Harry and Draco spent a quiet and happy week at the
Weasleys’ before Harry’s birthday. Even
though there was quite a lot going on, Mrs. Weasley still insisted on throwing
Harry a birthday party.
James wasn’t supposed to Apparate on his own, so he did a
Side-Along with Lucius. When they
appeared just outside the yard James swooned and fell over. Lucius panicked and Sirius ran to the door
yelling for help.
“I’m all right,” James insisted as he sat up and took a few
deep breaths. “I just got a little
light-headed.”
“Are you sure?” Lucius asked looking very concerned.
“I’m sure,” James assured him and slowly got to his
feet. “Lyssandra told us this might
happen. That’s why I’m not supposed to
Apparate any more than I have to.”
Lucius helped him to the door where they had to answer the
secret question to be allowed in. Most
everyone agreed that a secret question was kind of pointless since all one
would need to do is study the person they were impersonating, but Arthur
insisted on it.
James claimed an armchair in the corner of the living room
for himself. After he said happy birthday
to Harry he pulled out a little black bag and got out a padded foot stool, and
a battery operated standing fan. It took
him a while to get the fan in the perfect place, but when he did he plopped
down in the char and didn’t intend to move unless he had to.
Remus arrived looking more ragged than ever. He brought news that Igor Karkaroff’s body
had been found, which didn’t surprise anyone.
Voldemort was hunting down anyone who had betrayed him, which was
something that haunted Lucius daily.
Molly chided Remus for talking about such awful things during Harry’s
party and served the cake.
Fleur Delacouer, who surprisingly enough was there with
Bill, moved toward James’ corner. “You
know, it is a bit stuffy in here,” she said as she reached for the fan. “If we could just move this so the whole room
can enjoy the breeze-“
James emitted a deep, feral growl that made her back
up.
“His Highness says if you touch that fan he’ll have you
beheaded,” Sirius informed her. He was
pretty sure James would actually do it too.
Fleur huffed but returned to her seat. “I don’t know why you’re giving him such
special treatment,” she commented when Lucius took a slice of cake over to him
and set up a little tray on his lap with a big glass of lemonade.
“Being pregnant is very uncomfortable,” Molly answered. It was clear that she didn’t like Fleur very
much either. “Anyone who has been
through it would understand.”
Lucius chuckled a little.
“It also tends to make one very temperamental. A few nights ago Kreacher got an iron fire
poker through his forehead.”
Hermione frowned, but didn’t say anything. “Well he shouldn’t have laughed at me when I
tried to pick something up off the floor,” James grumbled. “And are you calling me temperamental?”
“No, dear,” Lucius answered quickly.
“Don’t patronize me!”
“Of course not dear…
Would you like a foot rub?”
“All right….” James pouted, but he seemed to be pacified for
the moment. He relaxed when Lucius knelt
down in front of the chair and started massaging his feet. Lucius knew that if he didn’t love James as
much as he did he would already have lost his mind.
The Hogwarts letters arrived a little while later. Molly sighed as the children opened the
letters to see what books they’d need.
“I suppose we’ll have to go to Diagon Alley soon. Perhaps we can go on Sunday if Arthur still
has the day off. I don’t want to go
without him.”
“I’ll go,” Sirius volunteered.
“So will I,” James offered.
Lucius glared at him and James glared back. “How many times do we have to have this
conversation? I’m quite aware of the
fact that I’m pregnant, but I don’t think a little shopping trip will endanger
me too much.”
Lucius sighed and gave in.
He really didn’t like to argue.
“Fine, just please be careful.
Wait, isn’t your appointment with Lyssandra on Sunday?”
James shrugged. “It
is, but I can reschedule.”
Arthur did have the day off, and he managed to get Ministry
cars for them. The cars took them to the
Leaky Cauldron where they met Hagrid and James.
Lucius didn’t like James traveling by himself, but he was well armed.
Diagon Alley had changed since the last time Harry had been
there. The place was half deserted and
purple posters were up all over the place that had the same information as the
pamphlets the Ministry sent out. The
other shoppers huddled in small groups and hardly looked at each other.
Molly was torn between wanting to get their shopping done
quickly and wanting to stick together.
In the end, she, Arthur, and Ginny went to the bookstore to get
everyone’s books while the rest of them went to Madame Malkin’s for new
robes. Hagrid waited outside while James
went in with them. James was careful to
keep his eye out for anything suspicious.
One thing he did notice was Draco’s old companions and thugs
walking down the street with a new boy he didn’t recognize. Draco noticed it too, but he pretended he
didn’t. Even though he’d always known
they weren’t his real friends it stung a little to see that he had been
replaced so quickly.
They ran into the little group again on the way out. Draco knew the boy as Thomas Nott. The three glared at the blonde coldly. “You’re dead Malfoy,” Nott snarled.
