Chapter 48 The meetings start in earnest
Severus confessed to Nina’s parents what he had done. The anguish he caused her, what he drove her to do. He also ended up telling them about the life she had been forced to lead following their untimely demise.
“Don’t you see? I knew all of this.” He told them. “I should never have rejected her that way. Not knowing what I did. She trusted me. Now I am thoroughly ashamed of myself.”
Severus never confessed his feelings in such depth to anyone before now, Theodore and Gwen knew this. They knew how deeply Severus truly felt for their little girl. But what he had done to her was wrong. They had known what was happening with their daughter but were unable to say anything to her. They could only speak if someone spoke to them first. And Nina had not spoken to them for over a week now. She locked herself up in her own little world, and now to discover what happened to her after they were murdered. It was tearing them apart.
“It is going to take time to regain her trust Severus. A great deal of time. Did you not consider that she had been hurt enough before she even came here?” Gwen glowered at him. “How dare you treat her so?”
“You are not worthy of her boy.” Theodore told him. “I had hoped that you were someone that she could lean on in times of trouble. You should be helping her, not abusing her in such a way. Believe me when I tell you that if I were alive I would beat you to within an inch of your life.”
“And I would accept your punishment, sir. Truly I would.”
“Soon it will be time for her to face the biggest evil known to mankind. She cannot do that without your support.” Gwen told him. “How are you both to unite with one another if you cannot give her the love and light that she needs. Yes she has made mistakes, as have you. But you have had many years to make your mistakes and right them Severus. Nina has had merely months. She knows nothing of this world. How long is it since you took her to meet any of the magical beings necessary for her and your survival when you both finally confront this evil?”
“Other than the goblins, it has been a while. I believe the last was the Furiae.”
“Then you had best move boy.” Theodore raged. “Time is short. And you will treat my daughter well from now on. As is her right.”
“I shall. Sir. Madam. I beg your forgiveness. I shall not lapse again.
“It is not our forgiveness you should be asking for. It is Nina’s. And soon. Now go.”
Severus bowed and left the room, never had he had such a dressing down and not retaliated before. But he knew they were right. He had been totally selfish as far as Nina was concerned. And though he did love her more than life itself he had not shown her, not properly. That would have to change.
It was a very Subdued Potions Master who entered his study and stood looking down at Nina as she slept. She must have sensed something because her eyes fluttered opened and met his. Nina started. The shock of meeting a pair of eyes studying her as she woke was a shock and she sat up quickly.
“Severus. Did I fall asleep? I didn’t mean to. Err…”
“Shh. Do not worry. It is good that you slept.” Severus knelt on the floor beside her. “It has given me a chance to take a good look at myself. I spoke with your parents Nina. Confessed to them how badly I treated you. They are not pleased with me as you can imagine. And they are right not to be so. Nina I am so, so sorry for treating you as I have. For making you promises and not keeping them. But I do love you Nina. I would lay down my life for you and that is the truth. Please? Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?” He took hold of her hands and bowed his head low to her.
“Severus don’t do this. It’s not you. I don’t like it. We’ve both done things wrong sometimes. I liked it as we were. I felt safe and I never doubted that you loved me till recently. If you think you need forgiveness Severus. Then you need it from yourself, not me. I never stopped loving you and I never will. Not ever.”
She was lost when he broke down and sobbed in her arms like a child. Nina loved him with all of her heart and hated to see him broken like this.
But she held on to him, let him vent his tears and emotions as he had done for her so many times.
Both stayed in his rooms that night. They talked in depth about their relationship, cuddling and sometimes kissing. Nina wanted to go further but Severus held her off, telling her that he wanted tonight to be just about them and how they felt, not about how deep she could blow him or how hard he could fuck her.
No, tonight was about love, caring and tenderness, about building trust.
He was amazed to find that she still trusted him as much as ever; still loved him as much as ever. Never had those feelings wavered within her.
She was disappointed that her parents now knew of her past with the Whites. She had hoped to spare them that. But it was done and they knew. There was nothing she could do about it.
