"What do you mean complications?" Draco asked angrily. Draco was barely able to stand for more than five minutes on a good day, and yet he'd been standing guard for fifteen while Hermione was being evaluated. He couldn't bring himself to leave and his vigilance made the Head Healer nervous. If he had to watch Hermione swallow yet another potion Draco wasn't sure what he was going to do.
Hermione wasn't too far from being angry herself. It had something to do with the number of disgusting potions, spells, and the lack of sleep due to her early wake up call. Now the healer was wringing his hands under the combined force of both of their glares informing them that Hermione situation was by no means over.
"We can't predict how the dark magic Hermione was exposed to, or more specifically the time she was exposed to it, could affect her in the future. It's something we will have to monitor."
"What about Draco?" Hermione knew she would never forgive herself if she brought a lifetime of illness on Draco because she had been stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
"Mr. Malfoy should be ok. He was only exposed for an hour or two. The residue will work its way out of his system. You were exposed for over 24 hours. Your wounds were open, absorbing the magic..." the healer continue on, but Hermione stop listening.
Instead, she returned to her favorite past time of staring out the window. It served multiple purposes. She got to hide her face, and she didn't have to look at the anxious faces of Draco and William, the Head Healer. She had a feeling the healer was alluding to something personal about her "complications", and didn't want Draco to hear it since he wasn't her husband, or anything, really.
Hermione had only gotten to see Draco for a brief hour before the healer came in, and it was not enough time to go through so many emotions and questions that they had for each other. Hermione felt a warm hand give hers a squeeze, pulling her thoughts back to the matter at hand. She looked down for a moment, working to put a nonchalant expression on her face. Looking back up at the healer, she could tell she failed miserably.
"I understand. Can we talk about it tomorrow? Right now, I just want to rest."
The healer nodded, gave Draco a look, and then left the room in a rush.
"What a load of bollocks." Draco muttered, shaking his head.
Hermione nodded. "It's not his fault, Draco. He's just doing his job. He can't help that I'm pretty much the only person that has been through this."
"I know, I just want this over and done with." Draco gave a grin and lifted her hand to give it a swift kiss.
Hermione cupped his face and simply stared at him.
Draco met her stare for stare. He looked at her like he was reading a book: a book written in another language without a translation. Hermione found herself silently willing questions at him. She wanted to know whether she was more than a roommate. Whether when he kissed her, it meant anything or was he so intent on keeping her a friend that it was a last resort. I mean, it was pretty obvious how she felt. She didn't want him to feel any sort of obligation towards her. There were so many things she wanted to say. But the questions stuck in her throat. She couldn't ask for what she wanted, Draco had already given too much.
She traced his lips, the cut on his lower lip barely healed. Hermione might be in bad shape, but Draco looked worse. And that was only what she could see. She cringed. She was the reason he was hurt. If she hadn't been so reckless and moved out none of this would have happened.
She dropped her eyes, pulling her hand back. "I'm sorry."
Draco tried to snatch her hand back. "Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything." Draco tried reached forward to turn her face towards his but she refused. When he failed he cocked his head to the side, resisting the urge to grab her by her shoulders and shake her until she told him what was really going on in that head of hers. Then kiss her until she couldn't think at all.
Hermione mumbled something unintelligible.
"Pardon?"
"I almost got you killed." Hermione started miserably. "I would think that would be a good place to start apologizing." Hermione looked down at her hands, folded carefully on the top of the blanket. She saw the direction of the conversation in her head. She would apologize, he would scoff, they'd bicker, and then his kisses would be few and far between, the closeness lessened, his eye would wander, she'd find another Bree in the kitchen...life would go on...right?
She heard Draco give a tired laugh. "The only thing you need to apologize for is almost getting yourself killed. How could you even think of shielding me instead of escaping?"
Hermione's head shot up. That was not part of the plan. "What do you mean? And let you die? Of course I would protect you! You mean more to me then- how- how could you? I- I love-." Hermione stuttered to a stop, her face turning brilliant shade of red. Not able to run away without limping or passing out, Hermione did the only thing she could do. She stared back out the window and refused to speak.
Slowly, and with much coaxing, Draco turned her face towards him, a slight smile playing his lips. "Would it help if I said it first? I'm a stubborn git, and I should have told you this a long time ago. I haven't really had a clear moment in the past couple weeks, because you know my pride isn't easy to check."
Hermione allowed a small laugh.
Draco pushed forward so he was sitting on the edge of his chair. "It has to be amusing to those who have watched us. You're loud where I am quiet. You laugh where I scowl. You love where I question, and you are with out a doubt too good for me. And besides all of that, I have found myself head over heels in love with you." Draco took a breath, and when she did nothing but purse her lips, he continued. "It must have creeped up on me, but this feeling, its quite insistent to be acknowledged. What more, I have a feeling Ginny will look permanently smug for the rest of her life, because I'm not letting you get away again."
Hermione felt her heart pounding furiously. "Really? It's not the whole us nearly dying scenario that has your priorities mixed up?"
Draco snorted, then let out a wheezing sound of pain. "I should have told you weeks before the gala. I should have swallowed my pride back when, well, that night I found out what you-" Draco stopped, shaking his head. "Hell, had I known what was going on, I wouldn't have let you leave. I still hate myself for going to the bar and not going after you."
Hermione shrugged, forcing a laugh." I still hate you for that, too."
Draco looked at her knowingly. "I didn't sleep with Bree."
Hermione closed her eyes for a minute. "It's ok if you did. There was nothing betwe-"
Draco placed a bandaged hand over her mouth. "I did not sleep with Bree. Or any of those other tarts I brought home. It was impossible when all I could picture was you." Draco hung his head. "I'm sorry I reverted to my petty Hogwarts ways."
Hermione laughed out loud. "Trust me, you'll always have that. You'll never grow up."
Draco chuckled. " Yeah, maybe. But that's where this all began. There was always something between us. "
Hermione watched as Draco gathered his thoughts, his brow furrowed. His shoulders sagged as he mumbled. "I had had this thing all planned out, but I guess I should have known it would never happen." Hermione looked at him curiously but Draco didn't explain. "Back at Hogwarts, all I could think of was you. I use to think it was because of Pothead and Weasel. And maybe all my plotting started that way, but it changed. Probably after you slapped me for being a prick." Draco gave her hand a kiss. " There was always something there. It was there the day you ignored me, on our first day at Hogwarts. And every damn day after when you refused to acknowledge me. The day you hit me across the face, or called me a twitchy ferret. The moment you saved my arse from the pack of werewolves during the war, or when you told my father I was worth ten of him at his own dinner party." They both grinned at the memory. It was right after the war when Lucius thought to test Hermione publicly and got a little more than he could handle.
"This, thing, between us was present the second you decided to spend the weekend with me after that gold digging tart left me...I could list them all and run out breath before I was through. From the moment I met you, it's been you. No other girl really had a chance. I can't explain it, really. It's you. It's always been you."
Hermione couldn't help the goofy smile spreading across her face. "I kind of like this view on the pedestal."
Draco made to stand. Turning a nasty shade of gray, he fell onto her mattress. They both gasped in pain.
"Merlin, woman, you'll be the death of me."
Hermione slowly managed to get her lips to his. "Considering that did almost happen, lets not allude to it."
Draco frowned. " You had to know I was coming for you."
Hermione leaned her forehead against his. "I knew you would, somehow. Although I am confused how you got there...?"
Draco managed to be evasive. "Let's talk about that another time. Anything else?"
Hermione smiled. "How about I love you, too?"
For once, they found themselves in perfect agreement.
