It was close to two sectars later, on a bright, sunny morning that those that had been working with Roark to get his shielding strengthened, as well as a wall or two, to separate his empathy enough that it no longer bled into everything, to protect not only himself but everyone around him.
His strong gifts, while still a bit wild, were becoming better controlled. Unfortunately, he was still dreaming, waking nearly every night with screams, with impressions of ultimate destruction. Dylan's dreams were also beginning to become much more horrifying, but in so many different pieces that he hadn't been able to put them together/
They were having breakfast early one morning, a discussion on Roark's improvement, coming to the conclusion that he was centered and grounded enough, his shielding strong enough to attempt to bring down that wall, to face what was behind it.
"You've explored the wall he's built while working with him?" Roark Sr. asked softly, looking down the table at his youngest, who sat between Rodolphus and Harry, to see that he looked well rested, his face clear of any stress, laughing at something Harry had just told him.
Ethan and Roan both gave nods as Severus, sitting beside Dacian, reached to pick up his coffee and sip. "It's just as Rodolphus described it," he said quietly. "It's completely wrapped around the memory of the dream. The wall itself is pitch black, no windows, no door."
"I see," came thoughtfully. "You think it safe to attempt to bring it down now? The Conference is set for two sectars, at the old moon of Cimtar?"
"We think, at least, that he is ready. Kili and Dylan have decided they will join Roark. Dylan says that while his dreams are beginning to become more detailed, he, like the others, feels the same horror, the same despair."
"He doesn't remember the content of the dream any more than the others do, and he wants to explore why."
A nod. "How do you think we should go about bringing it down?"
"Very slowly and carefully. I think it would be best to form a circle around Rory, Ki, and Dylan, our strongest Psychics, you Dad, myself, Roan, Severus, Harry, Rodolphus and Rabastan. Schyler and Sebastien will be joining us as well."
"You are expecting to have trouble then?"
"I am. We are all aware that this premonition is extremely horrifying to all three of them, that their minds have formed this wall to protect their waking minds from the content. When we bring those walls down...Yes, Uncle Thorin, we're expecting trouble of--"
"There is something I would like to ask you, Roark," came Rodolphus' deep voice into their quiet conversation, making them all turn at the tone, "before we head over to the Training Center."
Roark set aside his juice glass. "You sound so serious all of a sudden, Dolph. What is it?"
"As you know, I found several sets of bonding rings, bracelets, and armbands in the Lestrange Family storage box." From the inner pocket of his scarlet leather jacket, he drew out a medium-sized, deep blue velvet box. "I had taken everything to the jewelers to be cleaned. These I got back yesterday."
Pushing his chair back from the table, he moved to kneel before Roark, hearing several deeply indrawn breaths as he did so, abated silence falling as they all, realizing what he was about to do, watched. Pulling the lid up, he held the box up to him.
"Roark Christopher Durin Peverell Potter, will you do me the great honor of becoming my bonded life partner, my husband?"
In the box were two sets of bonding rings. Within the titanium filigree bands was set a circular cut, deep blue sapphire, then two rows, one above, one below, of interspersed diamonds and sapphires. Behind the two betrothal rings were two filigree bands, the filigree wire having been worked into an intricate, interlocking pattern of ancient Kobolian design.
"They're beautiful, Rodolphus," he breathed into the silence of the dining room, "and just like the set of rubies Rabastan gave Harry." He met Rodolphus' eyes, held them. "Yes," he finally breathed. "Yes, Rodolphus, I will bond with you, be your husband."
