Chapter 47 Vault Number 1
Inside the room was row after row of floor to ceiling shelves, every inch filled with crates. Both side walls were lined with enormous drawers, all labelled. At the far end of the room, colour was visible on the wall.
From where Severus was standing in the doorway, it was impossible to make out what it was because it was obstructed by the shelves.
“Nina, come in. It is safe.”
He felt her hand slip into his and looked down at her.
“If we had an army of helpers, it would still take years to search through all of this.”
“It’s not what I expected, Severus.”
And what did you expect?”
“I don’t know. I thought it would be just a few boxes with pictures and maybe a letter or two. What’s that on the wall?” Nina pointed to the far end of the room.
“Shall we find out?”
Not waiting for an answer, he led her between the rows of shelves until they reached the wall. Nina was fascinated with what they found.
“Look at it. It’s beautiful. But what is it?”
“That Nina, is your family tree.” He bent low and moved along the wall. “Aha. Look here. Your name, there, see.”
Nina let her eyes rove over the mosaic’s medley of colours and names until she reached Severus. “’Nina Gweneth Manohel.” That’s my name. Who put it there?”
“That I do not know but I imagine that it is spelled to appear whenever one of your line is born. Look, there are your parents’ names.”
Kneeling down she read the names:
‘Theodore Mastus Manohel (M) Gweneth Nina.’
Dtr.
‘Nina Gweneth Manohel’ ( ASSIMILATOR )
She placed her fingertips against the names of her parents, brushing along them delicately as if they might shatter at her touch.
“Mummy.” She breathed. “Daddy.”
Severus had been studying more names on the tree when he heard her.
Kneeling down to face her, he saw slow tears trickling down her cheeks.
His fingers reached out and tenderly brushed them away, only to be replaced by more.
“Oh little bird.” He wept, holding her to him now and unable to hold back the heartache he felt inside at her sorrow.
“I didn’t even know their names, Severus.”
“You do now my darling. You do now.”
How long they stayed that way did not matter. When she sniffed he hoped, for her sake, that she was coming to terms with her grief. He lifted her to feet, drying her cheeks and turned her to face the wall, his actions slow and tender.
“Look Nina. The names of your ancestors, they go back over two thousand years.”
As Nina stared awestruck at where his hand indicated name after name, they discovered that each of the males held the surname Manohel. But the females held no surname whatsoever. All were named Nina Gweneth, or Gweneth Nina alternatively. All the Manohel descendants were male, until Nina.
“Why is my last name on there? None of the other females have surnames. I don’t understand that.”
“Look at the pattern of births. Until you, all descendants were male. You are the first daughter to bear the name of Manohel. And from what I can see, the only living descendant.”
But why isn’t my mum’s last name on there? None of the women’s last names are on here.”
“That I do not know. Perhaps only the Manohel line was considered important. But there must be a link some how, other wise why would you all have the same two Christian names?”
Severus found a set on rolling steps fastened to a rail over to the left and climbed to the top. He almost toppled off when he found her earliest descendants and was visibly trembling when he placed his feet back on the ground.
“Severus what’s wrong? You’ve gone white.”
“You. Your…Oh my.” He sat on the floor, his arms wrapped around his knees as he tried to digest what he had learned.
“What? Tell me.”
“You…are the sole descendant of every God and Goddess in our world. Even the God Manohel himself. Nina and Gweneth, both names of Goddesses.”
“Yeah. But that doesn’t make me one. I’m not a Goddess Severus. I’m not.”
“You may be. I do not know.”
“You do know. You have to. I don’t want to be one. I just want some pictures of my mum and dad, get rid of Scaly and be normal like everybody else.”
Severus hadn’t a clue how to respond to her.
“Come on. These drawers are labelled. You start this end and I shall start down there. See if we can find those photographs. If I am honest, all of this is way above my head at the moment.”
With a nod, Nina moved to the front of the room and began opening drawers willy nilly. There were letters and parchments, scrolls by the hundreds. None of it meant a thing to her. After the fifteenth or sixteenth drawer, she slammed it shut, stood straight and thought about her parents.
