Falling into Destiny
Chapter Forty-six
You stared at the area around the larger beach in disbelief. While you knew that the wedding had ended already, you would have thought that there’d be some trace left. Yet everything seemed to have been perfectly cleaned up. Well all the wedding stuff at least. Instead of celebrating witches and wizards, there were people in swimsuits.
“What are all of these people doing here?” Draco asked beside you with a modicum of disgust in his voice.
It was plain to see that the beach had been overrun with muggles. The style of clothing for a start was a dead give away - not a summer cloak or wand in sight. The lack of anything moving through the air or changing for no apparent reason were two other clues. You were actually glad that you'd changed back into the dress you'd worn to the wedding before leaving; it looked less out of place than the millenia old dress would have.
“The protection and anti-muggle shields must have worn off quickly after the wedding,” you replied to Draco quietly.
He didn't seem very pleased with that idea. You could think of a couple of reasons as to why he'd be displeased by the ideas of all the muggles reclaiming the beach. For a starter it was well known that Draco, Lucius, and your aunt (the Malfoys basically) disliked muggles. They saw them as inept in every way; unclean. To a degree sometimes you could agree with them but you'd seen more of the beauty of their world than the Malfoys had in your time away from them. Regardless, their presence and subsequent lack of wizarding society was no doubt another reason for Draco's disdain. If his parents and all of the other wizards and witches of the wedding party had been there, the ministry wouldn't have been able to differentiate who was using the magic that activated his (and the other underage kids') trace.
Now that you were away from your father's ancestral home and back in the presence of muggles once more, use of magic to activate the trace could have actually been a serious offense. Any magic he performed would activate the trace without the area being marked off for witches and wizards. Which meant the ministry would look into such an offense now that the area was full of muggles. And with no clear and present danger present he would have no argument for the use of any spells even if he could think of a useful one to use.
"Now what?" Draco asked in a tone that almost made you feel it was rhetorical. "Are we expected to take the Knight bus back home?"
You laughed more towards yourself than anything. "I don't have even a sickle on me. You?"
The look on his face was almost like you'd punched him. Draco wasn't poor by any definition of the word; nor were you. You just knew that he had never really carried around money when near his parents; there was no need. As for you...you'd left your personal bag in the Wedding tent when you'd gone out to escape all the half-whispered thoughts around you.
"We have to walk?" He was so taken back.
You looked down at your bandaged leg even as you nodded. The wounds from the sirens yesterday weren't bleeding anymore, which was good, but they throbbed anytime the muscle moved. Which was with every step. To even get away from the island you'd had to take a lot of steps. Quite frankly you were just tired - for once it was a physical exhaustion not brought about by a lack of vitality.
"Looks like it," you agreed as you slipped out of the delicate formal robe you had on. “But first I need to rest my leg.”
You laid your formal outer robe on the ground before sitting down on it. Though it wasn't the thickest thing, it would at least help to keep sand out of uncomfortable areas. You were just thankful that Draco didn't say anything about the fact that you'd decided to take a break during such a precarious moment. As you stretched back on your arms, laying out your bandage leg, he actually mimicked you and sat down himself. Though in a less comfortable manner judging from the way he was practically all balled up.
"You're way too comfortable out here with all of these muggles around."
You shrugged. “Unlike you, I've spent time near them over the summers. Plus there are a lot of muggleborns in Hogwarts that I’ve...interacted with.”
Interacting was a nice way to put it. You left out the fact that your interactions were predominately with the teenage boys. The truth was that you’d worked your way into their dreams as they slept and integrated yourself into it until you had a moment to induce intimacy. Usually it wasn’t very hard but to avoid sticking out in their minds like a sore thumb you’d had to learn to blend in and adapt. Something that Draco had never really needed to practice. His world was smaller than yours and inside of his, he had little need to conform to suit others.
You looked over towards the younger Wizard. He still seemed in a mood. Not that it was likely to change anytime soon. You looked away and rubbed near the bandages on your leg as you thought about the last twenty-four hours. Everytime you got to the fact that you’d been in Avalon, your mind started to reel over what that meant. And the time paradox around your father was another bunch of information that didn’t make sense. Had he lied to you about something? How? Why? If he hadn’t lied...how was that all the truth?!
