Falling into Destiny
Chapter Forty-seven
It had taken four more days for you and Draco to get to London. Four days of walking, transfiguring newspapers into muggle money, resting in lackluster hotel rooms, and eating what prepared food you and he could find in stores. And though you wouldn’t admit it to Draco, in fear of his ego inflating, probably the best sleep you had gotten in a long time.
The journey back to Malfoy manor was rather quick after getting to London. With access to Diagon Alley, specifically Gringotts, it had been easy to hire magical transportation.
You got deja’vu as you looked up at the black gates of Draco’s ancestral home. They were both magnificent and terrifying. Somehow Draco realized you were hesitating. He stayed back with you for a couple of seconds before rolling his eyes and pushing ahead. The gates gave way to him, recognizing him. You followed along at a more subdued pace than he probably wanted but you got to the front of the actual house soon enough regardless.
Once you and Draco had shown back up at the house, there had been a relatively big fuss made about his and your arrival. Though reserved in nature, you could tell that both parents were happy and relieved to see their child again. Your aunt Narcissa even walked past her husband's position to wrap her arms around her son. You had heard low murmurs of voices as Narcissa held Draco in her arms but you couldn't hear what they were saying. You'd taken a couple steps away from them out of respect for the reunion upon arrival. Before too long you too had ended up in her embrace. Which had seemed odd; warm and comforting strangely enough, but odd that you received a hug as well considering that you thought your aunt disliked your physical presence.
“What happened?” Lucius asked as he looked between you and his son.
Narcissa let you go before stepping back. She stood shoulder to shoulder, figuratively, with Lucius. Their thoughts switched back and forth too quickly for you to pick through a coherent line. Mostly you just felt the worry and relief ruminating through both of their minds.
“You were gone for a month and neither of you have an explanation ready?” Lucius asked with a biting tone.
“A month?” You asked, perplexed.
“Yes. Care to explain?”
“But we were only gone a couple of days…” you murmured in confusion as you looked at an equally confused Draco.
“What was that?”
Draco spoke up this time as he looked at the taller man, “As far as I know, we’d only been gone a couple of days. Most of that time was spent trying to get back home.”
“What are you saying Draco?” Narcissa asked in a more mild tone compared to her husband. “You didn’t know you’d been missing for the last month?”
Draco nodded alongside you. Until Lucius had brought it up, you had no idea that a month had passed for them. Neither you or Draco had any reason to find out the date while trying to get back to the manor. So you had no way of knowing when you and he had slipped through a couple of extra weeks without knowing it. Though you had a strong feeling that it had something to do with your watery travels.
“I think his disappearance may be my fault,” you said in a slower tone.
The whole thing was confusing. It seemed like no matter how you tried to fit all the puzzle pieces together, something was missing or not quite right. How could you have been gone a month and not realize it? And why did that situation feel so familiar?
“Care to elaborate?” Lucius asked as he kept his gaze on you.
You frowned as you spoke, “I...don’t understand what happened yet. What I do know is that I did something and while we only remember being gone six days, you say that it’s been missing a month.”
“What did you do?” Narcissa asked.
Compared to you, her words sounded rushed. She also sounded worried and a little accusatory. You watched as your aunt turned her gaze towards Draco with worry which caused you to flinch internally. Her worry only reminded you of all the ways you’d broken your internal promise to stay away from Draco this last week...or month, whichever. You had sworn to yourself to stay away from him so he’d be safe and productive in school. And yet at the first test you’d broken that. You’d used him on the beach to power yourself. Then you’d slept in the same bed. You had let your imagination run wild over the possible family you may or may not have had to justify keeping him close by. You had no way of knowing if the danger you envisioned was real or not. So you didn’t know if your justification was warrented or not. And then after all of that you’d stayed near on the journey home. Necessity of traveling together aside there were times when you could have put more distance between you and he. Like getting two hotel rooms instead of one each night.
You pushed back your guilt as your aunt’s unspoken accusation rang through your head. She didn’t want to know about what you could have done better. She wanted to know what happened to her son.
“At the wedding party, I thought I had heard my father calling to me. I wanted to see him badly enough that I created a bridge in the water,” you reiterated the events as you looked at the ground, trying to make sense of everything in a concise way. “Draco followed me out into the ocean. We got to an island but we left as soon as possible. It took five days to walk to Diagon Alley and get back here as I didn’t want to trip Draco’s trace.”
“An island?” Lucius asked in a sharp, interested voice.
The question felt dangerous somehow. You weren’t sure if you were ready to talk about what island you’d been on. It held such contradictions that you felt like anything you said might not be true. Plus there was a knot in your gut over protecting the secret. Avalon had remained hidden for such a long time. There must have been a reason for that. Who were you to endanger the Island’s mysteries?
