James and Lucius were having a quiet breakfast one morning
about a week before school started. The
boys wanted to stay with the Weasley’s until school started, and Molly was
happy to have them. She assured James
and Lucius their sons weren’t causing any trouble or in the way.
They were nearly finished when there was a knock at the
door. James got up to answer, wondering
who could be calling on them so early.
He opened the door to find Severus.
“Morning,” James mumbled, ushering the other man
inside. “Sirius is upstairs spending
time with Buckbeak.”
“I came to see you,” Severus said as he closed the door
behind him. “I need your blood.”
James whirled around and raised an eyebrow. “Come again?”
Severus sighed and started over. “Long story short, I did end up testing my
male fertility potion on myself. It
worked, and I’m pregnant. But there’s a
small problem. You conceived naturally,
and therefore your body is producing the needed hormones. Mine can’t.
Lyssandra told me that if I wish to keep the child, which I’ve decided I
do, I need the blood of a naturally pregnant male so she can make me synthetic
hormones.”
Lucius had joined them in the hall and heard most of the
conversation. He wrapped his arm
protectively around James. “Just how
much blood are we talking?” he asked.
“Only a few drops per batch,” Severus answered. She assured me neither James nor the baby
would be harmed.”
James bit his lip and rubbed the ever growing lump in his
belly. “Who’s the father?” he asked
curiously.
“I’d rather not say just yet,” Severus said quietly,
avoiding meeting James’ gaze. Then he
looked up, his dark eyes pleading.
“James, please… I don’t want to
announce it and have the father know, only to later have to tell him I
miscarried.”
James let out a deep sigh.
“All right then, you can come with me to my appointment this afternoon.”
A genuine smile appeared on Severus’ face. “Thank you, James. I suppose I’ll go say good morning to
Sirius,” he said as he climbed the stairs.
The four of them had lunch together then they got ready to
leave. “Why is Severus going to your
appointment again?” Sirius asked. He’d
been hoping to spend some alone time with his new friend. For some reason Severus had been avoiding
him.
James glanced over at Severus. “You know Sevvy. He finds the whole thing fascinating. He wanted to ask some more questions.”
“Oh,” Sirius frowned and headed off to find something to
keep him occupied.
Lyssandra greeted the three men with a soft smile. “I guess this means you’re going to put me to
work,” she said to Severus as she closed the door behind her.
Severus nodded. “Yes,
I’ve decided I want to do this.”
“I always knew you were a vampire,” James joked as he headed
into the examination room.
Severus frowned at the joke and took a seat in the waiting
room. He didn’t want to intrude on a
private moment. Today was the day they
were going to find out the sex of the baby.
James crawled onto the exam table and lay back. At about nineteen weeks he was definitely
starting to show. Lucius sat in the
corner while Lyssandra asked James a series of questions.
“Did you two want to know the sex?” she asked and pulled out
an instrument that looked a lot like a wand.
Both men nodded. They
were rather anxious about it. The midwife
took the wand and placed the tip on James’ belly. After a few moments an image began to appear
on a crystal screen beside them.
Lucius, who had never been to one of these appointments
before, stared in awe. “That’s our
baby?” he asked, his voice cracking a little with emotion.
“Yes, that’s your little one,” Lyssandra smiled. She loved watching the reactions every parent
had when seeing their unborn baby for the first time.
James had seen it before, but he couldn’t get over how much
the baby had grown in just five weeks.
“Oh, wow….” was all he could say.
Lyssandra looked closely at the image, looking for what should
be there, and for signs of trouble.
Everything seemed to be normal though.
“The good news is you have a very healthy little boy,” she announced.
“A boy?” Lucius repeated with a silly grin.
Lyssandra nodded.
“Yes, it looks that way.
Everything seems to be right on schedule.” She put the wand away and the image
faded. Lucius frowned, but didn’t
protest.
“Now, since Severus is here with you, I assume I have your
permission to draw a little blood?” she said to James.
James nodded. “A
little won’t hurt right?”
“No,” Lyssandra assured him.
“I wouldn’t do it if it would hurt you or the baby.”
James whimpered when she picked up the needle and he reached
out for Lucius’ hand. He could stand
pain, but he still hated needles.
Lucius took his hand and squeezed it lightly. James looked away for a moment, but then he
watched as Lyssandra found a vein and stuck the needle in. She took three vials of blood and pulled the
needle out, putting a bandage on the wound.
“There, now that wasn’t so bad was it?”
“Speak for yourself,” James grumbled.
“Well, I won’t need more for a while, so you’re safe,” she
mused.
They headed out to the waiting room where Severus sat
waiting. He stood when they came
out. “Well?” he asked nervously.
“I’ll have it for you as soon as possible,” Lyssandra
answered. She’d never done this
before. She had a good idea of how she
was going to do it, but it would still take a few days.
“Thank you again,” Severus mumbled.
“Are you coming back with us?” Lucius asked.
Severus shook his head.
“No, I need to go have a chat with Dumbledore.”
“He’s not the father is he?” James asked, a shiver running
down his spine at the thought.
