Chapter 44
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Looking across the table at his parents, Bill gave a sigh. His mother's eyes were red and his father looked disappointed, but that wasn't going to change his mind on this. Shaking his head, he said, keeping his voice soft, “This is too good of an opportunity to pass up. The goblins offered me not only a substantial raise, but I'll be taking on more of a supervisory position. It's a good opportunity for me.” And that was no lie. When he approached his boss about going back to Egypt, this had been offered to him. It seemed that several of the more senior workers in Egypt were getting ready to retire so that meant the goblins wanted bodies in place that had experience. He was perfect for it. Though he was going to go back one way or another, this just sweetened the pot.
Nodding slowly, Arthur looked at his son, “I agree. It's worth returning. You need to do what you think is best for your future. This is a good opportunity for you.”
“It is,” Bill told him firmly. “It'll give us a good nest egg to start out with. Fleur is going to try to get on at the branch down there, something I'm sure she'll manage.” Stopping, he looked at his mother and waited.
Having been looking forward to planning a big wedding for her first son getting married, Molly was disappointed. However, she understood the same thing her husband did; this was too good to pass up. With a sigh, she looked at Bill then smiled, “I understand. We can still do something, of course, even with a Ministry wedding. The ones in school—they won't be able to come but I'm sure we can get Charlie and Percy. It'll just be a small family thing for all of us. That's probably better anyway. Less stress on everyone. How long do we have?”
“Fleur and I are planning for next Friday. That way we can Portkey out on Saturday to get settled in one of the Gringotts housing units before I start the following Monday. It's short notice, I know, but they need some bodies, fast.”
Though not liking such a small timeframe for a big event like this, Molly's face took on a determined look. Nodding, she said, “Alright. Let me see what we can come up with. It won't be much in the way of a reception, just family and some friends, but I'll come up with something!” After all, though she wouldn't have the big wedding she wanted, she would manage to pull something together. Already, she was thinking over all those she needed to get in contact with to invite. It would be confined to just close family and friends, of course, but there were enough of those that she would have to do some arranging and get some help. Then there were things like getting the house cleaned top to bottom, the yard done, all of it. Oh, she had a lot of work to do!
“What does Fleur have to say about this,” Arthur asked. He assumed, from what he saw of the beautiful woman, that there would be no issue, but he was curious.
Giving a genuine smile, Bill said, “As long as we're together, she doesn't care where we are. She made that clear. Right now, she's in France filling her parents in on what's going on. She should be back tomorrow if nothing goes pear-shaped. From there, we'll work with it. We both have a lot to do to get ready to go.” Actually, he was relieved. This was a far better reaction than he expected. There were tears from his mum, of course, that came with the territory, but they understood. It was perfect. Now he could get out before the worst hit and wouldn't be drawn into what he was more and more convinced was the losing side of this war. No, he wasn't going to try to convince his mother or father that they were backing the wrong horse in the race, but at least he was out. He just hoped that the rest of his family realized what he did before the worst came to pass.
Looking determined, Molly put her hands on the table and looked around. “We have a lot to do and not much time! Alright, Bill, let's work this out,” she told them then looked at her oldest. Quickly, she began to organize the bare basics of what was needed for a ceremony and a small reception, getting what her son and future wife wanted then began to discuss what was going to be needed.
Sitting there, only half listening to his wife, Arthur was thinking over all that was just said. He was dead certain that Bill was telling the truth about the job. He, of course, wouldn't lie about that to anyone. And, indeed, it was a good opportunity for his son. However, he was also equally certain that there was more to this than what they were being told. Just what that related to he didn't know. Maybe, sometime in the next week, he could sit down with Bill and see what he could get out of him on what was going on. Bill—he was the level headed one of the bunch and didn't go off half cocked or do things on impulse. If there was something more to this decision, he wanted to hear it. It would also be something he was certain would give him food for thought. Though, honestly, he really didn't know what it could be.
Pulled out of his thoughts by his wife, he nodded to her, agreeing to whatever plan she had come up with. After all, this was something she was so looking forward to doing that he was going to let her have her way. However, it did mean he had to pay attention to what was said so he knew what he was being pulled into!
Perched on a corner of Voldemort's desk, Sirius was looking down at the black mask he was holding. It was what he was going to use at meetings and such. Already he had a glamour ring that would change his appearance, something like Harry had. Rather than having slots in it like his godson's, it only had the one glamour. To everyone that didn't know who he was he would look in his mid-twenties with longish straight black hair and blue eyes. He could deal with this.
