Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. That lucky duck JK Rowling does. I don't make any money from this fanfic. I just play with her toys and put them back in relatively good condition. |
The ranch resembled something out of a science fiction novel. Large boulders defied gravity, hovering midair without anyone seeming to have them in a levitating spell. Individual water droplets were suspended in the air, reflecting hundreds of rainbows over the entire scape. The grass had been completely removed in some places, revealing circles of bare dirt under suspended boulders. In other places, it had grown as tall as trees, creating a mini-jungle of sorts. The trees that lined the pasture were twisted around each other. It looked like a tornado had cut through it and left it a jagged mess.
It wasn’t just the flora and fauna that changed. At random intervals, there were scorch marks in the earth and bluebell flames burning brightly above them, hovering like the stones. Random items defied gravity. Pools of water were flowing uphill. Winds swirled around in only one spot. Small bursts of light flashed with no source of origin and spun around in circles with no center.
The children were all standing in a circle off to the side admiring the damage while the adults wandered around assessing the damage.
“What the bloody hell happened?” Draco breathed.
“A happy accident,” Melody said dreamily. Her pupils were blown as she stared at the sight. “We decided to team up, phenoms against phenoms. I figured it would be better if they could see what they were up against. We didn’t hold back and… damn.”
Draco stared as Melody put her hands in the air and danced around like Luna. “Okay, Melody’s gone completely barmy. Someone else want to fill me in?”
“She’s just mesmerized by the beauty,” Harmony said quietly as she hobbled up from behind a grove of gnarled trees. “I imagine it looks like the most enchanting portrait ever.”
“So what happened?” Hermione asked.
“Well, she and Alex threw a curse at Zach at the same time Severus and Celeste did. He and Violetta threw up a shield but it wasn’t enough. Before it could hit Zach, Nate and Anastasia jumped in, forcing him back with a faster moving spell. From there, it seemed a ripple effect. Each couple knocked the other out of harm’s way in a unique way that reacted with the environment.”
“And it made this?” Draco asked, looking around.
Harmony nodded. “It did. Imagine if it were a concentrated effort.”
“We could try it now,” Melody called.
“That’s suicide,” Harmony scoffed.
“Nope, just calculated chaos.”
“Melody,” Harmony growled.
“You honestly think you’re going to talk her out of it?” Alex called.
Harmony sighed. “Fine, but it needs to be calculated to the minute. And the children still need to figure out exactly what it was that they did. Most of them haven’t the foggiest clue.”
“But you do,” Melody said in a sing-song voice.
“Okay,” Harmony sighed. “Melody has checked out of reality so we’ll have to do this without her.”
“More like Melody has a severe concussion that’s knocked her silly,” Philippe said quietly.
Draco and Hermione spun to see the new vampire hiding out at the edge of a grove of trees. The shadows suggested that there were tall oaks shading him, but the actual trees were leaning sideways and away from him. Everything seemed to be completely backwards.
Draco whistled. “How are we going to put this place back together?”
Harmony bit her lip in thought. “We’ll have to do it piece by piece. You see, each unique couple can bend something. Think of it as a bastardized elemental. I’m not sure that’s what the Gods were going for, but it’s what we got. Actually, Nahuatl and the phoenixes helped make this mess. Seems the boys got power over fire when they shifted. They can breathe it… like a damned dragon.”
“They’re responsible for the flames?” Hermione asked.
“Nope,” Melody said with a grin. “That would be your very own kiddos. Pure magic, well, pure balanced magic makes very pretty fire.”
Draco rubbed his forehead in frustration. “Okay, so both our sets of twins can produce fire?”
“Yes,” Harmony said.
“No,” Melody countered at the same time.
Draco growled. “So which is it?”
“I said balanced,” Melody said. “So Scorp and Ara and their mates. So pretty.”
“You’re a bleeding lunatic,” Severus cut in as he stalked across the way. Celeste, Harry, and Ginny were with them.
Melody blinked at him and cocked her head. “And?”
Severus frowned. “Alex, there is a clarity potion in the basement next to the pensieve.”
“On it,” Alex said, disappearing and reappearing seconds later. He tipped the potion down Melody’s throat and waited.
Melody chuckled. “You honestly think that will make me not crazy?”
“I’m hoping you’ll be a shade more helpful than Luna,” Severus growled.
“Oh, that’s not nice,” Melody said with a pout. “Luna’s wonderful.”
“And loopy,” Severus said. “I want my cynic back.”
“You married her,” Melody deadpanned.
Severus rolled his eyes and turned to Harmony. “So, you were saying.”
