~~~ TESTING ~~~
The groups before and after Lunch were of the new first years. Harry made a shortened introduction and then challenged them to form study groups.
“The study groups that you will form in our classes will be the basis for your learning all through the year. They are not just for your friends; they have to represent the new mixed culture of Hogwarts so there are rules:
First: One person from each house.
Secondly: At least one person from each race, but no more than two.
And Third: An equal number of boys and girls.
Once you have formed a group, go to my assistant elf, Phealey, and register your names.”
General mayhem took place with all kinds of horse trading taking place. One enterprising group of friends had to be stopped from swapping gowns and identities in order to stay together.
Once the students were settled again; as this was the intake of twenty-eight, Blaise took three groups whilst Harry had four. They had the new students showing each other the uses they knew of their favourite magical instrument; also the teachers encouraged their pupils to try the different media available. It also gave Blaise a start for his Magical Theory course.
With the second group after lunch the same procedure held firm. They had also made inroads into the second-years’ tests by the end of the day.
~~~ DUELLING CLUB ~~~
Came the evening; the first night of the Duelling Club was to take place. Blaise had made timetables for the desirous participating fourth-years and upwards giving enough time for two bouts at each level plus one eighth-year and a staff demonstration. Other people were scheduled for later weeks until everyone had had a turn.
“From then on,” Blaise informed them: “There will be a ladder competition with close people challenging each other.”
Harry and Draco gave the staff demonstration, using some of the more flamboyant hexes and shields. What horrified and fascinated the audience was the total silence in which the pair duelled without the use of wands, although they did introduce some colours into the thaumic discharges. Before they started, Harry explained that he and Draco had rehearsed this in the privacy of their own rooms first, realising that a deadly fight would be totally undemonstrative.
“Two people standing scowling at each other, pointing a finger, saying nothing and occasionally dodging is definitely not good theatre, except for the various coloured spells produced.” he remarked to a puzzled audience.
He introduced Phealey as being an observer of the practice and said that he would be making a running commentary, describing the hexes and defences used. In the end both of the elves shared the commentary. Blaise kept the score announcing a dead heat as the two protagonists panted, perspiring heavily, at the end of their quarter hour.
“That was a fixed match!” someone yelled.
“Yes Mr Nott, it was; as Professor Potter said. Had we really been duelling silently you would most probably not have seen anything,” Draco replied, levitating Theo with no obvious spell. “Have I made my point?” Draco now had Theodore Nott revolving head over heels in the air.
“Okay …! You’ve … Convinced … Me … Please … Put … Me … Down …?” pleaded the ensorcelled student, each time he faced Draco during his revolutions.
The other students were unsure whether to giggle or be afraid, heaving a communal sigh of relief when Theodore landed safely.
“A bit melodramatic,” remarked Minerva, quietly to the pair, as they were leaving after the bouts; “but it certainly made the point. I doubt anyone will challenge your authority now, or try any funny-business with your friends, either. I see that Justin’s recovered from his attachment to the tiller. I have a feeling that it could be Theodore so I’m keeping a close watch on Mr Nott’s antics. I really did not want to let him back in, but the governors thought he should have a second chance. Interesting form of retribution, that! Very well thought out … Oh yes …! There have been some no-shows in the seventh year, so you need only to divide them into two groups. I suggest you abandon the Thursday evening classes; they would have been unpopular anyway.”
“Okay Minerva! It will give me space to bring some of the new seventh-year Slytherin students up to speed in very small groups,” Harry replied. “I’ll bill it as small group tutorials, students expect them to be held at odd hours. By the way, Draco and I think it was Cassius Warrington.”
“Warrington’s a no-show. I’ll keep my options open, but that young man is still trouble. Is there really any need for tutorial groups?”
“I think so. They’re very good at aggressive hexes, but poor on defensive charms and, as we agreed, defence will be the main thrust of the classes.”
“Very well! You are the Professor; I’ll back your judgement.”
~~~ HARCO APARTMENT ~~~
In their flat two exhausted Professors had a private snog in front of the blazing fire, sitting on the very comfortable sofa; only too soon to be interrupted by someone knocking on their private door. It was Dean and Seamus.
“We watched your bout, very spectacular, even the left-over nasty ones in Slytherin will have second thoughts about challenging you.”
Dean and Seamus hugged their two buddies.
“Oh yes! Greg has a message for you,” added Dean. “He says that he has been promised enough glass and framing to make the patio warm and watertight, and more coming in two weeks to cover the swimming pool. If you like we can put up that glass tomorrow and Friday as well. It will form a pleasant dining area, leaving the ‘L’ shaped room as a sitting room. Useful when our lot invade at the weekends.”
“Sounds good to me; what do you think, Draco.”