“You could always use magic now if you want to go home so badly,” you brought up.
“And stand trial at the ministry? No.”
You let out a deep breath and rolled your eyes from underneath closed lids. It was partly your fault he was in such a bad mood. At the same time you couldn’t help but think he was being unreasonable. First he wanted to use magic without thinking about the repercussions and less than twenty-four hours later he’d changed his mind. Not that you could blame him for not wanting to get in trouble.
“With all the muggles around, I can’t either. At least…”
You trailed the thought off. Regardless Draco understood what you meant. You couldn’t use magic in a muggle zone so close to him. It would set his trace off. If you’d been seventeen it might have been permissible. As you had yet to turn fifteen though, setting his trace off would only bring negative attention and repercussions to both you and Draco. The ministry might even realize that you didn’t have the trace if they were smart and paid attention. The only reason you’d felt comfortable doing magic around him yesterday and this morning was because you’d been in areas with other magic users. The wedding party had been full of adults; any trace activation would have been overlooked or ignored because of that. Likewise you had assumed that the houself on Avalon signified a magical household - again something that the ministry would have marked and overlooked. The exception being when you’d been on the beach upon first arriving after being attacked by Sirens. You hadn’t been thinking as clearly then as you were now though.
“I’ll try to think of a way out of this mess soon,” you told Draco.
You relaxed back into the warm sand. It was definitely a lot warmer than you remember that was for sure.

“Why?” Draco asked as he stood firm in front of you. “Looking for an inn is a servant's job.”
“Something neither of us currently have. And as we’ve established I can’t very well transfigure this old newspaper into muggle currency with you around,” you said in an exasperated tone as you shook the newspaper in your hand for emphasis.
“What if you get caught?”
He didn’t actually care about the moral ramifications of counterfeiting muggle money. You could tell that much. He was, however, concerned about getting caught by the ministry and what that could mean.
“All the more reason for you to not be near. Besides, do you have a better idea?”
Apparently he didn’t. While he walked away in search of lodgings, you stayed at the park. You weren’t sure how far he needed to be so that you didn’t activate his trace but you were confident that he needed to be outside of the range of your hearing and sight. You read bits and pieces of the Newspaper while you waited to ensure that he was a comfortable distance away. Only then did get to work.
The park was relatively empty. It was a smaller seaside town where most of the natural settings had been left unmolested. That was why it had been chosen as a venue for the wizarding wedding. One of the families lived nearby. Theoretically you and Draco could have availed on their help. The trouble was that you didn’t know where or what house - neither you nor he had been part of the bride’s or groom’s personal party. Without knowing what house or a way to signal or contact them, trying to get help from them would have been pointless.
Besides you were actually quite proud of how the transfiguration had come out. You’d been able to force a memory from one of the dreams you’d been in with a muggleborn to the surface. And you’d kept the images you had of the country’s currency in you mind while forcing the paper into splitting itself to the right shape and size. Then you’d transfigured it to duplicate the bills. As you hadn’t used a spell you’d been taught or learned, getting the effect you wanted had been draining. You just hoped it was worth it.
You gathered the couple stacks that you’d been able to produce and put them into your outer robe’s pockets. They created a bulge on either side but without a bag there wasn’t much else you could do. Afterwards you waited for the younger teenager to return. Instead of trying to navigate the town and potentially missing each other over and over again in this strange place, you had told Draco to just come find you after he’d found an inn.
He didn’t come back for at least an hour. Though with nothing to occupy your mind it had felt a lot longer than that. You stood up and slowly followed him back to the place he had found. Though you had told Draco earlier that you had spent more time around muggles and muggleborns, there were still so many foreign things around you. You tried not to let your confusion or discomfort show as you and Draco stood in the main area of the inn.
After a bit of blunder and bribery, a room had been secured. You hung your outer robe on the door hook.
