Chapter 47
Paula ignored Bella and stepped over to where Severus waited with an unfathomable expression on his face, but she could sense the turmoil inside him. The anger and trepidation.
Turning her gaze one last time to the snake like visage of Voldemort, Paula gave him some parting words.
“Te malavel les i menkiva may sigo sar te may khav.”
“Come on.” Severus growled, his eyes widening as he grabbed her wrist again and hauled her from the room. “Hurry.” He told her as they quickly exited the building. “If Bella gets loose from Rudolphus she’ll be out here baying for our blood, well yours at any rate, and I prefer to keep mine where it is.”
Together they apparated back to Hogwarts.
“What the hell did you have to curse her for? She’ll never forget it you know.” They strode together towards Paula’s wagon.
“Ha! You are as bad as they Severus, a Gypsy speaks words you cannot understand and it has to be a curse.”
“Are you saying it was not?”
"Rinkeno mui and wafodu zee,
kitzi's the cheeros we dicks cattanē."
“It means;
‘A beautiful face and a black wicked mind,
often, full often together we find.’”
“Does that sound like a curse to you? It was a saying Severus, nothing more. If the foolish woman wishes to believe otherwise it is not my problem. Besides, it is no less than she deserves.”
“What about the other one, Goyle? What did you say to him?”
“The big one who called me a dirty thief?”
“Mã pee kek-komi, plastra lesti! Cease your revels, and run like the devils.”
“As for snake breath, I called him ‘Pookering kori‘. Penis tongue.”
Finally, Severus could not hold the bark of laughter that left him. “Oh Merlin. I am glad you did not translate that to him.”
“I cursed him as we left though.”
“You did? What did you say?”
“Te malavel les i menkiva may sigo sar te may khav.
May the malignant disease waist you even before I have my next meal.”
“Come, I have poteen drey the vurdon.”
“Poteen drey?”
“I have whiskey inside.”
Severus lengthened his stride, for once reaching the wagon ahead of her.
“Tattitatti and tullaben?”
Severus glared at her, causing her to smile.
“Baked potato’s and butter. Here.” Paula passed him a bowl with a large, hot potato straight from the stove, took the other for herself and added a big pat of butter to it before pouring two healthy measures of whiskey. “Not firewhiskey, but more than strong enough to burn a dragons throat.”
Severus studied the dark, almost tea coloured liquid in his glass, then downed it in one go. He let out a long breathy hiss as the whiskey burned it’s way down his gullet. “Dear God’s woman, this stuff should carry a health warning.” He croaked, eyes watering as he fought to take a breath.
“You get used to it, Gypsy made and Gypsy drunk. Ako's your peeapen!” ( here's to your health) Paula downed her drink in one, a small grimace her only reaction as she poured them both another. “Aukko tu pios adrey Romanes, your health is drunk in Romane.” Paula told him she’d been weaned on the whiskey so it did not have such an effect on her.
He sipped his second drink a little more carefully between bites of the potato. “For some reason this is the best baked potato I have ever eaten.”
Danger and fear give a hearty appetite Severus.”
“How could you be certain we would return to eat them?”
“Something you all call faith.”
“So did you manage to read his soul during all the evenings … activities?”
“What is left of it. His is a broken soul, it can never be healed. He is almost mulla, a corpse. Very powerful, but a mulla all the same. His other del, do you know what happened to them?”
Severus explained the horcrux’s, which ones were destroyed and which were not.”
“And Harry? He does not know, kak keeps it from him and forces you to do the same. Your Dark Lords del is destroying the boys own. Harry’s soul must be protected.”
“And just how do you propose we do that?”
“I will take care of it, he is kin. His soul will be sealed until it is safe to release it. The sarp, (serpent) it also holds del not of itself.”
“You mean Nagini, the Dark Lords familiar?”
“I do. She is Asian that snake, hamadryad, king cobra. A bite from her and the victim would likely have only an hour and a half to live.”
“Not as long as that, I have seen her kill in much less time.”
“Nai. You may have seen her bite, seen her feed, but the victim is not dead when she eats them.”
Severus grimaced and paled. “And you know this, how?”
“I travelled through Asia some years back. The sarp is big, around eighteen foot, but not the biggest I have come across.”
Paula had her back to him, removing items from various drawers and placing them on the counter in front of her.
“First comes paralysis as the venom attacks the nervous system. Then comes pain, blurred vision, nausea and sweating. The heart and lungs struggle as they slowly stop working. The mind hardly functions as the bodies organs become dysfunctional. Outwardly you are dead within a few minutes, but the small part of the mind that remains intact, coherent, it registers the pain, the struggle to breath, the terror of what comes next.”
“Sounds wonderful.“ He commented, sarcasm dripping from his lips. Severus stood to peer over her shoulder. “What are you doing?”
