“Unbelievable!” Ginny snarled the next morning at breakfast. Owl post had just arrived and as the group ate, Ginny read her mail, while Matt and Hermione looked through the paper. Matt looked up from the Daily Prophet and swallowed his bite of apple. He and Draco had been swapping back and forth on which apples they preferred more. Draco leaned, as always, towards Granny Smith, enjoying the tart flavor. Matt tended to like Fuji apples due to their sweetness, but he would concede that Granny Smith apples were quite tasty as well.
“What is it?” Matt asked, curious as ever.
“My mother! She’s impossible! I’m not even sure if I’m going to back home, honestly! I might just go straight from King’s Cross to Grimmauld Place and ask George to pick up my things the next time he’s there.” Ginny said, frustrated.
“Do we want to even know what this is all about?” Hermione asked.
“Read!” Ginny thrust the letter into the center of the table, and everyone leaned over to look.
Dear Ginny,
I do not know what has come over you as of late, turning your back on your brother like you have done. I thought family meant more to you than that! I hope you will be happy to learn, however, that our dear little Ron has finally found true love. Not like what he had with that harlot, Hermione Granger. She was always a bad influence on our Ron. She has even been a bad influence on poor dear Harry. I hope you and he both come to your senses soon.
Anyway, Ron’s started dating Padma Patil, isn’t that lovely? She is that up-and-coming writer for Daily Prophet. She is a lot like Rita Skeeter, you know. Really has a taste for the story, knows how to really grab people’s attention! Ron’s already talking about proposing and they just got together last month! It is so exciting. I was sure I would be planning yours and Harry’s wedding before Ron’s! Merlin knows Granger was not going to get married until who knows when. At any rate, Ron said he had a lovely date with Padma in Hogsmeade for Valentine’s Day. Said he missed you though, I thought for sure you and Harry would be there. The two of you better not be doing anything untoward! We do not want any babies out of wedlock, now! I hear that is quite common in America. You do not want to be like those people.
Anyway, best of luck with your exams. I’m expecting a lot of N.E.W.T.s!
Love,
Mum
“Well…shit.” Matt swore and sat back down, leaning on his right elbow, chin resting on his fist.
“What in Merlin’s name?! As if I would keep someone waiting for marriage. One year, not even! Just to finish school!” Hermione huffed. “And what was that business about Americans?”
“She must have found out about my mom not being married to my dad.” Matt said.
“Oh of course! How could I have forgotten? Once your name was cleared and the Ministry for Magic began to work on your Visa, they would have notified MACUSA, they must, it’s the law. So, all your records would have been sent to the British Ministry as soon as the request went in.” Hermione replied.
“I didn’t think of that. Of course, it makes sense.”
“I’ll wager the whole Ministry is talking about you. That’s really rare for a wizard to immigrate like that.” Ginny said. “I’m sure my father heard about it and told my mother.”
“It doesn’t help they knew about you before the school year started…I may have talked about you to them before I broke up with Ron and we started dating.” Hermione admitted. “I stopped Arthur from trying to ask questions at the Ministry about you, while we were figuring out your memory and what happened.”
“It’s ok.” Matt said with a sigh. “Oh, great…” he said flipping the paper over.
Unstable Students: American Awkwardness at Hogwarts
The American wizard, Matt Santini, recently revealed to be the only survivor of the Ilvermorny Castle Disaster, may not be entirely stable. Padma Patil, your exclusive Daily Prophet correspondent can reveal, sources inside the prestigious school say that Santini is not at all in good condition. The boy takes routine fits, outbursts of anger at other students, and one source even claims he threatened her.
‘He said he would cut me; see what color my blood is. He’s a real psychopath.’ Says Pansy Parkinson, a seventh-year student at Hogwarts, one of Santini’s classmates.
‘I saw him being taken to the hospital wing too. He collapsed. He’s in there a lot and no one but the most hardened students will even talk to him. The new Transfiguration Professor, Professor Sharp, doesn’t trust him. He’s always acting up in his class and getting detentions. He’s a real menace to the school.’ Parkinson says.
Fear not, dear reader, for Padma Patil is on the case! We can reveal that in fact, Santini’s instability goes all the way back to the beginning of the school year. Prone to anger, the American was brazen enough to attack auror Ronald Weasley in broad daylight at Platform 9 ¾ on September First of last year. Auror Weasley was at the station for heightened security purposes as students were preparing to leave for Hogwarts for their first year under new Headmistress Minerva McGonagall. As he was seeing his youngest sibling, seventh year student Ginevra Weasley onto the train and his then long-time girlfriend Hermione Granger, Weasley was attacked by the American. This unprovoked assault occurred in front of not only the entire Weasley family but Granger and fellow auror and Chosen One, Harry Potter.