“It’s your house, Harry. But I rather like the idea of eating under glass, especially if we make it conservatory-like. Mother and I often ate in the Manor’s conservatory when Father was away. He always wanted to eat in a formal room.”
More hugs and two enthusiastic lovers cabinetted to Toppers Wallow where they were shown Dean's and Seamus's ideas. Then they cabinetted back to Hogwarts and their rooms.
~~~ PEACEFULNESS ~~~
Sitting on the sofa in front of the fire, Draco and Harry held hands. They fed off each other’s peaceful feelings, gazing into the flames and stroking each other’s hair. It took a great effort to rouse themselves and walk towards the bathroom, but it was worth it. The medium setting of Jacuzzi jets was very soothing and Harry had to rescue Draco when he started to nod off. Harry had to almost carry his dozing mate to bed, it squeaked once when they got in, but their lack of energy forestalled any more bed-music.
~~~ THURSDAY 3rd ~~~
Today the team worked through more classes, covering the second and third years, and making a start on the fifth-years too. Hermione went to help Draco in the afternoon. They tested the students to see what level they were at. Pullet’s reading and writing skills had improved enough for him to be able to mark down, on a chart, all the potions students were able to perform, which greatly speeded up the trials.
Phealey was with Harry most of the time. Their chart was differently organised but had the same effect of finding the level of student knowledge. Both Harry and Draco were of the opinion that little had been taken in during the last year. Something that the rest of the group agreed with.
Harry approached the three seventh year Slytherins just before lunch. “Mr Creswell would you and your two friends come to my rooms at five-fifteen this evening, please?”
“Yes Professor, of course. Err … Why?”
“You’ll find out when you get there, won’t you?”
“Err … Yes, Professor … we’ll be there.”
All three students gave Harry worried looks throughout the meal, but he pretended not to see. Devious Draco, who was to be there also, knowing why, worried them even further when he kept on giving the trio ‘you’re-in-for-it’ looks.
~~~ TUTORIALS ~~~
Classes over; Draco and Harry quickly ordered some tea and were seen to be sipping it unconcernedly when three worried Slytherins knocked and were bid to enter.
“Professors. We’re very sorry if we upset Professor Potter earlier in the week. It won’t happen again, we assure you.” Septimus said, almost grovelling.
“Please don’t dock us any house points.” Crassus Urquhart pleaded.
“Professor Malfoy, you’re our deputy housemaster. Plead our cause, please,” added Honorius Harper.
“I said we’d start again didn’t I, or have you committed some other misdemeanours in such a short time?” asked Harry, hoping he looked severe and peering Albus-like over his spectacle frames.
Draco smiled knowingly as he watched his three charges mentally wondering what they might have done. “Have you done enough soul-searching yet?”
That got him quizzical looks.
“Please sit down,” Harry continued, “you are not here for discipline but to learn. When we carried out the tests, in which you did quite well, certain defence charms were wanting. Students in the other three houses are well ahead of you in those, so I would like to coach you privately until you reach their standard.”
“Private tuition; that costs a lot doesn’t it?” Honorius asked.
“Not really! We’re more interested that you can defend yourselves properly than in extra cash,” Draco answered.
“That’s most un-Slytherin of you, isn’t it?” asked Crassus.
“Blame it on Gryffindor generosity, if you like. However, we do genuinely want to help,” said Draco. “Are there any more of your friends whom we haven’t yet tested, who might like to avail themselves of our offer?”
“There’s just one, I can think of, Mordant Bletchley.” Septimus looked at his mates, who nodded. “He’s the younger brother of Miles.”
“I remember his brother from playing Quidditch.”
“Yes that’s the one.”
“Would you like to go and fetch him, please?”
“Well … Actually … he’s just outside, waiting to see what punishment you were meting out to us.”
“Right! Bring him in.”
Mordant was all obsequious smiles when Septimus brought him in. Harry explained the position, and the smiles turned genuine. Next to arrive were Tracey and Wayne, slightly breathless and apologetic, so Harry explained again.
“Some of the defences I’m not sure about, boys,” Draco added. Professor Potter was going to bring me up to NEWT’s standard privately, so I’ll be learning alongside you.”
Pullet and Phealey were the next entrants popping into the practice room when the others arrived there. For the next hour or so in Harry’s practice area, the group trained hard and willingly, receiving praise and gentle correction as necessary.
“May we come again, please professors?” asked Septimus.
“This time next week? We’ll call it a group tutorial, shall we?” suggested Harry.
“Yes please, and thanks again. Didn’t think a Gryffindor could be so pleasant.”
“Didn’t think four Slytherins could be so co-operative,” was Harry’s smiling rejoinder.
~~~ EVENING ~~~
At Dinner Harry and Draco noticed smiles from the Slytherin table.