Sensing your hesitation, Narcissa offered a second option, “The two of you must be exhausted after the excursion. We can continue this discussion later.”
You could tell by the way her eyes lingered on Draco that she was still concerned about her son. There was a moment of tenderness as she looked at you too before you got the white static as she fortified her mind once more. As she did so her expression started to harden. As though seeing you meet her gaze reminded her of all of your deficiencies.
“That sounds nice. But can I borrow some writing supplies?” You asked before budging. “I need to contact Ms. Zabini. I didn’t know I’d disappear for a month and—“
”If you’d like to use your old room to rest, I can write to Ms. Zabini and explain the situation. I can’t imagine she’ll have any objections to your visit.”
Draco cut his mother off, “She's not visiting, she’s finally agreed to come home.”
“Has she?” Lucius questioned with a calculating look in his eye.
“Yes,” Draco affirmed as he wrapped his hand in yours, a surprising move given the situation. “She’ll be staying with us from now on like how she should have been all along.”
You shied back once more at the slightly surprised expression on Narcissa’s face. You felt as Draco stepped in closer towards your side. Even though that meant he really moved as though shielding you from his mother given that you’d stepped back earlier. Lucius seemed somehow pleased at the events but your aunt was harder to read beyond her surprise. It was easy to see that much like his father, Draco was pleased by the situation. Though unlike his father it wasn’t veiled or subdued. He was practically gloating at finally getting his way. Arrogant little—
“Well then Draco, why don’t you escort Dorian to her old room?”
Draco looked like he was going to say something but thought better of it. With a rather quickly murmured closing pleasantry, the young teenager started to lead you into the house. There was no point in resisting. You really could use the rest. Plus the thought of being able to have a proper soak in a bathtub sounded like heaven.
“If it’s been a month already, that means you’re officially thirteen,” you brought up as you and Draco ascended the stairs
“So?”
“Well you missed your birthday,” was your simple answer. “And I never got to give you your present.”
As you and he got to the landing, Draco asked. “What is it?”
“If I told you that, it wouldn’t be a surprise. I think you’ll like it -Blaise helped me pick it out, you replied with a smile as you stopped walking at the bedroom door.
“Fine,” Draco said with a frown, clearing his throat with a barely disguised scuff. “The bathroom should already have everything already. While you’re in the bath I’ll have Adam put fresh linens on your bed.”
It was almost like he’d read your mind on wanting to soak in the bath. He’d used such a grumpy tone though. Still something else caught your attention as he quickly changed the subject.
“Who’s Adam?”
“Our new servant,” Draco said in a tone that suggested it should have been obvious.
“...what happened to Dobby?” You asked in confusion.
“Father set him free.”
“Why? What did he do?”
The idea that Lucius had set the house elf free seemed unbelievable. Dobby had been with the family before even you. As far as you’d been aware he’d been as much as part of the house as the walls. The elf had probably learned his fair share of family secrets in his years of service. Which was why the idea of setting him free seemed so strange. You doubted that Lucius wanted any secrets to be brought to light without being able to control the narrative.
Draco seemed a little grumpy as he responded with, “How should I know?”
“I was just asking a question.”
“A stupid question.”
“For the love of Merlin, what crawled up your ass and died this time?” You snapped at him before clenching your jaw. “You know what, never mind. I don’t even want to know. ”
Before he had time to open his mouth you were already in your old room and had locked the door. As you heard the younger teenager storm away, you let out a deep breath andyou looked around. The room was eerily quiet. Everything was pretty much how you left it the last time you’d been at the Malfoys’ manor. It was strange to think that it’d been two years already. Before that one night it had been even more years. Though with how Draco’s mood swung, who could blame you? Dealing with his moods triggering your own was not something you missed.
As you looked around, nostalgia settled in at a rapid rate. Even if it had been a long time everything in the room was so familiar as it had been kept just how you left it. So stepping back into the room was like stepping back into your childhood. Everything about the room felt nostalgic; the scents, sounds, and sights all triggered multiple memories as you walked around. Unfortunately not all of the memories were good.
You sat on the embellished bench at the end of your bed. The fabric was cold to the touch and felt a little dirty. Somehow even though the room had seemed to have been sealed up for the last two years a fine layer of dust had settled in. It had been unseen to the eye. The thing that baffled you was that your previous room had been left unmolested to the point that such dust had settled. You knew that you had one of the best rooms in the manor. They must have had a guest worthy of the better accommodations over the years. By the look of things though, that hadn’t happened. How odd...