When Severus heard the bang from the slammed drawer he started and looked over to where Nina was standing with her eyes closed. Even from over there, he could tell that her breathing was shallow as her chest heaved in and out rapidly. He strode towards her and laid a hand on her shoulder.
Nina didn’t notice as she turned and moved to the left and made her way down an aisle of shelving.
He followed and three steps in she stopped and opened her eyes.
Her hand lifted and a large box moved off the highest shelf and drifted down to stand on the floor before them.
“This is the one. I’m sure of it.” She told him trying to see over the edge of the crate.
Gripping the rim she managed to hitch herself up just enough to hang her nose over the edge.
“I can’t see a blasted thing. It’s too high.” She told him as she rubbed her nose.
“Perhaps if you come to the front and use the door?”
Nina went pink. She hadn’t seen a door.
“Well you could have told me.”
“I just did. Go on, open it.”
She lifted the latch and the door swung open easily. This was what Nina had hoped for, what she had half expected, half hoped to see when they first entered this room. “Oh Severus look. It’s my mum and dad. At least I think it is.”
Standing on top of a small desk to the right of the crate was a portrait of a tall, well built handsome man with shoulder length blue/black hair and eyes the colour of coal. The woman was petite, like Nina. Her eyes were a startling violet colour and even filled with tears they twinkled more even then Albus’.
Severus imagined that Nina would look much the same way as she grew older, only with her fathers colouring and eyes. They were waving at Nina and smiling. The woman’s tears spilled over as she looked at her daughter.
“I believe you are right.”
His arm around her shoulder he led her toward the portrait.
“Mum? Dad? Is it really you?”
“Yes my darling.”
Severus was slightly startled when the woman in the portrait spoke.
“We have missed you Nina.” Her father said. “Where have you been? Fifteen years we have waited for you child.”
“I’m sorry daddy. I didn’t know about you. Not until a few months ago when I went to Hogwarts.”
“So you are staying at Hogwarts now? Have you found your soul partner?”
“Yes. He’s here with me now. Severus. This is my mum and dad.”
Severus took a step closer and bowed. “Mr. and Mrs. Manohel. It is an honour to make your acquaintance.”
“You are Severus Snape. Potions Master at Hogwarts are you not?”
“I am Sir. How did you know?”
“We know many things Severus.” Nina’s mum told him. “Including all of the happenings at Hogwarts Your love for our child runs deep within you Severus. That is good. She has great need of that love.”
“Indeed. Am I take it that you know and approve of our relationship?”
“We have known of it since before you met her Severus. Before you were born even, this information has been passed down through all the generations of Manohel’s.” Mr Manohel told him.
Severus was staggered by this information. “You knew? And Nina’s life, from when you…passed until she reached Hogwarts. What of that?”
“Unfortunately we know nothing of that. All contact was lost on the night we were attacked. And as our child had not yet come into her own powers we had no way of finding out. We knew only that she was still alive. For that we thank the Gods.”
“I’ve missed you both so much.” Nina sobbed to them. “Can I take you back to Hogwarts? Your picture I mean. I’ve got my own room. We can talk to each other.”
Her mother smiled at her. “It is what we hoped you would do. There is much to catch up on. Much for you to learn. We shall be waiting for you on your return. You need do nothing.”
Nina’s mum turned to Severus.
“We too shall speak. You are a brave young man Severus. Take her now. Show her how to live. We can speak more later.”
The portrait stilled and slowly faded from view.
Nina and Severus were both overcome and said nothing as he led her back into the main chamber and closed the door. He cleared his throat before he spoke.
“It seems I am under orders to show you how to live. Shall we proceed?”
Nina grinned and grabbed a couple of bags from a bench nearby.
“Yeah. Come on, fill em up as much as you can.”
Like kids in a candy shop, they piled the golden Galleons into the bags until they were full. She grinned at him as she struggled to hold the heavy bag.
“Nina you do not need all of this. You could buy the whole of Hogwarts and hardly notice a dent in one of these bags. And they‘re bloody heavy.”