“How do you know what muggle money looks like?” Draco asked as he claimed the singular chair in the room.
“Like I said, I’ve interacted with a lot more muggles and muggleborns compared to you.”
As you spoke you went to sit down on one of the single beds in the room. The bed was firmer than you would have liked but there wasn’t much you could do about that. You stretched your leg out as you let out a deep breath.
“If you’re so interested in them why didn’t you take muggle studies?” Draco asked in a snarky voice.
“I wasn’t very interested in their way of life,” you answered. “I just needed to know enough to blend in and get by.”
“Why?” The blond boy asked. “It’s not like you’ll ever be living with them.”
You made a sound of acknowledgment with a hint of agreement. Draco was right in the fact that you had no plans of living amongst muggles at any point. There was simply no need. Even without a job you had inherited enough to live comfortably in a wizarding district for the foreseeable future. You wouldn’t need to resort to making a living in the muggle world as you had no desire to limit or hide the fact that you could do magic.
“Too bad neither of us brought a change of clothes,” you complained as you laid back atop the bed. “I’d love to get out of this dress.”
“So take it off,” Draco said as he maintained a straight face.
You gave him a deadpan stare in return. Sure you had stripped the night before but that had been your own decision. Plus you had done that because you had needed to get out of the wet pieces. Avalon had been warm but wearing wet formal clothes to bed would have been highly uncomfortable. This time your clothes weren’t wet and stripping down had been Draco’s idea. Somehow you got the feeling he wasn’t thinking with the head on his shoulders. Which in turn reminded you of how hungry you were...in more ways than one.
You stood up after removing your shoes, keeping eye contact with him. Draco seemed entranced as you stared at him, eyes bright and lit with an inhuman blue glow.
“Unzip me,” unlike the prior night it wasn’t a question so much as a command.
You noticed that his movements were almost awkward as you started to turn around. It was obvious he was an awkward thirteen year old by the mixed expression filling his face. Thirteen years old; practically still a kid.
You blinked in confusion as you tried to piece together the odd sensation of missing something. Why had you stood up again? Why were you facing the bed?
You tried to shake off the confusion as quickly as you could before Draco caught on. You shivered in surprise when you felt him unzipping your dress completely. The quiver your insides did as he lingered behind you was of another variety; you frowned at the errant sensation.
“Thanks,” you said despite the awkwardness and confusion.
Had you asked him to unzip you? Was that why you’d moved? The idea didn’t feel untrue but at the same time something about it felt strange.
You felt him grab you from behind into a rather loose hug. Your frown continued as you looked down at his hands. It wasn’t that you were angry at him or anything but the sudden affection seemed strange. And when you felt him step in closer to tighten his arms, you placed your hand on his. It seemed the natural thing to do; otherwise you would have had your arms hanging awkwardly over his. At least this way you could be assured he didn’t decide to shift them to a less innocent place.
“Do you want the first shower?” You asked after a lingering moment of silence.
Now it was his turn to be confused. “What?”
“They might not have your favorite soaps but it’s worth washing up,” you continued as you took a deep breath.
“You want to take a bath right now?” He asked in disbelief.
“At least a shower.”
Gently you moved his hands from around you until you were able to slip away to the side. Apparent Draco didn’t appreciate your maneuverability if the frown on his face was anything to go by. You made sure to avoid going through any thought of his as you kept your gaze down. You walked around him to the small aisle between the two single beds. At which point you busied yourself with taking the flat sheet off of your temporary bed while keeping your unzipped dress up.
“I thought you needed more energy.”
“Not really,” you told him honestly, smoothing out the bed once more as you remade it sans the flat sheet.
Could you have used more? Yes - always. You didn’t know if you had a max capacity for energy to be honest. You just knew that while you could have used more, you didn’t need it. Craving and wanting was different from needing after all.
“Fine. Take the first shower then.”
He seemed upset. You could have figured out why he was upset if you had just looked at the disappointed expression on his face, but you avoided doing that. Instead you took the flat sheet with you to the bathing room before closing the door behind you.
