A/N: Thank you so much everyone for the great reviews. Please keep them coming, especially as I’m finally bringing Severus and Lucy together. (You won’t get that/those chapter/s for a while yet.) and good reviews encourage good smut. At least with me. lol

Chapter 45
Draco had a free period last lesson Wednesday, and since he was the only Slytherin in his year who did not take ancient runes, he made his way to the common room. He was pleasantly surprised to find Lucy in there, alone.
She was sprawled on one of the sofas, engrossed in a book when he entered and was not aware of anyone arriving.
Draco had noticed a change in her since yesterday, nothing he could put his finger on, but she seemed rather preoccupied. Maybe he could find out what was bothering her and offer some solace, that was bound to make her see him in a new light.
Lucy jumped a mile when warm breath tickled the side of her neck. She looked round and found Draco kneeling behind the arm of the sofa, blowing on her neck, a wide grin on his face. “What do you think you’re doing lizard boy?” She demanded, leaning away and scowling at him.
Draco pretended to look hurt. “Nothing, you just seemed… sad. You wont talk to me, so I tried to get your attention another way. I’m sorry if my presence offends you to the point where you cannot even bare to be in the same room as me.” He said, doing his best to appear wounded. Look, I know we got off to a bad start, and yes I admit it was my fault, but we have to spend the next two years together whether you like it or not, and I for one would prefer if we could at least try and be friends. I’m not always a… what was that term you used, ‘ponce’.” He pleaded. “In fact I’m rather nice most of the time. Oh, and don‘t call me lizard boy.”
“Up yourself as well by the sound of it.” Lucy retorted. “Draco; genus; small flying lizard with a long snout from southern Asia that flies from tree to tree,”
He raised an eyebrow and walked round to sit on the sofa, lifting her feet and laying them on his lap. “Maybe, but that’s the way I was raised. I cannot help my lineage, any more than you can help yours. As for my name, t is also a dragon, as in Draconia What are you reading?”
“History of Magic.” She replied, studying the young blonde.
“You poor sod, Binns set you homework I suppose.”
“Yeah, but it’s… never mind. Are you gonna sit there all afternoon watching me? Surely you have something better to do.”
“Just some advanced potions, but it’s almost done and doesn’t have to be in until Friday. Besides, I rather like watching you.”
“I noticed, stop it. Every time I look up you seem to be watching me, did your mother never teach you it’s rude to stare?”
“Of course, but I can’t help myself.”
“Get lost.” She said softly, turning her gaze back to her book. But she could feel his eyes on her and shifted uncomfortably.
Draco stayed in his seat, his eyes trained on her constantly.
“Malfoy will you please go away. I can feel you looking at me.” She gave him a kick with her foot, not hard, but firm enough to cause him to grab her ankles for a moment.
“Hey, quit that. Besides, I like it here, and I like looking at you.”
Lucy fought to stop her lips from twitching. The git really was getting on her nerves, but she was finding it increasingly difficult not to smile at his blatant attempts at getting her attention. Eventually she started to giggle. “Look, go away. I can’t concentrate.”
He grinned. “I noticed. Be careful you don’t smile.”
That did it, a smile broke out on her face and she started to laugh. “Argh, I hate you.” She chuckled, bending her knees and sitting up.
When Blaize entered the common room at the end of class, he was undecided as to whether or not he should be pleased that Draco and Lucy were getting along so well. Much as he disliked the animosity she seemed to have towards Draco, he felt a strong sense of resentment seeing the pair sitting together on the sofa, laughing heartily at something only they knew of.
Pansy and Millicent entered the room and Pansy hackles immediately rose at the sight of her boyfriend cosied up on the sofa with the new girl.
“Draco.” She crooned, doing her best to appear unperturbed as she sashayed over to him.
Blaize smirked inwardly when Draco’s head snapped up and saw Pansy heading his way.
Lucy looked a bit uncomfortable when Pansy shot her a cold glare, but stayed where she was, unaware that this girl considered Draco to be her property, or that the two of them were occasionally intimate.
Draco schooled his expression to one of mild interest. As far as he was concerned, Pansy was convenient, but they were not an item, no matter how much Pansy would like them to be. At the same time he did not want to alienate her, they had been friends a long time and they lost their virginity together. Still, she needed to learn he was not monogamous to her and would make friends with whoever he chose. “Pansy, you never told me your new roommate had such a great sense of humour. You girls must have a whale of a time when you’re together.”