“No, of course not,” Severus frowned. “But this will affect my job.”
“Oh yeah…” James laughed.
“Where’s my head at?”
“No comment,” Severus mumbled under his breath and turned to
leave. James heard him and stuck his
tongue out at the Potions Master’s back.
Severus knocked softly on the Headmaster’s door. “Come in Severus,” came the reply.
Severus entered and shut the door behind him. “You wished to see me?” he asked as he took a
seat in the chair in front of the desk.
Dumbledore nodded.
“Yes, I hear you decided to continue with the pregnancy.”
“Yes, I’ve decided to try,” Severus confirmed. “I may not be able to carry to term, but as I
see it, this is my only chance to have a child.”
Dumbledore frowned, but didn’t comment. “Of course you know this leaves me in a tight
spot. I was going to give you the
Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position this year, but of course the
pregnancy complicates things.”
“I understand,” Severus sighed. “Does this mean I won’t be teaching this
year?” While he’d never admit it, he
sort of liked teaching, but after much thought he decided this baby was his top
priority. He’d probably end up giving it
to Sirius in the end, but at least he’d get to experience being a parent for a little
while.
Dumbledore leaned back in his chair and stared at Severus
over the top of his spectacles as he had an annoying habit of doing. “It’s too late in the year for me to find a
replacement. I’ve spoken to James, and
he can take the job back six weeks after he delivers, but no sooner.”
Severus nodded. “So
I’ll need to teach until late February?”
“If you think you’re up to it.”
“I think I can manage.”
Dumbledore leaned forward again. “I also hear you haven’t said anything to
Sirius.”
Severus sighed. “No,
I haven’t. Since this is such a high
risk pregnancy I don’t feel like I should just yet.”
Dumbledore frowned.
“Now, Severus, that’s not something you can keep from another person.”
“It’s my business, so let me handle this,” Severus snapped
and stormed out of the office. He really
was tired of the old coot sticking his nose in where it didn’t belong.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were excited to be going back to
school. Draco was dreading it. While Dumbledore assured him he would be
taken out of Slytherin, he was still afraid.
He knew better than anyone that Slytherins had their ways of getting
around the watchful eyes of the teachers.
His new friends also promised to watch out for him, which
was a small comfort. But he had to
wonder if they could protect him from the other Gryffindors, since that was the
House he was being moved to.
Molly made the kids pack their things the night before they
left. She knew they’d neglect to do
something which would cause a rush in the morning, but that didn’t stop her
from trying. Draco had everything packed
a few days before hand out of habit. His
father had always taught him to plan ahead and never procrastinate.
Draco stayed in the twins’ old room with Harry. They were all sent to bed early, but Draco
lay awake staring at the ceiling. He
couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard he tried.
This was one of the times he really resented his father. While deep down he knew his father deserved
to be happy, the elder Malfoy’s actions had ruined everything. Draco hadn’t been happy with the way things
were before, but at least he hadn’t had to fear for his life.
He glanced over at Harry’s sleeping form. He envied his new best friend’s ability to
forget about everything and enjoy life.
Harry had seemed happy during their time at the Burrow, even with
everything going on in the outside world.
Draco sat up and watched Harry sleep for a while. He knew without a doubt that he loved Harry,
but Harry wasn’t ready to love him back, at least not in the way Draco wanted. But Draco also knew he could wait until Harry
was ready.
The next morning actually went fairly smoothly for
once. Harry and Ron had to do some last
minute packing as usual, but for the first time in five years they weren’t late. Ministry cars picked them up again and took
them to the station.
Ron and Hermione had to go to the Prefects’ car again, but
since Draco was no longer a Slytherin he went with Harry. The blonde stayed very close to Harry as they
searched for an empty compartment. All
the stares really unnerved him.
They ended up sharing a compartment with Luna Lovegood and
Neville Longbottom. After a quick
explanation of why Draco was with Harry and an apology from Draco to Neville,
both of them seemed to accept Draco’s presence. Neville still glanced at him nervously from
time to time, but Draco figured it was to be expected after everything he’d
done to Neville over the years.
About halfway through the trip a boy they didn’t recognize
came back with a message for Harry. Harry
was invited to meet with Professor Slughorn, the new teacher. Harry and Draco had gone with Dumbledore to
see him over the summer, and Draco could honestly say he didn’t like the
man.
Harry decided to go out of curiosity however, leaving Draco
with Luna and Neville. Since they really
didn’t know what to say to each other, the three students sat in uncomfortable
silence until Harry returned. Harry told
them about the ‘Slughorn Club’ and talked about who else was there. Dumbledore had warned Harry Slughorn might
try to ‘collect’ him, but Harry hadn’t understood what he was talking about
until then. The Slughorn Club was made
up of students who had well known relatives.
The stares Draco received on the train were nothing compared
to the cold welcome he got when they reached the school and he sat down beside
Harry at the Gryffindor table. Right
then he wished he had the power to turn invisible. Harry explained everything to his housemates
again, but Draco could tell it was going to be a long year. The others didn’t seem to be nearly as
accepting of the situation as Neville and Luna had been.
