He had been working steadily for just over a centar {hour} when his door suddenly chimed, opening just as he looked up. "Ardyn," he said, forcing a smile to his lips. "Oh. Hey Tris, Logan, Ki," his smile became more relaxed, more real. "Where is everyone else?"
"Looking into a few leads," Logan answered. "Harry and Severus are looking into something that just cropped up," his eyes shifted to Ardyn briefly, then back to him. "They refused to say what it was about. Said they wanted to see if there was anything to it first."
"Would you care to join me for dinner, Rory?" Ardyn asked with a smile that had Roark grinding his teeth.
"Hey, you could both join us instead. Ki can get ahold of Fi, and I can call Des, Lex, and the cousins. You can call Harry and Severus, and see if they can get away. I've got letters from Dad, and several of my brothers, and Ki said that he has a letter from Uncle Thorin and Uncle Bilbo."
"DO you? That's great, Harry and I got letters from our grandparents, one from Uncle Zac and Aunt Athena. I think Uncle Apollo forgot about us, I've not heard from him since I graduated."
"Come on," Ki bounced forward, "join us. We can have a letter reading party."
Roark had to shake his head, though he WAS deeply tempted. "I'm sorry guys, I really can't tonight. I have GOT to get these progress reports done and sent out before the Admiral, Commander Thorin, and the Council start calling and demanding to know why their progress reports are so late. Severus said Dacian had warned him they were getting impatient."
He glanced at the clock and saw it was only fourteen hundred. "Tell you what, Logan, Ki, why don't you stop by my place around twenty hundred? I'll make us a light snack and I can read them then."
"Sounds good, and if we don't happen to catch you tonight, we'll just bring them in with us tomorrow and you and Harry can read them then."
Roark smiled. "Actually that sounds like the better plan. It'll give me something to look forward to. I'll bring my grandfather, grandmother and Aunt Athena's. We'll take a couple of hours to read them all."
Logan gave him a smile. "Sounds good. See you tomorrow, then," he turned and left the office with Kili and Tristyn.
Ardyn, after issuing a warning to him not to work all night, turned to follow them as well. "I mean it, Roark. Get home at a halfway decent time and get some rest."
"I will, Ardyn. Goodnight,"
After his office had emptied, he turned back to his laptop, re-read the last paragraph, and returned to the painstaking job of typing out his progress reports.

A soft chime brought his head up from the report he was currently working on. As his door remained closed, he next turned to the clock and blinked at the time he saw there.
"Well, FUCK," he breathed sitting back in his chair.
His report to the President and the Council of the Twelve was done and sent, but the one he was working on for the Admiral and the rest...not so much. Raising a hand, he rubbed it over his face with a tired sigh, thinking back now to the progress they had made, or, more like the LACK of it these last couple of sectons{ months}. Most of which he knew could be laid at the feet of their leaks, though two of them were now dead, thanks to the team of Terminators that had eliminated his team.
They were, of course, still doing their best, but the leaks were somehow still managing to get a hold of restricted information. Information that now had Tom Riddle constantly changing the landing points of nearly all of his incoming shipments, as well as their times. He was also changing the times of outgoing shipments, as well as from where they were being shipped from.
As soon as that had begun to happen, he and Harry had begun to wonder if they had perhaps missed someone, but no, they knew they hadn't, which meant that Riddle had managed to get his hands on more of their people through bribes...or something else.
They were still receiving those notes from the two inside Riddle's organization, those notes appearing in some of the most unexpected places, like Severus' labs, his office, or even in one of the Durins' offices.
They had been expecting these changes to be made, and they had quickly moved to begin countering them as best they could, making more than a few changes of their own to compensate. They managed to get their hands on a few key drop zones for some of his more popular drugs, then there were his slavers...They had also managed to stop a few of the outgoing shipments, which, Roark had later been informed by a smirking Rodolphus on one of the few times he chose to actually approach him for a 'talk', had infuriated Riddle.
"Good," he had told him with a smirk of his own. "The more we infuriate him, the better we feel."
"Be careful, Peverell Potter," he growled coldly, stepping into him, making him back into the brick wall behind him. "You are playing a very dangerous game with an even MORE dangerous, and very deadly man."
Roark had so very nearly groaned as he had felt his body's reaction to the blasted man's closeness. Thank Gods for brick walls stopping him from backing away furth---No, no NO! his mind screamed as he tensed, though not for the reason Rodolphus might have wanted to think.
"A game that I intend to win, Lestrange," he told him, "because believe me when I tell you, I can be JUST as dangerous...and just as deadly as any of you if the situation warrants it."
"Hum? Can you really?" he asked, his sherry eyes having darkened with that lust he usually kept so tightly under his control as his eyes began to move down, then back up until their gazes met again. His sensual lips twisting into a semblance of a smile. "I can hardly wait to find out." He had leaned in, his lips so close..."Are you ready?"
Roark could not, no matter how hard he tried, stop the gasp. "Bring it on, Lestrange."
FUCK! Was that his voice sounding so breathless? By the look in Rodolphus's eyes, it was. "I will. In due time. Good night, Peverell Potter." He backed, turned, and disappeared quickly into the darkness that surrounded them.
The problem was, as Roark saw it, as his brother and the Durins were seeing it, was that it had all come down to a game of chance, with far more getting through than any of them liked. 'Ah hell,' he thought with a deep sigh as he got to his feet, reaching for his empty mug, 'it does me...US no good to dwell on what we cannot control.' He moved over to the sideboard to make himself some more tea.
He was just returning to his desk when his com beeped an incoming call. Setting his steaming mug down, he reached out to press the button to accept the call as he took a seat. "Yes?" he asked of the man who appeared on his screen.
"Lt. Roark, I'm Security Agent Kevion Merchant. I work at the Aquarian. I'm afraid there has been a bit of a...disturbance here. Would you be able to come down here?"
"Yes, of course, Security Agent Merchant," he answered getting to his feet once again, reaching for the scarlet jacket hanging over the back of his chair. "A disturbance of what kind?"
"One of your Officers, Lt. Tristyn has been...injured."
"Injured?" Roark asked as a feeling of ice seized his heart. "I'll be there in a few centons {minutes}. Have you contacted Lt. Hadrian and Healer-Lt. Colonel Severus? How about Captain Fili?"
"Yes, sir, and both are on their way. We've tried the others, but Captain Fili and Major Alexei are unavailable. We were also not able to get ahold of Captain Desmond, Colonel Jordan or Major Tyler. The messages on their com links said they would be unavailable til morning, and I haven't the authority to override. Lt. Logan has turned his com off."
'He's done WHAT?' Roark thought in surprise. 'He knows better than that.' "And Lt. Kili?"
"Lt. Kili is here Sir, and Captain Ardyn is also on his way, but he's coming from the other side of the Capitol."
"Understood. Tell Kili I'm on my way."
"Yes Sir."
