No One Comes When You Cry
Chapter 45 Home is where the heart is
Severus did not even hear her go. He was too busy tearing at his own hair in frustration to notice. It was only the draught against his back from the open door that made him turn and alerted him to her disappearance.
“Shit.” He muttered as he stalked out of the study and slammed the door behind him.
Fortunately, Sky did not stop to close any doors behind her and as he stepped out of the main doors, he saw her disappear through the gates.
Sending his patronus to alert Albus, he ran across the grounds in pursuit of her.
“SKY.” He shouted, hoping to at least get her to stop. He had not meant this to happen. Severus was terrified for her. He wanted her to stay here because it was safe.
However, Sky didn’t hear him. She was too shocked at what he told her and just wanted to get away, to shut it all out, to not believe that anyone would want to do what Severus told her.
She ran so far along the road that led to Hogsmead and finally stopped, exhausted, but she still didn’t want to be here. Sky had no idea where she did want to be, only that it had to be somewhere quiet, somewhere she could think, feel safe.
Before she knew what was happening she got the horrible feeling of being pulled through something too narrow and landed in a heap on a dirty floor.
Getting to her hands and knees, she waited a moment to get her balance and stood, taking in her surroundings, wondering where she was and how she ended up here.
It seemed to be someone’s house, but it was dark, the windows were boarded up and large sheets were covering what she assumed to be furniture. The place had an eerie feeling to it as it was and she shivered. No one had been here for a long time, that much was clear, but it wasn’t the wall house, the room at the wall house wasn’t like this. Noticing a part open door, she stepped through into a hallway. It was as dusty as the room she’d just left. Walking through the house, Sky found another living room and a kitchen, a library and what appeared to be a study. The rooms were all quite large but still creepy with the dustsheets and dim light.
She decided to look upstairs, more out of curiosity then anything else. While she was exploring, she wasn’t thinking about what Severus told her. There were two bathrooms, three large bedrooms and a slightly smaller room with another room leading of that. This room seemed different to the others, not so creepy, almost familiar.
“Now you know you’re cracking up.” Sky said to herself nervously.
Her stone was glowing too, a soft light rose colour.
Sky pulled out her wand and the end was glowing in the same soft pink. Arcing her wand in the same way she did each time she entered the wall to meet a different founder, the dust sheets disappeared, the windows were clean and let in light, and the room and everything in it was spotless.
There was a brightly painted wardrobe and chest of drawers, a small bed and what looked to her like another even smaller bed. This one had wooden bars round the sides of it, the head and foot being solid, with unicorn foals painted on them.
Again, she got that feeling of familiarity. Looking into the barred bed, she found a furry animal. She didn’t know what kind of animal it was but it was pink and fluffy. Sky picked it up and held it to her cheek. “Ted.” She whispered, then held the toy away from her, looking at it strangely. ’Where had that come from?’ Never the less, she kept hold of the toy as she opened drawers and the wardrobe. There were loads of clothes, but they were tiny. Tiny dresses and tiny socks, cardigans, jumpers, shoes and coats, all in miniature, all strange to her but at the same time familiar.
Even more curious now she began to arc her wand in the other rooms. Some had a familiar feeling and some did not. The library, two of the bedrooms, both bathrooms and one of the living rooms came under the not category. One bedroom made her feel strange, nice strange, as if she’d been here before and felt good. It was the same with the second living room, the study too made her feel as though she’d been here before and safe. The kitchen, once it was clean and bright felt homely, welcoming, and right. She couldn’t explain it to herself but nor could she shake off the feeling.
“Shit.” Severus growled as Albus and Minerva came racing to catch him up.
Where is she?” Panted a breathless Minerva.
“If I knew that I would be with her by now. She apperated.”
“Really? I had no idea you taught her h …”
“I didn’t, it was an involuntary apperation Albus. I doubt even she knows where she is. What the hell am I supposed to do now?”
“I is finding her Sir. Now we is bonded I can finds the miss anywhere.”
