LEECH
Chapter 45
“Why not?”
“Because it is too personal. Now forget it.” Severus demanded.
“Fine, let me try your wand then.”
“That will not be necessary, we already know what the result will be.”
“But I want to have a go. It’s not fair, especially since no one ever tells me what they feel as they actually get their magic back.”
With a frown, he reluctantly handed over his wand and watched as she performed extremely powerful spells, charms and hexes at a dummy the ROR had created.
He wanted to try out his magic too. He felt so powerful he thought he could cast the killing curse without summoning the slightest bit of hatred.
He growled, stood up, and walked over to where she was practicing. He lifted his hand and aimed it at the dummy. A flash of blue light erupted from his hand and blasted the dummy to bits.
As Kathy and Albus stared at him astonished, he stared at his hand equally astounded.
“Did… did you see that? Did you? Did you see? I didn’t need my wand, Merlin.” Severus had always had the aptitude to use controlled wandless magic, but never to this extent. He tried various spells on the recreated dummy, all wandless, and all equally powerful.
Severus was so taken with his new found ability, that after saying goodnight to Kathy later in the evening, he made his way back up to the ROR and cast a long series of dark spells, including Crucio’s and Avada’s, at animated dummies, watching as they fell to floor and writhed, or literally melted in a flash of bright green light. He couldn’t help but wonder if this new power, temporary though it was, would be enough to finally kill Voldemort. Especially with the force of his wand behind it.
As soon as she finished her breakfast on Saturday, Kathy made her way to the staff room to find Professor Binns. She told him the relative parts of what had occurred the night before, and promised to let him have her notes once she’d recorded the latest events. Minus the more personal things that Severus had read. She would have to re-write those bits.
Most of her morning was spent bringing the notes up to date, then she got ready for her outing with Severus.
She was relieved and disappointed that he left her at her door last night, but it had been an emotional evening and he probably thought it best they both got some sleep. She had no idea he’d gone back to the ROR that evening.
Severus knocked on Kathy’s door and entered, not waiting for a reply.
“Hello, I’m just putting my coat on. Cape.” She amended, calling from the bedroom. “Who do you all wear such odd clothes?”
“What you consider odd, is perfectly normal in the wizarding world. Mostly it is the muggleborns that tend to favour muggle clothing out of school. A true wizard will only wear muggle attire if it is necessary to venture into the non-magical community.”
“I’m a muggle, why do I have to wear robes?”
“You are not a muggle Kathy, you are… unique.”
“What a nice way of putting it, thank you. I’m ready.” Taking his arm, they headed out the dungeons, Kathy still complaining about the steps. “If I ever have a house of my own again, I’m having a bungalow. Not a single step in sight.” She said as they entered the main Hall.
“Severus?” They had just cleared the gates and were heading down the track that led to Hogsmead. “When do I leave here, and what happens when I do?”
He considered her question for a few minutes. Kathy started to think he hadn’t heard her. But he’d been thinking about it since her ‘bungalow’ comment on the dungeon stairs. “To be honest, I don’t know the answer to either of those questions. I assume it will be down to you to decide what you wish to do once this is all… over. As for when, it all depends on circumstances. As yet we do not know what will happen, or when the opportunity will arise for you to… Leech the Dark Lord.” If Severus had his way, the opportunity would never arise. The thought of her risking her life at the hands of that despot chilled him to the bone.
“Oh. Still, lets just enjoy today, forget about old snakeface eh?”
Severus forced a smile as he looked down at her. “Snakeface?”
“Yeah, snakeface. So, what are we gonna do first? I can‘t wait to get there. Can we go to the Shrieking Shack? Albus said it‘s haunted. I don‘t want to go inside, but we could still take a look.”
He didn’t want to ever see the Shrieking Shack again as long as he lived, but he would go for Kathy’s sake.
First he took her to the apothecary, he was short of some of the ingredients he used to make the potion for her gloves. And that unforgettable bodysuit. Hell, he would give almost anything to see her in that without the benefit of spells and potions.
Kathy was fascinated in the apothecary’s. The smells, sights and openly displayed ingredients were like nothing she’d seen before. Although this was new to her, she still had a woman’s eye for detecting ingredients that were passed their best, and twice she stopped the assistant when he tried to place less than stellar items into the bag when Severus wasn’t looking.
She kept a close eye on the man after that.
Kathy might have thought Severus hadn’t noticed, but he was watching everything that was going on. Had she not corrected the assistant, he would have removed them from the bag himself and demanded replacements before paying. As it was, he was proud that she showed a penchant for recognising that certain of the items were not up to standard, and that she wasn’t afraid to step in, examine the goods, and demand only the best.
Next was Scrivensgaft’s, where Severus purchased a large amount of parchment, notebooks, quills, and inks. Like in the apothecary’s, he reduced the purchases and slipped them into his pocket.
She was lost to everything when they entered Honeydukes. Kathy had a naturally sweet tooth, but for most of her life food had been rationed, and sweets were not high on the agenda of necessities. As far as the orphanage was concerned, the only time she ever got sweets there was when Tomtom bought them for her.
She eyed the mint creams covertly, saying nothing as Severus perused the shelves of various chocolate. She didn’t have any money so she couldn’t buy anything. Disappointed, she tried not to look at anything else, instead she stared out the window while Severus made his purchases and escorted her from the shop.
“Are you ready for a drink? The three Broomsticks is directly across the street, we can decide what to have for lunch while we are in there.”
“Sounds good to me, do I look… normal?”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Normal, like witches look? I don’t want to be the odd one out when we get in there.”
“You are perfectly acceptable, don’t worry. Besides, Rosmerta does not discriminate and many of the students who frequent the inn wear muggle attire. You would pass for a witch any day, so long as you remember you do not have a wand. Of course I could always add a few warts if you prefer, just for authenticity.”
“I don’t think so thank you. You know, I hate that I can only use other peoples wands. It would be nice if one of those Albus had would have worked.”
“Ah, the spares. They are a collection of lost and forgotten wands, some are so old it is a wonder they haven’t sprouted a branch or two.”
]
“You did magic without a wand. I never thought to try that myself.”
He looked at her astonished. “For Merlin’s sake do not try it here. Wait until we are back at Hogwarts.”
“Alright, alright. It was only an idea.”
Severus opened the door to the inn and stood aside to allow her to enter first.
This was something she felt comfortable with, entering a pub. Only inside was a lot different to what she was used to and she faltered after a couple of steps.
Apart from the fact they drew immediate stares from the patrons, Snape was not known for his sociability, and Kathy accompanying him made them both a matter of curiosity.
“Hello Professor. Usual is it?”
Kathy turned to see an attractive, buxom, older woman behind the bar, a cheery smile on her face that reached her eyes.
“No, thank you Rosmerta. Two Butterbeers and a menu if you would. Perhaps a quiet table as well if you have one.”
“Of course Professor, follow me.”
They followed the Landlady to the far end of the pub, Kathy growing increasingly embarrassed as three elderly patrons were politely told to clear off, before wiping the table and offering it to her and Severus.
