LEECH
Chapter 48
Severus felt like shit. He smelled like a distillery, his mouth felt as if someone had wiped it dry with lint, he’d drooled all down the front of his robes, his eyes did not want to stay open, and his head felt as though Nifflers were trying their damnedest to burrow their way through his skull.
After two attempts he got to his feet and staggered forward, putting his foot on the discarded bottle and falling flat on his arse with a thud. This served to jolt his whole body and make his head pound even harder and more painfully.
“Gods, why do you hate me so much?” He wailed, deciding it might be safer to crawl to his bathroom. But it hurt his knees and he was forced to use the sofa to pull himself upright again, then use whatever was available to support him as he wended his way to the bathroom.
He emptied his bladder, flushed the toilet, then fell to his knees while he threw up. He flushed again the hauled himself back to his feet and peered into the mirror. Severus wished he hadn’t.
He stripped off his clothes, scooped several handfuls of cold water into his mouth, then headed for the shower. It was difficult staying upright on the slippery tiles in this state but he managed to clean himself of the stink that pervaded his pores, wash his hair, then stagger out and dry himself. Once he’d scrubbed his teeth several times he dressed and entered the living room to floo the kitchens for a pot of coffee.
The quiet sound of the tray and the light rattle of the cup and cream jug jarred at his head and he closed his eyes, wishing the world would stop for a while so he could recover.
Kathy was still tired when she awoke. Her eyes were puffy and itchy from crying herself to sleep and her heart ached terribly. Her first thoughts were of the dreadful things Severus had said to her last night.
Not wanting to see him, she hurriedly washed and dressed, then snuck into the office and out into the corridor to eat in the Great Hall.
Luckily it was still early and only a few students were in there. Hagrid, Professor Flitwick, and another Professor who’s name she couldn’t currently remember were at the head table so she felt reasonably safe to approach and take her seat. She didn’t want to be here when Severus arrived, or even Albus or Minerva, they would ask questions and she didn’t feel up to being interrogated right now. There again if she went back to the dungeons, she might meet Severus on the way.
“Mornin’ Kathy.” Hagrid greeted cheerfully.
“Hello Hagrid. Are you well?”
“Allus well me. Listen, I wondered if ye wouldn’t mind doin me a favour so to speak.”
“If I can, what is it?”
“Well I got this sick Unicorn see, She’s dyin’ an Dumbledore reckons you might be able to ’elp heal her. I’m at me wits end, ’haven’t a clue what wrong with her. So I was ‘opin like. What do ye think, will ye try? If yer not busy that is.”
Hagrid, I can’t promise you I can heal it, I’ve not tried that aspect of things yet. A unicorn? A real unicorn?”
“Yep, lovely young thing she is. So will ye give it a go. She’s gonna die anyway of ye don’t, so there nowt to lose if it don’t work.”
“I’ll try Hagrid. I’ve finished, shall we go now?”
Hagrid’s face lit up and Kathy, though she was glad for an excuse to leave the castle, was worried about letting Hagrid down.
The giant led her partway into the forest to a small paddock, where a small lean-to had been hastily erected to shelter the sick beast.
Kathy thought she had never seen anything so beautifully tragic in all her life. Kneeling down beside the fallen animal, her own eyes wet with unshed tears at the sight of the majestic creature that lay helplessly on it’s side. The unicorn struggled to breathe in it’s position, but even Hagrid admitted being unable to keep her on her feet.
The unicorns eyes rolled fearfully back in her head at Kathy’s proximity, weather because she wasn’t pure, or because it sensed something unnatural about her, maybe both, it was unknown. But it’s weakness prevented it from fleeing and Kathy ran gloved hands along the animals head, neck, and side, talking softly, trying to calm it.
The unicorn though was becoming more stressed by Kathy’s proximity and it tried to kick out as it’s breathing became more rapid.
“Think you better move back Miss, she’s getting more stressed and might ’urt ye.” Hagrid warned.
“Kathy ignored him, removed her gloves and closed her eyes. Letting instinct take over, she again stroked the unicorn, light strokes, brief touches, until it was too weak to resist her any longer. Kathy then leaned over, half laying across the barely moving chest and placed a hand either side of it’s neck, embracing it. placed both hands against it’s long neck.
She could feel it’s essence pouring into her, along with something she could not name, some rotten, rancid, like a canker that threatened to eat whatever life force was available.
Something in Kathy’s mind told her to stop now and she drew back sharply, nausea threatening to overtake her at any moment. She stood and stumbled from the shelter and out of the paddock, bending over and retching harshly. But nothing came away and she was feeling weaker and weaker. Out of desperation she grabbed a tree for support, clinging to it and started to feel whatever cancerous scourge now invaded her body, drain from her and into the tree.
Hagrid, torn for a moment between the practically lifeless unicorn, and Kathy who was obviously in some distress, lumbered after her. Just before he was able to take hold of her to prevent her collapse she grabbed the tree and Hagrid watched in shocked amazement as the ancient Elder tree rapidly deteriorated. It’s newly formed leaves shrivelling and falling about her like a shower of dying birds. The Elders branches visibly dried and crumbled before his eyes before the trunk itself turned a pale grey and it too began to crumble.
As the tree died and disintegrated, Kathy felt strengthened and stood straight, her eyes slightly unfocussed. She knew the disease was gone from her, but she still retained the majority of the unicorns life force and her only thought was to return that life to it’s owner. She ran back to the lean-to and fell down to the unicorns side once again, wrapping her arms round it’s neck, willing it to take back what she had stolen.
Hagrid followed, panting and puffing but needing to try and understand what he was witnessing. He’d been momentarily stunned watching what happened with the tree, but her sudden flight back to the paddock had brought him out of his reverie.
Within a few minutes the unicorn was struggling to gain it’s feet. Kathy was thrown to her back as it finally managed to stand. It leapt over her and took off into the forest at such a speed that Hagrid barely had chance to realise what had happened.
He was frightened when he notice that Kathy did not get up. He knew she hadn’t been kicked or trampled. Picking her up, he ran to the castle as fast as he could, bursting through the doors and charging up the staircases to the infirmary. He bellowed for Madam Ponfrey all the way.