“Effy.” The potions Master exclaimed. “Can you take me to her right now?”
“Yes Sir, Effy can do that, but you is have to hold Effy’s hand if I’s taking you with me.”
Severus wasted no time and grabbed the little elf’s hand. “Wait inside for me Albus, I’ll be back with her as soon as possible.”
Effy snapped her fingers and Severus Effy appeared in front of a very surprised Sky.
“Severus, Effy, how …what …”
“What did you expect? That I would sit at home and leave you to decide whether or not to find your own way back?”
“N …no. I don’t know how I even got here, or where I am.”
Effy, who’d been looking around the room in wonder looked at Sky. “You is not knowing where you is miss?”
“No, why? Should I?”
“You is home miss.” “Hogwarts is her home Effy, not this strange house. Hogwarts and the wall.”
“Yes Sir, but this is her heart home, the place she is being born. The home she is living at with her mother and grandparents, until she is taken that is. This is where you would be growing up like normal witch and wizard children, where Effy is you elf nanny. Is much of love in this house till you is gone miss.”
“That’s why it feels so strange, familiar almost.”
Effy nodded, a knowing smile on her face.
Severus looked around the room. “So this is your ancestral home, have you looked round?”
“Yeah, some rooms have a good feel to them, others I don’t recognise at all. One room upstairs, it has a bed with bars, it’s strange and familiar at the same time, and this, I don’t know what it is, but it feels like I know it.”
“Is Ted miss. You is calling you teddy, Ted. You is never sleeping without it. You is even holding it now. You is maybe feeling you is belonging here yes?”
“I don’t know Effy, I don’t know what I should feel like. So this is where my mother lived too?”
“Yes miss, and your grandparents. Many generations of Morrigan’s is living here.”
“Are there any portraits Effy? Something that she can see.”
“No Sir, the Ministry is got them all. Same with all documents and things as is valuable. They is holding them in one of there departments.”
“They have my mum’s things? Everything?”
The elf nodded and Sky looked to Severus. “I want them back Severus. I want to see what my mum looked like, I want to know if I look like her.”
“We shall be able to do that when we go to the Ministry hearing. One way or another, we shall prove who you are and the Ministry be damned.”
“But for now, I would prefer you to come back to Hogwarts with me. I did not mean to frighten you Sky, I meant only to make you wish to stay safe, safe at Hogwarts, or in the wall with the founders.”
“But what you told me, was it true?”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
“You should be doing as the master says miss, go back to Hogwarts. Soon aurors is coming, you is breaching their wards when you is coming here.”
No sooner had Effy finished speaking then they heard the familiar sound of apparition outside.
“They are here Sky, we must go. Once we have spoken with the Ministry we can come back here, but for now we must leave.”
Sky felt the wards being taken down at the front and back of the house. “I …I can’t, I don’t know how.”
Severus pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her.
Effy popped out when she saw him take hold of her.
“I shall apparate us both, hold tight.” Just as Severus was apparating, his left arm started to burn.
Instead of arriving at the Gates of Hogwarts as he planned to do, they found themselves in a dingy basement, surrounded by Deatheaters and facing the Dark Lord.
“Well done Ssnape, you have brought my little girl to visit.”
“Just do what I tell you, keep your eyes to the floor and speak only when spoken to.” He whispered to Sky hurriedly.
Taking her arm, he led her toward the throne and pushed her to her knees. As Severus lowered his head in supplication to Voldemort, he placed his hand between her shoulders and pressed her, face down to the floor.
“Ssnape, you may rise.”
Severus got to his feet and Sky made to stand with him. She was put out when he shoved her back down again. “Stay down,” He growled. “You may rise only when the master tells you to do so.”
“What? Why?” She asked but was cut off when Severus put a hand on her neck and shoved her down again.
“It sseems my little girl has sspirit Snape, you have not yet broken her.”
“It is not for lack of trying my lord, she is stubborn and has been spoiled, following an accident with a Re’em.”
