Chapter 46 Severus’ bad hair day
“Where are we?”
“This is The Leaky Cauldron. It is where we shall be staying tonight as well as a gateway from the muggle world to ours.”
Nina looked around. “What’s that?” She whispered to Severus.
Looking over to where she indicated, he told her it was a hag, what Nina saw was someone hunched over a table dressed all in black. She looked to be eating…”Urgh. Is that raw liver?”
“Most likely. Hags thrive on it. Ah Tom. How are you?”
Severus now spoke to the bald, hunchbacked landlord as he approached.
“Professor. Rooms all ready. Shall I take your bags?”
“No. Just give me the key and room number. We shall find our own way there thank you.”
“Room twelve Sir.“ Tom told him with a bow as he fished a key from his trouser pocket while his eyes roved over Nina. “Will the young lady be wanting a room of her own?”
“No Tom. She is with me. Thank you.”
Nina didn’t notice. She was watching with grotesque fascination as the Hag sank long pointy teeth into her raw liver. Nina shuddered and Severus grabbed her by the arm to pull her toward the stairs.
“Did your mother not teach you that it is rude to stare?” The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
“Oh shit, I am sorry.” He told her.
“It’s okay. Anyway you’re right. I shouldn’t have stared.
“I should never have said that. It was insensitive of me.”
“Severus really, it’s alright. I…don’t remember much about my mum and dad anyway.”
“What do you remember of them?” He asked drawing her onto the bed beside him.
“Nothing nice, just that night when those men came. But I try not to think about it too much. Why?”
“Nina. Your vault, I have no idea what is in there. Obviously, there will be money but, there may be other items also. Personal items.”
“You mean pictures and things? Harry has pictures of his parents. Everyone I know has pictures of their parents. Like you have in your study. I’d like to know what they really looked like. Something other then what I remember.”
He searched her face and looked into her eyes. They had a sad, haunted look about them. “Show me.” He said softly as his fingers reached for her head.
When he saw the images she created of her father’s lifeless body, eyes gouged out and yet still being sodomized by a Death Eater as two others simultaneously fucked and buggered her mother’s dying body, he wanted to throw up.
“How long have you had this imagery in your head?”
“Since the night that Kali told me what I was. That’s when I remembered about that night.”
“And you said nothing? Why?”
“Well I talked to Argus about it. You weren’t in the best of moods at the time. But if there are pictures of them in that vault, I can make new memories can’t I? Pretend it was something different to what it was.” She told him sobbing.
Cradling her in his arms he let her cry as he shushed her and stroked her hair. She was right. But he had been too full of himself to take notice of the torment she must have been going through back then.
“Nina I am so, so sorry. I truly am.”
“It’s not your fault Severus. It happened and that’s all there is to it. There’s nothing either of us can do. Let me go wash my face and we’ll go to the bank.
He put away their overnight things as Nina cleaned herself up. “Ready when you are.“ She told him. Her voice still husky from crying.
“Very well. Come on.” Taking her hand he led her into the pubs small back yard. Taking out his wand, he tapped a series of stones on the back wall and Nina watched astonished as the stones moved and an archway appeared in the wall.
“Cool.”
“Welcome to Diagon Alley, Nina.” He told her as they stepped through the archway. “This is where you can buy anything and everything, be you witch or wizard.”
Nina turned, looking at the array of different shops and stalls that were in view. “It’s like another world.”
“It is another world. This is our world Nina. The wizarding world.”
He took her hand and led her towards Gringotts bank, walking slowly so she had the chance to stare at the wonderful sights to either side of her.
Her eyes were wide with wonder. “What’s that? What are those? What do these do? Look at this. What is it? Have you got one?” Her curiosity was endless.
It was with relief when they stood in front of the doorway to a large white imposing building. Big gold letters above the door read ‘GRINGOTT’S’. Nina’s looked up at the building and back down at the smartly dressed creature standing in front of her. Severus felt her nudge him with her elbow. ‘Severus. What’s that?’
‘That little bird is a Goblin.’
As soon as the goblin laid eyes on Nina it squealed in excitement, gave a deep bow and opened the large glass doors to allow them to enter.