“Huh. I thought you were intelligent.” She told him, waving her hand and reducing the weight of both bags.
He scowled at her. “Do not question my intelligence. I was merely trying to make a point.”
“Of course you were. Come on. Let’s go buy things.”
“What do you want to buy?”
“I don’t know. Think of something. I’ve never had the chance to buy things before.”
Severus sighed. He had a feeling that he would be forced to shop until he dropped. And it was his own doing.
“Come on. We had best see Mr. Tanaya and let him know that we are leaving.”
She smirked lopsidedly and grabbed his hand.
Lani Tanaya followed what was now almost a tradition and fell of his chair as Nina and Severus appeared in front of his desk, looking for all the world as if they had done nothing out of the ordinary.
“This is not possible. How did you do that?”
“Well I am the Assimilator, Mr Tanaya. Or had you forgotten?”
“No Miss Manohel I had not. You just took me by surprise. It should not be possible to leave the vaults by apparition.”
“It probably isn’t Mr Tanaya. But I do not apparate. I appear. So I wont be needing your cart anymore. Thank you for you help today. I will want to see you again. Do I need to make an appointment?”
Severus was standing in front of a mirror in Lani’s office repairing the bald patched on his head.
“Not at all. I shall always be available to you at a moment’s notice.”
“Thanks Mr. Tanaya. Bye.”
Severus was impressed with her. He shrunk their money bags and they left the Director’s office.
They had only taken three steps when Lucius Malfoy approached them, an arrogant smirk on his face. His eyes scanned Nina briefly but he chose to ignore her.
“Severus, having money troubles? It must be bad if you have called into the Director’s office.”
“On the contrary Lucius. Mr. Tanaya has been falling over backwards to help us.”
Nina giggled at his choice of words. It had been hard enough to hold back the laughter when Lani had fallen off his chair.
“Really.” Lucius hissed. His eyes narrowed. “And why would the Director of Gringotts wish to help you? Even I do not get preferential treatment from him.”
Nina took a step closer to Lucius
“Perhaps Mr Malfoy, because as a couple, Severus and I are rich enough to buy out the whole wizarding world from the small change in our pockets. And perhaps, because I am more pureblood then you could ever be.”
“Severus.” Malfoy looked at her with distain. “What utter nonsense have you been feeding the little chit?”
“Oh she is quite correct Lucius. After studying her family tree, which incidentally goes back over two thousand years, we have discovered that Miss Manohel is in fact, a Goddess. It is a shame that the same cannot be said about your own lineage is it not? Good day to you Lucius.”
The couple brushed past Malfoy, and began walking away, leaving him standing with his mouth open in disbelief.
“Miss Manohel.”
Nina turned when she heard her name being called. Lani came rushing up to her and bowed.
“Forgive me but you left your cloak in my office before I took you down to your vault. It was remiss of me not to give it to you when you had finished.” He handed Nina her cloak.
“Thanks Lani. And call me Nina from now on. Is that okay?”
“Most certainly Nina. I thank you for the honour.”
Lani made his way back to his office and Nina and Severus turned their eyes to Malfoy. The man visibly blanched at the familiar interaction between the most important goblin in Gringotts wizarding bank and Nina Manohel.
“Bye Mr. Malfoy. You know you really should have a holiday. You look awfully pale.”
Nina smiled pleasantly at him as she took Severus’ proffered arm and he led her out of the bank.
“You are incorrigible.” Severus told her as they descended the steps outside.
“And I have no idea what that means but I like the sound of it. Thanks.”
Both were laughing as they stepped into the street.
“First stop is for food. I am hungry.” Severus demanded.
She didn’t argue. Her belly was rumbling loudly.
“We had best eat in. It may rain. I can already hear thunder.” He poked her in the gut.
“You…you…”
“Better half?” He finished for her, laughing.
“Aaagh. I’ll think of something bad to call you later.”
They stopped at the first restaurant they saw and went in. Severus’ presence already commanded respect and they were immediately shown to a table. The waiter handed them menus and asked if they would care for an appetizer while they were choosing. Nina looked at Severus a little unsure.