Monday morning Nina had to go to the Headmasters office, look over some legal documents from the solicitor that Lani Tanaya appointed for her and sign several sheets of parchment. Severus told her that her solicitor, Mr Broomwell was highly respected in his profession and much sought. Mr. Broomwell made sure that Nina kept her anonymity by using his own accountant to make sure that all of her records were kept up to date.
He treat Nina with a great deal of respect. To be asked by Lani Tanaya personally to deal with Nina, as she insisted on being called, was a great accolade indeed.
Through April and May, Severus kept his promise to Nina’s parents, treating her with kindness and affection, even going so far as to openly kiss her on the cheek in public. Well, as public as the Great Hall can be when it is full of students.
Draco stopped sulking about the snitch and started speaking to her again. He apologised for being an ass and soon she was back on friendly terms again with most of the students.
Blaize Zabini was finally keeping his distance from her. The promise of a slow torturous death from the Potions Master was not something to be ignored.
Severus, with the help of Firenze and Hagrid, arranged for her to meet with the centaurs. Nina thought they were great and chatted for hours with them. Not once did any of the centaurs mention Mars in her presence. She also thought Bane was rather handsome with his dark looks and arrogant manner.
The Thestral’s and Hippogriffs were interesting but Nina didn’t like the pixies much. Severus and Albus were with her for that and although they didn’t hurt Nina, they bit, nipped and scratched viciously at the two men. That visit was kept as short as possible.
Many of the smaller less hostile creatures Hagrid would usually bring to his hut and introduce her. She felt stupid speaking to bowtruckles and Flobberworm and doxy’s. She did her best to be polite to them as Hagrid assured her that they could understand what she was saying. Nina doubted that very much.
When Severus told her that they would be going into the lake to meet with the merfolk next weekend she was not happy. She stormed about her living room ranting and raving about the squid and how it would grab her at the first opportunity and most likely drown her, if she didn’t drown herself first that is.
“I’m not going in there. That ruddy great squid is in there. And it’s cold and I can’t swim. Dad, you tell him. I can‘t go in there.”
“You must Nina. You will come to no harm. Severus will make sure of that. And you have much worse then some squid to worry about.”
“What can be worse then a giant pink slimy yucky thing like that?”
“Plenty my darling.” Her mum told her. “You have still to meet with the trolls and giants. Then there are the vampires. Real ones this time.”
Gwen gave a pointed look at the Potions Master when mentioning vampires.
Severus could literally feel his cheeks reddening as Nina giggled. Both still remembered their first meeting and Nina’s absolute certainty that he was a vampire. She still called him one sometimes when he became a little too fervent with his nibbling of her body.
“Trolls, giants and vampires?” She asked the incredulously.
She wasn’t too bothered about the giants. After all Hagrid was a half giant and he was okay. She was unsure about the trolls but was not at all keen on meeting vampires.
“Will that be it after that?”
“No.” Her father told her. “There will be one more after the vampires. But it will be the most unpleasant of them all.”
“What could be more unpleasant the vampires?” Severus asked him.
“She has already met with the werewolves.”
“What creature would you most hate to meet with Severus, even with your Patronus?”
Severus paled as he stared disbelievingly at Theodore. “No.”
He told them. His voice barely more then a whisper. “She cannot.”
“She must Severus. I am afraid that no is not an option in this case.”
“What?” Nina wanted to know. “What can’t I meet Severus? Tell me.”
Severus shook his head. “You tell her. I cannot.”
“Dementors my dear.”
“What do you mean Dementors?” Severus demanded. “Why not dementor? Singular.”
“That is between Nina and the dementors I am afraid Severus. No ordinary witch or wizard may accompany her when she meets with them. You know as well as I what the outcome would be.”
“What’s a dementor and why have I got to meet them on my own? What do they do?”
Nina saw the look of misery on Severus’ face and turned to her parents portrait. “Mum? Dad?”
