Chapter 46
Lucy felt as if everyone at her table was staring at her during supper and avoided meeting their gazes as she ate.
Severus noticed her discomfort, and the way his Slytherins seemed to be constantly sending looks her way and whispering amongst themselves. He also noticed she was sitting between Blaize and Draco, the two boys seemingly acting as her bodyguards. Something was amiss and he intended to find out what. Then he noticed Pansy Parkinson’s eyes were red and puffy, obviously from crying. Severus deduced that Lucy and Pansy had possibly had a spat in the common room and that was the reason for the covert looks and whispers, so put it to the back of his mind. For now.
Lucy really didn’t want to go back to the common room after supper, and when she saw Hermione and her other Gryffindor friends stand to leave the hall, she said a hasty goodbye to Blaize and Draco and rushed to the doors to catch up with them.
“Hey you three, wait up.” She called, hurrying through the doors. “I haven’t seen you all week.”
“Lucy.” They all said at the same time. “How’s Slytherin?”
“So so. What are you up to?”
“Hermione’s making us go to the library to study, you want to come along?” Ron asked, hoping she would be a diversion from the constant work Hermione made then do.
“Yeah, I mean if that’s okay with the rest of you.”
“Of course it is.” Hermione agreed.
Lucy was glad to make her way to the library, she missed her friends and still hadn’t had the chance to check for hidden niches where she could smuggle her computer in and upload more textbooks.
“Heck, your computer would come in really handy right now.” Harry grumbled to Lucy two hours later when the words merged on the page of his text book. I really hate revising.”
Lucy had done a thorough search of the library when they first arrived, and found several niches, all of which were in full view of the desk where Madam Pince sat. She also found a broom cupboard behind the restricted section, well out of range of the librarian, and large enough for her to settle in and work on uploading as many books as she wanted. The trouble was she would have to sneak in without the librarian seeing her, otherwise the witch would be searching high and low for her.
“Harry even if you had a computer that would work, it would be cheating.” Hermione told him.
“Why would it? He asked.
“Well… I don’t know, it just would.”
“I don’t see how, it would just mean we don’t have to go searching for books all the time, we could just bring it up on screen and study that way.” Lucy put in, a bit put out at the thought of cheating.
“Yes but the books in here wont be on any computer will they.” Hermione argued. “Computers are muggle inventions, these books are magical. You can’t find anything about real magic on a muggle computer, I know, I tried on my dad’s once after my first year.”
“Aha! So you would have used it if it had. That would have been cheating Hermione.” Ron accused, on point for once. “You said so yourself.”
Hermione blushed. “I only looked, that doesn’t mean I would have used it to my advantage.”
“Bet you would have.” Lucy quipped with a grin.
“Thanks for the support, I thought we were friends.”
“We are, but I still bet you would have used it.”
“Well it doesn’t matter does it, because it’s irrelevant.”
“It might not be.” Lucy said seriously.
“What do you mean?” Hermione and Harry asked at the same time, Ron giving them all a puzzled frown.
“Nothing, I was just saying that’s all.”
“Don’t give us that Lucy, we know remember, what you can do with… stuff. Come on, spill.”
Lucy narrowed her eyes at Harry, then sighed. “Fine, but not in here with Pince looking over our shoulders every five minutes.”
The group quickly placed books back on the shelves and packed their belongings, then herded Lucy from the library and up to the seventh floor.
“In here.” Harry said as a door appeared out of nowhere.
“This place is so weird.” Lucy exclaimed as they entered a small room with a fireplace and four comfy chairs.
Hermione rapidly explained the Room of Requirement, then insisted Lucy tell them what she had so far kept secret.
After telling them about accidentally uploading one of her textbooks, she continued to relate how she planned to sneak into the library and upload more, keeping the information on flash drives and cd-roms so she could access information whenever she wanted it.
“Well I don’t understand it, but it sounds cool.” Ron said eagerly.
“Lucy, have you tried doing it without actually being near the books?” Hermione asked, a contemplative expression on her face.
“Well no, I only had my own textbooks to practice on. Why?”
“Because if you can do it from say… this room, it might be possible to get books from the restricted section. Though I’m not sure whether or not it would be safe.”
“Why, what’s in the restricted section?”
“Dark magic books, and most have special charms on them to stop anyone from simply taking them. And some of them are very dangerous if you so much as touch them.”