“Thank you no.” He told the waiter who bowed and stepped aside.
Nina looked at her menu disheartened. “Severus.”
“Mmm?” He lifted his eyes above the menu.
“I don’t know what it says.” She whispered.
He was glad that the menu covered his mouth as he grinned but Nina could see the creases at the sides of his eyes as he did. “It’s not funny. What’s it written in?”
“Latin. You speak it fluently. I would have thought you would be able to read it also.”
“Well I can’t. I don’t know what I’m saying when I speak it. It just, sort of comes out of my mouth.”
He could not hold back a snort as he tried to school his face into a bland expression. “Tell me what you would like and I shall see if it is available.”
“Fish, chips and mushy peas.”
Severus was appalled. “Why on earth would you want your peas to be mashed?”
It was Nina’s turn to snort. “I don’t. They’re a…oh forget it. Normal peas then. I’ll make them into mushy them myself.”
He ordered her fish, French fries and garden peas and lamb cutlets for himself, along with a bottle of house wine and a glass of milk.
“Why do I have to have milk? Can’t I have some wine same as you?”
“Not if you wish to go shopping afterwards. I refuse to carry you round the shops.”
Nina sat and looked around her. Hanging from the ceiling were ornate chandeliers, the wall sconces were also crystal. Every table had a delicate crystal candle stick. All the upholstery was in plush royal blue velvet. Even the table linens were of the finest quality, the cutlery solid silver.
“Severus, do you always eat at places like this?”
“When the opportunity arises I do. Why?”
“I just wondered. It’s a bit…”
“Marco’s is a fine establishment Nina. You would be hard pressed to find better cuisine than here. What is the problem?”
“No problem. I’m just not used to it I suppose. It’s sort of fancy, and I’m not.”
“Nina. If you were ‘Fancy’ as you put it. I would not be with you now. You are a lovely young woman. Beautiful, honest, pure.”
“And soon I won’t get my head through the door. I just mean it’s a bit posh.”
“It is not posh. It is of high quality and standards. It meets my standards, so I do not see why it does not meet yours. Standards are a good thing Nina. Get used to them.”
The food arrived and the debate stopped as they both enjoyed their meals.
True to her word, once the waiter had left Nina turned her fresh garden peas into mushy peas and added a pat of butter. As it was melting she added salt and vinegar to her fish and ships.
Severus looked appalled as she tucked in to what he considered green slop, but Nina ate her peas with relish.
“Does that green dollop have the same effect as beans?” He asked trying to appear casual.
Nina grinned. “If you mean do they make you fart, then yes if you eat too many. Not as much as the beans though.”
“But the amount you have is not considered too many I hope.”
“No. Why?”
“Because we are sharing a bed tonight that is why.”
That set her off laughing. “Don’t worry. There’s only one thing that’ll be lifting the sheets tonight and it wont be wind.”
He smiled, though more in relief then anything else. They finished off with a simple fruit salad and fresh cream and left to hit the shops. When they finally arrived at the Leaky cauldron, Nina had bought nothing. She had loved looking in the shops and seeing all there was too see. But there was nothing that she actually wanted. Several times she tried to persuade Severus to buy something for himself but he said that there was nothing that he needed.
“So now we’ve got two bags of money and you wouldn’t even use it to pay for the meal Severus. Why? I don’t understand.”
“Because I am a man of principles that is why. I may not be as wealthy as you are but I am reasonably wealthy. I do not need you to pay my way for me.”
She threw herself on the bed in a sulk. “Bloody stupid if you ask me. It’s your money as much as mine. I thought we were a couple.”
“We are a couple, and as such it is my place to support you, not the other way around.”
“Well I think that’s daft.”
“You may think as you wish, but that is how things are and it is how things shall remain.”
“So what do we do with all that money then? It’s just sitting there waiting to be spent. Can’t you think of anything to spend it on?”
“Regardless of what you say Nina, it is not my money but yours. I cannot decide what is to be done with it.”