Harmony bit back a grin. “Let’s see. Violetta is a quarter fae, a nature loving creature. Zach’s power seems to enhance that. It made everything grow like crazy. Anastasia is part mermaid, a water loving creature. Nate’s power enhances that. So Violetta accidentally grew some of these amazing looking vines when she tried to help Zach shield and Anastasia threw some really powerful water currents to knock them away. Nahuatl saw they were probably going to drown and ordered the water to disperse. The boys breathed a bit of fire to speed things up. Whala. Instant rainbows.”
“Impressive,” Draco said.
Harmony nodded. “It was but then things got out of hand. Spells ricocheted. The others had to cast to keep them away and that’s where this mess came from. Let’s go down the list because trying to describe what happened in any detail will keep us here all night. We’ll start with the oldest, my girls. Matt’s giant heritage has seemed to make him more in tune with the earth. Combined with Cadence, you get boulders rising from it to block spells. Deven is born of the night. He and Rhapsody created cold shadows that snuffed out some errant fire.”
“Errant fire?” Hermione asked.
Harmony gave a weak smile. “Told you everything happened at once. We’ll get to that later and if you like, you can look at a pensive after.”
They nodded, desperately wanting to see exactly how everything happened. However, they were still dying to figure out what happened, so they motioned for Harmony to continue.
“So, next are Adrian and Zandra, who are extremely wild, though completely controlled. I believe they are responsible for the sideways trees and some of the gravity reversal. Serena and Jonah might have been responsible for most of the latter though. Same type of couple, you see. James and Annabel, they’re responsible for the light. I think it has something to do with their souls.”
“It does,” Melody said. “Souls always search for the light in the darkness. Two unstable ones can apparently create it too. And it’s beautiful.”
“Moving on,” Harmony sighed. “Lazarus and Andra are resurrectionists, well, Lazarus is, but they’re wild too. That’s why everything is still so green and fresh though it’s been upturned. The fire burned everything to the ground and then it all grew back so fast you could hardly blink. That leaves us at your next set of twins. The empath, the mind reader, and the two strongest balanced twins. They all cast together and made that lovely little tornado that whipped through here and ripped everything to shreds. I believe they can mimic any weather condition that they feel at the moment. Right then, I imagine chaos made them feel like they were swept in a tornado. And there you have it.”
“I’ll say,” Harry said as he looked around.
Harmony nodded. “And last but certainly not least, there is Lily and Cecil. Did you know they both love quidditch? It’s one of the things they have in common. They love the wind blowing through their hair and coincidentally… they can control it.”
“But all at once, it’s a disaster,” Celeste said gravely.
“Or the perfect cover,” Philippe called.
“What?” Ginny asked.
Philippe pulled his cloak hood over his head and strolled out to meet everyone. “Think about it. Remember the war? Hermione and Draco attracted a boatload of attention because their powers were visible, tangible things that people could see, feel, hell even touch. It made them stand out.”
“Your point?” Severus asked.
“Well, our children can do that too… but control over the elements. What’s to say that a freak hurricane didn’t wipe out an entire island instead of a couple of teenagers looking to end a war?”
“I can feel the magic,” Severus pointed out.
Philippe nodded. “But Melody, can you see the individual pieces of magic?”
Melody shook her head, her eyes still twinkling brightly. “Nope, perfectly blended. I can see which couple is responsible for which, but no spell ever created could pick it apart. I imagine it would look like a magical explosion, too much buildup, maybe a potion’s lab explosion… something much too huge for anyone to grasp and point fingers.”
Philippe held out his hand, palm up and grinned, his fangs glinting in the light. “And there you have it.”
Hermione’s head spun with the new information, coming to one final, horrifying conclusion. “But if they all cast at the same time…”
“Oblivion,” Melody said. “Complete vapor. I imagine it would be the same as you two and you wouldn’t be able to stop it.”
“But they could take out the entire world!” Hermione cried.
Melody nodded. “All the more reason to practice. Remember, you two had to be very careful too.”
“What are we going to do today, Brain?” Celeste sniffed.
Melody cackled. “Same thing we do every night Pinky. Try to take over the world! MUAHAHAHAHA!”
“Mom’s gone bananas,” Zach said quietly. He was huddled over in a corner with the rest of the kids, listening to the adults hash out everything.
“She’s overwhelmed,” Rhapsody scolded. “She’s better now that Severus gave her the clarity potion, but she’s still pretty baked.”
“But Cadence isn’t like that,” Nate said.
Cadence blinked and looked at him. “I didn’t take a direct hit either.”