Fingering the gold trim on the mask and looking at the standard black robes of a Death Eater, he looked over at Harry and Voldemort then nodded. “Alright, this'll work.”
Grinning, Harry nodded. “Great! We can start Thursday with the group. Barty is going to know who you are,” he said nodding to his friend who was standing there, “and Wormtail will. He's already been told that he if tries anything, the Dark Lord, himself, will deal with him.”
“I'll make sure he stays away,” Barty told Black. “If you do help, don't worry about him. I'll handle whatever he needs.”
Nodding to Crouch, Sirius said nothing. He was still not sure how to react to the man, after all. Harry made it clear that the two of them were friends and he really liked the man, but for him it would take time. There was so much here he had to get used to that he wasn't going to concern himself with making friends right away.
“You won't be bothered,” Voldemort told him, leaning back in his chair, looking at Sirius. “Just use the name you came up with, Titus Noir, and I'll announce your position, making it clear you're Evan's bodyguard. That will stop problems before they start.” Stopping, he then added, softly, “Once you get comfortable with this, you can go out once in a while. The glamour is good enough that no one will guess who you are. That's a perk I'm certain you'll like.”
“It is,” Sirius admitted with a nod. Sighing, though not liking the people he would have to be around, he thought this could work.
“For a week or so, other than private meetings Evan and I have, you might want to go with him to get a feel for who is around and what issues there are. It'll probably be fairly boring for you, but you'll get a sense for what Evan deals with and who he's in contact with. As I'm certain you know, you'll get the feeling of who is 'safe' and who to be wary of.”
Taking that as gospel on the topic, something he learned early on in Auror training, Sirius nodded. “That I'll do.”
“Very good,” Voldemort said with a nod.
“At least you'll get to wander around and get a feel for what's here,” Evan told him. “And won't have to sit by yourself all the time.”
“There is that,” Sirius grinned. Actually, though he wasn't certain he could deal with some of the people that he was going to have to be around, he liked this idea. Not only did he get to spend large amounts of time with his godson, he was going to be more active than he had for a long time. Plus, well, almost the whole time since escaping, he had been alone, either as a human or his animagus form. That was getting wearing for him. He wanted to be around people, even if he didn't talk to them much, and mingle a little. That would make him feel better, not like he was so alone in the world.
“As we have it worked out, why don't you and Evan go for a while. He will walk you through the Abbey and explain where everything is. Right now, we don't have anything to attend to. As we picked some books up for Narcissa yesterday while out, he can deliver those to her in the infirmary. That way you get a better feel for the layout of the place and who is around. I assure you that there won't be any problems.” Voldemort told him.
“Works for me,” Sirius said, standing. Slipping into his robes, he put the mask in his pocket then made sure the glamour ring was on. Waiting, he looked at his godson.
Grinning, Harry stood. Gathering the books they had picked up for research for Narcissa, he said, “Come on, Titus, I'll give you the full tour.”
Chuckling, Sirius told him, “You might have to nudge me for the first few days until I get used to that name.” Shaking his head, wondering, somewhere in him, what Lily and James would think of this, he followed his godson out.
Though, normally, he wasn't one that said much to the Dark Lord about any decisions he made, just following what was wanted, when Sirius and Harry left, Barty said, softly, hoping it wouldn't be taken badly, “I think that was a smart move. You are protective of Evan and he can more than hold his own. Titus, though, is rabid about him. No one, anywhere, would come out of a fight unscathed if they went after Evan with him around.”
Giving a snort and a small grin, Voldemort replied, “Indeed. Though there is history—yes, it's a good choice.” Not wanting to linger there, tone taking on something more business-like, he said, “Now, about the beginners group—are we seeing any improvement or are they still fairly stagnant? And we're going to start working with the ones released from Azkaban this week. It was my thought to combine the two groups. With the four of us, we should be able to handle them all.”
“I think we can,” Barty nodded, turning to face the Dark Lord. “The ones from Azkaban are just rusty. A little work and they'll be back to where they were. We'll have to compensate for some of them, depending on their condition, but I don't see a real problem with them. It's my thought that they can pretty much be left to their own devices once they realize what they need to do. All that’s going to be needed is just some practice.”
Liking what he was hearing, Voldemort nodded, then produced the list of those in the infirmary with the workup Evan did on them. Making a copy of some of it, he handed it over to Barty so they could go over what they thought was needed.
Starting on the bottom floor, Harry walked Sirius through where everything was and what was used for what. The layout, though slightly sprawling, was easy enough to navigate. Working his way up from there, they talked about all kinds of things. No, they didn't cover topics that might give away who they really were, but they did joke around, something that made Harry grin. Already he liked this. It felt good to have Sirius here so he could talk to him. Barty and Draco were friends, of course, but they weren’t like his godfather. With Sirius, he didn't have to worry too much about what was said and could talk to him about most anything. That he adored.