“I heard about that, you are a very foolish girl to tangle with such a creature, yet you ssurvived. You have caussed me much bother girl. You have burnt my wand, caused me pain, and lived, when you should have died a long time ago. You have also killed sseveral of my most faithful followers and countered a cursse cast by me when it should not have been possible. Sssomehow you have been healing Sssnape, oh yesss I know it was you, and now you have his runt in your belly. Your list of wrongs against me are numerous, are you ready now to atone for those wrongs and serve only me?”
Sky was trembling badly. She didn’t want to be here any longer. Severus had been right, she should never have come. Now this man was talking to her like this, telling her she caused him bother, that she should be dead. He was supposed to care for her, love her, but he wanted her to serve him and she didn’t want him to be like this with her.
She started to rise again while he waited for her to answer, but Severus held her down.
“I’m not doing anything while I’m stuck down here in the dirt.”
She felt a hand slap across the side of her head.
“OW! What was that for?”
“Do not dare speak to our lord in such a manner.” Severus growled at her.
‘She’s going to get us both killed.’
To both their surprise, Voldemort started to laugh.
“Only someone of my own blood would dare to speak to me so, or a fool. Which are you girl? You may rise.”
Sky stood up, a scowl on her face as she brushed herself down. “I’m not a fool, but I’m not sure I want to be the same blood as you either.”
Once again, Severus slapped her across the head.
“Will you stop doing that please, it hurts.”
“Leave it Snape, let her be.”
“If you so wish my lord.” Severus bowed slightly to Voldemort. He hated having to strike his wife, but he needed to keep up the pretence or they would both die.
“So, you wanted to meet your daddy, and what do you think now that you have? Are you willing to serve me?”
Sky wanted to scream at him, tell him no, she wouldn’t, but she’d promised Severus she’d help him spy until she could stop Voldemort one way or another.
“Okay, if that’s what you want, but I don’t want you to hurt me or Severus anymore. I won’t serve you if you do that.”
Once again, the Dark Lord laughed as Severus screwed his eyes shut, waiting for the blast of green light to hit them both.
“I only punish those who betray me, will you betray me girl?”
“Not if you promise not to be mean any more. I know you tried to kill me, I know you wanted me dead. You killed my mum too and I never got to meet her. I don’t understand why you did those things, but I’m not just having Severus’ baby, I’m having your grandson. I won’t let you do anything to hurt him, not ever.”
“You push your luck girl, I decide who lives and who does not.”
“Severus, how me again how you take her, I want to see her beg you for mercy as you ream her hard, then perhaps I mi …”
“Nooo.” Sky screamed. Her wand flew into her hand and it and the stone glowed fiercely. A fiery deep orange glow starting at her feet and spiralling its way up to cover her. Sky’s face was a mask of terror but she held fast as the fire that surrounded her spun round and round her. She saw Severus and Voldemort both back away from her as the heat from the fire grew more intense. Sky felt nothing from the blaze, only protected.
“Do ssomething you fool.” Voldemort demanded of Severus. “Otherwise I will curse you from one end of this country to the next.”
“Severus.” She called. “Please, if you don’t mean me any harm, step into the flame, it wont hurt you if your not gonna hurt me. You’ll be safe in here.” She held her hand out towards him.
Severus was unsure. He in no way wanted to hurt his wife, but at the same time he needed to make the Dark Lord think he was a faithful Deatheater. The pleading look on Sky’s face was more then he could tolerate and he took a step toward her.
“Kill her Snape, prove to me that you are a true follower.”
Severus looked at the Dark Lord disbelievingly. He would have done most anything if it would have helped the cause if the light, but to kill his wife? Never.
He took another step and Voldemort lifted his wand, but he hesitated slightly, unsure which of them to take aim at.
Suddenly he turned his wand on Severus. As he shouted the avada kedavra Sky grabbed a shocked Severus’ hand and pulled him into the flames with her, just before he was struck by the flash of green light sent by Voldemort.
“A door, we need a door.” Sky cried desperately to Severus.