Draco tried not to show his fear, but he sidestepped to hide
behind Harry. “Not if I have anything to
say about it,” Harry said as he returned their gaze without even
flinching.
“We’ll see about that,” Nott mumbled as they strode off.
Draco reached out to grab Harry’s hand. Harry didn’t pull away, but rather squeezed
back lightly.
Just then Molly and Arthur emerged from the bookstore and
headed over. “Everything all right?”
Molly asked.
“Nothing we couldn’t handle,” James answered before the kids
could say anything.
“Excellent,” Molly replied, but she didn’t seem to be any
less worried. “Are you all right,
James? Do you need to sit?”
James shrugged. “I’m
a little hungry, but I’ll live.”
“Well then, next stop is the Apothecary, and then we’ll drop
in on Fred and George.”
Neither Harry nor Ron picked up any potion ingredients
because they were fairly certain they wouldn’t be taking Potions anymore. Snape was very particular about who he let
into his N.E.W.T level classes. Even
though Snape had lightened up some, neither boy could really say they were
disappointed.
Fred and George’s joke shop was amazing. Unlike the rest of the stores, theirs was
absolutely packed. The group made their
way in through the crowd and stared wide-eyed at the shelves. They saw many things the twins had developed
while in school, and many more new things that were no less than amazing.
Fred and George came over to greet them and give everyone a
grand tour. They even took them to the
back room where they were working on putting shield charms on various articles
of clothing. They’d first put one on a
hat, and then the Ministry had decided to order the items in large
numbers. Even Molly, who’d been very
much against their joke shop from the beginning, had to admit they were doing
well.
Severus walked up the stone streets of Naz’rhiad, his knees
trembling under him. He couldn’t
remember the last time he’d been so nervous.
Dumbledore had made the appointment and contacted him as promised. But then Lyssandra had a cancellation and his
appointment had gotten moved up to that Sunday.
He found the building right next to a blacksmith’s shop and
knocked softly on the door. The blonde
elf woman answered and gave him a bright smile.
“Hello, Severus, you’re right on time.
Come in.”
Severus followed the midwife into her cozy little
office. She took him straight to the
examination room and motioned for him to sit down. “So, Dumbledore tells me you’ve been experimenting
and you think you might’ve gotten yourself pregnant.”
Severus nodded and swallowed hard. “Yes, it looks that way.”
“How long ago did this happen?”
“Eleven days,” Severus answered. He had been counting the days as they passed
at an agonizingly slow pace. He’d gone
over every scenario over and over in his mind.
“Disrobe and lie back,” Lyssandra directed.
Severus reluctantly started to undress. He’d spent most of his life with very few
people ever seeing him not fully dressed, but lately the number was
growing. As soon as he was down to his
underwear he lay back on the examination table.
Lyssandra put her hands on his lower stomach and poked
around. “Hmmm…” she said and she
motioned for him to sit up. She handed
him a large vial half full of a bright purple liquid. “Go into the bathroom and urinate a little
into the bottle. If the potion turns
pink we need to have a little chat.”
Severus did as told, his stomach twisting in knots. What was he going to do if it turned
pink? Dumbledore had told him to tell
Sirius right away, but that was easier said than done. He frowned when the liquid immediately
started to brighten.
The next five minutes seemed to drag on forever, but at the
end of those five minutes Severus found himself staring at a vial of bright
lilac liquid. “I’m pregnant aren’t I?”
he frowned.
Lyssandra nodded.
“Yes Severus, I think it’s safe to say that you are. But we have a little problem.”
“Problem?” Severus’ eyebrows shot up. He suddenly wondered what a stroke felt
like. “What kind of problem?”
Lyssandra sighed softly and sat back in her chair. “Severus, so far male pregnancy has been
rare, and only possible for a special few.
Those who possess the natural ability have something in their genetic
code that lets their bodies stop producing typical male hormones, and start
producing a very unique hormonal cocktail.
You did this artificially with a potion.
While a positive pregnancy test shows you do have at least some of this
hormone in your system, I can’t tell if it’s just the potion at work. I’m not sure your body can produce the
pregnancy sustaining hormones it needs for this to work.”
Severus felt like he was going to cry. “So I’m going to lose the baby?”
Lyssandra was quiet for a moment. “I really don’t know, Severus. This is new territory for all of us. Perhaps if you can convince a naturally
pregnant male to donate a little blood I can produce synthetic hormones for
you.”
Severus nodded and wondered if James would be willing to
help him. But first he had to decide if
he even wanted to keep the baby, and that would depend on Sirius’ reaction.
“Thank you,” he mumbled and he dressed and headed home. At least he knew now that his potion worked,
and he had a lot of thinking to do.