Both of them jumped when it squealed. “What’s it go and do that for?“
“I have a feeling we are about to find out. Now stay close and do not wander off. Goblin’s are not the friendliest of creatures.” How wrong he was.
As soon as they walked through the doors, five goblins were down on the floor in front of Nina, bowing low and babbling about what an honour it was for them to have her grace them with her presence. Startled she turned round and attempted to run straight back out of the building only to find her way blocked by several more goblins.
“Severus. I don’t like it. What are they doing? They’re not gonna eat me are they?”
“No they are not. Did you not listen?”
“No I bloody didn’t.” She told him as she clung to his robes.
“They appear to be honoured by your presence. You should at least say hello. If you try and run, they will be insulted.
“Err. Hello.” ‘Will that do? Can we go now?’
The goblins on the floor stood, keeping their heads lowered as they parted and an official looking goblin approached.
“Good morning. I am Lani Tanaya, the Director.” He welcomed them, bowing low. “We have been looking forward to meeting you, Assimilator.” The goblin looked her directly in the eyes as he spoke, holding out a gnarled hand with long claw like nails.
Nina nudged Severus to shake it first but instead he discretely took hold of her elbow and thrust her hand into the proffered one. “It is a great honour that you are with us today. Please, come into my office and I shall deal with you personally.”
He led them to the rear of the building to another large imposing door, all the while more goblins were bowing low as they passed.
“Please, take a seat.” Lani told them as he moved to sit on the other side of an ornate white marble desk.
“I take it that you wish to see inside of your vault? I shall escort you personally of course.
“Yes please. But only if it‘s not too much trouble.” Nina answered in a very quiet voice.
“Nothing is too much trouble for the Assimilator. First I would ask that you grant some of my staff the honour of meeting with you. You will allow it I hope.”
“Err yeah. Severus? Can we?”
“Of course.” He answered for her. “Miss Manohel would be pleased to meet with your associates. But do please bear in mind that the young lady is shy and still quite unused to the ways and customs of our world.
“I understand perfectly Sir. Perhaps if the Assimilator were to meet with a small assemblage now, and another a little while later?”
“That would be acceptable yes.”
Lani Tanaya pressed a button on his desk and another goblin appeared.
Lani told him to escort the board members into the office and forget about the tellers. “Their presence will not be required.” He told the goblin.
“That’s not very nice.” Nina said glowering at Lani.
“What is not nice?” Severus asked her.
“I apologize Miss Manohel. I was not aware that you understood the language of my race.”
“You speak goblin?” Severus asked her surprised.
“No. But you heard what he said. It wasn’t nice.”
“I heard only goblin speak Nina. Clearly you heard more.”
“Mr Tanaya. If I’m gonna meet other…erm…goblins, then it’s not fair that I only meet the ones you think are important is it?”
“Once again, I apologise Miss Manohel. I meant no offence.”
“It’s okay. But why do they want to meet me anyway. I’m not important or anything.“
“But you are Nina.” Severus told her. “Apart from the fact that you are the Assimilator, you also hold four tenths of Gringotts wealth in your vault.”
“Oh bugger.”
A door to the left of the office opened, admitting around twenty or so goblins. All of them were dressed smartly, but Nina was relieved to notice that some were wearing the same uniforms as the goblins she had seen behind the high counters in the main part of the building.
After a persuasive push from Severus, Nina stood and walked towards the goblins who were now lined up against the wall and bowing low.
“Hi. I’m Nina. Please don’t bow.”
Severus had no knowledge of what she had said. Nina was speaking in the goblins’ natural tongue, though he had a feeling that she did not realise it.
One by one she shook hands with the goblins, smiling at and greeting them, asking if they liked working at the bank and what they did. By the last one she sounded like she was chatting twenty to the dozen.
‘Nina. Do not get carried away. We still have much to do.’
‘Oh yeah right. But they’re so interesting Severus. Patan has a hundred and nineteen children. Can you imagine that? And Sarn, he has forty two wives and over seven hundred grandchildren.’
“Would Madam like to see her vault now?” Lani asked her.
“Yeah. Err. Do we Severus?”
“Indeed she would.”
You have your key and pass book?”
Nina passed him the book and key.