It was her Mum who spoke up. “A dementor my darling is the worst abomination that exists in this world. It is a creature that draws from you every bit of happiness that you have, leaving you with nothing but misery, sadness, despair. Nought but the worst moments of your life remain with you. When it has done all of that, it will kiss the victim, drawing out and swallowing out their soul, leaving nothing but a mindless shell of the person that once was. That sweetheart is a dementor.”
After making nothing more then a series of inarticulate noises, Nina sat down where she was, on the floor. She caught her breath and looked up at her mum.
“You want me to meet those things?” She asked shrilly.
“Most certainly not. But it matters not what any of us want Nina. It is what you must do. I do not know what will happen when you meet with them. But I do know that no harm shall come to you. But they are terrifying to look at and you cannot allow anyone to accompany you. Any that attempt to do so will invariably suffer the fate I have already told you of. That includes you Severus. Understand that you must not try and interfere.”
The portrait stilled, meaning the discussion was over. Severus joined Nina on the floor and embraced her. “Are you alright?”
“Oh yeah. I’m well chuffed. What about you?” She asked sarcastically.
“No happier then you are actually. I have no desire for you to meet with these creatures any more then you wish to yourself. But it would appear that as usual, neither of us has any say in the matter.”
That evening was spent in quiet contemplation. Neither of them willing to discuss the dementors and both of them unable to think of anything else.
Both spent a restless night in Severus’ bed, neither getting much sleep.
It was Friday and Severus was grumpy all through class. Nina attended DADA class that morning and didn’t hear a single word that was said.
If Seamus hadn’t given her a gentle poke in the ribs she would have sat in the classroom until the afternoon session started.
“What on earth is the matter with ya girl? Been in a world of your own all day so ye have.”
“Oh Seamus. Is it lunch time all ready?”
“It is. Come on or there’ll be nothing left.”
Seamus gave her a look as if he thought maybe she was a bit barmy and left. Nina stood, picked up her bag and followed him. ‘This is damn daft.’ She thought to herself. ‘If I’ve got to meet them there’s nothing I can do about it. Mum said they can’t hurt me. They just look horrible that’s all. I’ll ask Severus if he has a picture in one of his books. Then maybe it wont be such a shock when I do meet them.’
When Nina sat in her place at lunchtime Severus was already there.
“Yes I have and I shall show it to you this evening.”
“What?”
The book you wished to see. I heard your earlier thoughts. Though looking at drawings, even magical ones, will not fully prepare you for the real thing I am afraid.”
“Probably not but it might help a bit.”
“I have also prepared a pensive for you. So that you may see for yourself exactly the effect that a dementor has on its victim.”
“Cool, thanks. I’ll look at it this afternoon.”
“No you shall not. It is very unpleasant and at the moment it is securely hidden. You may view it this evening after dinner in my presence. I shall enter the pensive with you.”
“Fair enough. But it seems ages away.”
“Be grateful for that. Incidentally, you shall be meeting with the merfolk in the morning. Mr. Potter will be accompanying you. Albus’ idea. Potter has had previous dealings with the creatures and Albus feels that you would be better served going with him. I, for once am inclined to agree.”
“You are. Why?”
“Because I hate that bloody squid even more then you do.”
‘Oh just great.’ She thought as she took in his smirking face. ‘He gets out off freezing his balls off and sends me and Harry to get drowned by the bloody giant squid instead.’
“Anyway I can’t go. I already told you I can’t swim.”
“It will not be a problem. I have a good supply of Gillyweed in stock.”
“Whatyweed?”
“Gillyweed,” He laughed. “After eating some you shall not have any difficulty in swimming. Ask Mr. Potter. He has used it before.”
Nina sought Harry out straight after lunch. “Harry wait.” She called up the staircase as he headed to the common room with Ron and Hermione.
“What is it Nina? I need to get my books for this afternoon’s classes.”
“I…I know. I’ll only keep you a minute. Please Harry.”
Harry told the others to go ahead and he’d catch them up.
