held more trust in than he did some of the others. After this was done, though, he would have the ones with him he did trust. Good. That's what he needed.
Concentrating as he dismantled the ancient wards, something that fought him every step of the way, he also focused on what was to come. In a couple days their presence would be known to all and the UK would once more tremble with fear, knowing he was back. Good. That's what he wanted. He was then going to exact retribution on plenty. Before long, he would be in charge and it would go his way. That he vowed.
Laughing, Sirius shook his head then took a sip of his beer. For the first time since that paper was signed, he was sitting in the Leaky Cauldron with Remus, Tonks, Kingsley, Moody and Bill. They had come for supper, but were just shooting the shite now, having a good time while doing it. Since coming in, most that didn't know him avoided their table or shot them fearful looks, but plenty he had known over the years had come to sit for a while and just talk. Sure, most of those were associated with the Order in some way, but it was nice.
The plan had been just to come in for dinner, but they were having such a good time and didn't have anything pressing to attend to, so they stuck around. He was glad of that, too. It had been so long since he did something like this that he had forgotten how much he liked it.
Snorting at a story from Kingsley about picking up a wizard that had a thing for sheep, Sirius' brow furrowed when he saw Albus coming their way. As the man looked grave, he straightened up, wondering what was going on. It was then a signal from within Tonks' and Kingsley's pockets went off. This meant something big.
Coming over to the table the group was seated at, Albus put his hand on it then looked around at them. Seeing Tonks and Kingsley stand, knowing they had probably just been called back in, he said, quietly, face pale, “Azkaban was just breached. Most prisoners either escaped or have gone missing. I think we need to all get back to headquarters.” Normally, this wasn't something that he would say in public, but he thought they were far enough away from everyone that they wouldn't be overheard.
Going pale, Kingsley said, making sure his voice was low enough that no one that might be close would overhear, “We have to get to the Ministry. When we know something we'll pass it to you.”
Nodding to that, Albus moved aside so the two could get by. Looking at the rest there, he said, “We need to get word out to everyone we can.”
Standing, Remus said, “We'll start, Albus. Don't worry.” Though pale, he was pleased with this as well. It meant that the war had begun. Good. That also meant that they could end it sooner and get those involved that could do the most good.
“Let's get home and we'll send out messages to all we can,” Sirius said after downing the rest of his beer and standing as well. With that, he planned to ensure he could get to the mirror and pass along the information to the three in hiding. Though it wouldn't affect them and they were safe, it was something they needed to know, that's for damned sure.
Nodding, Albus sighed then told them, making sure his voice was kept down, “I'm calling a meeting as soon as I can. We all need to prepare the best we are able to.” Straightening up, he added, “I'll be over when I can.” Seeing nods, he turned and hurried out, a grave look on his face. Though most wouldn't know of this until the following day when the Prophet hit, he was going to do what he could to pass the word to all he knew, Order or not. They would know what it meant and could protect themselves.
Looking out over the manicured lawn from his balcony door, Harry watched the rain fall. Well, the best he could as it was dark outside. That and took in the wonderful smell that always came with the rain. It was more magnified than what he was used to because Avalon Manor was so far away from the town, thus making the air smell cleaner. Stroking Kaliya's head where it rested on his shoulder, he glanced back when he heard the door open. He knew who it was, of course, as he sent the message with an elf for them to come up. Shaking his head as he looked at them, he sighed, “Sirius just sent a message. He couldn't stay, but he wanted it passed along.”
Assuming it was big news if Black didn't talk to Harry for a while, even though they had spent plenty of time together earlier, Severus asked, “What's going on?”
“He broke his followers out of Azkaban,” Harry told them, looking between their faces. “Sirius doesn't know all the details yet, but it happened.”
“And the war has begun,” Lucius said softly, shaking his head. Sighing, he looked between the two and told them, “I want to set up alarms around the property. That and get with Buckbeak to see if he can alert us to anyone that might be tarrying close to us.”
“We're safe here, Lucius,” Severus assured him.
“I know,” Lucius nodded. “I would just feel better if we do that. It's better safe than sorry.”
“I see that point, yes,” Severus admitted. “We'll do what we can.”
“Nagini and I can both make rounds at night if you set up a way for us to get out,” Kaliya chimed in softly. As he knew what was going on from discussions, he figured this may help matters.
“Yes, we can help,” Nagini said, shifting around on Lucius' shoulders. “We don't sleep like all of you and get up several times a night.”
“We can easily do that,” Lucius said, reaching up to stroke his girl on the head. Sighing, he said, “We expected this, yes. And it's good. It just means it's time to be more cautious than we have been about many matters. That and pay close attention to what's going on in our world.”
Looking out at the darkened sky, hearing the rain patter heavily as it hit the balcony and elsewhere, Severus sighed then said, “The war has begun.”
“Now we just have to wait and see how bad this gets,” Harry said softly.
“It'll be bad,” Lucius told him. Shaking his head, he asked, “Is your godfather going to get back to you later with details?”
“He said he would try,” Harry told him with a sigh. “From what he told me, it's chaos and they are not only trying to get details, but warn everyone they can to protect themselves. He told me if he can't do it tonight, he will in the morning. If it's something we have to know right away, he's going to try to send a short message.”
“Understood,” Severus nodded. Straightening up, stiffening his spine, he said, “Let's all go outside and check the warding then activate the signals we can. Harry, talk to Buckbeak to see what you can get across. Kaliya and Nagini, both of you take a trip around the perimeter of the grounds so you know just what is where and can detect anything off. When we're finished, we'll work on a door for both of you to get in and out of at night.”
Pleased to have something to do, Lucius nodded. “Let's get to work, gentlemen. Put on your best Impervious and we'll tend to matters.” Seeing nods, he turned and swept out, trying to think over all the security measures they could put up. This was good, though, and what everyone needed. It was time for the sheep to face reality and do what was needed. That and kick the Ministry in the behind to get them moving in the right direction. Though what was coming wasn't pleasant and would be horrid, it was time for it. Yes, this they needed, everyone did. Now they just had to deal with the hell that had been unleashed. Nothing more. They had managed for the duration of the last war and they would this one was well.