“I think you’ve scored a hit with those four,” Draco murmured.
“Mmm, yes! I like spreading happiness, don’t y’ know,” Harry replied jocularly: "Tracey and Wayne seem equally pleased."
“Don’t I know it? This ex-student thinks he’ll start a Harry Potter fan club for reformed Slytherins.” Draco put on his smarmiest smile, engendering in a light kick under the table from his lover.
After dinner the new professors hung-out in the Green Ladies Room. Draco had found some very acceptable port, so they sat sipping, recalling what had happened in the last two days. Filius came to see them, enquiring how they were getting on, and was treated to a repeat of the less scurrilous events.
“Sorry Filius, we have no cherry liqueur to offer at the moment, however we recommend some of Draco’s port,” suggested Harry
Filius accepted. “Here’s to our new professors,” he toasted.
“Here’s to our new deputy head,” they toasted back.
Filius looked slightly abashed, but still managed to smile proudly. General chit chat went on for another half hour; then the others wished our pair goodnight and strolled off to their respective rooms.
“Nice of Filius to come and see how we were, wasn’t it?” Draco remarked when they arrived back in their rooms.
“That’s the kind of gentleman he is, he shows he cares, sometimes almost too much,” rejoined Harry. “Then again, a certain Slytherin I know would have been scathing about the motives behind the visit just a few months ago.”
“Yes! I remember only too well, but you do still love me don’t you?”
Harry’s answer was to lift Draco off his feet and kiss him soundly. Whilst Harry’s hands were full of him, Draco used his to full advantage so that Harry’s bottom half was completely exposed. Very soon they were both déshabillé and in the shower enjoying the hot water and each other’s hot bodies. The bed played beautiful music that night as each lover worked out his lust on the other one.
They had to use a Tergeo to clean the bed.
~~~ FRIDAY 4th ~~~
It was Friday. It was pouring with rain. It was testing time for the remaining fourth-years and all the fifth-years. The tutors and their elfin assistants had now settled into a routine and so were more efficient. The fifth year groups were smaller because they were divided into three sections, thus enabling Blaise to go and help Draco again who had the large first year groups to cope with. The smaller group arrangement was deliberate because the more intricate defence spells required more time to teach, and most of the students were mature enough to be allowed to experiment. Thus they required closer supervision so as not to harm themselves or others. There was time enough at the end to have a chat with them concerning their OWL’s at the end of the year and the standards Harry would be expecting.
After checking with Minerva first, the pair cabinetted back to the cottage. Hamish came with them as well as Hermione and Blaise and the two elfin assistants: Justin and Neville were on weekend duty. Bobbie and Robby were classed as students and so stayed at Hogwarts. Hermione immediately used the next cabinet because she and Ronald would be staying at Number Twelve over the weekend.
Harry had been taken by Kreacher to see the new glasswork covering the patio. He said that Dean and Seamus had charmed it so that it reacted to light and that it was double glazed. What caught Harry’s eyes, however, was the screen that separated the pool from the patio. It had six Moorish arches supporting a triangular filler of tinted glass. Harry thought the inset decoration was of red rimmed suns two of which were either rising or setting. Below the triangle, the middle four arches were filled with the same light blue glass that made a background for the suns, the other two archways were open doorways. The interstices between the arches had emerald roundels backed by small triangles of ruby glass. Whilst he was staring in admiration at the delicate work, its two perpetrators appeared.
“I say, you two, this is stunning. I hadn’t imagined anything as beautiful as this. Thank you very much.”
“You can blame the design on Gregory; it was intricate work, we only just finished as you cabinetted in. Gregory thinks we could continue the Moorish-arch motif all around the pool should you want. We could disguise the outside into something plainer if you like. Come outside and see the new barn doors, then you’ll see what we mean.”
Seamus grabbed Harry and dragged him through the front door. - - - - - - The barn doors had been scraped and varnished until they gleamed. The dark shining wood had the ancient cast iron hinges and fittings picked out in a deep orange. At first Harry thought it was rust, and then admired the clever disguising of the scheme. The rustic nature of the doors was totally in keeping with the outer ambience of the building. The end pillars and the intervening ones had potted shrubs placed and the beds separating them were bright with flowers. Thus there was no evidence of the windows piercing the doors.
“You did all this by yourselves in two days?”
“Greg and the boys did the outside conventionally as well, and then the various elves finished off things inside. It was a team effort really. The shine on the doors hides the fact of disguised windows. We’re looking forward to building the pool covering.”
“You’ve done a fine job here. When do I get the bill?”
“Never! You helped us get together. Me mum kept on throwing fits when we went ter share a room, and Dean’s mum is almost as bad.” Seamus gave a grim smile. “Then again we have rooms in the barn. If you hadn’t offered us that temporary haven we’d be skulking in dark alleys, or some such.”