Though not saying his name aloud, Harry told him about the letter from Remus. No, he didn't tell him all that was in it, but the part about the werewolf being worried about him. Quietly, he told him, “I'll send a letter back and let him know you're fine and somewhere safe. I won't say where, obviously, but that I found you somewhere. Work for you?”
Not having thought of his old friend's reaction to that article in the paper, Sirius sighed then nodded, “It does. Just make sure to let him know I'm fine and not to worry. Tell him no one, nowhere, can find me where I am and the Ministry won't be able to track me. He knows enough to get that I’m somewhere protected if you say that.”
“Gotcha,” Harry said with a firm nod. Arriving at the door to the infirmary, he said, “This isn't a big deal. I just need to check on a few people then get with Narcissa. You'll have to deal with her and Bella, of course, but it won't be bad. Narcissa is actually quite nice.”
“She always was.” Sirius told him softly. “There were problems with the two of us, obviously, but she was always pleasant with me.” Stopping, he asked, lowering his voice further, “Bella still unhinged?”
“Yeah, she's bad.” Harry told him grimly. “Azkaban made what was already there worse. She's respectful, but wary. As long as Narcissa is around, there isn't a problem. I've not dealt with her alone yet. My role in all this has been made clear by the Dark Lord, so she should be fine.”
“Just keep on your toes around her,” Sirius warned. “I'll make sure to keep an eye out as well. She's unpredictable on a good day and you never know when she'll lose it.”
“Will do,” Harry told him with a nod. Pushing the door to the infirmary open, he walked in with Sirius close by his side. After checking with the medi-witch for any problems, being thankful there weren't any, he stopped by a couple beds to check on people before making his way over to where Narcissa was seated by her sister's bed.
Nodding to both ladies, he quickly introduced Titus, as they were giving him wary looks. When he finished, he said, “The Dark Lord assigned him to stay with me most times.” He figured that was all that was needed on the matter and they would get what Sirius' job was.
Understanding, Narcissa nodded and smiled at the man.
Conjuring chairs for both he and Sirius, Harry took a seat then looked at Bella. “Is everything going well? I heard you had a way to get a wand. Were you able to do that?”
“I have one,” Bella told him, looking at him warily then to Titus, not sure what to make of the newcomer.
“Good,” Evan smiled. “If you would like, and feel up to it, you can use the practice room to bone up a little. Most times, there isn't anyone in there during the day. The only time it's used is for meetings and practice sessions. It'll give you a chance to shake off some of the rust that might be there. The practice dummies are always in place, so you can use them.”
“I think that's a very good idea,” Narcissa nodded, looking from her sister, who was nodding as well, back to Evan. “If you don't mind, though, could I accompany her? Just to make sure there aren't problems of course.”
“That's fine,” Evan told her with a smile and wave of his hand. Making a note on the pad he always carried with him, he said, “You can use it all you like. The first time, though, grab Barty so he can walk you through how to use the dummies. I'll make sure he knows to expect you. And I'm sure, if you'd like, he'll be more than happy to help if there is a problem.”
“Thank you,” Narcissa said sincerely, smiling. “That might be for the best. The skills do languish if you haven't used them for a while.”
“Exactly,” Even replied, nodding. Moving on, he pulled the books out of his pocket and unshrunk them before handing them over. “We found quite a few for you yesterday while we were out. Of course, we haven't had a chance to look through them other than ensuring they were on the topic needed, but they should give you what you need to work with. If not, let me know and we'll see what else we can find.”
Nodding vigorously, Narcissa took them and sat them down before pulling the one they found with the prophecy out of her pocket. “We actually found several on the topic just where our Lord said they would be. This one even has a copy of the prophecy in it.” Opening it to the page, she handed it over to Evan.
Taking it, Harry read through it, brow furrowing. It was—odd, that's for sure, and he wasn't sure what to make of it.
Leaning over and looking at the book, Sirius frowned slightly then said, “That wording is slightly different than what I remember reading.”
“Really?” Evan asked, looking at him.
“Yeah, it is,” Sirius nodded. “It's—it seems to mean something different than the ones I read.”
Looking at Narcissa, who was glancing between the two, he asked, “Can you see if you can find the prophecy in one of those books so we can compare it?” Quickly, Harry explained, “Titus is the one that gave me the list I passed on to you. He's read some about them in the past.”