“Yeah but she wouldn’t be touching them would she.” Harry stated, becoming excited at the prospect of being able to learn some stronger spells that might help him when it was time for him and Voldemort to meet again.
“Yeah, we could find out all kinds of things if we had access to those books.” Ron said.
“I’m not sure it’s a good idea.”
“But you suggested it Hermione.” Harry said, a peeved expression on his face.
The four of them argued and discussed the pro’s and con’s of uploading books onto Lucy’s laptop until the bell for curfew went.
“Bugger, we’re going to be late. “Harry complained as they all dashed to the door and peered out, making sure the coast was clear.
Hermione halted them as they stepped from the room. “Ron, we’re prefects remember, we’re allowed to be out after curfew. Now you go with Harry back to Gryffindor tower, and I’ll escort Lucy back to the dungeons. That way we can say they were with us when the bell went and they wont get into trouble.”
When the two boys headed off in another direction, Lucy told Hermione what happened in the Slytherin common room before supper. “What if Professor Snape finds out, he’ll go mental?” Lucy asked her, hoping she would help come up with a solution.
“Stick to your story, it’s all you can do. And for heavens sake try and hold your temper.”
“That’s easier said than done, Pansy’s a real bitch.”
“I know, and her friend Millicent is a bully.”
“Yeah, I gathered that about her, though she hasn’t said more than a dozen words to me yet. I hate sharing a room with those two. Tracy and Daphne aren’t so bad when you talk to them though., just a bit, I dunno, immature I suppose. I think it has something to do with their ‘pureblood upbringing’.” Lucy said with a chortle. “But at least they do talk to me.”
“Well that’s a good thing isn’t it?”
“Yeah, and Blaize is okay too. Hey, Malfoy apologised to me. He’s actually quite funny when you talk to him. I still don’t trust him though.”
“Lucy who you talk to and make friends with is up to you. All I’ll say is be careful, watch your back and remember I’m always here for you if you need me. You have to live with them, I don’t.”
“Thanks Hermione, I mean it. It’s good to know I have someone I can trust. I’ll be glad when Friday comes and I can go home for the weekend. I don’t think I could stand to spend two whole days in the company of prissy Pansy and Millie the mug.”
“At least try and get on their good sides, if they have them.” Hermione suggested. “It might make life a bit easier for you.”
Both girls laughed and headed down the dungeon steps.
“I can’t come in with you, but I’ll see you tomorrow, goodnight Lucy.”
The two friends hugged before Hermione made her way back to Gryffindor tower, and Lucy took a deep breath before giving the password and stepping into the portal that led to the common room.
As soon as she entered Blaize was at her side, soon to be joined by Draco and his two cronies, Crabbe and Goyle.
Lucy was introduced to them, and she gave them both curt nods, not really keen on either of them. She also noticed Pansy watching her from one of the sofas near the fire.
“Excuse me boys, I have something to do.” She said, making a bee line for Pansy.
As soon as they noticed, Pansy and Millicent stood, tensed and ready to fight if needs be.
They were both surprised when Lucy held out a hand.
Look, I’m sorry we got off on the wrong foot, I’m willing to let it go if you are.” Lucy offered, waiting to see how they would respond. She had decided Hermione was right, and was willing to at least try and get along with her housemates, her time here would be a living hell if she didn’t.
Pansy was about to make some scathing remark, but Millie nudged her and flicked her eyes in Draco’s direction. He, along with Blaize and the rest of the Slytherins were waiting to see the outcome of this confrontation.
Begrudgingly, Pansy briefly took the proffered hand, then discretely wiped it on the back of her robes when she thought Lucy was not looking.
Lucy did notice but said nothing. At least it was a start.
Most of the students either sat down, or went to their respective dorms, disappointed there was not going to be any action between the two witches.
“Well done, I’m proud of you.” Blaize said softly when she edged away from Pansy and stood on her own. He and Draco quickly made their way over to her.
“That took a lot of nerve.” Draco added, frowning inwardly as Blaize stood behind Lucy and casually wrapped his arms round her waist.
Lucy liked the feel of Blaize’s hard, lean body against her back and leaned into him, placing her own hands on his as she did. She pressed her bottom against him slightly, smirking a little when he returned the pressure.
Draco knew when three was a crowd and went to sit with Pansy. He decided to cajole her into coming to his bed tonight. It was too soon to make moves on Lucy yet, and Blaize seemed to have the monopoly on her at the moment.