This evidence is further conclusion that indeed Matthew Santini is highly dangerous and unstable. His recent mental breakdown, warranting a multiple night stay in the Hogwarts Hospital wing can only mean his mental state is deteriorating at an alarming rate.
Speaking with St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, a top expert says that:
‘It is possible, that the explosion and subsequent head injury resulted in some brain damage.’ My contact at St. Mungo’s goes on to further state ‘With his past behavior of violence, continued random outbursts of anger, and collapsing at school requiring medical professionals to handle, yes, it’s safe to say there’s definitely damage to his brain. Doubtful he’s pretending or looking for attention at this point. No, I would say that he’s likely very disturbed and a danger to the school and wizarding society as a whole. Who knows what kind of damage he could do? He could attack innocents, children at the school or worse, expose us all to the Muggles. No, he’s better off under constant observation and heavy medication. Probably for the rest of his natural life.’
There it is, St. Mungo’s believes Matthew Santini should be immediately removed from Hogwarts and placed under their watchful care, where he can no longer harm himself or anyone else. Padma Patil, writing to you from the headquarters of the Daily Prophet here in London.
“Oh, they can’t be serious!” Hermione shouted and shoved the paper away from herself.
“You know what I can’t figure out?” Matt asked rhetorically.
“Your homework.” Draco responded immediately.
“How to dress properly.” Ginny quipped.
“How to cook.” Ernie said from a few seats down.
“Really Ernie? After that last meeting?” Matt asked, referring to their cooking club. “I expect it from them,” Matt gestured to the others at the table. “But not you.”
“Sorry, I was going with the flow…”
Matt took a deep breath and sighed.
“What I was going to say is, what I can’t figure out is how Padma knows all this stuff? She’s not even here. So how does she know what’s going on inside the school? She must have interviewed Pansy on Valentine’s Day, but everything else?”
“This reminds me of Rita all over again. Except, there’s no random animals appearing where they shouldn’t be. So, it’s unlikely she’s another unregistered Animagus.” Hermione said. “That and even though she was a Ravenclaw, if she’s anything like her sister, it’s unlikely she’s up to going through all the steps to become one.”
“Yeah, that’s an immensely complicated process to get right. We had a student try it once…” Matt said and shuddered. “She got everything right, registered her intent with MACUSA, had the transfiguration professor helping her and it still went…wrong.”
“What happened?” Luna asked.
“Claire Foilé had a bad Mandrake leaf. It was plucked from a dead Mandrake, and when she went to turn…it was supposedly horrifying to see. They never let us see the body it was so bad.” Matt replied.
Hermione clapped her hand to her mouth.
“So, that’s why they regulate it so much.” Draco said. Matt nodded.
“That and well, you see the damage Rita caused here.” Neville piped up. There were murmurs of agreement all around.
Soon breakfast was over, and the group all headed to their class. Matt and Hermione were heading for Transfiguration when Matt, already looking glum, started to talk to Hermione.
“I think, maybe you’re right. Can you write to your ‘friend’, Rita Skeeter?” he asked.
“Come around to my way of thinking, have you?” Hermione asked, smiling.
“Yeah.” Matt said as they entered the classroom.
“I see you are back on your feet, Mr. Santini.” Professor Sharp said. “Good, because if you fail today, I’ll have a nice stack of detentions waiting for you.” Sharp grinned.
Sharp began the lesson, giving them a long lecture on the theory behind the transformations they were about to attempt. The magic itself was extraordinarily complex, involving transfiguring multiple small, non-animate objects into one single living object. Matt and Hermione took detailed notes and for once, Matt was able to accomplish the actual transfiguration of a barrel of pickles into a panda bear and back again, at the same time as Hermione.
“Hm, seems as though you might have a chance yet.” Sharp remarked to his two top students. “However, your panda still smells like pickles. That’ll be a weeks’ worth of detention, Santini.”
“What?! Professor I –“ Matt protested.
“Make it two then! Care to try for a third? Perhaps a whole month?” Sharp turned on him. Matt closed his mouth and sat down. “That’s what I thought. You don’t fool me. You’re nothing remarkable, outside of your friends who you didn’t even know before this year. Maybe the papers are right, you might be better in St. Mungo’s. At least there we wouldn’t be wasting resources teaching you.” Sharp looked smugly over to Hermione as class ended.