Nina still didn’t understand why they were being so distant from her but she said nothing of it.
“It’s about tomorrow. What does erm Gillyweed do? I can’t swim, Harry and I don’t like that squid. I’m scared.”
“Don’t be a wuss, Nina. You’ll be fine. I was first time I used it. Once you’ve eaten some you get gills and flippers. Swimming is easy then. Look I have to go. I’ll meet you by the lake at ten.” With that he ran up the stairs.
‘Wuss. I’m not a wuss.’ Nina thought to herself and headed outside.
“I am not a wuss.” She muttered. “I’m not. I’m shit scared but I’m not a wuss Harry Potter, So there.” She continued muttering to herself as she walked, not really heading in any particular direction. She just wanted to clear her head. When she reached the edge of the forest, a wave of her hand provided her with a thick blanket to sit on and a heating spell to keep the chill off.
How wondering about Gillyweed and merfolk led to thoughts of Theodore House she had no idea, but it did and she realised that she had never even visited the place. But Nina couldn’t just show up and expect to be shown round.
Remus, for one, would want to know why. He visited the school as soon as the MOM cleared him after the full moon following his last change. He needed to prove that he would not become a werewolf during a real full moon. Then Remus came directly to Nina to say thank you again. She was just glad to see him.
But after that any visits he made were with Albus to discuss the details of Theodore House or the inhabitants. If he saw Nina in passing, he gave her a quick hello and that was it. She guessed that he was just getting on with his life and didn’t blame him for it at all and was glad for him.
Nina wasn’t looking for eternal gratitude or anything silly like that. But something wasn’t quite right. She just didn’t know what. Somewhat surprised how long she had been sitting out there when the end of class bell sounded, Nina headed inside. As soon as she cleared the main doors she saw Harry again with Ron and Hermione.
“Hiya you three. Classes alright?”
“Same as ever.” Ron answered.
“Hey I’ve got a picture of my mum and dad now. Do you want to come and see it?”
“Not right now Nina. We have a lot of homework. Maybe another time.”
Nina looked at Hermione. She seemed eager to be away. “Okay then. Maybe another time.”
She watched as they ran up the staircase chatting and laughing. Nina wondered how she had gone from having no one, to suddenly having friends and then to having almost no friends. Maybe Blaize was right. She was a freak, and people didn’t like freaks. Perhaps she would get a chance to talk to Harry tomorrow.
Severus was in his study when Nina walked in. He walked over to a bookshelf , removed a large book from one of the upper shelves and began turning the pages until he found what he was looking for in the pages.
“Dementors. The most foulest of creatures known to wizard kind.” He told her, laying the open book on the coffee table.
They sat on the sofa as Nina watched a drawing of what looked at first like a long dark tatty floating cloak. Then long gnarled fingers appeared from the sleeves and the hood slid back to reveal a hideous face, sightless eyes and a lipless cavernous mouth.
“Urgh. It’s horrible.”
“That is only a drawing. What you shall see in the pensive this evening is much worse.”
“Well thank you for that Severus. It was just what I needed to hear.”
“We shall see if you are so flippant after you have viewed the pensive.”
“I’m not trying to be flippant. But mum said that they can’t hurt me and I believe her. Besides, I’m more worried about tomorrow. Why can’t the merfolk come to us?”
“That is now how they work. They are a very secluded race. Not the most sociable or friendliest of creatures.”
“Oh this gets better and better. I still wish you were coming with me.”
“I shall be waiting for you along with Albus. We shall take you to the centre of the lake by boat. Then you and Mr. Potter can chew on the Gillyweed and in you go. Did you talk with Mr. Potter?”
“Yeah. He said we’d be fine.”
“There you are then. Nothing to worry about.”
Nina didn’t tell him about Harry calling her a wuss. He was probably right anyway.”
Severus had marking and a detention to deal with so Nina went to play with Scotta until it was time for dinner. Scotta had grown considerably since Christmas. She was forever running about the castle, jumping out at students and yowling loudly at them, making them jump and then running off to find someone else to scare. Then she would come back and send the images to Nina.