“Touché,” Nate sighed. “I didn’t mean to hit her.”
“None of us did,” Anastasia said soothingly. “And she’s not mad at all. I have this strange feeling that she’s had much worse.”
“She has,” Rhapsody said, her eyes haunted.
“So what do we do?” Zandra asked. “We’ve got to get a handle on it or we could blow ourselves and everything else up.”
Rhapsody shrugged. “We do exactly what they tell us to and hone them as best we can. They’ve had years to learn to perfect their control but Hermione and Draco only had months to master it. They had a war to fight. There wasn’t time to get all the nuances down so they were pushed to the limit without breaking it.”
Scorpius cleared his throat. “Why not break it?”
Ara snorted and smacked him in the head. “You idiot. Mom and dad are the most powerful couple in the entire world, more than any of us even. Do you honestly think that the other phenoms could have held their power in? I mean, honestly, how many of us did it take to keep them from blowing the place up when they healed Lily and Cecil? And there was still backlash.”
“But the question is,” Violetta said quietly. “If we all combine our powers, can the most powerful couple in the world stop us from destroying it?”
They all fell silent. It was a very good question, one no one had the answer to. The adults heard it loud and clear, too. This was made apparent when they came over and sat beside their children.
“No one knows the answer to that,” Harmony said quietly. “But we’ll try our best to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

“So, water huh?” Nate sighed and stared at the large stock tank that was almost empty.
Anastasia nodded. “Guess so.”
“Well, let’s do this.”
Anastasia stared at him. “You know how?”
“Nope.”
“Then what exactly are we going to do?”
“Stand here and pretend we know.”
“That’s real productive,” Zach chuckled.
“You’ve got a better idea then,” Nate shot back.
Zach’s grin fell. “Not really. How do you make a plant un-grow?”
“You kill it?” Nate offered.
“No!” Violetta shouted before she thought better of herself. It looked like every blade of grass at the ranch trembled.
Zach barely blinked. “No killing. Got it.”
“Maybe you could prune them,” Anastasia offered. “And then I can… um… direct some water over them and… um… the Malfoys can burn the cuttings and sprinkle it as fertilizer.”
“It’s a good idea,” Nate said with a smile. “But there is one problem.”
Anastasia’s eyes watered. “What’s that?”
“We still have no clue how to control the water.”
“I can help with that,” Nahuatl said, sidling up.
Draco and Hermione watched the elemental sit down and start talking about the physics of water and how it relates to magic. She was very knowledgeable. The other children had started slowly working on how to harness their individual powers on a small scale. Rhapsody and Celeste both know how to harness theirs because of their gifts. They’d already cleared the shadows and boulders and went to start helping others.
“How long before they clear it, you think?” Harry asked quietly.
Hermione shrugged. “I took one too many curses before I learned how to block.”
“So a while then,” Ginny said.
“Baby steps,” Draco said. “I don’t want to push them as hard as we pushed ourselves.”
“Why not?” Harry asked. “We’re really on a time line, aren’t we?”
Draco nodded. “We are… but we’ve also got to find out the big picture and that will require us to travel. Can you two keep an eye on the prisoners while we look?”
“You plan on keeping them then?” Harry asked.
Draco sighed. “You want me to send them back?”
Harry pursed his lips. “No. And I don’t suppose that the American aurors can arrest them.”
Hermione shook her head. “They’ve not officially done anything wrong. Well, nothing that we can prove anyway. It would be about like fifth year when nobody but Ron and I believed that Voldemort had returned.”
“A lesson in futility,” Ginny sighed.
“What do you want me to do with them then?” Harry asked.
“Keep an eye on them,” Draco answered. “Pump them for information periodically. Don’t do it in any predictable sort of manner but you’ll have to check in on them every day. Moira tried to call them home using a blood rite. If she tries again, it will kill them. The Manor’s wards are too tight now to allow it to happen.”
Harry nodded. “Done.”
“Where will you start?” Ginny asked.
“Well,” Hermione sighed. “I guess we start with the memories Severus pulled from Michael.”
“Go get started,” Harry said. “We’ll call if we need anything.”
They nodded and trekked down to the basement of the house where they knew Severus had stored Michael’s memories until they could view them. It almost made their stomachs turn, but they had to get through them if they wanted to know more about Moira. They might have to take another trip to the Manor to pick through Dormer’s brain, but it would give them a start.
“Whatever we see,” Draco said as he stared at the pensive and the numbered vials. “I love you until the end.”
Hermione gave him a watery smile and held him tightly. They’d get through this. They had to.