“Oh, alright,” Narcissa nodded, smiling at the man. Picking up a few of the books, she checked the table of contents to see if one had the prophecy in it.
While she did that, Harry flipped to the front of the book he was holding and looked at the copyright date on it. It was far older than anything he had passed to Narcissa. “Maybe this is more of an original version of it rather than something cleaned up for the newer books,” he commented.
“That could be,” Sirius told him. “They do try to make the wording better as time goes along, especially if one particular version seems to be more accepted. With as old as this prophecy is, I'm pretty sure that's the case.”
“I found it,” Narcissa said distractedly, reading through it quickly. Looking up, she said, “You're right, it's different. Slightly anyway. I think this one,” she said gesturing to the book, “was put in more modern language and seems to be trying to spell out what they think is the meaning.”
“May I?” Sirius asked, holding out his hand for the book.
Handing it over, Narcissa waited, looking between the two.
Looking at the prophecy in the book he was holding then to the one Harry had, Sirius nodded, “Yeah, it looks like they've tried to clean it up. See the line about salvation? They seem to have reworded it to read to where it's against the loathed whatever. Same with the line about once unequal. That's been reworded to mean something completely different, like a shift to another direction. Yeah, someone has played with this.”
Nodding, taking that in, he looked at Narcissa, “If it's alright, can I keep this book for tonight?”
“Of course,” she told him. “I have enough here to work with.”
“Good,” Harry told her, smiling. “I'll get it back to you tomorrow, both of them. If you would, can you look through those tonight to see if there are any more versions of the prophecy? If they've changed it once, they might have again. I'm curious as to how many versions there are of it.” Quickly, he copied both versions onto one of the papers of his tablet then handed it over to her.
“I'll see what I can find,” she told him firmly. “I'm still going through some of the books at the manor. There might be something in them as well.”
“Good! If you find anything interesting, let me know tomorrow.” Shrinking the books and putting them in his pocket, he then looked at the two ladies and smiled. “I'll get with Barty when I leave to let him know you're going to use the room. I believe he has the first full session with everyone Thursday. If I remember right, you'll be working at the same time as one of the other groups. It won't be a problem, I assure you. One will be on one side, and the other on another. I think, this time around, we're just going to see where everyone's skill level is and judge what needs some honing, nothing more.” Looking at Narcissa, he said, “If you'd like, you can come to observe. I'll make sure everyone knows.”
“I think—yes, I'd like that,” she smiled. Actually, with how Bella was, she thought that the first couple times her sister might react better if she was there. After all, she knew how to keep her calm.
“I'll make sure the Dark Lord and Barty know,” Evan told her. Standing, he said, “I'll leave you alone then. Good day, ladies.” Nodding to them, he and Sirius then left.
Watching the two go, Narcissa was still smiling. Reaching out, she patted her sister's arm. “See? I told you he's quite nice. There is nothing to worry about there, Bella. He's very loyal to our Lord and is nothing to worry about.”
“We'll see,” Bella said, watching the two go. She was protective of the Dark Lord and always wary about newcomers that rose quickly, worried about traitors. Though in the case of this one, she was less than she had been in the past. She would watch him, nevertheless, and see. Only time would tell on that end.
Walking by Harry's side as they went down the stairs towards the study, Sirius asked, “Why are both of you looking for that prophecy? Is there a reason or is it just one of those things.”
“No reason, really,” Harry said, shrugging. “Some things about it just keep being mentioned so we're seeing if we can't find out if there is anything to it or not. I mean, there are real prophecies, we all know that, it's just that some—well, they can be useful.”
Taking that in, Sirius nodded. Though he didn't understand why someone would put stock into something so old, he could understand if it was mentioned why they would want to know about it. “It's odd that it was changed, though. And I wonder which is the real one, if either of them are.”
“That is odd,” Harry conceded. “I'll let the Dark Lord look at them and see what he thinks about it. Though I would gravitate towards the one Narcissa came up with when it comes to that. After all, it's the older of the two.”
“Probably, yeah,” Sirius said. “If you don't mind, I'll read through that one she had and see how it differs from what I remember. If nothing else, I'll enjoy it.”
Grinning, Harry nodded, “I don't see a problem there. After all, if you can remember the difference or if it was, it might give us somewhere else to look. What we picked up were newer books on it. If the older one is different, we'll have to look somewhere else.”
“True!” Sirius said, reaching out to put his hand on his godson's shoulder, giving it a squeeze. Changing topics, he began to ask a little about the training sessions so he knew what to expect.
Foundation laid! All hell breaks loose next chapter.