“Aw Severus this is ridiculous. If it’s mine then I’m giving half of it to you. There. It’s a gift so you can’t refuse.”
“Oh but I can. Besides, you have something I want much more then your money.” He looked at her, his eyes smouldering as he stepped up to the bed and pounced on her.
“I wonder what that could be Severus Ignatius Snape.”
“Right.” He roared as he pinned her down and began tickling her in the ribs, the stomach, ending up trapping her feet and tickling the soles of her feet.
“Ah stop please.” She screamed, laughing hysterically. “I’m gonna pee myself.”
He finally released her as he tried to control his own laughter but did not let her go. “Please Severus. I really do have to pee.”
“I shall let you go when you have made me a promise to never offer me money again. I do not need it.”
“What? No. That’s daft.”
“Then you shall wet the bed.” He told her and started tickling her again.
“Alright. Alright. I promise.” She laughed.
They both felt the surge of magic as the oath took hold. “There. Now you are bound by oath. You cannot go back on it. Now go pee and have a shower.”
When Nina emerged from the bathroom her face had brightened up and her eyes were shining.
“Oh dear. I know that look. What are you scheming?”
“Nothing. But I’ve had an idea.” She told him all about it. “But I need to talk to Albus about it too. Can we go back early tomorrow? I need you to be there.”
“If you wish. I am going for my shower. Do not bother to get dressed yet. I have plans for you.” He purred.
She scrambled into bed to wait. Shivering expectantly at the tone of his voice.
It did not take long for him to return, his hair still damp as he ripped back the covers and drank in the sight of Nina’s beautiful naked body.
“This is what I want from you woman. Not money or wealth. Were we both paupers, I would still be the richest wizard in the world with you by my side.”
His words moved her more deeply then any actions could ever have done. Though right now, his action were doing quite a lot to move her in another way.
Nina was sore the next morning. Severus had forgot to pack any little green bottles and had been quite vigorous last night. She refused to go down to breakfast at the Leaky cauldron and Severus had Tom send them breakfast in bed. As soon as they finished eating Nina had them back directly into Severus’ bed. “Dammit Nina. We haven’t even packed. Our clothes and everything are still in the room.”
“No they’re not they’re on the sofa in your study. But I need that potion Severus. I can‘t believe you didn‘t bring any.”
He went to his closet and threw on a pair of trousers before padding barefoot and bare chested to his potions stores. They had already depleted the supply in the bathroom during the week and he hoped he still had some left in his cupboard. He was in luck, one bottle. The Potions Master made a mental note to make some more today. It would only take an hour.
As soon as she downed the contents her mood improved. “You know, you look really sexy like that.”
“Don’t. I have to make some more healing potion. That was the last bottle and if you Mmmm oh Yessss.”
He was too late. Nina had sent his trousers flying across the room somewhere and her mouth was busy doing the most amazing things to his lower body, namely his cock. It did not take long before he was deep into her throat, clinging onto the bedpost to support himself before his legs gave way as she swallowed so hard he thought he could feel her heartbeat.
Of course he couldn’t, but it certainly felt that way.
As soon as he recovered he pushed her back on the bed and returned the favour, taking her to fulfilment several times before relenting and letting her go. She was exhausted and fell asleep.
He smiled, dressed and went to make the new batch of healing potion.
Already awake and dressed when he returned, Nina was eager to see Albus.
“You can help by putting these bottles in the bathroom cabinet while I take the rest to my Potions cupboard. Then we shall see if Albus is available.”
She practically threw the bottles into the cabinet and rushed back to the study. Severus joined her and went to the fireplace to call Albus and see if he was free.
Severus pulled her through the floo and into the Headmaster’s office.
Nina sneezed a couple of times. “I hate that floo. All the soot goes up my nose.” She told him, brushing herself down.
Neither man mentioned the long streak of soot along her left cheek.
“Sit down.” Albus told them. “Lunch is on it’s way. Did you enjoy your time in Diagon Alley?”
“Oh it was smashing, but wait till you here about Gringotts. It was something else. Oh and I‘ve got a picture of my mum and dad. We talked.”