Pansy stared at Draco, unsure of how to react. “I can’t say I’ve noticed, we’ve all been rather busy seeing as how it is the first week of term.” She said haughtily.
“Yeah, some more than others.” Lucy commented, rather enjoying the discomfort on the girls face. “Still, some are making an effort, Daphne and Tracy seem nice, and of course Blaize and even Draco here, isn’t that right Draco?” Lucy linked her arm through Draco’s and smiled at him gooey eyed, more to annoy Pansy than anything else. It was obvious the girl didn’t like her and Lucy was not averse to stirring the cauldron on occasions. She was Slytherin through and through whether she realised it or not.
Draco sensed the tension between the two witches, but he was determined to gain Lucy’s friendship, and more of possible, so he smiled back at her. “We are indeed. You really should make time Pansy, help Lucy settle in. I’m sure that between you and Millie you can make her feel welcome.”
Pansy’s cheeks flamed, and she threw a tight smile Lucy’s way before turning her attention back to Draco. “Of course Draco, you know me, always willing to help the underdog.” She said in a sickly sweet voice.
At that comment Lucy’s temper took hold, her eyes flashed angrily, a murderous look on her face. “What did you call me?” She asked in a low, dangerous voice.
Pansy looked at her rather startled. She did not expect the new girl to be quite so volatile, instead assuming her to be rather weak willed and inadequate. “Well you are aren’t you, I mean, you don’t even take classes with the rest of us because you don’t have the education.” She retorted.
Lucy removed her arm from Draco and stood, taking a step forward so she was face to face with Pansy. “I am not an underdog, and I am educated believe me. As for not taking classes with you lot, I might not have had the chance to learn what you lot have, but I can, and will do whatever I need to if someone gets in my way, or annoys the fuck out of me like you’re doing right now.”
Blaize, hoping to prevent a cat fight between the two witches, stepped forward. “Leave it Lucy, it’s not worth losing points or earning detention just because someone said something you don’t like. Let it go.” He said tensely, taking her hand and tugging at her. He had no idea how powerful Lucy might be, or whether she could hold her own if it came to the girls duelling or even physically fighting, but he did not want Snape entering the common room to find them brawling. “It’s almost suppertime, take your things to your room and meet me back here.
Lucy glared at Pansy, who in turn glared back, her wand gripped firmly in her hand.
“Come on Lucy.” Blaize ground through his teeth. “Back off, she’s pretty handy with that wand of hers.”
Lucy smirked, her temper still holding her. “Yeah, that piece of string she’s holding looks deadly to me.” She replied, eyeing the other girl with a smirk.
Pansy looked down aghast at the length of twine in her hand where her wand had been. The others in the room were also astonished, most having clearly seen Pansy holding her wand and expecting hexes to fly at any moment.
Lucy stuck her nose in the air, yanked her hand from Blaize’s grip and flounced from the room to leave her book in the dorm. When she came back down, Lucy refused to look at anyone as they gathered in small groups, discussing what happened and examining the string that had once been the crying Pansy’s wand. Lucy willed it to change back as she stepped through the portal, Blaize and Draco hot on her heels.
“What the hell did you do back there Lucy?” Blaize demanded.
“I didn’t do anything.” She retorted, keeping her head down and walking at a clip.
“Yes you did, you changed Pansy’s wand. How did you do it?” Draco wanted to know.
“No I did not. She probably had the string in her pocket all the time and pulled it out by accident.”
Blaize grabbed her arm and halted her. The two wizards steered her backwards into an empty classroom and closed the door. “Lucy we all saw Pansy’s wand, now what did you do?” The darker boy asked more calmly.
“I told you, nothing. Go ask her yourself, she’s probably found it in another pocket or something.”
Draco and Blaize looked at each other, then back at Lucy. “You can tell us Lucy, we won’t tell anyone if you don’t want us to.” Draco cajoled.
Lucy looked at the two wizards, but she didn’t know them well enough to place her trust in them. “Like I said, go ask her. I did nothing.” She lied, sticking her hands in her pockets and studying the floor. Her temper had abated and now she was left feeling guilty for losing control, and uncomfortable at being cross examined by these two. She was worried now that Snape would get wind of what happened and call her on it. “Look, can we just forget about it, whatever happened, happened. It was just a silly argument and I don’t know why everyone’s making such a fuss over a piece of string. Anyway, she shouldn’t have said what she did. Can I go now?”
They waited until the sound of passing students ceased in the corridor, then the trio left the classroom and headed for the Great Hall.