Lani led them through yet another door and into a well lit corridor. Severus guessed that this must be Lani’s private entrance to the vaults because it was certainly different from the corridor all the other customers used, even the likes of Malfoy and Fudge.
He placed a clawed hand against a moulding on the wall and the floor carried them along the corridor to a waiting cart. It was much more ornate then the usual carts used to ferry everyone to their vaults. The seats and inside was upholstered in plush dark green velvet and the cart itself looked to be of a much sturdier construction then the norm. ‘Pity.’ Severus thought. His evil side had been looking forward to Nina’s reaction to the cart ride. He was not disappointed.
As soon as they were seated Lani shouted, “Vault number one please.“ and the cart rumbled and shot along the rails at high speed, zipping round forty five degree corners without slowing and travelling down almost vertically at least three times. It appeared to be going several times faster than the regular carts.
Severus would have loved the side if it were not for the fact that Nina, in absolute terror had grabbed him by the hair and was clinging on for dear life as she screamed into his ear non stop, her legs somehow found their way to wrap themselves around his torso. Her eyes were squeezed shut.
He struggled to prise her fingers from his hair before it came out by the roots, but to no avail. Then he tried to clamp a hand over her mouth to shut her up before he went deaf but her teeth bit down on one of his fingers. The pain from that was worse than the screaming. When the cart finally stopped, Nina was had two good trembling handfuls of his hair and was shaking so much that her teeth chatted together.
Severus on the other hand now had two bald patches on his head, his finger was pouring with blood and he felt like he had a couple of cracked ribs from the knee she had been pressing into his side, so much for his chance to gloat.
Nina scrambled out first and as Severus alighted, she was on her hands and knees throwing up. He let Lani attend to her as he withdrew his wand and healed his finger and ribs. His hair would have to wait until he had a mirror. Using goblin magic, Lani soon had Nina cleaned up and reasonably calm.
“I’m never going in one of them things again.” She cried.
“Again I must apologise. My transport is must faster than the regular carts. Since your vault is in the lowest regions of our premises I presumed you would prefer to get here quickly. Are you alright, Sir?” He asked Severus.
“I would be but for broken ribs, a severed digit and losing my hair.” He scowled as he continued to faff and fiddle with his hair, hoping that the bald patches were not noticeable.
“And I refuse to travel back in the same cart as you.” He told Nina. “You practically scalped me woman.”
“Well, if you’d let me hold onto you I wouldn’t have. Why didn’t you warn me about this? I know you knew.”
They glared at each other for a moment and Lani interrupted. “If Assimilator would please make the blood offering.” He held out a small silver knife to her.
“A what? Bugger off. Severus. Do something. He wants to stab me.”
“Never.” Said Lani. “But you must freely give a few drops of your blood so that the vault will recognise you.
Severus nodded at her and she took the knife from Lani. The blade was sharp enough to cut through the sheerest of silk without a single snag.
“How many drops?” She asked Lani with a pout.
“Only a few. You need only prick your finger.”
She held the knife over her fingertip and screwed up one eye, looking sideways at the blade. “Oh I can’t do it. You do it for me Severus.” She pleaded holding out the knife to him.
“No.” Lani told her. “You must make the incision. Or it is not given freely.”
“It’s not bloody given freely if your bloody well making me cut my own bloody finger is it?” She yelled back at him. “It’s not your bloody finger is it?”
“Oh just do it or we’ll be here all day. And stop swearing will you? You only need a little prick.” Severus shouted back at her.
For some reason, he could not fathom she started laughing at his last statement. She placed the point of the knife against her fingertip once more and fixed her eyes on Severus. ‘I hate you for this.’ She thought at him as she pricked herself. “OW. OW. OW. OW.”
“Oh for goodness sake. “There is barely a nick.” He told her as Lani held her finger to a small indentation in the centre of a very ornate golden door.
As the few small drops of her blood entered into the small curve under her finger, the door blazed with a brilliance that forced them to shield their eyes.
After a series of small clicks the brilliance faded and they were able to look again. Lani held the key out to her. “The vault should recognise you now. Please insert the key and turn it.”
Nina didn’t trust Lani anymore. “Should? What if it doesn’t?”