Suddenly she remembered that the portrait was probably in her rooms. She would have to go see them when she finished here.
“That is marvellous news.” Albus told her. “And you said that you talked. That is wonderful”
“The picture. They talk from the picture, don’t they Severus? You spoke to them too.”
Albus looked at her amused.
“Indeed Albus we did converse.”
“We got this too.” Nina placed the two bags of gold on Albus’ desk. “Only we had nothing to spend it on. And there’s tons more of it.”
The Headmaster opened one of the bags and his eyebrows disappeared into his hair.
“These are solid gold.”
“Yeah I know and there’s billions of them. But the thing is I don’t need them all and I’ve had a couple of idea’s. Look at this.” Nina passed him her bank book.
“Oh my.” Albus gulped. “And what is it that you wish to do?”
“Well there are others aren’t there? Like me and Samuel. Others who have lost their parents to Death Eaters and Severus says that not all of them have relatives to take them in. So I was thinking that we could set up a fund or something, buy somewhere big and have people there, nice people, to look after them. What do you think?”
“I think it is admirable. There are many such children in our world who could benefit from this idea. Am I correct in assuming that you wish me to proceed with the outline plans?”
“Please. I don’t know what needs to be done but there’s something else. Has Mr. Lupin got a job yet?”
“He has not. Unfortunately the wizarding world is still mistrustful of him. But he understands that it will take time.”
“So what if you offered him a job organizing and running the home? He’ll get paid well and have his own house too. But don‘t mention me because if he‘s like Severus he might say no. Thinking it‘s charity or something. What do you think?”
Albus looked at her, eyes twinkling and a smile on his face. “I think that it is a marvellous idea. What say you Severus?”
“I quite agree Headmaster. But Nina would prefer to stay anonymous throughout.”
“Very well. If that is what you wish. I shall proceed as soon as possible.”
Two house elves winked in and set lunch out on the table near the fireplace.
Part way through the meal Nina put forward another of her ideas to Albus.
“Severus told me that you have a fund set up here for students that come from poorer families, to help them with books and things.”
“We do, though it very limited I’m afraid.”
“Not now it isn’t. I’ll tell Mr. Tanaya to let you have whatever you need when you need it.”
“That is very gracious of you Nina. Thank you.”
“No it’s not. I did nothing to earn that money. It may as well go to someone that needs it. If you think of anything else just tell Mr. Tanaya and he’ll see to it.”
“Lani Tanaya the director of Gringotts? You have spoken to him?”
“Yeah. He took us in his office and down to the vault. But I am never ever going in that stupid cart of his again.”
“His cart?”
“Yes.” Severus told him. “We were escorted by the director himself, and in his own personal cart.”
“That is quite an honour Nina. But I am afraid that the carts are the only means of getting to one’s vaults.”
“Actually Headmaster they are not. At least not for Nina.”
“So you can appear there also? How extraordinary.”
“I’ll need to go back though. There’s rooms that we haven’t even looked in yet. The vault is massive. You might want to come too. We haven‘t a clue what’s in there.”
“Thank you. I would enjoy that.”
As soon as lunch was over Nina left them talking so she could talk to her parents.
“Albus I truly have never seen anything like it in my life. It would be better if you were to see it in a pensive. I could not possibly tell you what it was like. And her family tree. Dear God‘s. I would never have believed it had I not seen with my own eyes.”
Two hours and three viewings of the pensive later Albus was still stunned.
“Would you leave this with me for a few days Severus? I really would like to view that family tree in more detail.”
“Certainly Albus. But you can see it for yourself if you so desire.”
“Yes, yes. But for now it is just too fascinating. I shall return it as soon as I have finished.” The headmaster told him distractedly, poising his wand over the pensive for another viewing.
Severus left him to it as he shook his head end entered the floo.
He was a bit disappointed to find Nina was not waiting for him but then remembered she wanted to talk to her parents. Deciding that it was kinder to leave her be he sat at his desk to catch up on some long overdue marking.