Quickly, before Voldemort could aim another avada, Severus grabbed her round the waist and half dragged, half carried her to a door in the wall to their right.
Voldemort was screaming at his Deatheaters to stop them, but most of them had encountered her during her last visit and moved sluggishly, fearing her as much as their lords’ wrath.
So in a ball of flames, Sky pulled open the door and they shot through it, slamming it closed behind them. The flames died down quickly and they found themselves in the wall living room. The pair of them sunk to the floor, shocked at what just occurred and neither able to speak for the moment.
“That was …something.” Severus gasped as he turned to Sky. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, you?”
“I believe so. What was that spell you invoked?”
“Haven’t a clue, it just sort of happened.”
“Well I am extremely glad it did ‘just sort of happen’, otherwise we would both be dead by now.”
“You don’t say, I kinda got that impression myself. Who does he think he is? Bloody miserable bugger.”
Severus let out a snort.
“It’s not funny Severus.”
“I was not suggesting it was, but out of all the many names I have heard the Dark Lord referred to as, ‘Bloody miserable bugger’ is not one of them.”
Yeah well, I don’t know any worse ones. I’ll ask Sal, he knows loads. Then I’ll call him something really bad.”
“Do not bother, I would prefer you did not speak like a common whore. Your vocabulary is fine as it is.”
“So what do we do now? And what’s a whore?”
He glanced sideways at her last question. “Never mind. As to what we do next, we inform the Headmaster that you have returned, then we inform him of what just occurred. If you prefer I can see him alone, you need a bath, you’re filthy.”
She scrambled up and went to look in the mirror. Her once blue gown was now covered in dust, dirt and grime. Her face was streaked with dirt, her hair was a filthy rats nest and she’d lost a shoe somewhere in all the kafuffle.
“I’ll have one when we get back.” She waved her hand in front of herself and she looked as she did this morning. “I still feel yucky.” She moved to the bedroom door and closed it, keeping her hand on the handle. “Ready? Oh, just a minute.” She waved her hand at Severus. “You didn’t look much better then me.” She told him as he narrowed his eyes and looked down at himself.
“At least we are presentable.”
“Oh my, I am so glad you found her Severus. Sky, you gave us quite a fright when you disappeared like that.”
“Sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose. It just sort of happened.”
“Not to worry, at least you are back safely with us. I wonder when you will be called.”
“We already have Albus. We have just now returned from our …visit.” He raised his eyebrows at Sky as he spoke. “Things did not go quite as planned, I cannot however say that I am sorry.”
“What happened?”
“Severus explained what took place when they were summoned and how they escaped by the skin of their teeth.
Albus turned to look at Sky. “That was some spell Sky, what was it?”
“I don’t now, but it was Dark Magic. I’m sorry.”
“In this instance, apologies are not necessary. Even if it is traced, the Ministry will not be able to do anything about it. It occurred in Voldemort’s presence and they have no access to him. You do realise that neither of you will be able to return now. Though what will happen with you when you are called again Severus I do not know.”
“He can go in the wall, meanwhile I’ll talk with Sal. We might be able to come up with something to get rid of that mark. Even if we can’t, we might be able to stop it from working.”
Severus was about to make a scathing remark but thought better of it. His wife had many hidden talents, maybe she could do something after all.
“I wish you every success with that endeavour. It will not be an easy one, I can assure you.”
“I know Albus, but Sal’s the original Slytherin, if he can’t figure something out I’ll be surprised.”
Suddenly Severus gasped and grabbed his left arm. “He is angry Albus. He wants me back there now.”
Sky grabbed his arm and tried to pull him to the door.
He resisted. “Perhaps I should go, I may find …”
“NO.” She yelled at him. “No Severus please. He’ll kill you as soon as he sees you.”
“She is right Severus, listen to her. Go to the wall, let her work with Salazar, see if they can come up with something.”
“Severus was in so much pain now that he didn’t argue. Sky led him into the wall and the pain left him immediately.