“You really are naughty Scotta. You’ll have to stop scaring people.”
Scotta would then send an image of fresh salmon to her mistress and lick her lips. She wasn’t a bad cat, just mischievous. But if Mrs Norris was about, Scotta was on her best behaviour. Her mother would not stand for such nonsense and would bat Scotta hard if she found her misbehaving.
As soon as dinner was over Nina was escorted back to her rooms by Albus. The Potions Master arriving a few minutes later with the pensive.
Severus spoke directly to her.
“I shall accompany you into the pensive. Albus shall be on hand to pull you away if he considered you to be in any distress. As I have previously stated, what you shall witness is not pleasant. To watch as a person’s soul is torn from them is not pleasant.”
He took hold of her hand and lowered their joined fingers into the pensive.
Nina looked round. They were in a cell of some kind.
“What is this place?” She asked him. Her voice merely a whisper.
“This is Azkaban prison. You do not need to lower your voice. None but I can hear you here.”
“Azkaban.” She shuddered involuntarily.
Severus felt it and gripped her hand a little more firmly. Both of them felt a coldness creep up on them. Nina turned, wondering where it was coming from. When her eyes fell on the dark distant shadow approaching from far down the dingy corridor, she almost screamed. Her hand flew to her mouth to stop herself as the shadowy form quickly drew nearer and nearer.
“Severus. What’s that?”
“That, is a dementor. Even as a memory you can feel its presence; the despair it brings.”
“I don’t like it Severus. Are you sure it can’t see us? It’s coming straight at us.”
“Not for us. It is coming for the poor unfortunate in the cell opposite. Watch.”
She pressed herself against him as the tall robed creature drew level with them. Nina could hear the dementors breath rattling from within the tattered robes. A hand appeared from the robe. It looked as if its flesh had simply rotted and fallen from it’s bones. Long skeletal fingers curled around the cell door and a piercing scream from inside made her hair stand on end. Her teeth chattered as Severus led her into the cell.
The dementor was hovering over what she thought was a man, cowering in one corner, pushing himself as far as possible into the wall. He was squatting in a pile of shit and straw, his arms thrown across his face protectively as the dementor hovered closer and grasped hold of his wrists, pulling them apart.
Nina was like a rabbit in headlights as she looked into those terrified eyes. “Severus. D…do something.”
“Nina I can do nothing. It has already happened. Besides. This man was a Death Eater and has quite willingly murdered and raped many men, women and children. Muggle and wizard. He got only what he deserved.”
The dementors hood slipped back from its head as it lowered its grotesque face in front of the now prone man. The screaming had stopped, the man now too petrified to make a sound as the Dementors open lipless mouth attached itself to his. The creature drew in its rattling breath deeply, loudly as the man on the floor of the cell ceased his struggle and lay limply as the dementor rose and left the cell.
She nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of Severus’ voice telling her it was time to leave the room.
As soon as they were in the corridor her vision seemed to flicker as the scene in front of her changed. They were still at Azkaban. At least she thought they were. There were several doors along this corridor. Cries and wails coming through the small metal grills set into each one. Then she saw several dementors making their way along the outside of the cells, pausing for several minutes at each one as the cries of despair worsened inside the cell.
There was a tug and she felt quite disoriented for a while until she realised she was sitting in front of Albus again.
Severus brought her back. He could feel the horror welling up inside her and decided not to let her see any more. Albus would have picked up on it soon anyway and pulled her out.
She was shaking uncontrollably. She drew in a ragged breath and let it out, then opened her mouth to speak and closed it again several times before keeping it closed. Nina didn’t know what to say. What she did know was that she didn’t want to meet those things for real. ‘Bugger the merfolk and the vampires. They’d be a piece of piss compared to those things.’
“Eee.” She managed to squeak.
Albus passed her a glass of water and she gulped it down.