By early February, the Wizarding Orphans Foundation had been set up. Twenty five acres of open land had been purchased just a mile outside of Hogsmead and a large mansion built to accommodate the children. Things like that did not take long in the wizarding world. The building was colossal, had seven wings for the various age groups, one wing set aside for those of age to attend Hogwarts so they would have the choice to return there during the school holidays if they so wished. Two hundred house elf’s were taken on to help with the workload as well as staff, hand picked by Lupin, Dumbledore and Molly Weasley. Molly had a lot of spare time now that all her children were at Hogwarts and welcomed the chance to work with the children. The extra galleons she earned helped a great deal too. Counsellors were also brought in for the children.
An small agency was set up to hunt down records of the children sent to muggle prophases. Others who had been adopted or fostered were checked up on. If they were happy they were left alone, if things were not satisfactory the child was brought to Theodore House.
Several other large dwellings had been built on the estate to accommodate the wizarding staff that were employed there and a larger grander one for Remus Lupin, along with the deeds to the property. Remus was overwhelmed when he received the deeds and did not understand why he was given outright ownership of the house.
Whenever he asked Albus about his benefactor he was simply told that the patron wished to remain anonymous and that he was under oath not to reveal the persons identity.
“But why me Albus? I do not understand.”
“You have no need to understand Remus. Just be glad that you have found your rightful place in this world at last.”
Remus was grateful. He loved working with children. Everything they could ever need was provided for them. In fact they lived almost like royalty. No one went short of anything at Theodore House. So Remus had his own home, a substantial income that he did his utmost to earn, and more then anything, he had respect.
At Hogwarts there were many new students thanks to the now unlimited funding of the Hogswarts coffers. This also meant taking on a few extra staff. Especially as not all of the new students were first years, so extra tutelage was need to help the older ones catch up.
Every other weekend Severus or Albus would accompany Nina to her vault and explore a different room or look through crate after crate. Eventually Nina got bored and signed a document in front of Lani Tanaya, stating that Severus Snape and Albus any contents therein, not that they did. All the house quiddich teams were provided with new quiddich uniforms and the most recent racing brooms, thus ensuring that they were all equal. Though Nina still didn’t like quiddich much and only went to watch when Severus insisted, usually when Slytherin were played.
He ceased insisting when during one particularly intense match where the scores were even between Griffindor and Slytherin.
The players had been in the air for almost four hours, Nina was cold and tired and when she spied the Golden Snitch she started shouting at Harry and Draco, pointing to the Snitch and telling them to hurry up and catch it. When it managed to evade for the eleventh time Nina got carried away. Without thinking about what she was doing she held out her hand, wishing that she could just give them the blasted snitch and it sat nestled in her outstretched palm waiting for one of them to come and take it.
The match had to be declared a draw and a date set for a rematch. Nina was quite unpopular for a couple of weeks. Severus was absolutely livid with her. He was adamant that Slytherin would have won that match but for her stupidity.
Nina hadn’t meant to catch the Snitch. She was just frustrated that the seekers kept on losing site of it. Now no one at school would talk to her. Every time she entered the Great Hall they would glare at her.
Well except for Blaize who took great delight in the fact that she was always on her own now. He frequently tried to accost her in the corridors. He was sneaky, very sneaky. He knew that she could hurt him and that magic would have no affect on her. But physical contact she could do nothing about. He got to feel her up several times before she escaped him. He kept telling her what a freak she was and how no one at Hogwarts really liked her; that he was the only one who was willing to have anything to do with her.
Eventually Nina started to believe him. She stopped fighting him off all the time, though when he touched her she didn’t like it. It wasn’t the same as when Severus touched her but he was ignoring her too. After a few days Blaize wanted to take things further. He wanted to take her fully and the more Nina resisted the more persistent he became.
He had her pinned against the corner of the wall in a shadowed alcove set in the dungeon corridor. He’d managed to force one hand down her knickers and the other was holding her wrist, forcing her to rub at his erection through his trousers.
“Come on Nina. I know you let him do it Why not me? It’ll be good I promise.” He lowered his head to suck at a nipple through her blouse.