“Are you looking for somewhere permanent to live then?”
“We had our eye on the old cottage where Bathilda Bagshott lived, but the Weasleys are taking that over.” Dean continued, “Seems that the Weasley family was related to the old dear in some way. I hope you don’t mind but we’re using the double flat here; now that Greg and the muggle trio are at Woodyates”
“If Greg’s fine with that, so am I. I though you two had some NEWT’s in mind?” asked Harry.
“Well … Possibly … It’d only be DADA and Herbology for me,” replied Dean. “DADA and Magical Animals for my Irish mate here. Don’t forget that Filly has us helping out in certain crowded classes too.”
“We had a lot of fun doing up your cottage you know, even if we had ter alter things a couple of times afterwards. We’ve had ter invent new spells ter do things, especially the disguises; I reckon Hogwarts ought ter have a department of applied magic.” Seamus grinned awkwardly. “We were looking forward ter doing up the old dear’s cottage for ourselves too.”
“Why not suggest to the Weasleys that you could do the work for them.”
“Would you ask them for us?”
“If you like! So; what about Hogwarts?”
“We’ve got our schedules, Tuesdays with you, Wednesdays with Hagrid or in the glasshouses; then stay on for the duelling club. Two classes each to help Filly out. The rest of the time is ours, of course we’ll do the studying bit and there’s a paper to produce too. Though we’re not sure what subject to pick.”
“Why not go way out and follow your instincts about applied magic?”
“Never thought about that; Filly’s our tutor for the paper. Thanks Harry; we’ll put something together and ask him what he thinks.”
“You know you two are very welcome to stay here as long as you want,” Harry offered. “However I quite understand if you want your own place.”
“What we really want is a job offer, for, after we’ve finished the tutorship course; if we have to go cap in hand to our families, then they’ll try to split us up.” Dean looked sombre: "Although Filly's working on this idea for a practical course, nothing's come of it yet.”
~~~ SUGGESTIONS ~~~
Kreacher had set out the patio as a dining area. It was pleasant to eat out there with the views down the lawn. There was a large round table and the conversation was about things practical, fuelled by Harry’s suggestion to Dean and Seamus.
“I was chatting with the trio earlier,” Gregory said. “They were wondering if there was a way to plough using thaums, if you know what I mean. With just the one tractor it’s going to take the new owners years to get things going again.”
“Would the present team feel put out if magic were used?” asked Hamish.
“No! I don’t think so, they don’t object when I use it, unobtrusively, of course, in a muggle environment.”
"It's only semi-muggle," remarked Draco: "It is covered by a tholus, you know."
“There are a number of goblin charms for digging earth; maybe we could adapt some of them,” Hamish suggested: “I might have someone to help with those, but I’d have to ask him first.”
“There are elf charms also,” offered Pullet: “Elf gardeners use them all the time.”
Hyacinth, who was helping with the serving, overheard their conversation. “The previous masters, before the nasty ones, used digging spells in the garden, perhaps those would be useful.”
Draco smiled conspiratorially at Harry and murmured, “How are the fish biting today?”
Harry nudged his partner and smiled back. “How about a demonstration on Saturday; any new owners won’t object to the earth being prepared for them, would they?”
Dean understood. “Seamus and I are thinking of practical magic for our NEWT’s paper, would you mind if we join in too?”
Harry sat back and watched some new applied magic ideas take form, occasionally nudging the conversation, but quite happy to let Dean and Seamus ask the right questions.
After the meal; because there was a slight chill in the air the participants eschewed swimming, instead opting for indoor pursuits. It took little persuading for Hamish to start teaching them the basics of Goblin mah-jongg. It was a magical version and most of the depicted characters moved around, almost like magical portraits. One suit looked like samurai in bamboo armour; another suit was represented by groups of plates with different moving designs. The third suit was of Chinese fairies with designs on their fans which, Harry was told, represented the numbers up to nine – just to make it easy for non-mandarin readers; each lady had the correct number of fingers showing. Seasons, winds, flowers and dragons were relatively easy to spot.
The winds were the most difficult because you had to make sure the tile was the right way up; otherwise the cold north wind would blow from the warm south, or the wet west wind would bring in squalls from the dry east. When you played a piece you also had to make sure that it wasn’t a visitor standing in. Samurai would occasionally group together to have fights, the fairies a love feast, and the plates tended to roll out of the frame if you handled the tile roughly.
Draco knew the game slightly and Justin had played a muggle version. Kreacher was the surprise, he was expert. It seemed to be a collecting game and the others were encouraged to have a go – though it did help to have Hamish or Kreacher whispering instructions in the absolute beginner’s ears.
Later on Draco and Harry had a lascivious shower before snuggling to sleep in their own bed.