“I had bad feelings from her, she enjoys the kill, that is not natural for her species. He controls her only because she allows it.” Paula continued to crumble, rub, flake and snap various herbs into a tin that looked curiously like an old tobacco tin that muggles would use. “These are Drarnego, special healing herbs which when taken regularly, will build up a resistance to her venom. I feel she is destined for you Severus.”
“You what?” His voice was several octaves higher than normal.
“If you should cross paths and she bites you, you must release mulésko dud, do not hesitate, no matter where you are. Or who is with you.” Paula added as an afterthought.
“Angelicae, Scutellariae, Hedyotis, Hedyotis, Venenum Bufonis, Agrimoniae.” She mixed the dried ingredients as she spoke. “You know all of these Severus, combined they will abate pain and act as an anti venom. The Bufonis will prevent the heart from stopping completely, the Agrimoniae will prevent infection and clot the blood, the Hedyotis …”
“Stop. I know what they are, but not the combination. How do you know it will work?”
“Like I told you, I have travelled. Take a level teaspoon of this each day, no more, no less. It will have no adverse effects on you, but will keep you alive for a while longer if ever … Nagini.” She finished in a whisper.
Severus informed the Headmaster of the nights events and Paula’s statement that Nagini was a horcrux’s before he retired to his rooms. He did not mention Paula’s thoughts of the possibility of Nagini biting him. He’d drunk several glasses of Paula’s extremely potent whiskey and was left very light headed. Still, it did not prevent him from taking a teaspoon of the dried herbs from the tin she gave him.
“Ugh” That was disgusting.” He mumbled, gipping then following it with a shot of his own firewhiskey to take away the taste.
“I thought I might accompany you on your training session this morning.”
“Severus Snape up at the crack of dawn without being forced. What is the world coming to?” Paula chuckled.
“Mind your mouth witch, or you might find it occupied in another capacity.”
Paula wasn’t given chance to retort as the students chose that moment to appear.
“Morning Professor.” They said as one, approaching Paula while giving Professor Snape a wide berth.
“I hope you all slept well, their will be two of us after your blood this morning so keep your wits about you.”
The students looked at her aghast before turning their horror-struck faces on Severus.
He in turn gave them his best sneer, oozing with the promise of excruciating pain.
Eleven very demure students clambered into the back of the hearse that morning, their usual enthusiasm gone, instead replaced with fear and trepidation.
Severus continued to smirk as he listened through the glass partition to the hushed whispers of those behind him.
“Severus you’re really enjoying their fear aren’t you?”
“Of course, it is not everyday I have the chance to actually hex the little buggers that serve to make my days so miserable.”
“There is a saying amongst the Romany Severus that perhaps you would be wise to heed.”
“If foky kek jins bute,
Mà sal at lende;
For sore mush jins chomany
That tute kek jins.”
“And that means what exactly?”
“Whatever ignorance men may show,
From none disdainful turn;
For every one doth something know
Which you have yet to learn.”
Severus frowned and stole a look at her from the corner of his eye. He was still going to hex the little sods.
He scowled deeply as he limped back to the hearse at the end of the training session. He’d taken several nasty hexes that morning and even had one of his own darker spells deployed back in his direction. To make a bad situation worse, he’d been forced to stand in line to be healed along with the students as Paula healed them in order of ‘worst first’ as she called it.
He’d not bothered to bring any healing potions of his own on the exercise seeing as he had not planned on being injured himself. Nor did he have the benefit of the Algiz rune like the students so he had only his wits and experience to protect him. Clearly it was not enough.
“What the hell have you been teaching them?” He hissed as they made their way back to the hearse.
“The dark arts, you know that.”
“You did not say just how deeply they were embroiled into the subject. Had I realised, I would not have held back as I did. I was not expecting them to be able to return my own blasted crucio.”
Paula stayed quiet, not wishing to further harm his already bruised ego. “You will eat with me?”
“What are we having?”
“Canafi, pedlios, purrum and rooko-mengro.”
“That better not be bloody hedgehog.”
“No.” She chuckled. “Turnip, nuts, leeks, all good.”
He accepted sullenly. “Very well.”
After finishing the last of his wine, Severus pushed the empty plate away and patted his belly contentedly, he was full and had really enjoyed the meal. “What did you say that was again? I know about the nuts and vegetables, and it definitely was not hedgehog?”
“Definitely not. Did you enjoy it?”
“Yes I did, why?”
“Rooko-mengro.” Paula said, casually making her way to the door of the wagon as Severus sat up straight, eyeing her suspiciously.
“Rooko what? What did you feed me you evil woman?” His voice a low, dangerous growl.
“Rooko-mengro.”
Paula opened the door as Severus stood, his hands braced on the table.
“Squirrel.” She squealed delightedly, running out the door and slamming it shut behind her.
Severus almost broke the table when he knocked it over in his haste to catch her before she got away.
Complaining constantly to himself, he made his way back to the castle, but only after spending twenty fruitless minutes searching for the infuriating witch.
Paula laughed softly from her spot on top of the wagon. Severus looked everywhere but up to where she’d been hiding.