“Then you shall die in a most painful manner.”
“Severus you do it.” Severus’ eyebrows shot up and out if sight at her words. “I will not.”
“Only you may use the key.” Lani told her. “Only once you have entered and been accepted may you elect to allow another access.”
“Oh bloody hell.“ She muttered. Nina had never used the word bloody so much in her life. She barely held the key in the tips of her thumb and forefinger and put it to the keyhole, something she would never have found if Lani had not pointed it out to her. As soon as she thought it was far enough in she quickly let it go and poked it home with a jab of a finger, expecting to be blown up or have fire shot at her.
Nothing happened and she and Severus both let out breaths they had not realised they were holding. “So far so good.” She said and reached out, turned the key and jumped back in case she was pelted with flying swords or boiling oil dropped down on her head. “Oh my God am I still alive?”
“Indeed you are Miss Manohel. Welcome to vault number one. Please enter, state your full name, and what you are.”
“What I am. What am I?”
“You are the Assimilator, of course.”
“Oh yeah right. I forgot.”
She inched her way through the door, wary of anything that might be waiting to jump out at her. And as she disappeared from view, she screamed.
Severus flew to the door in a panic but Lani held up a hand to stop him. “You cannot enter until she has elected you.” The scream stopped and Severus once more held his breath as he waited to discover what ghastly abhorrence had been done to her.
“Severus. Severus. Come and look at this.”
“I cannot come in until you elect me.”
“Oh right. Severus Snape can come in this vault. There. Is that okay?”
“No.” Lani told her. “Mr. Snape. Is that your full given name?”
“No. But does it really matter?”
“It does if you wish to enter and live.”
The goblin turned to Nina. “Miss Manohel. Please read from this and use the full names of both yourself and Mr. Snape.”
He passed Nina a piece of parchment and looked at Severus. “Your full name?”
“Severus mumble Snape.”
“What?” Nina and Lani asked together.
Rolling his eyes he stated his name clearly this time. “Severus Ignatius Snape.”
“Ignatius?” Nina asked before bursting into a fit of giggles.
“It is a fine name. I do not see what you find so funny,”
“If it’s so fine why did you try not to let me hear it first time?”
“Shut up woman and get on with it.”
She took a few seconds to stop giggling and read from the parchment.
“I Nina Gweneth Manohel, The Assimilator, elect that Severus Ignatius (another giggle) Snape be allowed full and unrestricted access to the vault of Manohel. That he shall enter unharmed and shall leave unharmed, providing that he enters with good heart and free spirit and would willingly do no harm to any Manohel person or the property of therein.”
“There. Can he come in now?” She asked Lani.
“You may enter Mr Snape. When should I come back?”
“We shall not require a return journey thank you.”
“But there is no other way to leave these vaults Mr Snape.”
“In this instance there is. Trust me.”
“If you say so Mr Snape. Never the less. I shall have someone check on you at two hourly intervals. Just in case.”
Severus nodded and strode to the door. When he walked in the his legs nearly gave way. “Oh Merlin. I do not believe it.”
“I know. Have you ever seen anything like it?”
The vault was of cosmic proportion. It was so vast in fact that they could barely see the opposite wall. And stretching way into the distance were piles and piles of golden galleons, not the regular gold coloured ones that were in common use, but solid gold.
On the left was a long, long wall with doors set at intervals of about half a mile apiece. The one nearest to them had a sizeable plaque set high on it.
“What’s it say Severus? It’s too high up for me to read.”
He read the plaque and smiled. “See for yourself little bird.” He told her before picking her up and holding her at eye level to read it for herself.

“Severus. Pictures. There might be pictures of my mum and dad.”
Nina was almost whispering as she spoke.
“I think that there will be more then just photo’s in there Nina. Are you sure that you are ready for that?” He asked, placing her back on her feet.
“No. But I have to see. What would you do?”
“If I am honest, I too would want to look.”
“Will you look first. P…please?”
He nodded and placed a hand on the handle. ‘Gods.’ He thought. ‘please do not let me die a horrible death when I open this door.’
“You won’t.”
“I do hope you are right.” He turned the handle and opened the door.