The end of February extinguished itself and March quickly rolled in. Every evening Matt spent with one of the teachers, with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest, with Filch cleaning the corridors and bathrooms, with Madam Pomfrey cleaning bedpans in the Hospital Wing, with Professor Slughorn sorting potion ingredients by hand or with Madam Hooch on a broomstick cleaning the outside windows of the school.
Routinely he came back late to the dorms, fell asleep, and was right back up the next morning for classes. Each week Sharp would find something new to give him more detentions over. Even though he was progressing at the same rate as Hermione. She was impressed he could keep up with how little time he actually had. However, his detentions also meant he had no time to practice his flying with Harry. Although Harry’s lessons had an immense impact on him, Matt was not as capable as he would have liked to have been. He could fly higher than he ever had been able to before, but his speed decreased the higher he went. Thankfully, no one other than Harry knew about this, and Harry was not letting anything slip. Matt thought that Harry might have been aware of how he had been targeted by Sharp.
As the weeks dragged on, Matt became increasingly exhausted. He was never in the common room, except for passing through to go to classes or returning to go to bed. He became increasingly run down, often not changing clothes, and simply sleeping in what he had on the day before. Mealtimes did little to restore his energies and even his work in classes slipped.
It became alarming that his grades began to fall, and he started to hand in substandard homework. Hermione would not copy her work, but she was close to duplicating it, making some slight alterations to language, to better sound like Matt and letting him sign his name to it. It went against her usual hard line on earning grades, but it pained her to see her boyfriend suffering so much.
One day after a particularly difficult lesson in Defense Against the Dark Arts, with the class attempting to learn wandless magic, Matt paused. Suddenly, there was Neville, Luna, Ernie, Hannah, Rolf, Draco, and Astoria filing into the classroom. Hermione stood by Matt and wrapped her arm around him. Ginny stood and nodded to the others.
“Professor Potter.” Luna began. “We’ve all got some concerns about Matt.”
“What is it, Luna?” Harry asked, expectantly. Matt looked confused.
“It’s Professor Sharp, sir.” Draco said, addressing Harry formally for the first time ever.
“It’s become clear that the good transfiguration professor, and our deputy headmaster, has taken a rather nasty disliking to our American friend here.” Rolf said as he moved to the front of the group. Matt was surprised, he had only had a few passing conversations with the Scamander boy and one epic snowball fight and had no idea he cared. “It’s obvious the professor hates him, sir.”
Harry nodded his understanding.
“It’s pretty bad. Matt loves our Cooking Club. Even Whisper thinks something is off, he’s missed about a dozen meetings in the last two months.” Hannah said.
“Who’s Whisper?” Harry asked, confused.
“He’s the House Elf who leads the club. He’s very fond of Matt, likes the suggestions and inspirations an American pallet brings.” Ernie said.
“I know I don’t know him well, sir, but even I think this is bit unusual.” Astoria said speaking up. “Matt’s a dedicated student and he’s not afraid of Pansy or my sister. He’s a great cook, too. You see, I’m in the cooking club as well. Along with Draco, Ernie, Hannah, and a few others. We miss him. This is…well…wrong.”
“It’s bad Harry. Look at him. He’s not sleeping, out ‘til all hours of the night with Filch and Hagrid.” Neville said in turn. Matt tried not to look as tired as he felt.
“His grades have slipped too.” Draco added.
“Please, Harry. You’re head of Gryffindor House; Matt was one of the top students in the school. Just behind me. You’ve got to do something. Step in, speak to McGonagall. She doesn’t take classes anymore, so she can’t see what’s happening. Astoria’s right, this is wrong. He’s suffering and so are we!” Hermione exclaimed. There were tears in her eyes and she held onto Matt, clinging almost out of desperation.
“You know what it’s like, Harry, having a professor dislike you. Having to watch someone you care about hurt. Please. We’re asking for an intervention here. Matt’s too bloody proud to say something himself, so we’re doing it for him.” Ginny pleaded.
“Thanks guys.” Matt said, his voice was weak from both emotion and exhaustion.
“I can’t override Professor Sharp, but I can talk to him, and I can talk to Professor McGonagall.” Harry said with a sigh. “That is, if you’re ok with it, Mr. Santini?”
Matt took a deep breath.
“Everything they’re saying is true. I’m barely keeping it together. I’m not one who usually needs help or asks for it. But…I admit…that they might be right. So, yeah, if you can help, that would be appreciated.” Matt said. Hermione slipped an arm around his back and rubbed. She knew better than anyone except Harry how hard this must be on him.