“Well that was nice. Not. I‘m not gonna meet with those things I don‘t care what any of you say.”
“I am afraid you must.” Albus told her.
“Why? What good is it gonna do? Dad?”
”That is something I cannot tell you. All I know is that you must. And that they are the last of the creatures you are to meet.”
“Can’t tell me or won’t?”
“Nina I do not know why. If I did I would tell you. You know that.”
“I know dad.” She sighed. But I still don’t like it and I’m not gonna sleep tonight.”
“I shall give you some dreamless sleep potion.” Severus put in. You need rest if you are to meet the merfolk in the morning.”
“Oh it just gets better and better.” Nina said sarcastically as Severus left to retrieve the potion from his stores.
Albus took her hand. “I am sorry it has to be this way Nina. Unfortunately none of us have a say in any of this. You know that already.”
“Yeah I do. Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.”
“No. It does not. How about we have tea and cake, then we can discuss something else to take your mind from dementors and merfolk.”
When Severus returned carrying a small blue phial Nina held her hand out for it. “I hope that stuff doesn’t taste bad.”
“It is quite tasteless. However I shall not be giving it to you until you are in bed. It works extremely fast.” He told her as he slipped the phial into his pocket. Besides, he hoped to use his own methods to help take her mind off things tonight, before she took the potion.
Some how the chatter seemed to centre around trolls, giants and vampires. Just what Nina needed to put her mind at ease.
“I think I’m gonna need a double dose of your dreamless potion tonight Severus!” Nina smirked wryly. “I don’t think I’m too worried about the giants though. Hagrid’s okay so the rest should be too. Are trolls like giants?”
Albus patted her knee. “I think Nina that we should only go into details closer to the time you are to meet with them. You have enough to think about at the moment. Meanwhile, I have a great deal of correspondence to bring up to date so will bid you all goodnight.”
Albus left and Severus stood.
“Mr. and Mrs. Manohel, goodnight.“
“Goodnight Severus.”
He left Nina to say goodnight to her parents, giving her a peck on the cheek before leaving through the connecting door. He would not sleep in Nina’s rooms any more. Much as he liked her parents, he did not feel comfortable about sleeping with their daughter with only a door between them. When Nina came through fifteen minutes later Severus was already in bed.
“You took your time.”
“I know. But Scotta was feeling neglected.”
“Well now I too am feeling neglected. I do hope you are going to make it up to me.”
“Aw. Poor ikle Sevewus.”
His eyes flashed as he growled at her. “You’ll pay for that.” He told her. His voice low and his eyes narrowed.
“Ooo I hope so.” Nina giggled scrambling into the bed and trying to tickle him. He rolled on top of her and began to tickle her back but he was in for a surprise.
Her eyes flashed and Severus found himself thrown back on the bed, his hands and feet magically pinned to the mattress.
“You might be bigger and stronger then me Sevewus but I’m gonna tickle you if it’s the last thing I do.” She crawled on top of him with a wicked grin.
His eyes widened as he struggled to break his bonds. “Let me go. I am not in the least bit ticklish. I never have been.”
“You sound desperate Sevewus. I think your fibbing.” Her fingers stated under his arms and he roared at her. “Stop it. No.”
Nina worked on the side of his ribs as he struggled harder, his face reddening as he tried no to laugh. She dug her fingers in a bit lower and he guffawed loudly as her hands moved over his body, finding his most ticklish places sending him into a frenzy of laughter.
Tears streamed down his face and onto the pillow when she got to the soles of his feet and his laughter turned into a high pitched giggle.
When she thought he’d had enough she stopped.
“That was revenge for all the times you’ve tickled me so don’t you dare tickle me back.” Nina said as she released him.
Severus allowed himself to calm down and rushed to the bathroom to pee.
When he returned Nina was sitting in bed trying to look innocent.
“That look will not work with me young lady. I want my pound of flesh and I intend to take it.”
Nina didn’t try to get away. Not when her eyes saw the erection he returned with from the loo.