“No. I don’t want to, and Severus has never…”
“Rubbish. We all know he’s been rogering you. There’s been quite a few times when you’ve forgotten to use a silencing charm.”
“Whatever you may or may not have heard Mr. Zabini, Miss Manohel is not available to you or anyone else. And if you lay another hand on her you shall have me to deal with. Do you understand?”
Severus had felt her panic through the charmed bracelet he had given her and knew exactly where she was.
At the sound of that lethal voice they both looked up to see the murderous face of the Potions Master glaring down at them. His eyes were cold, hard and calculating. His wand was pressing hard into the side of Zabini’s neck.
The boy released his grip on Nina carefully. He did not want to make any sudden moves and have his head blasted off.
“Yes Sir.” He gulped.
“Good. Now leave my presence and do not come near her again. I do not make idle threats Mr Zabini. If I see you so much as look at her again, I will kill you. Slowly.” He spat.
Blaize shot down the corridor and out of sight.
“You. My study.” Severus told her, jabbing his wand in the direction of his rooms.
“NOW!” He shouted when she did not immediately respond. Severus turned abruptly, stalking to his door at full stride as Nina struggled to catch up.
As soon as she entered he slammed the door with enough force to cause a shower of masonry dust to fall around her. Nina was white with fear. She had never seen him this angry before. Without waiting to be told Nina went to sit on the chair in front of his desk. But Severus did not sit at his desk. Instead he paced up and down the floor of his study. She could hear his deep angry breathing, sense his rage.
‘Severus.’ She thought.
He ignored her, just as he had ignored all her thoughts over the past twelve days. She had pleaded with him to talk to her. Told him that she was sorry about the Snitch and he had taken no notice.
Now Zabini had been touching her. Touching her in places that only he should touch. And he, Severus Snape had driven her to it. He was more angry with himself then with her. But he could not tell her that. Could he?
‘Severus please. I’m sorry. I wouldn’t have let him. I told him no. I did.’
He still could not bring himself to answer. He stopped pacing and turned to look at her. She was sitting with her head down, hands wringing together in her lap and her shoulders shaking lightly.
“You let him touch you.” He breathed.
“No. I didn’t like it when he did that.”
“Then why? You still let him near you.”
He was the only one who would talk to me. You didn’t want anything to do with me. No one here really likes me here anyway. If I didn’t let him he wouldn’t have spoken to me either.”
“And that is your excuse. I am not speaking to you so you decide to go off in a huff and fuck someone else?”
“No! We didn’t. I just wanted someone to talk to. It wasn’t a huff. No ones taking to me since I caught that bloody stupid Snitch. No one. They all think I’m a freak anyway.”
“Says who?” he roared, whirling round to face her.
“Blaize told me. He might not be nice, but at least he was honest with me about what he wanted.”
He looked at her, stricken by her words. “No.” He told her. “He was not. He took advantage, nothing more. He knew you were vulnerable and he used that to his advantage. It is my fault. I should never have pushed you away over something so stupid.”
Nina was still sitting with her head down. She felt ashamed at what she had let Blaize do to her. But at the time she was lonely, she thought everyone hated her. Including Severus, and that was the worst of all.
Nina cried.
At the sound of her sobs he took her into his arms and let his own tears mingle with hers as he pressed his cheek to the side of her face, stroking her back as he told her how sorry he was.
Severus considered he was no better then Zabini in some ways. All she had ever tried to do was please him, him and others, never asking for anything in return. Nina wanted to give, not take. She hadn’t even wanted to go to the quiddich game. He had forced her into it, making her feel guilty for not showing him the proper support. He had taken his pleasure from her and cast her aside as soon as she did something that displeased him. Now he felt lower then a Flobberworm.
Lifting her gently in his arms he took her to the sofa and sat, cradling her in his arms, whispering apologies, telling her that he loved her, stroking her hair until he felt her breathing become slow and regular apart from the odd little hitch to her breath. Pulling his head back to look at her he was not surprised to find she was asleep.
Severus stood and gently lowered her onto the sofa before turning and heading through the connecting door to speak with her parents.
